What drives a Formula 1 champion—on and off the track? In this episode, I use Niia's concept album Bobby Deerfield as a lens to analyze the film Bobby Deerfield, starring Al Pacino and set during the dramatic 1976 Formula 1 Championship. Delve into the story of Bobby Deerfield, a Brabham-Alfa Romeo driver, and uncover parallels with real-life Brazilian racer Carlos Pace, whose career was tragically cut short. By blending cinematic themes, Pace's legacy, and psychological theories, this episode offers a unique exploration of the mindset of F1 drivers and the mental resilience required in motorsport. Trigger Warning: Although not a primary focus of this episode, topics such as death, terminal illness, and suicide are mentioned. If you prefer to avoid these subjects, please skip this episode. If needed, consider seeking professional support. Niia - Bobby Deerfield (album)

This week on Tub Talks podcast we're talking with Niia Rocco, a multi-faceted singer-songwriter full of artistry, humor, wisdom and a god-given voice. She became a close friend of Secular Sabbath after recording with us for a livestream during the early days of the pandemic. Since then, we have featured Niia at many Secular Sabbath experiences, soaking our bodies and minds in her angelic voice and ethereal sound bowls. In this whimsical, honest conversation about Niia's lifelong relationship to making music, we cover all bases from what it takes to make music professionally, to a secret love of musicals, navigating romantic and familial relationships, and the creative process of writing her latest album. Niia opens up about the trials and tribulations of harnessing creativity, having been classically trained in jazz by her Italian family, and integrating her musical history with the woman she has become now. As she watches and witnesses herself grow as an artist, Niia reveals how the discovery of ambient music has become a new form of judgment-free self-expression as she expands from her contemporary sound of jazz-meets-pop. A common thread that continues to come back to us throughout our conversation is the impact of our upbringings. We explore how they can either help or hinder our view of ourselves and the way in which these pillars that shaped our lives, and define how we choose to move through our individual creative journeys to grow as artists and people. With music being such a deep part of her consciousness, it is a constant friend and enemy, shaping a unique relationship in all facets of Niia relates to the world - Music is her life, but how does that play out? Listen to how she finds her voice in this intimate dip in the tub under the oak trees. To join Secular Sabbath membership, you can find us at secular-sabbath.com/membership. Joining grants you access to our Inner Circle community of sensory-exploring like-minded people, where you can gather with us locally in LA for monthly meet-up experiences, pop-up events around the globe, and partake in our exclusive ambient online community. Niia is an American singer, pianist, and songwriter. She submerges herself in deep extremes on her 2022 project, Mouthful of Salt. As if born again in the wake of a tsunami's destruction, the Los Angeles-based jazz/R&B artist slips in and out of oceanic calm like waking from a delicate afternoon dream. She carefully assembles thirteen tracks buoyed by cinematic ambience, airy piano, and vocal echoes. This album is a turning point for Niia - she made the record mostly alone with her engineer in her LA apartment, an old church converted into a haunting living space. Since trading New York for Los Angeles in 2015, she has quietly enchanted audiences, tastemakers, and peers with albums—I [2017] and II: La Bella Vita [2020]—and the If I Should Die EP [2021]. Beyond acclaim from American Songwriter, WORDPLAY, NOCTIS, and more, Rolling Stone hailed If I Should Die as “some of Niia's stickiest work,” and Clash declared, “her musical influences span across various countries and cultures to form a sensuous style that's evocatively smooth.” Along the way, she collaborated with the likes of Jazmine Sullivan, Gallant, Boogie, and Girl Ultra, just to name a few. Following her 2021 project If I Should Die, she evolved once again. “It's the closest I'll get to a religious experiment,” she smiles.

Lamont Coleman is a producer, songwriter, artist. Big smile, big hair, big presence, humble yet exuberant. With practically a lifetime creating music, and achieving early notoriety as a producer, he continues to perfect his craft, having worked with majors such as Wyclef Jean, Akon, Lil' Wayne, T.I, Shakira, the Latin group Aventura, Justin Bieber, Eve, and Jim Jones. A revolutionary spirit who resists the restrictions frequently imposed by the music industry, Lamont Coleman relentlessly pursues his passion for creating music that aims to uplift his audience and inspire them. Happily, his music still has great commercial success. “Sweetest Girl/Dollar Bill” by Wyclef Jean ft. Lil' Wayne, Akon and Niia, which he produced, went platinum in 2008 and represents a first highlight of his career that earned him the BMI Pop Music Award in 2009. Lamont particularly loves working with up-and-coming artists, nurturing their craft but is also an artist in his own right. Although his rise to fame has been along the “urban” and “pop” paths, he is steeped in gospel and has a massive love for rock, and consequently his own catalog reflects the breadth of his talent. His solo project, L. Coleman, will mirror his non-snobbish approach to music – eclectic, filled with joy and bigger than life — a description which pretty much sums up Mr. Coleman perfectly.

After Eight Show - Music That You Just Don't Hear Anywhere Else!
We had a plethora of #NewMusic in our playlist this week! An eclectic mix of original, intelligent, melodic, grown-up songs - #electronic, #rnb, #jazz, #blues and #acoustic. And mostly from artists who you have not heard of - yet! Think 'next series of Jools' - that's the kind of artists that we play. Amongst our selections, there was #NewMusic from Niia, Seth Walker, LIUN + The Science Fiction Band, Nova Norda, Chynna Lewis, SAM DOTIA, So Below, Xenia Ghali, Lemin., JFDR, Emancipator, Tired Eyes Kingdom, Appleby, Iris Temple, Nora Toutain, Julia Biel, Azure Ryder, Dubh Lee, Space Traffic and Lost and Profound. Our Luvva Cover was really interesting this week. An extremely well known Motown song was released in 1972 and did nothing. Temptations covered it the year after and it was a massive hit all over the world - possibly their best known song now. But their cover was a dramatically different version to the original. A prodigious musician with an Italian and jazz vocalist background, Niia has spent over 10 years charting the path towards contemporary urban elegance mixed with future jazz. After years of establishing herself amongst the NYC underground scene, she released Generation Blue in 2014 — a slinky, full-bodied collection of smooth pop — followed by her 2017 debut album I which was critically acclaimed by The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Pitchfork, etc. This upcoming project solidifies Niia’s entrancing lush, bassy sound, revealing smooth, fully realized songwriting and timeless aesthetic - Morricone hood meets future jazz and a nod to her Italian heritage. Often described as the chic outsider, she’s worked with La Mer, Calvin Klein, Cole Haan, collaborated with Jazmine Sullivan, Gallant, Boogie, and shared stages with the XX, Jorja Smith, and Charlotte Cardin.

Today, I sat down with Niia (@niiarocco), a singer-songwriter artist who grew up surrounded by classically trained musicians. She just released her second album, La Bella Vita, which is available anywhere that you listen to music. She has a beautiful voice and makes fucking dope music, and you would be depriving yourself of great art by not checking out La Bella Vita. In this podcast episode, Niia discusses a Ted Talk she gave about stagefright, sex robots, learning under Wyclef Jean, the making of La Bella Vita, and more. MD Kiley Hanish is an Occupational therapist who specializes in pregnancy and infant loss. Grief and trauma need to be experienced. And we all must understand that everyone experiences them differently. The MOVIE Return to Zero was created in honor of their son Norbert. HOPE: The Foundation was created Healing Retreat Outreach and education Peer support and community Empowerment What should women expect when they attend one of your retreats? 15-20 women come to feel validated and feel heard, to be supported and to process their feelings and grief. Yoga, Niia, Talk group circles, Cognitive work, Crafts, Bodywork, Free time, Downtime, time in nature and time to rest. All of the women are scared and nervous at first and leave feeling loved and respected for their experience. There is no time limit on processing grief. Anywhere from 2-3 weeks to 35 years! Pregnancy and infant loss is a traumatic PTSD experience that doctors and hospitals are not prepared to handle properly. Doctors are unprepared for stillbirth! It truly breaks my heart to know how unprepared they are. Calling to tell the story: Isolated and alone, Felt validated, Felt safe Bring them together and nurture them. I realized that time doesn't heal if you aren't going to work on it. It brought me to my knees. I could now relate to other people who had gone through the same It wasn’t my job to heal them it was my job to hold the space. Learned to feel my feelings and not push them away. It allowed me to cry and mope around and just feel. Gave myself permission to be with myself where I was at the moment. Honoring this in myself. It is not going to go away. There will be times now I still feel the pain. Allowing the idea of integration of the experience. Conflict of what we are going through to the outside. Versus what’s going on on the inside. "I’m fine" attitude! Safe space is created to reconnect to themselves. I am transformed into this new fully developed human. I embrace all parts of myself. I choose to be vulnerable. Kiley kept her own Divorce private and put on a brave mask. With does grief look like and feel like? The reason she created HOPE from her own transformational growth after infant loss. Expanding to a wider community that allows a safe place for the unraveling to unfold. Trying to rebuild yourself all in a setting and power of community. How can we create communities where people help people? I see the future of training health professionals. Helping men become vulnerable too! Life is really hard. We all need help. Being able to accept the full picture of life is complex. We don’t have to be defined by our pain and experience. It wasn’t until I actively participated in our own growth that we heal. We all need a guide. We all need someone to walk with you through your pain. I believe Kiley is that spiritual guide. Kiley's next retreat is in April in Northern CA You can reach out to Kiley anytime!!
