Full Rig Info: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundown/black-pumasSubscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeIn just seven years since meeting based on a recommendation, Eric Burton and Adrian Quesada formed the Black Pumas, released two albums, and have already been nominated for seven Grammys. However, this fruitful friendship was almost never developed.Quesada was enrolled at the University of Texas but flunking out due to his dedication to guitar over textbooks. His parents gave him a proposition: Either stay home in Laredo, or return to Austin without a guitar in hand to focus on studying. He went with option B and headed back for school in Austin—or so his parents thought. Quesada took his remaining book money (about $200) and headed to Ray Hennig's Heart of Texas, where he snagged a Squier Telecaster Thinline. His parents eventually figured out the switcheroo, but Quesada was determined and hasn't looked back. (Side note: The family obviously sees and supports his musical talents, and attended Black Pumas' Ryman show the night before the filming of this Rig Rundown.) That matador move pulled off by Quesada allowed him to become a longtime fixture in the Austin music scene with bands Brownout, Ocote Soul Sound, Spanish Gold, Echocentrics, and Grupo Fantasma (with whom he played for over 15 years, earning a 2011 Grammy for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album). He started to explore new ideas that didn't fit the mold for Grupo, and needed someone to narrate his musical vistas. A friend recommended he link up with Austin newcomer Eric Burton, who traded his busking spot on the Santa Monica pier for the bright lights of Sixth Street. The duo met up, and as the results prove, the rest is history. Before the Black Pumas' second headlining show at the Ryman Auditorium in downtown Nashville, bandleader Adrian Quesada, bassist Brendan Bond, and band tech Bryan Wilkinson invited PG's Chris Kies into the hallowed grounds for a chill conversation about their tonal tools. During our time with the Black Pumas, we learned about Quesada's love for tremolo (he even included it as a secret weapon in a semi-hollow Jazzmaster), Bond's fateful trip to the Wilco Loft in Chicago, and why a '59 ES-125 is Wilkinson's perfect pairing with Burton's expressive and emotive voice.Full Rig Info: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundown/black-pumasSubscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeWin Guitar Gear: https://bit.ly/GiveawaysPG Don't Miss a Rundown: http://bit.ly/RIgRundownENLMerch & Magazines: https://shop.premierguitar.comPG's Facebook: https://facebook.com/premierguitarPG's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/premierguitar/PG's Twitter: https://twitter.com/premierguitarPG's Threads: https://threads.net/@premierguitarPG's TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@premierguitar[Brought to you by D'Addario: https://ddar.io/wykyk-rr & https://ddari.io/xpnd.rr]© Copyright Gearhead Communications LLC, 20240:00 - D'Addario XPND Pedalboard0:15 - Chris Kies Intro1:57 - Adrian Quesada Intro3:15 - Touring with Vintage Gear4:02 - Adrian Quesada's Fender Custom Shop Telecaster6:13 - Playing with Fingers or Pick8:03 - College or Guitar?9:14 - Adrian Quesada's Strings10:00 - Adrian Quesada's Gibson ES-34511:53 - Playing ES-345 with DI Fuzz13:11 - Adrian Quesada's Fender Custom Shop Jazzmaster Thinline14:27 - Built-in Tremolo17:33 - Adrian Quesada's Fender Limited Edition '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb18:36 - Adrian Quesada's Pedalboard30:05 - D'Addario XPND & John Bohlinger30:55 - Brendan Bond Intro31:49 - Brendan Bond's 1974 Fender P Bass36:15 - Brendan Bond Fingerstyle & Bass...

When Austin's cumbia-funk institution Grupo Fantasma went to record their seventh album at a studio in Tornillo, Texas, they had no idea that right next door was a tent city for detained immigrant youth operated by ICE. When they found out, they decided they had to do something. So they teamed up with fellow legends Ozomatli and Locos Por Juana to create a sinister funk tune with a message about the walls that divide us. On this edition of How I Made It, members of Grupo Fantasma break down the creative process behind their new song "The Wall."

Of all the ways to discover a song, there are few more inviting and experiential than driving down a desert highway and hearing something come in over the radio—a real life transmission. That was the case for host Jason P. Woodbury driving to Tucson, Arizona, in 2022, when “Puedas Decir De Mi,” by Adrian Quesada featuring Gaby Moreno came over the airwaves of KCXI Tucson community radio. Quesada is best known as one-half of The Black Pumas, his duo with singer/songwriter Eric Burton. But Quesada's musical output is varied: he's worked with Brownout, a Latin hard rock-tinged outfit, Grupo Fantasma, Adrian Younge, and many more. In 2022, he released his debut solo album, Boleros Psicodélicos, followed that same year by Jaguar Sound. He joined us to discuss his trajectory, his worldwide success, his roots in hip-hop, and much more. Transmissions is produced in partnership with Talkhouse Podcast Network. Hello and welcome to How Did I Get Here? From The Vault! Today we go back to episode 213 with Black pumas founder, producer and artist, Adrian Quesada. This show was originally released on 10/17/13. Adrian has released an incredible amount of amazing music through all of his bands including Black Pumas and his amazing "Boleros Psicodelicos" album (my favorite album of 2020) since this came out and has become one of my favorite musician/producers around. Below are my original notes form the show.  My guest for episode 213 is Grammy award winning producer, Adrian Quesada! I met Adrian a few months ago when i did the Elliot Smith tribute show. He was in the house band. I knew he was in Grupo Fantasma and Brownout and the he was producing a lot of my friends, Davíd Garza, Suzanna Choffel and Jazz Mills to name a few. Anyway, he's a great guy, immensely talented and we hit it off at the Elliot tribute, I asked him to come by and be on the show and he did. we talked about Grupo Fantasma, the Echocentric, Brownout, playing with Prince, Prince, producing, growing up skate punk in Laredo, Golden Globe parties, Grammy's and much, much more. I hope you enjoy getting to know Adrian Quesada. I did.

Austin resident and master of psychedelic funk, Kalu James, sits down with Tom to reminiscence about their fateful first introduction in the rugged mountains of Utah. Along the way, hear a journey of musical enlightenment, peek into Kalu's storytelling, and sit down with two friends who found their way together during a period of isolation. Kalu and the Electric Joint are considered one of the best bands on the Austin music scene right now. With their distinct sound, they have a vibrant live show that enhances their dynamic and uplifting songwriting. Kalu James sits down with Tom and shows his off stage persona as the two share stories of when they met, how their pandemic experience shaped them, and how their experience of moving to Austin has aligned (or misaligned) with their expectations. Texas Monthly has said Kalu and the Electric Joint “pulls Austin's sounds into the global diaspora: this is psych rock with more than a dash of Jamaican dub, Southern soul, and Nigerian funk.” Kalu James grew up the son of a village chief in Nigeria and moved to Austin to enmesh himself in the live music scene. He's been on the scene as a songwriter for years, and when he began a month-long residency at the Continental Club Gallery with another Austin mainstay, guitarist JT Holt, they both knew there was chemistry afoot. Their weekly shows would last nearly three years and along the way, drummer John Speice joined the party, officially forming Kalu And The Electric Joint. The Joint was originally an only-in-Austin conception. Now, they have released their debut album, to introduce the world to the blues-rock, American soul and African polyrhythms. Time Undone, recorded over the period of a year out in Driftwood, Texas, and produced by Brett Orrison (Black Angels, Widespread Panic) include guest stars from members of Widespread Panic, War On Drugs, The Sword and Grupo Fantasma, who all contribute to a soulful world groove. Enjoy Kalu and the Electric Joint's single Garden of Eden at the end of the podcast.

For more than two decades, Grammy-winning guitarist and producer Beto Martinez has imprinted Austin with his Latin-leaning outputs: Grupo Fantasma, Money Chicha, and Brownout. And though psychedelia’s always been a major factor in Martinez’s formulas, with some conceptualizing on behalf of Dos Santos drummer Daniel Villarreal, the two have dawned on a new Latin psych-soul […]

¡Feliz Navidad! The runway to success was short for Black Pumas. Five months after releasing their debut album in 2019, the Austin-based band was nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammys. And now, one year later, Black Pumas are up for Album of the Year for the deluxe version of their debut. Guitarist/Producer Adrian Quesada and Singer Eric Burton met at a crossroads in both of their careers. Adrian left his first band, Grupo Fantasma after a successful run, including a years-long mentorship by Prince. While looking for a new direction, a friend suggested he work with Eric—changing both of their fortunes. In this episode, Adrian talks about being taken under Prince’s wing, Eric reminisces about writing the group’s biggest hit in church, and they explain their unique chemistry that’s led to instant success. “Bring My Flowers Now” Tanya Tucker. Compuesta por Brandi Carlile, Phil Hanseroth, Tim Hanseroth y Tanya Tucker. “Crowded Table” The Highwomen. Compuesta por Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby y Lori McKenna. “My Love Will Not Change” Aubrie Sellers featuring Steve Earle. Compuesta por Billy Burnette y Shawn Camp. “Stay High” Brittany Howard. Compuesta por Brittany Howard. “Thoughts and Prayers” Drive-By Truckers. The Dirt And The Stars. That’s How Rumors Get Started. Adrian Quesada first made a name for himself as a founding member and producer of the Grammy winning latin-rock bigband, Grupo Fantasma. Since then, he's been writing and working on several projects. Most recently, he partnered with songwriter Eric Burton and formed Black Pumas, an Austin Texas based band that has just released their debut album on ATO Records. It's a collection of classic soul-flavored tracks in great songwriting, but is not simply a retro retread. Taking queues from hip-hop and psychedelic genres and parring them with a mix of classic and modern recording techniques, and a live off-the-floor approach, The Black Pumas have created a future classic of their own. Larry interviewed Adrian back for Tape Op Issue #94, so having Geoff Stanfield, Tape Op online publisher catch up with him was long overdue. Enjoy! Sponsored by Yousician yousician.com

Both old and new, Austin-based band Black Pumas is centered around guitarist and producer Adrian Quesada and 27-year-old songwriter Eric Burton. Grammy Award-winning Quesada has played in Grupo Fantasma and Brownout, and accompanied artists from Prince to Daniel Johnston. Burton grew up in church and then got heavily involved in musical theater. He arrived in Austin in 2015 after busking his way across the country from Los Angeles, and connected with Quesada on the phone. From idea to session to self-titled debut album, they've been making music that is neither retro nor derivative, with influences ranging from Sam Cooke to Neil Young and Ghostface Killah. Episode 020 of *The Upful LIFE Podcast* returns in its new every-third-week scheduling, back in the saddle with a revealing interview with very special guest Ms. Anna Moss, one half of the quirky, funky, folky, jazzy, and downright intoxicating musical duo Handmade Moments. The group, whom I've worked with a couple of times in the past few years, were coming through the Bay Area for an exquisite gig in a redwood grove at UC Berkeley's picturesque botanical gardens. In between soundcheck, their masterful performance, and a quick departure northbound for the iconic Oregon Country Fair, Anna Moss was kind enough to carve out some time for me: both before their set and after. Please enjoy a heartfelt conversation on a their unique path taken, tragedy and healing, overcoming adversity, and what the future may hold for the enigmatic singer and multi-instrumentalist, her partner Joel Ludford, and their magical musical project, Handmade Moments. ANNA MOSS Intro > Interview @ 17min 30secs We begin with a brief discussion of our stunning environs and the towering redwoods in which we would enjoy their concert at UC Berkeley, before embarking on a trip into the way-back machine and their humble Ozark beginnings. The Eureka Springs, AR-bred singer/songwriter/saxophonist takes us into her formative years with two influential godmothers, progressive women way ahead of their time, who introduced Anna to the likes of Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Louis Armstrong. From there she discovered Nina Simone, Etta James, and one begins to understand just what and who inspired this young woman to emanate a wisdom, voice and aura far beyond her years. Moss then takes us to the moment when she first met Joel Ludford, and how their musical relationship and artistic dynamic took flight. Anna recalls the early days with the rock-band precursor to Handmade Moments, a larger ensemble called Don't Stop Please. Moss reflects on how she and Joel evolved into a new endeavor from the ashes of this band, and how one can trace the DNA of Handmade Moments to this embryonic project.  From there, we get into the thick of things, as Anna details how Handmade Moments made their bones on a 5 year grind of touring, traveling, busking, writing, gigging, and just keeping their proverbial nose to the grindstone. Yet on one fateful May 2016 afternoon in glorious Northern California, their beloved bio-diesel bus- that they spent six months laboring to build, and lived, toured and gigged in for nearly a year- was struck by two vehicles in a devastating head-on collision. In an instant, everything changed. In our conversation, Moss takes us through this experience in harrowing detail. The resulting wreck required a Medivac for Ludford, who was severely injured from the waist down. He spent a month in the hospital, three more in a wheelchair. Moss herself had a concussion, two other passengers were injured as well, and all four called themselves lucky to be alive. At this point in our interview, Anna must excuse herself to soundcheck and then play their gig in the Redwood grove in the UC Botanical Garden. For the pause in the conversation, please enjoy Handmade Moments' exquisite cover of Aaliyah's timeless "R U That Somebody?", and then we return to the interview after their performance. After the riveting set, Moss was kind enough to finish up this story and share a little bit more about herself and the group. In the immediate aftermath of this accident, she and Ludford retreated into the nurturing bosom of Nevada City, CA to recover, and begin the healing process the only way they knew how, through music. Over the next three months, these meditations and ruminations fueled the writing, recording, and realization of Paw Paw Tree, their third full length LP, and first for Jumpsuit Records.  From there, Moss takes us up into the present, including the pair relocating to the great city of NOLA, their tours of Europe, South America, and a recent coast-to-coast stateside excursion as direct support for their pals Yonder Mountain String Band. She exudes excitement for both Oregon Country Fair and Northwest String Summit. To close out this fascinating powwow, Moss touches on some of her favorite, best-kept secrets in the music scene back in Arkansas, making sure to shine a light on some friends, peers, and collaborators back home. She also gives us the scoop on their plans for the future, beginning with a long-awaited Handmade Moments covers album, and Anna's goal for a New Orleans jazz release, something she'd like to create and record right there in the Crescent City.  Anna Moss is a very special artist and human being, and I feel lucky to be in her orbit, and Joel's as well. As I'm fond of saying, 'twas an honor and privilege to sit and share these conversations with her in such marvelous, majestic surrounds. Keep eyes and ears peeled for all things Handmade Moments, this duo is destined for greatness.    HILARY GLEASON Interview @ 1:10:35   Another inspiring female in our extended music family, Hilary Gleason is CEO of Level, a philanthropic consulting firm specializing in humanitarian efforts. Hers is a story of humble beginnings as well, and Gleason was kind enough to take a half-hour out of her extremely busy professional schedule, meet me in the lobby of SF's posh Park 55 hotel, to speak to Upful LIFE. (Please excuse the crowd noise, we did the best we could) Among her myriad goals, Hilary intends to inspire others to seek out their passions, and to take on missions that really matter, not just to ourselves, but to society, to the culture, and to humanity. Her various benevolent endeavors including traveling to Africa and working with neurosurgical teams in Uganda, and also boots-on-the-ground efforts with US-based non-profit organizations like Headcount.org, as well as WinterWondergrass, among others. Gleason also shares a very cool story about how she first got connected with the very same music scene that brings so many of us together: the extended Lettuce/Soulive/Royal Family, taking us back a few years to when she initially landed in Brooklyn and found herself at Brooklyn Bowl's Bowlive, and how kind folks like guitarist Eric Krasno (Soulive) unknowingly helped Gleason identify her path and passion in life. Now she is in turn becoming a facilitator for others, leading by example and being the change; Gleason has dedicated her professional life to this mission. Hilary is a shining example of what can happen when you follow your heart AND the funk, only to find your purpose in life along the way. Keep shining, Hilary Gleason!     *Vibe Junkie JAM of the Week*    The white-hot Austin, TX-based project Black Pumas unveil "Colors", recorded live at Studio 1A earlier this summer. What a powerful slab of emotion, an aesthetic and an undeniable vibe that feels not just authentic, but is nothing short of cathartic for the listener. WARNING: Goosebumps!! Shoutout to Randy Bayers at FunkitBlog and John Speice IV (Brownout, Grupo Fantasma) for putting me onto these phenomenal cats outta Tejas. Holy Golden is the multifaceted musical world of Leslie Schott and Andrew Valenti. who met during a lunar eclipse on Martha's Vineyard and soon began crafting mythological mini-worlds into home-recorded albums, music videos, short films, and photo stories.  Holy Golden's music blends euphoric dream-pop with lo-fi garage rock to create songs that feel both vulnerable and mysterious.  They have released two full-length albums, several music videos, and a new EP, toured throughout the US twice and will release a new album, Otherworld, recorded from a historic ballroom in Newport, Rhode Island, will be released February 2 along with the single from the album,  "Arrival" . Money Chicha is an Austin, Texas based group featuring members of the Grammy-award winning Latin orchestra Grupo Fantasma and its offshoot funk outfit Brownout. They play a fuzzed-out, reverb-drenched and percussion-heavy music inspired by the sounds of Peru and Colombia in the 60’s and 70’s, sometimes called “Chicha” music, known for Latin beats, psychedelic surf guitar pyrotechnics and melodies influenced by the indigenous culture of the Andes mountains. Money Chicha is a modern translation of this South American musical style by highly skilled veteran artists.  Money Chicha’s debut album Echo en Mexico was released in July 2016 on Vampisoul/Munster records, and they have been featured in numerous compilations and tours.

Along the Texas-Mexican border in the 19th century, Mexicans, Native Americans, and Anglo-Americans living in the region intermingled with European immigrants looking for new opportunities. The clash and fusion of multiple languages and traditions resulted in a distinct "Tejano" culture. Tejano music is influenced by Mexican storytelling ballads called corridos, accordion-based polkas of norteño music, Anglo-American fiddle music, mariachi bands, Colombian cumbia, and the lively brass section of small, local bands called orquestas—not to mention salsa, rock, jazz, blues, funk, and country. Border music also owes its sound to German immigrants who filled dance halls with waltzes, polkas, and the distinctive tones of the accordion. Narciso Martínez was one of the first and most influential accordion players in the border region due to his virtuosic, fast-paced playing. When he brought together the accordion with the bajo sexto (12-string bass guitar) in the 1930s, conjunto music was born.
