One day your life will be summarized by a single line. A beginning date.An ending date. And a dash in between. The question is: What are you doing with your dash? On this episode of Like It Matters Radio, Mr. Black delivers a direct challenge about purpose, legacy, leadership, and eternity. Because life is not measured by possessions, titles, or status. It is measured by people. Who are you helping? Who is breathing easier because you lived? Who is stronger because your life intersected with theirs? What are you building that will outlive you? Drawing from Isaiah 61, Luke 4, Viktor Frankl, Stephen Covey, and the book of Job, Mr. Black breaks down the deeper meaning behind being in the People Business. Not using people. Not managing people.Building people. This episode explores the powerful CARE Framework: Cultivate Potential Align Hearts & Purpose Restore Healthy Culture Empower Ownership Because when people feel cared for: commitment rises engagement deepens cultures heal performance improves Mr. Black also examines the three failed comforters in the book of Job: Eliphaz the traditionalist Bildad the legalist Zophar the accuser Together they reveal what happens when leaders choose explanation over compassion, certainty over mercy, and systems over people. This powerful episode also features interviews with four recent graduates of the Leadership Awakening class, sharing firsthand how the experience impacted their mindset, relationships, leadership, faith, and direction in life. Their stories bring the message of transformation out of theory and into real life. This is an emotional, challenging, and deeply personal episode about becoming the kind of leader, parent, mentor, spouse, and friend who leaves behind more than success. A life fully spent.A dash that mattered. Because at the end of life, the question will not simply be: “What did you accomplish?” But rather: “What on earth were you doing?” Inspiration. Education. Application. When you live your life like it matters… it does.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Every leader thinks they’re in the product business…the profit business…the performance business… They’re not. They’re in the people business. On this episode of Like It Matters Radio, Mr. Black breaks down the core truth behind every organization, team, and outcome:people are the cause—everything else is the effect. The greatest expense? People. The greatest reward? People. The greatest potential—and the greatest problems? People. This episode challenges leaders to stop managing results and start developing humans. Because when you build better people, everything else rises with it—culture, performance, relationships, and long-term success. Mr. Black introduces the CARE Framework, a practical system for leading in the people business: Cultivate Potential – Develop strengths, not just assign tasks Align Hearts & Purpose – Connect people to something that matters Restore & Reinforce Culture – Protect the emotional environment Empower Ownership – Trust people to lead, not just follow This isn’t soft leadership. It’s how high-performing teams are actually built. You’ll also uncover how people are formed: Early life experiences shape their map of reality Hebb’s Law wires repeated experiences into patterns Social Learning Theory shows we become what we see Attachment Theory defines how we trust and connect Mimetic Theory reveals we desire what others model Which means this: People aren’t broken. They’re programmed. And leaders who understand that don’t just fix problems—they rebuild people from the inside out. Because when people feel cared for, they commit. When they commit, they engage. When they engage, performance follows. So the real question is: Are you using people…or are you building them? This is an Hour of Power for leaders ready to stop chasing outcomes and start leading what actually drives them. Inspiration. Education. Application. When you live your life like it matters… it does.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Send us Fan MailA couple of months ago, I shared a simple message on LinkedIn: we have to get back to being a people business. The response was overwhelming. Everyone agreed. But what was missing was the how.In this episode, I'm digging into what's really happening right now and why so many of us feel like we're constantly reacting instead of actually leading. Between the pressure to perform, the amount of communication coming in, and everything we're responsible for, it's easy to slip into managing tasks instead of leading people. But this isn't just a culture conversation. It's a performance conversation.Because when we lose connection, it shows up in leasing, in team consistency, in communication, and ultimately in results.I share a couple of real moments that brought this into focus for me. One with a developer who challenged a team to stop leading from behind the desk and start with the experience, showing prospects the dream first. And another from a coaching call where everything looked fine on paper, but the real story only came out once we slowed down and asked better questions. The reality is we don't have a knowledge problem. We have an execution problem. If we want different results, we have to show up differently. That means slowing down enough to understand what's really happening, getting back into real conversations with our teams, and focusing on what actually moves the needle. We're also taking this a step further with an upcoming class series. The first session will focus on leasing through an operational lens on May 7, followed by a manager class on May 28 and a multi-site leader class on June 4. Each one is built to move beyond theory and into real execution so you can actually apply it the next day.Busy isn't the goal. Better is.Let's get back to being a people business.

People are inescapable in the field of business. Even if you're on your own, your customers are people. And, it's hard to think of a business where you're not having to deal with any people in order to serve those customers. So, people in the input, people in the output. What sort of approach should a business owner have in his day-to-day interactions with other people?

Hosts Jamal and Adam interview about 18 Years of Soldera with owner/founder Joe Fustolo- In this episode: Joe shares how he got into real estate straight out of college—choosing it over careers in orthodontics and psychology—and how his entrepreneurial mindset pushed him toward building his own company. Soldera was created to solve a gap in the industry: high fees with little support. From day one, the mission was clear—build a brokerage for brokers, focused on value, accessibility, and long-term success.A pivotal moment came immediately after launch when demand surged unexpectedly, forcing rapid growth and operational scaling. That early pressure helped shape Soldera into a boutique, high-performing brokerage with a strong emphasis on selective hiring, culture, and agent success.Joe emphasizes that ethics and relationships are the foundation of longevity. His philosophy is simple but powerful:Protect your reputation at all costsFocus on client experience over commissionsBuild lifelong relationships, not one-off transactionsThe conversation also dives into how the industry has evolved—from pre-internet listings and manual processes to today's AI-driven tools. While Joe embraces technology, he stresses that real estate remains a people business, and those who maintain a personal touch will always stand out.Key insights include:AI should enhance efficiency, not replace human connectionThe “road less traveled” (like direct mail or personalized service) is becoming more effective againSuccess comes from adapting, learning, and staying relevantJoe also offers a candid take on starting a brokerage, highlighting that it's far more complex than it appears—requiring leadership, infrastructure, and long-term commitment beyond just selling homes. The episode wraps with some lighter moments, including Joe's favorite Portland restaurant—Ox—and his go-to drinks depending on the setting.

In this episode of The Sprinkler Nerd Show, Andy Humphrey sits down with Justin Wilson, founder of American Irrigation in Georgetown, Texas. With nearly three decades in the irrigation service business, Justin shares how he built a company that now runs 17+ service trucks and completes thousands of irrigation jobs each year. Justin explains why "the service business is the people business," emphasizing that successful companies must care for both their customers and their team members. The conversation dives into practical lessons from the field—how quality inspections and training help maintain standards across a large team, why many irrigation problems come down to simple issues like poorly installed sprinkler heads, and how contractors can build long-term customer trust. Andy and Justin also explore the future of irrigation, including smart controllers, the challenges of managing thousands of different systems, and the growing pressure on water resources. Justin argues that contractors will need to shift toward more efficient irrigation methods, better system design, and prioritizing which landscapes truly need water. The episode wraps with advice for contractors: stop searching for the "perfect technician" and instead invest in training the next generation of irrigation professionals.

What does real leadership look like when you don't have all theanswers? In this episode of Bealls Legacy, Arne Lemke - SVP of People atBealls - joins us for a candid conversation about leadership, legacy, and why the strongest leaders focus on building the right teams rather than having every solution themselves. After stepping into a new leadership role following the retirement of a long-time mentor, Arne shares what it means to carry culture forward without ego, why Bealls is shifting from “Human Resources” to a people-first philosophy, and how trust, mentorship, and service define effective leadership.
