“There's a great David Bowie song called ‘Memory of a Free Festival.' It's a song about a concert that he organized in Beckenham in August 1969, the same weekend of Woodstock. He wrote this song about that concert. And in August 1969, also, his father died just 10 days or so before the concert. And his funeral took place days before.So the song that Bowie wrote is, I think, deeply resonant of the death of his father, as well as about the concert itself. And it's an extraordinary song about the end of the 1960s as well. I think there's a sort of critical consensus that it's with this song that Bowie really started coming into his own. And the second part is just kind of chorus. ‘The Sun Machine is coming down, and we are going to have a party.' And it's kind of demonic. It's an extraordinary refrain, which really, it's hypnotic. It's mesmerizing. And I found myself trying to think about this idea of a sun machine. What is a sun machine? How might we describe a sun machine? What do we feel about the idea of a sun machine? Many people describe themselves as book lovers but there is no doubt about Nicholas Royle's devotion to the printed word. As a writer, editor and creative writing teacher, books are fundamental to his life. Georgina Godwin meets Royle to discuss his new book. ‘White Spines: Confessions of a Book Collector' is part memoir, part non-fiction and explores the secondhand shops that Royle used to build his 1,000-book collection of Picador fiction.

Ashwarya Samkaria, a Masters in English Literature (University of Delhi) and a Masters in Performance Studies (Ambedkar University Delhi) is currently working as an independent researcher whose publications in journals on Ecocriticism in Indian Fiction and on Body and Performance are forthcoming. She is also trained in the (neo)classical dance form Odissi and has performed extensively in India and abroad. Her areas of interest are performance studies, ecocriticism, postcolonialism, gender studies, and creative writing. Barbara Krystal is a Marine Biologist and Author. She is writing a dissertation questioning the traits we use to define the human when we come into contact with marine invertebrates. Basak Almaz is a graduate of English Language and Literature and a grad student of American Culture and Literature at Hacettepe University, Turkey. She is a research assistant at Istanbul Aydin University and writing her MA thesis on the relation between climate change and neoliberalism through sci-fi novels of Kim Stanley Robinson. Christopher Collier is an educator and ecological advocate, working at the intersection of art and cultural ecology. With a background in academia and community art, he currently teaches at Anglia Ruskin University, and City Lit college in London, England, as well as regularly facilitating workshops in a variety of contexts. He is a volunteer Ranger with the London National Park City organisation. Erik Lauks is a writer living in Munich. Currently occupied by consciousness. Huiying Ng works to expand the possibility of agroecological landscapes in Southeast Asia - she is a doctoral researcher at the Rachel Carson Centre for Environment and Society at the Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich, and an occasional-editor of Foodscape Pages, a journa-zine dedicated to food, community and inspiration in Southeast Asia. In our last episode of the season, we take one one of the most requested futures: telepathy! What would it be like to be able to link minds, and communicate brain to brain? And how likely is it that we’ll ever get this kind of technology? We start the episode by talking to Roger Luckhurst, a Professor in Modern and Contemporary Literature at Birkbeck, University of London, who explains where the word telepathy comes from, and how it totally obsessed men of science in the early 1800’s. The writer Nicholas Royle is a passionate supporter of libraries and a devoted bibliophile. As a young man his passion for books was so strong, in fact, that some of the books he borrowed from libraries didn't manage to find their way back to their homes on the library shelves. Now, over three decades on, Nicholas is finally doing the right thing and returning the books to the places he first encountered them - Manchester, Paris and London - hoping to avoid any hefty fines in his attempt to straighten his accounts. Along the way he considers his evolving relationship with both books and libraries, meeting other writers such as Vahni Capildeo and Polar Bear to hear about books they have neglected to return because they loved them so much; he also speaks with others who would never dream of failing to take their books back, such as AL Kennedy. Nicholas also meets a successful journalist who went to the same school as him and was one of the last to borrow the novel before Nicholas himself took it on extended leave. Producer: Geoff Bird.

Wilfred Bion (1897 – 1979) was an influential (if at times 'gnomic') psychoanalyst who spent much of his working life at the Tavistock clinic in London. He is perhaps best known for Experiences in Groups (London:Tavistock 1961), a key text in the emerging group psychotherapy and encounter group movements of the 1960s,and for Learning from Experience (1962) Podcast produced and presented by Naomi Wynter-Vincent. Naomi writes: The title of this podcast, Making the best of a bad job.' refers to an essay written by Wilfred Bion in his final year (in 1979, when he was 81. Both the essay and its title are classic Bion: wryly self-deprecating, yet devastating in its emotional impact, the essay describes the way that 'when two personalities meet, an emotional storm is created' and the way that psychotherapy can only ever aim to 'make the best of a bad job' by turning that storm between the two people in the room to good account. I chose it as a title not least as an ironic reference to the progress of my own PhD. Naomi Wynter-Vincent is a PhD student at Sussex University, writing her thesis to demonstrate the many ways in which Bion's work can help us to think about writing. The writers she is looking at in detail include: JG Ballard, BS Johnson, Stevie Smith, Jean Rhys, Mary Butts, Sigmund Freud, and Nicholas Royle. As she says in the podcast, she thinks Bion is an interesting writer in his own right: he experiments with form and theory to 'dream' and 're-dream' the traumas of his own life, which include his experiences during the First World War.
