Ruud Kleinpaste: Yellow-legged Hornets

When I arrived in New Zealand as an immigrant (in 1978), the Asian Paperwasp arrived here too. I remember I was impressed by the New Zealand obsessions to keep these invaders out of the kiwi ecosystems. A few years later I started working for the Ministry of Agriculture and the Asian (or Chinese) Paperwasp was still being pursued; unfortunately without success. We tried to create some pro-active techniques to stop unwanted critters making it to our wonderful country and every time some new pest arrives, I feel awful and ready to have a crack at a counter offensive. So – here we are …. With a real “Hornet” (Hornets are a different group of wasps): The yellow-Legged Hornet. Have a look at the pictures of these brutes: they have yellow legs and are way bigger than the wasps we are used to. They are originally from East and South-East Asia (My birth place: Indonesia!!) and rapidly moving all over the place: the rest of Asia, Korea, Japan, Now Europe, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy Belgium and the UK. Almost exactly 8 years ago it showed its “EU Passport” in the Netherlands; Let me tell you that the Dutch moved rather quickly to knock that hornet on the head… Good Luck!! Rather recently it was found in Ireland – an island with perhaps better chances to eradicate it. This Hymenopteran is on the move!! Nobody likes this beastie – it simply has no sense of humour; in terms of its dietary preference you could say that this Hornet is as selective as a vacuum cleaner. It goes for all sorts of native insects (flies, beetles, wasps, honey bees) ripe fruits, pollen and nectar, as well as people with allergies to wasp stings. So right now is the time to gather the Nature Nerds of our country and start our counter attack, together with the Ministry of Primary Industries. So far we've found 2 adult male yellow-legged hornets in Grafton and Albany – that was some months ago. A week ago there was a female (a Queen) in Glenfield, trying to build a brand-new nest. That nest was still small and light in colour: The very beginning of the nest, made by the queen (a so-called “primary nest”) This nest can grow much bigger as the colony builds up in numbers (up to 60 centimetre diameter); so far MPI haven't found any established nests yet So, how can we all help to give MPI a hand getting rid of this pest species: Gardeners are usually extremely observant, when it comes to insects on the property and in this case the identification is relatively easy (especially with NatureNerd kids in the household!!) Identification: The Hornets (on the left) are quite a bit bigger than German wasps (on the right), common wasps and our established species of paperwasps. Thorax and abdomen have different colours too. Wings rather dark and not translucent – I reckon most people can see that easily. At this stage we simply do not have a useful treatment to kill these rotters in your garden; I'm sure some scientists as well as back-yard inventors might try their luck with all sorts of concoctions, fatal to the hornets, but in my opinion it's best to do the following as soon as you find a nest or some big hornets in your garden: First Report it to MPI: Contact MPI's exotic pest and disease hotline: 0800 809 966 Carefully take a photo of the suspect insect(s) Alternatively: report these pests online: https://report.mpi.govt.nz/pest/ Have a look at the Fact Sheet: https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=keep+an+eye+out+for+yellow-legged+hornetsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Leslie is joined by Dr. Robert Shapiro, Chairman of Sonecon, an economic advisory firm, and a Senior Fellow of the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University. The two examine the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) again handing President Trump a bleak set of jobs numbers, just one month after he fired the agency's commissioner over weak employment data. On Friday morning, the BLS reported that nonfarm payroll employment rose by only 22,000 in August. Analysts had forecast that the economy would add 75,000 jobs during the month. According to the agency, gains made in health care were offset by losses in federal government employment, as well as mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction. While July's figures were revised up to 79,000 from 73,000, June's numbers were revised down by 27,000, dropping from 14,000 to minus-13,000. That means this past June marked the first time the labor market shed jobs since late 2020. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate edged up to 4.3 percent from 4.2 percent in August. Leslie and Dr. Shapiro also discuss his latest blog, "The Lies Behind Trump's D.C. Troop Sure." (Link: https://washingtonmonthly.com/2025/08/18/the-lies-behind-trumps-d-c-troop-surge/) In it, Dr. Shapiro breaks down how President Trump's justification for deploying troops in Washington, D.C. on the basis of crime is false, as FBI data show crime rates in the capital have sharply declined and are lower than in many comparable U.S. cities.  Instead, Dr. Shapiro details how Trump's actions reflect a partisan strategy and authoritarian impulse to consolidate power and intimidate opposition, rather than any genuine concern for public safety. Welcome to Mysteries to Die For.I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you in the heart of a mystery. All stories are structured to challenge you to beat the detective to the solution. Jack and I perform these live, front to back, no breaks, no fakes, no retakes. The rules for law and order create the boundaries for civil co-existence and, ideally, the backdrops for individuals, families, and companies to grow and thrive. Breaking these rules puts civil order at risk. And while murder is the Big Daddy of crimes, codified ordinances across municipal divisions, counties, states, and countries show the nearly endless ways there are to create mayhem. This season, we put our detective skills to the test. This is Season 8, Anything but Murder. This is Episode 16, house arson is the featured crime. This is First Reports are Rarely Right by Larry M. KeetonDELIBERATIONDrake has a hot one on his hands and needs our help to put the pieces together on this arson case. (Then maybe Cassandra will keep hiring him.) Here are the people on his suspect list in the order we met them:Jack Phillips, owner of the house and disgruntled claimantCommissioner Donna Russell, the Hummer-driving road hogTeresa Kamps, HOA president who lives across from PhillipsRachel Quinn, the Fire Marshall recently promoted to Code ComplianceHere are the facts as Drake has unearthed them:Jack Phillips inherited his parents' home after their too early death. He blames HOA president Teresa Kamps for it. In retaliation, he's let the home run down, just to be an eye sore;On his visit to Phillips, who owns a 30-acre property, Drake was run off the road by a Hummer with a re-election sign on the door for Donna Russell; While interviewing Phillips, Drake sees a collection of pagers that Phillips says he uses to track delivery of restored cars to international buyers; The first report found cause of the house fire to be errant fireworks. Drake and Cassandra found inconsistencies between the original photos and what Drake finds on scene; Under protective sheets are untouched boxes and furniture Phillips is listing in his insurance claim;Phillips states recent maintenance was limited to spraying the roof to protect against moss. It was determined that zinc was used, which is highly flammable;HOA president Teresa Kamps had a 4th of July party that included Donna Russell. She denies setting fire to the house. She admits flying her drone but says she does not spy. There are opinions to the contrary. While Drake is inspecting, a second fire ignites from the baseboard heaters. Inspection after the fact uncovered batteries and melted plastic boxes and pager components in the heaters;Rachel Quinn was the original Fire Marshal on the case. She was also the woman on Phillips computer background. She was recently promoted to Code Compliance and her first action is to use a newly passed code to tear down the twice-burned house;Phillips and the county just negotiated the sale of the 30-acre property for $1.3 million dollars;Jack Phillips just wants what the insurance company owes him;Donna Russell is behind on her re-election bid and wants the HOA for their votes;Teresa Kamps wants the eye-sore gone from across the street;Rachel Quinn wants the promotion and to get Commissioner Russell off her back; andThe county Fire Marshal noted arson is the least prosecuted crimes and it was difficult to determine who had the most to gain. How should Drake re-write the report to get it right the second time?ABOUT True Crim House ArsonFrom my favorite source Wikipedia, comes the curated story of Thomas Sweatt. Hello, and welcome to episode 112 of the Financial Crime Weekly Podcast, I'm Chris Kirkbride. I fear that things are getting busy again, as this week is typical of so many recent weeks for this podcast in that there is a wealth of news. The sanctions news comes in the form of a host of stories concerning oil exports from both Iran and Russia, with the latter being the subject of an investigation into possible sanctions evasion in relation to the oil price cap. On fraud news, action taken across the European Union against fraudsters abusing EU funds and citizens by an old-fashioned Ponzi scheme. Key findings: 90.7% of the NSW public who attend live music agree that live music contributes to the vibrancy of cities and communities. 90.9% of respondents who work in the live music industry agree that live music can be a powerful form of cultural expression, particularly for marginalised groups. $372.7m of ticket revenue generated Best places to go out: Metropolitan – Sydney CBD Regional – Newcastle The high-cost operating environment is creating barriers to growth for the live music industry. This is episode two of the “Trauma Informed Investigations” series, where we follow a fictitious story to address the legal and human issues that arise in an organization when confronted with allegations of sexual abuse. In today's episode, we discuss how a person who first receives a report of sexual abuse should respond, including effective listening techniques and how that person can support the victim through the disclosure process. We also discuss some best practices for an organization in its initial response to these allegations. Leading the discussion is Jill Steinberg, a Partner in Ballard's Philadelphia Office. Jill is joined by Katharine Manning. Katharine is the author of “The Empathetic Workplace: Five Steps to a Compassionate, Calm, and Confident Response to Trauma on the Job”, and the President of Blackbird DC. She has worked on issues of trauma and victimization for more than 25 years.
