An overview of the first week of the federal election, and news about some Manitoba MPs facing a fight to retain their seats, is the focus of Episode 15.Part 1- Our Sunday column in the Winnipeg Sun struck a nerve after providing on-the-scene accounts of a March of crime.Crime wave in Winnipeg: Businesses and residents left to fend for themselvesBrazen thefts and organized shoplifting crews are beseiging convenience and drug stores. When the cops don't even show up to a break-in at a funeral home with corpses inside, you know the living like security guards and 7-Eleven clerks aren't a priority either- uunless their car windows have dark tint. From a reader- "I"m now wondering why we even fund the WPS any more. They do not serve us. They target us with ticketing. Thats it."12.40 Part 2- If you've been wondering how Mark Carney has been able to say he's making decisions about foreign policy without the confidence of the House of Commons, it's because on March 24th the Liberals secretly changed the Caretaker Convention Guidelines. Hear how this created " a legal and ethical gray zone." https://canada.ca/en/privy-council/services/publications/guidelines-conduct-ministers-state-exempt-staff-public-servants-election.htmlHow convenient. 19.00- You'll hear the outrageous descriptions of Pierre Poilievre by an Angus Reid Institute push poll to inflate support for Mark Carney. It's beyond outrageous.22.30- It's no wonder MSM election coverage avoids an analysis of the immigration crisis. We have a commentary from someone who knows who declared,"I've probably met a few dozen real, true refugees.... The rest are bogus. People gaming the system. People coached by consultants, lawyers, ghost agents. People using the refugee claim process to buy time. People using it to get work permits. That's how the system is built now."27.00- In his book Value(s), Mark Carney showered praise on the eco-alarmist Greta Thunberg. This of course doesn't square with his sudden support for the Canadian energy sector. The Liberal hypocrisy isn't limited to their leader. We play audio from January of one of his Ontario candidates insisting just two months ago that Canada needs even MORE carbon taxes.32.30 Part 3- Listeners and sources have provided assessments from the campaigns on the ground. After Jagmeet Singh ran the NDP out of money while propping up Justin Trudeau and accruing his pension, his MPs are facing annihilation at the ballot box. Among those in a dogfight- Leah Gazan, Niki Ashton, and the rookie MP Leila Dance. Meanwhile, in west Winnipeg, CPC incumbent Marty Morantz is facing voters with investments in the import-export markets who think his leader needs to make the fight against US tariffs the daily plank of the national campaign - "It's an epic battle."While claims fly that the Tory campaign is disorganized, crowds in the thousands continue to show up at rallies showing their support for a change in Ottawa. The 'mushy middle' - voters who swing from left to right - are targeted by media campaigns that highlight a narrative that the election is not about domestic concerns like affordability, public safety and foreign influence in our media and elections. That leaves longstanding questions unansswered- like what happened with those Chinese spies at the downtown Winnipeg lab? Maybe Mark Carney can tell us.******** The Funding campaign for Season Six is now underway - the target is $10,000 with the first contributions already in. * We provide unmatched content in the public affairs realm in Winnipeg! * You can support this work by using the PayPal link and other information on our Donate Page- or you can email us via martygoldlive@gmail.com

Friend of the show Niki Ashton joins Nashwa and Ryan once again—this time to discuss work beyond Canadian Politics; specifically building international people power. This episode is a discussion about an organization that everyone should be excited about: Progressive International. In Canada and beyond, there has been a clear desire for many to build international solidarities that connect our struggles with others from around the world. Working people will always have more in common than they do with elites of their nations. Worldwide social and political injustice continues to thrive; without global solidarity we are often left alone in our national silos. With a growing fascist movement, we need organized left movements of international solidarity. This episode features clips of support and solidarity from others who are also striving for a better, more united world that is internationalist, anti-imperialist, and people-powered. The list of contributors includes: Noah Kulwin, David Adler, Alex V. Green, James Wilt, Liv Agar, Jeanine Khalik, Dwight Rhinosoros, Felix Biederman, Arif Hasan, and the Palestinian Youth Movement. We hope to “see” you at the event, Building Solidarity: A Conversation with Jeremy Corbyn & Niki Ashton. The event will be a conversation between Niki and Jeremy Corbyn about the state of progressive politics and how we can demand more. It is an event in support of Progressive International, a collaborative project founded in 2018 in Vermont by activists, leaders, and progressives like Jeremy Corbyn,Bernie Sanders, and Naomi Klein. We highly encourage people to sign up for the event. Internationalism is inherent to our politics and this show and we hope people attend and are inspired to build a larger and stronger more internationalist left wherever they are. To buy tickets to the event visit: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/building-solidarity-a-conversation-with-jeremy-corbyn-niki-ashton-tickets-143580403853Mutual Aid & Community Support:This week we wanted to re-highlight mutual aid and community support efforts happening in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Last Fall, Nashwa and Ryan sat down with Don Davies, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Kingsway. This episode features a pre-show chat about February 24, 2021's 2nd reading of Bill C-213, An Act to enact the Canada Pharmacare Act. Davies was the sponsor of the 2018 motion for Pharmacare. Despite that vote failing, there is a clear hunger in Canada to have pharmacare embedded into the fabric of our “public healthcare system.”  While there was hope for Bill C-213, sponsored by NDP MP Peter Julian, this bill also failed. Rumour has it the government is working on Pharmacare, but we are not hopeful it will be universal and public -- something Bill C-213 would have ensured. Nashwa and Ryan explore this further with Davies who has been passionate about the health of Canadians throughout his tenure as MP. They also discuss another neglected aspect of medicare: dental care, and the absurdity that our mouths are somehow divorced from the rest of our body's health. They move onto a discussion of socialism and Davies's opinion on the state of socialism in North America, including Biden's impact on progressive politics. Nashwa and Ryan's favourite topic -- international politics -- comes up, and we chat about Canada-US-China relations and the state of Canada's foreign policy in the context of the Bolivian election. Davies predicts that the Biden-Harris government will inevitably lead to more neoliberal foreign intervention, his prediction was sadly proven correct with recent airstrikes in Syria. Davies ends on a hopeful note, opening up about the opportunities available to us and a “renaissance of the left.” This episode reflects a bit on international victories for socialism and how the Canadian government's actions and complicity can often impact other parts of the world. This is why we would like to highlight that friend of the show Niki Ashton is holding a virtual event on behalf of Progressive International with Jeremy Corbyn. The event will be a conversation between Niki and Jeremy Corbyn about the state of progressive politics and how we can demand more. Eishia had a strong bright smile that could lighten a room, she had a contagious laugh, and she was loved by everybody. She was very athletic, loving hockey and basketball. She was very ambitious when it came to the court. She was very creative and artistic. Eishia loved to learn new things, take on projects, and worked hard to succeed. Eishia was a great aunty; she loved spending time with her nieces and nephew, and it made her smile just seeing the smile on their faces. The song is "Postcard from a Quarantined Miner in Flin Flon." Created just over 100 years after the Winnipeg General Strike and Spanish Flu Pandemic, the work draws parallels between today's crises and those of Manitoba's past, exploring the province's storied history as a site of labour unrest and how isolated rural communities have dealt with previous pandemics and epidemics. Incidentally, HudBay, Flin Flon's major employer, is now in the process of finalizing the closure of its mines, which will bring significant unemployment to the city. If you like the show and would like to see a specific politician interviewed please find us on social media and drop us a line! Guest Information:Guest of the week: Niki AshtonNiki was first elected as MP for Churchill–Keewatinook Aski in 2008 when she was 26, and lives in her hometown of Thompson. Deconstructing Dinner
The Future of Prison Farms II

Deconstructing Dinner

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 5, 2010 59:28

In July 2009, Deconstructing Dinner aired a one-hour feature on the now in-process closure of Canada's prison farm system. That episode came only months after it was discovered in February 2009 that Corrections Service Canada alongside Public Safety Canada had already planned the closure of the 150-year old program. With six farms having been operated in New Brunswick, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, the discovery of the news sparked an ongoing and active campaign of opposition seeking to halt the closures. On this part II of our coverage we listen to audio from the February 1, 2010 democratic dialogue hosted in Steinbach, Manitoba where Members of Parliament were invited to debate the prison farm closures. The event was strategically hosted in the political riding of the recently appointed Minister of Public Safety, Vic Toews. The episode also examines a rather feisty exchange within Canada's Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food. On November 17, 2009, Liberal Member of Parliament Wayne Easter tabled a motion requesting that the Committee explore the closure of the prison farm system. Voices Wayne Easter member of parliament, Malpeque, Liberal Party of Canada (North Wiltshire, PEI) - Wayne was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island and was raised on the family farm in North Wiltshire. Wayne entered politics in 1993 when he was officially elected as the Member of Parliament for the riding of Malpeque, P.E.I. He was re-elected in 1997, 2000, 2004, 2006 and 2008. In Parliament, Wayne has served as Solicitor General of Canada, Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries and Oceans, Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture and Agri-Food with special responsibilities for the Rural Secretariat, and is currently the Liberal Party's Opposition Critic on Agriculture and Agri-Food. Wayne was National President and CEO of the National Farmers Union for 11 years. James Bezan member of parliament, Selkirk-Interlake, Conservative Party of Canada (Teulon, MB) - In 2004, James was elected to the Canadian House of Commons as a Conservative MP. Bezan attended Olds College in Alberta where he majored in livestock technology and received a degree in Agricultural Production. Bezan worked in the livestock and cattle industries in the 1980s and 1990s, and started his own company in 1996. He served as Chief Executive Officer of the Manitoba Cattle Producer's Association and has sat on numerous boards in the fields of cattle and food production. He operates a farm near Teulon, Manitoba. Carol Hughes member of parliament, Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing, New Democratic Party of Canada (NDP) (Elliot Lake, ON) - Carol was elected to represent the electoral district of Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing in the 2008 Canadian federal election. Carol was formerly employed with Probation and Parole Services at Elliot Lake and Youth Justice Services in Sudbury. Pierre Lemieux member of parliament, Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, Conservative Party of Canada (Casselman, ON) - Pierre was elected to represent the riding of Glengarry-Prescott-Russell in 2006, narrowly defeating his Liberal opponent. Pierre is the Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture and Agri-Food. André Bellavance member of parliament, Richmond-Arthabaska, Bloc-Quebeçois (Victoriaville, QC) - André has representing the riding of Richmond-Arthabaska since 2004. André has served as the party's critic on Agriculture and Agri-Food since 2006 and has been a member of the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food since 2004. Andrew McCann spokesperson, Save Our Prison Farms Coalition (Kingston, ON) - Among his active role with the Save Our Prison Farms coalition, Andrew represents Urban Agriculture Kingston and has worked on many food security initiatives including the Sustainable Local Food Certificate offered at St. Lawrence College. John Hutton director, John Howard Society of Manitoba (Winnipeg, MB) - The John Howard Society works with men in conflict with the law, before, during and after incarceration. They also look at ways to repair harm and restore relationships damaged by crime. Mark Holland member of parliament, Ajax-Pickering, Liberal Party of Canada (Pickering, ON) - As one of the youngest members of the Liberal Caucas, Mark Holland was first elected in 2004 and has represented the riding of Ajax-Pickering ever since. As a Member of Parliament, Holland serves as the Liberal party's critic for Public Safety and National Security and is Vice Chair of the Public Safety and National Security Committee. Niki Ashton member of parliament, Churchill, New Democratic Party of Canada (NDP) (Thompson, MB) - Niki has represented the Churchill riding since 2008 and serves as the NDP's critic on Rural and Community Development.
