It's Thursday! Emma welcomes Noah Kulwin to discuss the ongoing protests against Israel. First, Emma runs through updates on the Trump Administration's designation of Mike Waltz as fall guy, Der Spiegel's expose on Trump's Cabinets' security issues, GOP infighting, Kristi Noam's fascist photo op, the disappearing of a Tufts student, Trump's frozen funding freeze, the Trump Administration's attack on public health, Trump's tariffs, Musk's political bribes, and Israel's ongoing slaughter in Gaza, before watching Hegseth (with Trump's “help”) try to clear his name in the Signal scandal. Noah Kulwin then joins, first touching on his experience taking part in the JVP protest at Trump Tower in New York over the Trump Administration's disappearing of Columbia student activist Mahmoud Khalil, before diving deeper into the clear and thorough connection between the US' support for fascism abroad and the descent into fascism at home, as we watch Israel resume its genocide on the Palestinian people while legal residents are picked up off the street by plain-clothes officers over pro-Palestinian speech – a Tufts student the most recent. Expanding on the global context for our current moment, Kulwin also touches on the particular role of the War on Terror in bolstering the rapid expansion of our surveillance state amid xenophobic, nationalist fervor. After expanding on the role of Jewish organizing in standing up to this fascist crackdown, Noah wraps up by emphasizing the need to Get Organized! what that means, and how to go about it at this moment. After briefly touching on the Mega Marcha, a demonstration against the Trump administration's immigration policies, being held in Dallas this Saturday – which our planned second guest, Domingo García, chairman of the political arm of the League of United Latin American Citizens, helped organize – they wrap up the free half by highlighting Kristi Noam's insane fascist photo-op outside of a migrant cell in El Salvador. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they watch Crowder and Co. breakdown over Mike Waltz giving the left an “easy own” by… accidentally leaking national security details to a journalist. They also talk with NotNick Fuentes from North Texas about the Atlantic's connection to the right, Henry from NC has a pitch for the minimum wage, and the MR Crew dives deep into the insane backlash to Rachel Zegler speaking up for Palestine at this moment, from Ben Shapiro to the nepo-baby son of a mega-producer. Al from Mass also calls in about organizing, and James Comer – get this – has a problem with NPR, plus, your calls and IMs! Brady Corbet's epic Academy Award-nominated film, The Brutalist, traces the career and personal life of fictional architect and Holocaust survivor László Toth, played by Adrien Brody, as he seeks to find his place in the United States after World War II. In this episode of On the Nose, contributing writer Rebecca Pierce, associate editor Mari Cohen, contributing editor Siddhartha Mahanta, and contributor Noah Kulwin unpack the film's symbolic use of Israel and Zionism as an apparent solution to the racialized antisemitism faced by its Jewish characters upon their arrival in the US. The conversation delves into the film's explorations of post-Holocaust Jewish life and American racialized white supremacy, as well as the contrast between its clear artistic vision and ambiguous politics. This episode includes spoilers for the film and discussions of its onscreen depictions of sexual violence. Thanks to Jesse Brenneman for producing and to Nathan Salsburg for the use of his song “VIII (All That Were Calculated Have Passed).”Texts Mentioned and Further Resources:“About the Destination: The Brutalist and Israel,” Noah Kulwin, Screen Slate“Adrien Brody Addresses Backlash Over Halle Berry Oscars Kiss—but Stops Short Of Apologizing,” Kelby Vera, Huffington Post“The Suppressed Lineage of American Jewish Dissent on Israel,” Emma Saltzberg, Jewish CurrentsThe Tribes of America by Paul Cowan

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with Noah Kulwin and Brendan James to discuss the most recent season of the Blowback podcast. Then, she speaks with Ross Barkan, contributing writer at New York Magazine and columnist at Crain's New York, to discuss his recent piece published in The Nation entitled "Is Eric Adams's Luck About to Run Out?" First, Emma runs through updates on Israel's attacks on civilians in Lebanon, the UN General Assembly's overwhelming vote to end Israel's military presence in Gaza and the West Bank, reporting on Biden's weapons transfers, the uncommitted movement, the teamsters' lack of a presidential endorsement, swing state polling, New York State's Democratic Party problem, the Fed, Russian offensives in Ukraine, Beshear's conversion therapy ban, and dropping overdose rates in the US, before parsing a little more thoroughly through the developing story of Israel's en-masse attack of Lebanese citizens (Hezbollah or not) via the use of rigged communications technologies. Emma is then joined by Noah Kulwin and Brendan James as they outline why they chose Cambodia for the focus of the fifth season of Blowback, unpacking its role as a central (and emblematic) node in the constellation of US intervention in Southeast Asia during the Cold War. Expanding on this, Kulwin and James dive into the complex cast of characters that dominate this season, first tackling the Nixon-Kissinger paring that set the blueprint for the entire thing, first sabotaging Vietnam peace negotiations in 1968 to help ensure a GOP victory, before centering a strategy of “Peace with Honor,” by which Nixon meant a shift to more expansive bombing campaigns, and immediately expanding said campaign by pushing Cambodian Royal Norodom Sihanouk to embrace a US carpet bombing campaign on his country (not war, totally not war), all while hiding the entire campaign behind a dual reporting system, separate books, and direct, behind-the-scenes communications between the White House and relevant parties. Shifting focus to Cambodia, Noah and Brendan parse through the Khmer Rouge's origins as an auxiliary, socialist-aligned force with the North Vietnamese (the basis for Nixon's carpet bombing), only to help launch a full-scale Civil War in the wake of the US-backed deposition of Sihanouk by South Vietnam in 1970, resulting in years of bloodshed (increased by ongoing US bombings) that saw the Khmer Rouge gain more and more territory and power, until the formerly-small-guerilla movement successfully sacked the capital city of Phnom Penh, launching five years of forced labor, full-scale genocide and the extermination of ethnic minorities, refugee crises, mass executions and more under the rule of Pol Pot. Continuing, James and Kulwin move into the breakdown of Cambodian society under the brutal regime of Pol Pot and expanding conflict as the Khmer Rouge turned against the North Vietnamese government that had supported them (in part due to the Khmer Rouge's budding relationship with the US and the West), resulting in said government launching a full-scale invasion of Cambodia, getting rid of Pol Pot and establishing a friendly regime, all to the condemnation of the West that had been peacefully watching Cambodians die for nearly a decade. After briefly expanding on the mythology tying the Khmer Rouge's rule to the greater Soviet movement and the obvious failures of said narrative when you look into who was actually supporting the regime, Emma, Brendan and Noah jump to the modern period, unpacking the symbiotic nature of a fully-capitalist Cold War between the US and China, and what that has meant for Cambodian development over the last decade, wrapping up the interview by running through the final figures on the mass deaths from US carpet bombing (100-150k), the US-backed Civil War (300-500k), and the following Cambodian Genocide (1.7m). Ross Barkan and Emma then dive right into the overwhelming cloud of corruption around NYC Mayor Eric Adams, including FOUR federal investigations ranging from domestic to foreign corruption, and the correlating complete incompetence of his governance, with Barkan comparing his administration to a Tammany Hall that didn't actually deliver anything to the people. After briefly expanding on the role an overwhelmingly unpopular New York Democratic Party is having on races up and down the ballot, Ross and Emma tackle the particulars of Adams' corrupt relationship with the NYPD and its deadly impact. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they unpack North Carolina GOP Gubernatorial Nominee Mark Robinson's odd sermon on the ability to take and make life with one's genitalia, JD Vance's continuing commitment to racist conspiracy, and Ryan Grim's cathartic shutdown of Matt Walsh's absurd anti-Haitian bigotry. It's Casual Friday! Emma is joined by Noah Kulwin, co-host of the Blowback podcast, to round up a chaotic week in news. First, Emma runs through updates on Israel's impossible order to Gazans, rising death numbers, and continuing war crimes, as well as the US reneging on Iran, Bob Menendez's corruption, labor action, climate change, and more, before parsing through the explicitly genocidal rhetoric coming from the top of Israeli and US politics. Noah Kulwin then parses through Israel's ongoing siege of Gaza, including an impossible evacuation order, the complete lack of symmetry in the Israel-Palestine relationship, and the total control of Israel's apartheid system. After touching on Israel's knowledge of an impending attack, Noah and Emma discuss the severe (and unsurprising) failure of Israel's attempt to beat Palestine into submission, before wrapping up with the dramatic double standards for pro-Palestine and pro-Israel stances in the media. Emma concludes the free half with a quick update on the rise and fall of the theoretical nomination of Steve Scalise to House Speakership, and the increasing bad blood within the GOP. And in the Fun Half: Emma watches British journalist Owen Jones attempt to fend off a British MP's relentless apartheid apologia, looks back on Noam Chomsky's statements on the asymmetry of Israel-Palestine relations, and talks with Ulysses from Cincinnati about a new outsider candidate in the 2024 election. On this week's episode of Lever Time, David Sirota is joined by Brendan James and Noah Kulwin, producers and hosts of the wildly popular historical narrative podcast Blowback. Their new season covers the history of foreign intervention in Afghanistan and both the intentional and unintentional blowback from those efforts. “Blowback” refers to an old CIA term meaning, “the unforeseen and unwanted effects, or repercussions to one's actions.” In Blowback, Brendan and Noah report on the history of America's foreign policy and interventions — including its efforts related to the various wars in Iraq, the Cuban Revolution, and the Korean War. David speaks with Brendan and Noah about their new season, which goes into painstaking detail about Afghanistan, a country that has arguably suffered more modern foreign interventions than any other place on Earth. They cover Soviet interventions in the country in the 1970s and '80s, the U.S.-backed rise of the Mujahideen, the September 11 World Trade Center attacks, and the subsequent U.S. invasion and war, which lasted over two decades. A transcript of this episode is available here.Links:BlowbackBONUS: On this past Monday's bonus episode of Lever Time Premium, exclusively for The Lever's supporting subscribers, we shared our interview with attorney Jeffrey Simon, who is part of the legal team suing 17 fossil fuel companies for their contribution to a 2021 heatwave that killed 69 people in Oregon's Multnomah County. If you'd like access to Lever Time Premium, which includes extended interviews and bonus content, head over to LeverNews.com to become a supporting subscriber. If you'd like to leave a tip for The Lever, click the following link. It's another EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Noah Kulwin and Brendan James to discuss the most recent season of the Blowback podcast. Then, she's joined by freelance writer Garrison Lovely to discuss his recent piece in The Nation entitled "Confessions of a McKinsey Whistleblower." Emma starts off by reacting to remarks UAW President Shawn Fain made on CNBC, in response to a question about UAW withholding their endorsement of President Biden. Then, she's joined by Noah and Brendan to discuss Season 4 of Blowback, and Emma's devastation that a postscript from the movie "Rambo" did not, in fact, hand it to the mujahideen in Afghanistan, despite the movie being a love letter of sorts to them regardless. Noah dives into some of the history of the mujahideen, and how the U.S. began involvement with them and supporting them as a Cold War battleground state in the conflict against Russia. Brendan breaks down the antecedents to the Iraq and Afghanistan war, and how all of the elements of U.S. involvement in Afghanistan from the 1970's-1990's, especially their support and eventual rejection of the mujahideen, lead directly into the 20+ year conflict that defined the 21s century. Then Emma is joined by Garrison, who discusses his early employment as an intern, and then full-time staffer at McKinsey Consulting, and how it shaped his views on America capitalism. Garrison explains his work involving the carceral state, and how McKinsey tried to make its mark on American prisons, and also dives into some of the absolutely unbelievable corporate-speak that McKinsey has introduced into the lexicon, like "right-sizing", and how those signifiers mask and obscure some of the more insidious characteristics of the work being done at the firm.  And in the Fun Half, Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton and check in on some of the Senate Republicans, like Josh Hawley, who are getting a little antsy about Mitch McConnell's leadership as Minority Leader after his most recent freeze-up. They then dive into Mehdi Hasan's masterful skewering of Vivek Ramaswamy, who was constitutionally incapable of answering why Trump was the best President of his life time, but also a sore loser who committed abhorrent acts on January 6th. They then get into the REAL, hard-hitting news of the day: Tucker Carlson's bombshell interview with convicted felon and serial fabulist Larry Sinclair, who outlined the (most likely fictional) night where he had (alleged) sex with Barack Obama and smoked crack with him (it was actually cocaine, we think.) They top it off by hearing Tim Pool's thoughts on the matter (would it shock you that he compared it to Christine Blasey Ford's testimony against Justice Kavanaugh)? Plus, your calls & IM's! Emma hosts Noah Kulwin, co-host of the Blowback podcast, to discuss his recent piece in The Baffler entitled "Tales from the Thrifts." First, Emma dives into Biden's recent executive moves, from codifying DACA to the 10-20k student debt cancellation, and explores the absolutely wild takes from the right on the minimal debt relief. Then, Noah Kulwin joins to discuss the parallel his article painted between the Savings and Loans (SnL) crisis of the 80s and the Crypto crashes of today, jumping back to the 1970s when the deregulation of the SnL industry began amidst inflation, continuing to open it up its investment opportunities and bail it out repeatedly (under both Carter and Reagan), with 1982's Garn Saint-Germain Act opening the industry up to federally guaranteed money laundering schemes, and the government legislation climaxing with the passage of FIRREA in 1989. Unsurprisingly, Kulwin then walks through the massive influence the SnL sector had in Washington, as the biggest Congressional donors, acting as real estate developers and mortgage lenders at the same time, before they shift to the similarly unregulated market of Crypto, acting effectively as bonds for surplus capital in much the same was, despite their advertisement as a currency, diving into the similar tactics we see between the two sectors, particularly when it comes to broadcasting themself onto the mainstream and bolstering certain illegal and profitable industries. Wrapping up, Emma and Noah walk through the recent collapse of the tied crypto coins Luna and Terra and why Ponzi schemes will never succeed, and the future of the Blowback podcast. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton as they explore student debt bondage as a funnel into the worlds of privatized industry, meaning our smartest students have spent the ‘90s and ‘00s working on derivatives and crashing the stock market, and the 2010s on electronic surveillance and crypto. Sophia from Atlanta discusses her mom's attraction to Andrew Yang's “Forwards Party,” Dr. Oz responds to claims that everyone hates him, and the crew dives into an openly racist Juneteenth parody party that took place in Rochester NY, and the lawsuit that has since followed. Sam and Emma host Daniel Levy, president of the US Middle East Project, and Noah Kulwin, co-creator of the Blowback podcast, to explore two of the US’ messiest and most destructive long-term foreign policy relationships in Israel and Cuba, respectively. Daniel joins to discuss the attacks in Gaza, how commitment to Israeli impunity has undermined a future of a feasible Israeli state, and how raising consciousness around white supremacy has helped discourse in the US to begin to shift, even as the Biden administration gives the green light to continued Israeli violence. Sam and Emma delve into the roles of Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib in changing tides in Congress, then, Noah Kulwin unpacks the myths of the conventional narrative around the Cuban revolution and Cuba's relationship with the US. He explores how the 1959 revolution acted as a second war of independence, separating them from the neocolonial systems of the US, and the devastating effects of the proceeding embargo and total isolation forced on Cuba by the US, particularly after the fall of the USSR. And in the Fun Half: Brian from Kansas explores the serious racism in Israel, even within its own borders, MTG yells into the void about… AOC and diapers? Ronald Raygun joins to talk about growing consciousness around the Israel occupation of Palestine, and Matt Walsh engages in the erasure of his peers and claims that white supremacy does not exist. Next, a Proud Boys leader finally sees the injustice of Donald Trump in all the wrong ways, and Ben from NY calls in to get Sam and Emma’s perspectives on the NYHS curriculum. Friend of the show Niki Ashton joins Nashwa and Ryan once again—this time to discuss work beyond Canadian Politics; specifically building international people power. This episode is a discussion about an organization that everyone should be excited about: Progressive International. In Canada and beyond, there has been a clear desire for many to build international solidarities that connect our struggles with others from around the world. Working people will always have more in common than they do with elites of their nations. Worldwide social and political injustice continues to thrive; without global solidarity we are often left alone in our national silos. With a growing fascist movement, we need organized left movements of international solidarity. This episode features clips of support and solidarity from others who are also striving for a better, more united world that is internationalist, anti-imperialist, and people-powered. The list of contributors includes: Noah Kulwin, David Adler, Alex V. Green, James Wilt, Liv Agar, Jeanine Khalik, Dwight Rhinosoros, Felix Biederman, Arif Hasan, and the Palestinian Youth Movement. We hope to “see” you at the event, Building Solidarity: A Conversation with Jeremy Corbyn & Niki Ashton. The event will be a conversation between Niki and Jeremy Corbyn about the state of progressive politics and how we can demand more. It is an event in support of Progressive International, a collaborative project founded in 2018 in Vermont by activists, leaders, and progressives like Jeremy Corbyn,Bernie Sanders, and Naomi Klein. We highly encourage people to sign up for the event. Internationalism is inherent to our politics and this show and we hope people attend and are inspired to build a larger and stronger more internationalist left wherever they are. To buy tickets to the event visit: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/building-solidarity-a-conversation-with-jeremy-corbyn-niki-ashton-tickets-143580403853Mutual Aid & Community Support:This week we wanted to re-highlight mutual aid and community support efforts happening in Winnipeg, Manitoba. On April 8th, 2020 Eishia Hudson, an Indigenous teen, was murdered by a Winnipeg police officer. Her family has a gofundme to support legal costs. On a previous episode, we sat down with Winnipeg Police Cause Harm to talk about the WPS. For years police have harmed the people of Winnipeg and this group is in solidarity with all peoples and communities that are harmed by the WPS. They call for the defunding and abolition of the WPS and the reallocation of funds to sustainable community led initiatives. We encourage people to check out their blog.Additional Resources: Progressive International presently features three pillars: Blueprint, Movement, and Wire. Below you can learn more about them and what supporting Progressive International helps build. Progressive International: BlueprintProgressive international convenes activists, thinkers, and practitioners to help design a policy blueprint to transform institutions that impact our lives, our communities, and the planet. Progressive International: Movement Progressive International works to connect and build solidarity between activists globally. In this week’s episode, we cover whether Warren Buffet’s most recent $9.7B investment in Dominion Energy means the bottom for oil & gas. (1:00)We discuss how Kanye’s presidential announcement for 2020 still matters for the stock market regardless of what paperwork he has yet to submit. (5:00)How COVID has renewed the idea of offshore talent and what that means for millennials. (17:30)Lastly, we talk about antitrust, privacy, and possible business opportunities created with the new features in iOS 14. (21:45) Listen on Apple, Spotify, or Google Podcasts. If you aren’t in the Reformed Millennials Facebook Group join us for daily updates, discussions, and deep dives into the investable trends Millennials should be paying attention to.👉 For specific investment questions or advice contact Gold Investment Management.* scroll to the end for a summary of predictions and a podcast recommendation. 💰 Berkshire Hathaway buys Dominion gas assets in a $9.7B deal. Dominion Energy has scrapped a large pipeline project and sold its natural gas transmission business to Berkshire Hathaway, marking a big shift towards cleaner energy for the US utility — and another bet on fossil fuels by Warren Buffett. The deal for Dominion’s gas assets gives Berkshire Hathaway Energy, a unit of Mr Buffett’s parent company that already runs a $100bn energy portfolio, ownership of almost 8,000 miles of natural gas transmission lines, and transport capacity of almost 21bn cubic feet a day.The transaction also includes considerable storage facilities and partial ownership of the Cove Point LNG terminal, one of only six LNG export facilities in the country, which Berkshire Hathaway Energy will operate. Link🇺🇸 How Kanye’s bid for president could matter to the stock market. A controversial opinion is that Kanye could steal votes from Biden in important swing states and give Trump a fighting chance at re-election.If that doesn’t happen and Joe Biden becomes President his planned tax reform would reverse a lot of Trump’s cuts and likely be reflected in public markets. “I’m going to get rid of the bulk of Trump’s $2 trillion tax cut,” Biden said, “and a lot of you may not like that but I’m going to close loopholes like capital gains and stepped up basis.”The Tax Policy Center calculated that almost 93% of the tax increases would be borne by the top 20% of households. The top 1% — those who make more than $837,000 — would see their tax burden jump by nearly $300,000, a roughly 17% reduction in after-tax income. Link Biden also said he would raise the corporate tax rate to 28%, which he said would raise an estimated $1.3 trillion over the next decade. The Trump tax cuts had shrunk corporate taxes to 21% from 35%. Link🚕 Uber to shift more engineering jobs to India. Needless to say, Coronavirus has disrupted a lot of businesses that are now looking to cut costs and pivot to more profitable areas including some of the biggest technology companies on earth. For example, yesterday Uber confirmed that they are buying Postmates for $2.6B in a move to expand their food delivery footprint. This makes sense if you look at their last quarterly earnings results, the Uber Eats business grew 52% and managed to somewhat offset a big decline in its ride-hailing revenues.Uber isn’t stopping there, when Dara Khosrowshahi became CEO of Uber three years ago he agreed to a compensation package largely tied to the performance of the company. While he did leave $180m in Expedia options on the table he would be awarded 1.75m Uber shares should the company hit $120B valuation. Knowing that it’s no wonder he’s already managed to move 600 jobs or 15% of their engineering team to India. Between this offshoring trend and Trump suspending H1-B visas until December, this is great news for Canada. 🍎 What you need to know about iOS 14.Apple has addressed some serious privacy concerns with its next update: You no longer have to give apps your exact location. You get to pick which photos an app has access to.You’ll know when your microphone or camera is in use. This update is also significant because they are opening up their products in five new ways. They’re adding Safari WebExtensions API on macOSYou will be able to set default email and browser on iPhone and iPadNew enhanced controller supportNearby Interaction framework for U1 chipFind My network accessory programOther Top Features: Widgets; App Library; App Clips; Pinned conversations in Messages; Translate app; Picture-in-picture video; Bike and electric vehicle routes in Maps. The developer beta is out already but you have to be a registered developer with Apple which costs $99/yr. 🔮 Predictions: Apple skirts antitrust allegations and avoids being broken up.Kanye makes a serious run for president in 2024.Advertisers will all come crawling back to Facebook. ❤️ Recommendation: If you’re headed on a road trip this summer check out the podcast series Blowback. From their website: “Blowback is a 10-part podcast investigation into the war, the decades of policies that led us to destroy Saddam Hussein's government, and the aftermath of the American invasion. Co-hosts Brendan James and Noah Kulwin examine the ways in which the American government interfered in Iraqi politics long before we ever put boots on the ground, and why America turned on Saddam Hussein, the U.S. government's former favorite strongman in the Middle East.”p.s. If you were forwarded this newsletter, click the button below to subscribe!p.p.s. This week’s riddle: I'm obsessed with attention, a hit reality show is a dream. I'll spend whatever it takes, refusing to fail, this race is a red queen. You don't know it yet but I'm raising my prices, someone has to pay for it. You know… the 180 million times Cramer will say...
