Where do your beliefs about yourself and your worth come from? (And how do we change them!?)We're finishing up our discussion about Erika L Sánchez's transformative memoir this week. My friend Diliana is back with more incredibly thoughtful moments and a few confessions about trying to adhere to early aughts beauty standards. We chat about what we allow ourselves to enjoy and what we feel guilty about indulging in and how Erika's memoir allowed us to reflect on who we have been and who we want to be.Listener discretion advised: this episode contains adult languageIf you have any comments or questions, please connect with me on Instagram or email babesinbooklandpodcast@gmail.com. How do you thrive instead of just survive? In her thought-provoking and vulnerable memoir, Erika L. Sánchez bares all.

Today's episode features a Q&A with our own Graham Page. Graham leads the Media Analytics business Unit as Global Managing Director of Media Analytics at Affectiva, a Smart Eye company. He pioneered the integration of biometric and behavioral measures to mainstream brand and advertising research for 26 years as Executive VP and Head of Global Research Solutions at Kantar.Over the course of the last year or so, there has been a thread of debate in the media regarding the validity and ethics of facial emotion recognition. This has often reflected the point of view of some data privacy groups who are concerned about the use of facial technologies across several use cases, or the opinions of commercial interests who offer alternative biometric technologies, or traditional research methodologies.Scrutiny of emerging technologies is vital, and the concerns raised are important points for debate. Affectiva has led the development of the Emotion AI field for over a decade, and the use of automated facial expression analysis in particular. For our series finale episode, we are excited to have New York Times best-selling author Erika L. Sánchez join us to talk about what inspires her work, what's next for her, and how we can ignite students to become passionate readers and writers. Erika L. Sánchez is a Mexican American poet, novelist, and essayist. Her debut poetry collection, Lessons on Expulsion, was a finalist for the PEN Open Book Award. Her debut young adult novel, I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, was a New York Times bestseller and a National Book Award finalist. It's now being made into a film directed by America Ferrera. She is also the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Chair at DePaul University in Chicago. Her newest release and first adult book Crying in The Bathroom is a memoir that traces her life in deeply moving, wildly hilarious prose—from her misfit childhood growing up as the daughter of Mexican immigrants in '90s Chicago, to struggles with her body and mental illness, to her rise to literary fame.

Accusations of antisemitism and Islamophobia tend to spark and exacerbate divisions in our world. Amanda and Holly discuss two recent controversies that featured accusations of religious bias: The removal of Rep. Ilhan Omar from a congressional committee and a depiction of the Prophet Muhammad shown in an art history class. They look at the under-discussed parts of these controversies, implications for the future, and how we balance the right to religious belief and expression with respect for others' beliefs. SHOW NOTES Segment 1 (starting at 00:55): A vote to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar from a congressional committee Holly and Amanda discussed this article by Karoun Demirjian in The New York Times: House Ousts Ilhan Omar From Foreign Affairs Panel as G.O.P. Exacts Revenge Amanda read a statement from former Rep. John Yarmuth via Twitter. Segment 2 (starting at 11:39): A professor, ancient art and campus controversy Amanda and Holly discussed this in-depth article by Vimal Patel in The New York Times on the controversy at Hamline University: A Lecturer Showed a Painting of the Prophet Muhammad. She Lost Her Job. For more on blasphemy laws and BJC's work against them: BJC and others speak out against blasphemy laws, covering a congressional briefing in 2018 U.S. House Supports International Religious Freedom Resolution by the Rev. Jennifer Hawks, associate general counsel at BJC Article 18 of the U.N. Declaration of Human Rights Read the lawsuit filed by professor Erika López Prater, Ph.D., at this link. Holly and Amanda mentioned this article by Yonat Shimron in Religion News Service: Hamline University retracts ‘Islamophobia' charge as instructor sues Segment 3 (starting at 31:12): What have we learned from these controversies? Holly mentioned a program called “Protecting Academic Freedom, Empowering Muslim Students After the Hamline Controversy,” led by Rutgers Law Professor Sahar Aziz for the Rutgers Center for Security, Race, and Rights. It is available to watch on YouTube. Amanda mentioned this open letter from Muslims for Progressive Values. Respecting Religion is made possible by BJC's generous donors. You can support these conversations with a gift to BJC.
Adjunct professor Erika López Prater showed two pious, Muslim-drawn images of Muhammad in an art history class in October at Hamline University in Minnesota. When a student complained of "Islamophobia," the university responded by firing López Prater. That in turn sparked a national controversy in which almost everyone criticized Hamline. Have accusations of “Islamophobia” lost currency? Could this be a turning point for Middle East Studies?
Referendum, ktoré iniciovali opozičné strany na čele so Smerom-SD síce nebolo úspešné, no podľa politológa Erika Láštica výsledok ukazuje, aké majú opozičné strany silne jadro voličov. No otvára to dvere aj novým projektom. Podcast pripravili Denisa Hopková a Denisa Žilová.

Hamline University dismissed art history instructor Dr. Erika López Prater for showing her students a 14th-century painting of the prophet Mohammed, an act administrators branded "Islamophobic." According to Hamline's president, Fayneese S. Miller, respect for observant Muslim students "should have superseded academic freedom." Facing national criticism, the University eventually reversed its position. But valid questions linger: should academics self-censor to avoid offending students (or losing their jobs)? Is "Islamophobia" even a valid concept? Join Onkar Ghate and Aaron Smith for a discussion of the issues surrounding the Hamline controversy.

Poslanci OĽaNO pred hlasovaním odišli zo sály a Igor Matovič podvečer prišiel doručiť do prezidentskej kancelárie demisiu, no napokon si to rozmyslel a podpísaný dokument mal podľa prezidentského úradu vytrhnúť vedúcemu kancelárie z rúk. Čo očakávať ďalej? Aké kompetencie získa prezidentka? Čo pád vlády vyvoláva v samotnom hnutí Oľano? A čo SaS?

André: Boka in kontakter med gamla vänner exempelvis via sms telefon etc. Ha ett regelbundet andaktsliv.Dagens avsnitt sponsras av Strukturkalendern (strukturkalendern.se). Bookworms, do you ever think to yourself, “I'm so glad I get to be alive at the same time as this magical person?” That was my exact thought after I talked with Adrian Cepeda, owner of the Golden Lab Bookshop in Queens, New York. His infectious love of books and commitment to celebrating diversity and inclusivity in literature is a joy to behold. Adrian uplifts voices that aren't always at the forefront of popular literature, so readers can connect with stories they can relate to. In today's episode, Adrian and I grappled with how we can continue to appreciate classic literature, even if social norms have changed, and how Gabriel García Márquez didn't invent magical realism, but perfected it. Finally, Adrian nearly gave me a heart attack when he showed me the horror book he's currently reading. Man of Steel Star, Christina Wren aka Carrie Farris in the franchise, Talks About Role as J.P. Cutler on L.A. Macabre streaming Seasons One and Two on Amazon Prime Video. Give Christina Wren and I about 20 minutes and we'll figure out how we are related, which is the most common joke Middle Eastern people tell each other, especially since we are both half-Lebanese. Official Synopsis: Featuring Twin Peaks’ Robert Broski and Batman v.Superman’s Christina Wren, all 15 episodes of the instant cult classic are now available to stream today. L.A Macabre fixes on three filmmakers that interview a former member of the defunct cult "The New Family" leading them down a path of mystery, kidnapping, and murder. Ryan Hellquist, Corsica Wilson, Aidan Bristow, Ryan Bartley, Christina Wren, Joel Bryant, Erika L. Homes, and Brandy Redd headline a gifted ensemble. Dan Ast wrote and directed the episodes. Ast produces via his Half Ast Productions alongside David Schatanoff, Jr. for D Studios Productions. Ryan Hellquist, who plays Ryan Hollbrook in the series, ensures audiences will be on the edge of their seat. “L.A. Macabre is such a thrill ride with a variety of growing suspense, creeping suspicions, twists, and turns, all-out jump scares and terrifying WTF! realizations, then at times it teases you with just enough horrifying mystery to send the darkest parts of your imagination into a frenzy.” Wren and I spoke just before the Christmas break and although most of you people will be saying, "Hey, R.C., Christmas was December 25, why the delay?" My answer is, I'm Orthodox, so January 7 when we celebrate it on the Julian Calendar, so there! L.A. Macabre streaming Seasons One and Two on Amazon Prime Video. Follow L.A. Poet, novelist and essayist Erika L. Sánchez may have been a National Book Award Finalist, a 2017-2019 Princeton Arts Fellow, a 2019 NEA Literature Fellow and currently the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Chair in the Latin American and Latino Studies Department at DePaul University, but she takes nothing for granted. Growing up in Chicago the child of Mexican immigrant factory workers, she understood early on that not everyone was able to realize their lives' goals. Erika, often feeling like the odd kid out, found new worlds through books and herself through writing. And she was determined to make a place for herself in that world. After a long period of struggle, in 2017 Erika L. Sánchez had the year writers dream of: her debut collection of poetry Lessons on Expulsion was published to glowing reviews as was her YA novel I'm Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter which became a finalist for the National Book Award. In this podcast, Erika talks about her traditional upbringing, her rebellion and her longing to see herself represented in literature (I'm Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter was the book she wanted to read when she was 15) and the joy she finds in her first love—poetry.

BLACK LIVES MATTER. Find out how you can help here and here. In this episode we review I'm Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter. ----Trigger Warning- The book we are reviewing this week mentions death, self-harm, suicide, sexual encounters, and rape. Spoiler Alert - In reviewing this book there might be spoilers. You have been warned. A brief summary: Julia is 15, she wants to be a writer, she prefers dark clothing, and reading by herself at family gathering. Julia is smart and wants more out of life and is not afraid to question authority much to the distress of her immigrant parents. Life has not been easy for Julia but at least she had her older sister, the perfect Mexican daughter (and buffer) Olga…that’s until she dead. Now with Olga gone and Julia left to not only deal with her own grief but her parents as well. She slowly pieces together that perhaps she never really knew her sister…maybe she wasn’t perfect. We hope you have your library card ready because the Unicorns are doing a book review this week!! I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, a young adult novel written by Erika L. Sánchez was suggested to us by a listener (thanks Diana). For more information about the author feel free to watch an interview with Erika L. Sánchez linked down below. In this episode we share the importance of reading lecture by POC and the effect that has on our “empathy muscles”. After giving a brief summary (trying not to give away too many spoilers) we crack into our initial thoughts, highlights, themes, characterizations, and are challenges. A few of the theme we discuss are: Greif “Coming of age” Family loyalty Family trauma Mother/Daughter relationship (what makes a “good” Mexican daughter vs. a “bad” Mexican daughter) Mental Health As we close our first book review, we also examine the relationship between Julia and the white characters in the story. If you’ve read this book please let us know your thoughts, we’d love to hear them!! Our contact information is down below. We close with our lovely happy places hint it’s spooky AND refreshing. ABOUT STEPS to End Family Violence SURVIVORS & THEIR FAMILIES / NYCFrom Healing to Promoting Healthy Relationships Our STEPS To End Family Violence cadre of programs is committed to both healing and prevention. We work with survivors and their families to overcome histories of abuse to find positive paths forward. Meanwhile, we work with youth, schools, courts, legislators, and the community at large to advocate for a greater understanding of healthy relationships and how intimate partner violence can lead to any number of subsequent challenges. We are explicitly committed to naming the survivorship of people whose experiences have historically been ignored. STEPS was founded by the legendary Sister Mary Nerney in 1986 after she convened a gathering of women incarcerated at the Bedford Hills Women’s Correctional Facility who testified to their histories of battering and its relationship to their criminal charges. This historic event created a call to action to create what started as a two-person court advocacy project. In the decades since, STEPS has evolved into a holistic program of services for survivors of intimate partner and other forms of gender-based violence with wide-reaching focuses on healing, prevention, intervention, and policy advocacy. https://www.risingground.org/program/steps/ ABOUT Maisie Breit Maisie Breit is a Training and Curriculum Specialist for the Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence (ENDGBV) where she develops and implements training and curricula on Intimate Partner Violence, Sexual Violence, Trauma-Responsive Practices, Systems of Oppression, and more. Prezident Andrej Kiska navrhuje zmeniť slovenský volebný systém. Podľa neho by mal mať každý okres svojho poslanca.

Amy suggests Bus 57 by Dashka Slater. Cash Money suggests Boyz N The Hood. Lindsey suggests The Godfather Part 2.
Hannah Cohen is a poet and editor based in Virginia. I recently picked up a copy of Hannah's new chapbook Bad Anatomy and the way that the poems encompass both vulnerability and strength really struck me, as did the self-deprecating perspective. In our conversation, Hannah and I talked about Bad Anatomy, about emotional truth in poetry, as well as her work as co-editor of the online poetry magazine Cotton Xenomorph. Then in the second segment we discussed the challenges of working as an artist with a day job, especially a day job that isn't in academia. (Conversation recorded May 15, 2018.) This week, we talk with Erika L Sánchez about her National Book Award nominated YA novel 'I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter.' The book follows the story of Julia Reyes, a 15-year-old Mexican American girl growing up in Chicago. The novel begins with the death of her sister and as the story unfolds she soon learns that her sister isn't as perfect as everyone imagined. "But it's funny!" Sánchez clarifies. And as always, we close the show with recommendations. Erika recommends Don't Call Us Dead by Danez Smith. (You can listen to MashReads' podcast discussion of Don't Call Us Dead here.) Peter recommends the Comedy Central show Nathan 4 You, especially the show's fourth season finale, where Nathan tries to take a 78-year-old Bill Gates on a trip to find the woman he loves. "It's just exceptionally good. It reaches an emotional level that the show never has before while also being as goofy and as silly as the show always is. Just an incredible thing." Aliza recommends Avatar: The Last Airbender. "Everybody needs to watch Avatar: The Last Airbender. It's the greatest show ever made. Everybody should watch Avatar: The Last Airbender." MJ recommends reading "Fiona the hippo's best moments of 2017," a look at the glow up year that Fiona the Hippo has had. "Turns out the the United States is living in a monarchy. We have a queen and her name is Fiona the Hippo. [This post] is what I need to feel light and goodness in the world. I promise, reading this post will make you feel happy."
Rachel Zucker speaks with Erika Sánchez about her first book of poems, her first YA novel (currently shortlisted for the National Book Award), her experience as a sex advice columnist, how her manuscript became a book, writing unlikeable characters, shame, obsessions, sex, making things up in poems and prose, authenticity, feminism, Buddhism, and DACA.
Erka L. Sánchez stops by the show around the release of not one, but two new books–her poetry collection Lessons on Expulsion and her Young Adult novel I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter. She talks finding her rituals, teenage Erika, and more.
Poet Erika L. Sánchez discusses how her background and politics shape her writing. She reads her poem, "A woman runs on the first day of spring," originally published in ESPN.
We are pleased to welcome Erika L. Andersen who is jumping in at the last moment to lead our discussion and get her questions answered! Today's speaker, Tim C. Johnson, had a medical emergency & will be rescheduled. Lawyers have to specialize in order to survive, and I'm a generalist, I like to do it all. When I was a lawyer, I was involved in a case that required someone who understood markets, technology, accounting and could translate details between various people. I had to figure out the technology, which I did talking to Product Managers and then translate it for the lawyers, accountants, economists and others involved in the $1 billion case. That was the perfect entry into looking at Product Management as a perfect fit for my skill set. @ErikaLAndersen http://www.linkedin.com/in/erikaandersen questions: http://bit.ly/pw6uFB
