Over the next few months, I'll be mixing in some of our earlier Motherhood Meets Medicine interviews with new episodes. These ‘best of' episodes are the most shared and listened to episodes of all time! Here is today's featured episode with Dr. Daryl Johnson, listen as she discusses keeping the spark alive after kids. Over the past two and a half years, we've been living in a pandemic. This has impacted our children in so many ways, particularly the state of their mental health. As we continue to see a rise in mental health concerns with children, we have to collectively pay attention to this crisis, and determine how we can offer support. When a child's mental health is impacted in a way that is harmful to themselves or those around them, it can be challenging to alter that behavior or even discuss it. Dr. Hoet is on the podcast today to discuss how we can help our child who has a mental health disorder, or strong emotions, and how we can work through them. Ariana Hoet, PhD, is the clinical director of On Our Sleeves and a pediatric psychologist at Nationwide Children's Hospital. Dr. Hoet is deeply passionate about making sure everyone has a fair opportunity to be as healthy as possible and that people of all backgrounds are accepted and celebrated. Her personal experience as an immigrant from Maracaibo, Venezuela, has helped to fuel that passion. Becoming a psychologist and working in the health field only increased her understanding of the importance of working toward inclusion and equity in our society. She hopes to further the mission of On Our Sleeves by providing inclusive resources helpful to all adults caring for children. In today's episode we also discuss how we can help a child who is feeling thoughts of suicide or other harmful emotions, and the best ways to go about being there for them. In this episode we discuss: The pandemic being a chronic stressor. Why Dr. Hoet started On Our Sleeves. How to validate a child's heavy emotions. Details of "Operation Conversation". Reviewing warning signs if our child is feeling suicidal. That enthusiasm extends into her desire for making sure that people of all backgrounds are accepted and celebrated – a passion born from her own experience as an immigrant to the U.S. from Venezuela. In panel discussions before central Ohio business executives at Nationwide Children's, and with hundreds of college students at Otterbein University, Dr. Hoet and Dr. Murthy spoke passionately about addressing often-misunderstood mental health challenges. Show Notes:Dr. Miguel Franco 904-376-3800 Miguel.Franco@bmcjax.com Mick Franco, PhD, a bilingual licensed psychologist and a former sports psychologist for eight college national championship teams, enjoys working with adolescents and adults struggling with life challenges that compromise their ability to be at their best. Dr. Franco is highly invested in enhancing the self-esteem of his patients. His areas of expertise include:·         Athletic performance enhancement·         Psychological treatment of adolescents·         Cultural diversity training·         Marriage and family therapy·         Supervision of doctoral candidates in psychology·         Trauma recovery·         Sexual assault prevention among college students, particularly, student-athletes·         Existential therapyI'm an avid sports fan who played three years of college football and spent the past 20 years as a sports psychologist at the University of Notre Dame. I'm excited to be back in the Florida where I earned my doctorate degree. My wife, an electrical engineer, and I have three children, two of whom are psychologists.I enjoy assisting my patients in embracing the notion that we all want the same thing – to love and be loved in return. There is no greater joy for me as a psychologist than to experience the transformation in my patients as they grow and develop their self-esteem. When self-esteem is compromised, how love is expressed and received will also be compromised.I maintain a strong commitment to the process of celebrating the diversity that surrounds us. The process necessary to truly celebrate diversity starts with cultural humility. I am currently doing what I can to get the word out on in the Jacksonville Francesca M. It's also an excellent opportunity to have conversations about hard work and how to handle intense pressure that comes from both internal and external sources.  When we start these discussions early, it helps children develop the lifelong skills they need to manage emotional reactions when stressed. Kids that effectively cope with challenges are more likely to enjoy the moment and focus on doing their best rather than shooting for perfection.  |  |  | Helping kids cope with pressure  Part of Olympian training includes handling the intense pressure of being in the spotlight while simultaneously showing incredible athleticism. Caitlin is joined by two moms - Lara and Elizabeth - to discuss a dark but beautiful monstrous motherhood movie: The Others. It's a spooky and atmospheric retelling of The Turning of the Screw, and Nicole Kidman gets it exactly right. Suck it, Tom Cruise. We share our love of the costuming, the fog, and a tried and true horror trope done exceptionally well. Since the movie is, uh, dark, the motherhood fact is about mothers from the animal kingdom! Lots of cute mom/baby animal facts. Be sure to check out On Our Sleeves, the organization Lara mentioned. You can find them at onoursleeves.org.

Humans Are Emotional Beings Part 1: Back to School with A Lot to Learn Children, although not the most likely to be infected with COVID-19, have been affected by it the most. These kids are in critical stages of development and their worlds have changed dramatically in the past 6 months. They need our help managing and processing their emotions, especially during this time. Today, Lyndsie Pfeifer joins the show to talk about her family's experience and how they've helped their 8 year old daughter to overcome her anxiety. The book Lyndsie mentions: “Wilma Jean - The Worry Machine” https://www.amazon.com/dp/1937870014/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_api_i_5zCpFb3C0AF8X Nationwide Children's Hospital has launched a movement called On Our Sleeves that is focused on transforming children's mental health.
