Hey everyone, check out this episode that we recorded a while ago and Raul has been to much of a garbage parson to put out. Big thanks to Anthony R for the editing this. On this episode we look into the work of John Carl Buechler and explore Carnosaur, Cellar Dweller and Troll. Raul and Anthony are joined by special guest Jee Wreg! This is it! Our final podcast of 2024. We have a full house this episode with our friend and special guest, Elvis joining us. We recorded this show on Friday, December 13th and decided to break out the hockey mask once again. Part 7 is celebrated for Kane Hodder's inaugural performance as the unstoppable killer. Although the MPAA cut the violence to ribbons its the stunts and Jason work that really sells this pinnacle entry in the Friday series. Saurian cinema connoisseur Serge Bodnarchuk of Cold Crash Pictures joins Dan as guest co-host for a dinosaur sci-fi horror adventure from 1993. No, not that one. This is Movie Oubliette! It's the low-budget Roger Corman production Carnosaur, starring Laura Dern's mom, Diane Ladd, and Bryce Dallas Howard's uncle, Clint Howard! This adaptation of John Brosnan's novel hit 65 theatres a few weeks before Spielberg's blockbuster romped into box office history. Featuring astonishing special effects from Troll director John Carl Buechler, this alleged mockbuster is without doubt the scrappy underdog, but is it a charming creature feature that deserves to be rescued? In this episode Jef, Josh and Brian realized they had been talking about some higher caliber horror flicks as of late and needed to get back to some dumpster diving. The forgotten 80's creature feature “Cellar Dweller” would do the trick!! This one is a John Carl Buechler joint and Brian for one couldn't be happier to finally watch and talk about this crazy flick! You know how the FM3 love those little goobers, well get ready cause there is a huge Goober in this movie and he is an arteest! Our 80s Cult Movie lap continues with Troll, which falls right in line with some of the other pit stop movies we've been watching. We talk about JK Rowling totally definitely no way using this movie as inspiration for Harry Potter, the mixed feelings that Julia-Louis Dreyfus has about Troll, and what John Carl Buechler (predominantly a special effects guy) brought to the helm as director. We make our picks for the Most 80s Moment (and Joe makes a bonus pick), we discuss which residents of the building most reflect our own personalities, and we debate the correct order to convert an entire building of humans into trolls. We try to make sense of the (too late into the movie) plot explanation dumb, and we wonder if the movie could have been (gasp) longer. Filmmaker Renny Harlin (NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4, DIE HARD 2, CLIFFHANGER, DEEP BLUE SEA, THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT, DRIVEN, EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his long and incredible career journey. From growing up in Finland and sneaking into restricted films underage… to watching a scene being filmed for Don Siegel's TELEFON (1977) as a child and deciding in that moment that he was going to become a Hollywood action director… to how shooting just a part of his debut feature BORN AMERICAN (1986) lead to a US production company fully financing the rest of the production… to his early days being broke and struggling in Hollywood while living in a friend's garage… to how casting Kane Hodder in his first role as a creature character in 1987's PRISON lead to John Carl Buechler casting Kane as “Jason Voorhees” one year later… to making A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4: THE DREAM MASTER and how he came up with and shot the film's amazing opening sequence… to the unfortunate timing of 1990's THE ADVENTURES OF FIRD FAIRLANE which was released right as the cultural backlash began against comedian/star Andrew Dice Clay and how the film has surprisingly gone on to become one of his most beloved… to working with Sylvester Stallone on 1993's CLIFFHANGER… to creating one of the most memorable moments in cinema while shooting 1999's DEEP BLUE SEA… to making his latest feature THE STRANGERS: CHAPTER 1 (in theaters this weekend!) as part of a trilogy that was shot all at once… to the real reason he has yet to attend a DGA social event… Renny candidly opens up in this phenomenal conversation that is filled with cinema anecdotes, filmmaking advice and loads of inspiration. This week Bryan and Dave take a look at John Carl Buechler's swing-and-a-miss for the Charles Band dynasty, Troll. It's supposed to be filled with whimsy, adventure, and high-fantasy but is instead filled with crappy rubber monsters and cringe-inducing performances by actors tenured enough to know better by this point. Noah Hathaway casually throws away any goodwill he earned with his portrayal of Atreyu in The Neverending Story. Michael Moriarty seems to have no idea what he's even doing there. It's all a jumbled mess that somehow managed to be a smash-hit at the box office for Empire Pictures and a video rental gem of the 1980's. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bring-me-the-axe/message

Fallen Empire comes to an end with a John Carl Buechler classic and arguably one of Empire's best films! Harry Potter Jr. and his family (yes, that is his name) move into the same apartment building as the evil troll Torok, who wants to transform his neighbors into fae folk of the forest as a means to merge the realms. With his magic ring, Torok transforms into Harry's little sister Heather O'Rourke from Poltergeist and goes around the complex mutating the other tenants into plants, elves, and Ghoulies™. Phil Fondacaro delivers some of his best work to date, Sonny Bono and Julia Louis-Dreyfus fall prey to the costume jewelry ring of floral death, and Shelly Shack strikes back from ‘The Stepfather' so you know there are MDU family matters at stake here. Grab your anti-magic lightning spear, take those old records off the shelf, and don't forget the chocolate E. Nonetheless, we still enjoyed discussing this Charles Band production, directed by Roger Corman's long-time special effects wizard, John Carl Buechler. A comic book artists brings a creature to life through her drawings that feeds off of...creativity. Big thanks to Jennifer for requesting this one!
In this week's episode, the FM crew wade even deeper into the rubber-filled, olympic-size swimming pool of 'Little Goober' movies finally choosing the greasy muppet symphony that is John Carl Buechler and Chuck Band's "TROLL” (1986). Forever Midnight had a blast talking about how much better of an actor Phil Fondacaro is than Michael “Moe” Moriarty and coming to terms with our collective crush on the 70-year-old witch/stump in the film. All in all, it is a pretty bangin' episode as per usual from the Ghouliverse's favorite podcast!!

Join us for our review of the 1988 Slasher Film, Friday the 13th Part 7: The New Blood. Directed by John Carl Buechler and written by Daryl Haney and Manuel Fidello.
Finally got a chance to cover this underrated entry, and what a better day than today to get it done... I wish this director was still around to see this film get the flowers it deserves to this day because in my opinion, it gives me everything a FT13th film should give and adds a bit extra for the better. Not to mention that Kane Hodder's portrayal of Jason Voorhees is superior to any for me. It just sucks that the MPAA got their sensitive and silly ass paws on this and trimmed it all the way down. But it still works like a charm. Enjoy, people.

As some of you may have noticed, despite being called "Slashers," our show did not do a proper slasher film in its entire first year. Now, we do two in a single episode! In this grand finale to our "New Year, 'New' Movies" event, we pit Friday the 13th Part V A New Beginning against Part VII The New Blood. Doug argues that Part V, A New Beginning, is the penultimate, while Adam contends that Part VII, The New Blood, is actually superior. Jake acts as the mediator, with Adrienne being the jury. There are no ties here, goons! We have a decisive winner. Part V was directed by Danny Steinmann, who actually directed porn! The movie makes a lot more sense now, right? This movie is famous for having two depictions of Jason Voorhees, with the slasher never actually appearing in the film. There is a Voorhees in the film, albeit the actress Deborah Voorhees. Doug talks everything in this movie from the kill count to Roy Burns arguably being the best Jason in the Friday the 13th video game. Part VII was directed by John Carl Buechler, a sultan in the world of special effects, ranging from Troll to Re-Animator. This film pits the actual Jason against a drove of teenagers marching onward to doom like Lemmings if you forget to press pause AND JEAN GREY FROM X-MEN! (kinda). If that analogy is true, that makes Tina Shephard's "Charles Xavier," Dr. Crews, played by Terry Kiser. Despite over 100 acting credits to his name, you most assuredly know him best as the titular Bernie, from Weekend at Bernie's. *cue the now-redundant Bernie Sanders meme* And, to be fair, with our audience you might also remember him from Tammy and the T-Rex. Adam argues the effects, atmosphere, and debut of Kane Hodder. Where do you stand on the debate? Did we get it right? It is perhaps the most iconic and prolific horror franchise in the world, spear-headed by the genre's poster boy for death and destruction: Jason Voorhees. Friday the 13th has taken the world by storm, due in no small part to the proverbial mommy's boy, but the mythology of Jason changed much over the years. Barnabas and Samael remove the putrified hockey mask and reflect on Jason's evolution over time, the people who played him, and more in this episode honoring the late John Carl Buechler. His only directorial effort of the franchise, "Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood," is featured in the Cult Corner, along with "The Clovehitch Killer" strangling its way onto the Chopping Block!

On March 18, 2019 the world lost filmmaker and FX legend John Carl Buechler (FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VII: THE NEW BLOOD, TROLL, HATCHET). John was much more than just a beloved artist. He was also a husband, a father of three, and a dear friend. His passing is heartbreaking on a deeply personal level for both Adam Green and Joe Lynch. John was a childhood hero to both Adam and Joe as his work helped to shape/warp their young, horror loving, Fangoria obsessed minds. He was one of the very first to believe not only in Adam's "Victor Crowley" character but in Adam as a filmmaker. Immediately after reading Adam's screenplay for HATCHET John signed on as the film's lead effects artist even though the funding for the film was still not fully in place. John's mere involvement in the project as the film's FX artist helped give HATCHET some legitimacy within the genre world and helped Adam secure such veteran horror icons as Kane Hodder, Robert Englund, and Tony Todd for the film. However, John's role in the HATCHET franchise went far beyond designing the over the top effects seen on screen as he would also become an advisor, a cheerleader, and a friend. On the final day of THE MOVIE CRYPT's 2nd annual 48-hour marathon to benefit Save A Yorkie Rescue (2017), John Carl Buechler and Kane Hodder joined Adam, Joe, and Arwen to perform a live commentary for FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VII. The commentary was re-broadcast as an exclusive for THE MOVIE CRYPT's beloved Patreon supporters but has never been re-broadcast for the general public - until now. In the wake of John's passing Adam, Joe, and Arwen wanted to share this incredibly fun and informative moment in time with John's fans around the world. So put on your copy of FRIDAY VII at home and listen along as we remember John Carl Buechler and celebrate what many believe to be his finest work. Rest in peace, Maestro. Your cinematic legacy is eternal.

Why does Jason have to look like a lizard person in this? Is Terry Kiser sleeping with that disturbed girl's mother? And how did they not bother to recover that dead dad's body? PLUS: Being a professional gator wrangler in Hollywood pays handsomely! "Friday the 13th VII: The New Blood" stars Lar Park-Lincoln, Terry Kiser, John Otrin, Susan Blu, and Kane Hodder as Jason; directed by John Carl Buechler.
Are the trolls of ancient legend and fairy tales more menacing and relevant, or will the Internet trolls of the 21st century emerge victorious? Judge Darren Ewing hears expert arguments on both sides as Jeremiah Johnson argues the case of 1986's Troll, and Scott Baer debates on the side of 2012's Smiley, in this inaugural episode of Horror in the Court. The original Troll movie (not to mistaken with the non-sequel Troll 2 starring our own Judge Ewing) is a tale of a wizard-turned-troll that possesses the form of a young girl as he attempts to turn the world into a Troll universe. It is directed by John Carl Buechler and stars Noah Hathaway of Neverending Story Fame (ATREYU!) as the Harry Potter, Jr., 11-years before J.K. Rowling's boy wizard character of the same name. Other notables are Julia Louis Dreyfus, best known as Elaine from Seinfeld, and Sonny Bono.Smiley, directed by Michael J. Gallagher, contains a young cast of fresh-faced actors and is a 4Chan-inspired story of a band of Internet trolls and an urban legend killer called Smiley.Which troll will prevail?Be sure to come back next month when Judge Ewing will hear the case of Ravenous v. Feast, a battle of the people eaters!
