In conversation with Bulanda Nkhowani, Amina Idris and Koliwe Majama The annual campaign spearheaded by the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria is #Tech4Rights: Rethinking a human rights-based approach to new technologies in Africa. The #Tech4Rights campaign focuses on the impact of new technologies on different aspects of human interaction and the impact of technology on human rights. This campaign has a series of activities that look into technology in various specific areas. The Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria through its  Expression, Information and Digital Rights Unit, and Paradigm Initiative (PIN) entered into a partnership offering an academic course to 30 select participants of PIN's programmes and the Digital Rights and Inclusion Media Fellowship (DRIMF). DRIMF is a four-month fellowship with two intakes from 1 March to 30 June and from 1 August to 30 November each year. PIN also presents a 9-month Digital Rights and Inclusion Learning Lab from 1 March to 30 November every year. Through various learning methods, fellows are introduced to the international and regional digital rights ecosystem. The objectives of the fellowship are to expose participants to the digital rights landscape and enhance their knowledge and skills in digital rights in Africa. In light of this partnership and the annual campaign of the Centre, this episode discusses access to the internet and internet governance in Africa. The speakers, Bulanda Nkhowani, Amina Idris and Koliwe Majama, share their insights on access to the internet and internet governance, drawing their experiences from Zambia and Nigeria. The discussion explores what meaningful access means, based on Part IV of the African Commission on Human and People's Rights resolution on Freedom of Expression and Access to Information on the internet, including conversations on regulatory and operational challenges of licencing community networks in Africa. Furthermore, the discussion explores solutions for bridging the gender digital divide at national level and how to address the growing trend of network disruptions, both nationally and regionally. The podcast concludes by giving recommendations to service providers and governments on how to ensure that citizens have access to critical information during the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Bulanda Tapiwa Nkhowani is a writer, researcher and public policy enthusiast with a focus on internet governance, digital rights and digital inclusion, and is actively involved in internet governance policy forums and discussions at all levels. She is a co-convenor of the Zambia Internet Governance Forum (Zambia IGF) and an alumna of the Africa School on Internet Governance (AfriSIG). On this week of #SeriousPrivacy, Paul Breitbarth and K Royal discuss the potential new law for Colorado, the Colorado Privacy Act, SB21-190. On June 8, it was passed by the House, meaning it is now ready for the governor's signature. If it passes, it will be the third state omnibus privacy law in the US, with Virginia having passed the Consumer Data Protection Act (CDPA) earlier this year and of course, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). In this episode, we cover elements such as government practices, individual rights, the extensive opt outs, and key definitions. For example, one topic is centered on how in Colorado bills can become law by “letting it ride” after 30 days - and why Colorado has 30 days for the governor to sign. This contrasts with the federal provision of the pocket veto. Join us as we discuss the specifics of the potential Colorado Privacy Act, its penalties, and its comparisons to the CCPA, Virginia CDPA, and the GDPR. More detail on the Colorado Privacy Act can be found on TrustArc's website, where we provide extensive detail in a series of four blogs - Part I - a general overview with key definitions and enforcement Part II - individual rightsPart III - special processing activities and opt outs (sales of data, profiling, targeted ads)Part IV - responsibilities of the parties and contractsIf you did not catch today's webinar on the SCCs and EU activities, please feel free to watch it - hot off the presses with both Paul and K. As always, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact us at seriousprivacy@trustarc.com. Loung Ung's incredible memoir "First They Killed My Father" is a tragic reminder of the realities of the Killing Fields in Cambodia, but also a lesson in the importance of historical empathy. Her story is simultaneously a harrowing account of the realities of genocide, yet also a testament to shared humanity, love, and the triumph of the human spirit.  This is Part IV in a series on the Cambodian Genocide. The final episode will look at children's stories and memories from the Killing Fields.  I relied heavily on Ben Kiernan's "The Pol Pot Regime," Loung Ung's "First They Killed My Father," and Dith Pran's "Children of Cambodia's Killing Fields." Vaccination Nation, Part IV – The Distribution Bottleneck

Talk Ten Tuesdays

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 23, 2021 32:24

Infection rates from the coronavirus are declining. Vaccination rates are increasing. And while that’s good news, word on the ground is anything but good. Vaccination distribution in the U.S. has been, by most accounts, uneven, with reports of supplies not keeping up with demand in many states. And this week, a spate of bad weather, particularly in Texas and states across the Southeast, is hampering vaccination efforts – and in some cases, cancelling mass inoculation events. During the next live edition of Talk-Ten-Tuesdays Susan Gatehouse, founder and CEO for Axea Solutions, and Deborah Grider, senior healthcare consultant for Karen Zupko and Associates, will report on vaccination rates in their respective states: Georgia and Indiana. It will mark one of several segments making up Part IV of Vaccination Nation, an exclusive series being produced by ICD10monitor for Talk-Ten-Tuesdays. Also during the program, TTT executive producer Chuck Buck and co-host Erica Remer, MD will answer listeners’ questions in real time. Joining them on the program will be Lynne Comstock, who, like Remer, is a volunteer inoculator in Corpus Christi, Texas. Remer is volunteering with the Medical Reserve Corps of the Cuyahoga County Board of Health in Ohio. The global COVID-19 pandemic has now resulted in more than 110 million cases worldwide, as well as 2.45 million deaths. More than 28 million of those cases and more than half a million deaths have occurred in the U.S. alone. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently reported that more than 56 million doses of the vaccine have been administered across the country.Still, there’s the disturbing trend of vaccine hesitancy. Driven by misinformation, lack of trust, and concerns about safety and efficacy, vaccine hesitancy is considered to be one of the top global health threats, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).The live broadcast will also feature these other segments:News Desk: Ronald Hirsch, MD will anchor the Talk Ten Tuesdays News Desk. The Coding Report: Laurie Johnson, senior healthcare consultant for Revenue Cycle Solutions, LLC, will report on the latest ICD-10 codes.

Hubert Harrison: The Struggle for Equality, 1918-1927 (Columbia University 2020) by Jeffrey B. Perry, independent scholar and archivist, is an extensive intellectual history of the life and work of Black radical and autodidact Hubert Harrison. Perry is also editor of A Hubert Harrison Reader (Wesleyan, 2001) and author of Hubert Harrison: The Voice of Harlem Radicalism, 1883-1918 (Columbia, 2008). He is the chief biographer of Hubert Harrison and Hubert Harrison: The Struggle for Equality is a follow up to his aforementioned text on Harrison. (these two volumes can be ordered from Columbia University Press at 20% discount by using Code CUP20). Perry’s volume on Harrison’s life from 1883 to 1918 is considered to be the first volume of an Afro-Caribbean “and only the fourth of an African American after those of Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Langston Hughes” (1). This current text is a continuation of the argument advanced in Perry’s initial text on Harrison. Harrison is often left out of major surveys of the Harlem Renaissance and New Negro Era, as Perry notes, and this is likely because the Renaissance is often viewed as a movement of Black intellectual elites with formal higher education. That said, Harrison was a working-class self-taught man who wrote reviews, essays, orations and was recognized by intellectual elites of his day and a member of the Socialist Party of America. Harrison was born in Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands in 1883 but relocated to the Harlem section of New York City in 1900, at age seventeen, where he eventually became a recognized writer, cultural critic, orator, editor and political activist including working with Marcus Garvey’s Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). Perry defines Harrison as “the voice” of Harlem radicalism and also a “radical internationalist.” This is a challenge to standard views of the New Negro Era that tend to place intellectuals such as Alain Locke and W.E.B. Du Bois at the helm of Black thought and culture during the Harlem Renaissance moment in African American history. That said, Harrison was also involved with Garvey’s UNIA as editor of the Negro World and in labor activism. Harrison formed the Liberty League in 1917 and The Voice that helped to lay the foundation of the Garvey Movement and the Rise of the UNIA. He was involved in the major debates of his day including discussions about class consciousness, Black nationalism, internationalism, freethought and trade unionism. This second volume by Perry is very necessary given Harrison’s extensive engagement with the ideas and the production of knowledge as a self-taught organic intellectual with deep concerns about human liberation across class and race. Hubert Harrison: The Struggle for Black Equality is organized into four major sections divided by twenty chapters including an “Epilogue.” It is a far-reaching text of more than 700 pages. Part I focuses on Harrison’s work with The Voice and his political activities in places such as Washington, D.C. and Virginia, In Part II, Harrison’s role as editor of the Negro World is assessed with a discussion of his debates and writings. Part III concerns Harrison’s work as a “freelance educator” and his work as a writer and speaker, while the final part of the text Part IV covers his role as a Black radical internationalist. This is a critically important text. Scholars of the Harlem Renaissance will find it difficult to dismiss Hubert Harrison as a major voice of the New Negro Era with the publication of this text. Perry’s painstaking coverage of Harrison gives him his rightful place in history as “the voice of Harlem radicalism.” Hettie V. Williams Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of African American history in the Department of History and Anthropology at Monmouth University where she teaches courses in African American history and U.S. history.
