Small teams with smart AI can solve problems no one imagined before. In this episode, I spoke with Zhen Lu, CEO of Runpod, about the rapidly evolving AI landscape and the future of software development. Zhen Lu shared how Runpod is empowering engineers to train AI models tailored to specific business needs, improve efficiency, and reduce waste. We also discussed his founder journey, the power of co-founder alignment, global innovation outside traditional tech hubs, and the importance of human accountability in AI-driven organizations. Here are the highlights: ● Runpod builds AI developer infrastructure. The platform supports tailored AI workloads, enabling businesses to efficiently train models specific to their needs. ● AI is changing how software is built. Engineers are challenged to rethink software design, not just accelerate existing processes, creating new opportunities for innovation. ● Efficiency and sustainability matter. Fine-tuning smaller, focused models reduces resource waste, energy consumption, and operational costs compared to massive off-the-shelf models. ● Co-founder alignment drives success. Implicit trust, complementary skills, and low ego between Zhen and his co-founder have accelerated decision-making and execution. ● Global networks and bootstrapping foster innovation. Scarcity encourages creativity, and building strong relationships outside Silicon Valley has enabled Runpod to grow and support AI developers worldwide. About the guest: Zhen Lu and co-founder Pardeep Singh started by running crypto mining rigs out of their New Jersey basements. When Ethereum's "The Merge" threatened to make that obsolete, they pivoted, converting the rigs into AI servers. As corporate developers at Comcast building ML projects, they saw firsthand that the GPU developer experience was, in Zhen's words, "just hot garbage." That insight became Runpod. Launched in early 2022, Runpod offers fast, developer-friendly GPU infrastructure: clean APIs, CLI tools, serverless options, and easy configuration. Rather than the traditional VC route, they debuted on Reddit with "Hey Reddit, give us your worst" — and got "please take my money" in return. They went on to earn validation from Hugging Face co-founder Julien Chaumond and a seed round led by Dell Technologies Capital, hitting $120M ARR, 10 billion serverless requests, and serves ~900,000 developers across 31 global regions. Megan chats with Zhen Zhou about surviving a massive traffic hit, rebuilding income through diversification, and rethinking what it really means to build a sustainable food blog. Zhen Zhou downshifted from a corporate track post-MBA to full-time content creation and is loving it. She currently runs three blogs: greedygirlgourmet.com, alovelettertoasia.com, and tjtakesthetrain.com. If your blog has felt like a roller coaster since the HCU, this episode will feel grounding. Zhen shares what happened when her traffic dropped by 70 percent, why she stopped obsessing over Google, and how systems, funnels, and brand clarity helped her move forward without burning out. This is not a silver bullet episode. It is an honest look at adapting in a landscape that keeps changing. Key Topics Discussed: Stop waiting for Google to save you: Relying on one traffic source is no longer realistic and waiting it out keeps you stuck. Diversification works but it is not simple: Running multiple sites helped offset losses but also revealed how much energy different niches require. Pinterest needs a system not hope: Random pinning creates noise while structured testing creates clarity and consistency. Your sub niche matters more than you think: Seasonality and trends behave differently depending on what type of food you actually publish. Traffic without a funnel is fragile: Fewer clicks can outperform big traffic when those clicks lead somewhere intentional. Email challenges outperform free downloads: Inviting people into an experience builds stronger engagement and fewer unsubscribes. Branding starts before colors and logos: A blog needs a reason to exist beyond recipes if you want people to seek you out. Hope is a better strategy than fear: Letting fear dictate decisions leads to paralysis while hope keeps you moving forward. Connect with Zhen Zhou Website | Instagram

Welcome to another episode of the Sustainable Clinical Medicine Podcast! In this episode, Dr. Zhen Chan shares his unique journey from growing up in Miami, Florida to becoming a pediatrician in Washington, DC, and ultimately venturing into the entrepreneurial side of healthcare. Dr. Chan discusses his educational background, including an MD-MBA dual degree, and how it shaped his interests in blending artistic and scientific aspects within the medical field. He delves into his clinical practice in the 'fast track' side of an emergency room and his desire to improve healthcare systems. Dr. Chan also talks about his entrepreneurial endeavors, like founding Grapevine, a community focused on healthcare workforce optimization and reducing burnout among medical professionals. Throughout the conversation, he emphasizes the importance of networking and staying updated with technological advancements to better serve patients and the healthcare community. Here are 3 key takeaways from this episode: 1. The Power of Networking in Healthcare: Dr. Chan emphasizes that building professional relationships and communities—like her Grapevine initiative—is crucial for career growth, combating burnout, and reducing social isolation among healthcare professionals. Networking is not just for business leaders; it's essential for clinicians at all stages. 2. Innovation and Entrepreneurship are Vital for Modern Physicians: Dr. Chan's journey shows that blending clinical practice with entrepreneurial thinking and process improvement (such as Six Sigma and MBA training) can help address systemic issues in healthcare. Physicians can—and should—embrace innovation to improve patient care and the healthcare system. 3. Technology and AI Can Reduce Administrative Burden: The discussion highlights how AI-powered tools (like scribing and coding assistants) are transforming healthcare by reducing administrative workload, allowing doctors to focus more on patient care. Accurate documentation and embracing new technologies are key to improving efficiency and outcomes. Meet Dr. Zhen Chan: Dr. Zhen Chan is a practicing pediatrician at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC and Founder/CEO of Grapevyne, a community dedicated to empowering physician autonomy and wellbeing through better networking and understanding about healthcare beyond medicine. He graduated from the University of Miami with his BS in Neuroscience and Criminology, MD, and MBA in Health Management & Policy. After completing his education, he went on to complete his pediatrics residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medicine, where his work in quality improvement and advocacy projects revealed a career path to impact healthcare at scale beyond the exam room. In addition to his clinical practice and his own community, he advises other healthcare startups as well focused on improving healthcare access. Connect with Dr. Zhen Chan:

Freshman quarterback Micah Alejado, named Mountain West Freshman of the Year, played through heavy contact to throw for 274 yards and three touchdowns. Hawaiʻi Bowl MVP Pofele Ashlock hauled in 14 receptions for 123 yards and two scores as the Warriors outscored the Golden Bears 35-10 down the stretch. The defining moment came with 15 seconds remaining. Trailing by three, Hawaiʻi faced sudden adversity when Alejado was knocked out of the game after a late hit. Backup quarterback Luke Weaver was called upon to deliver in the game's biggest moment, and did just that, dropping a 22-yard go-ahead touchdown pass to senior receiver Nick Cenacle. The play, quickly etched into Hawaiʻi football lore, sealed the Warriors' first Hawaiʻi Bowl victory since 2010 and completed a comeback that will be remembered among the program's greatest moments.Head coach Timmy Chang, in his fourth season, closed out a 9-4 campaign that saw Hawaiʻi bookend the year with wins over ACC opponents Stanford and California, further signaling the program's resurgence under his leadership. On Hawaiʻi Football Final, DeMello and Sotelo reflected on the emotional weight of the victory, the belief inside the locker room while trailing by three touchdowns, and the confidence the team had in Weaver when he stepped into the huddle for the final play. The episode also featured the “HFF Mailbox” segment, answering viewer-submitted questions, and looked ahead to what's next for the Rainbow Warriors following a season that reignited excitement around Hawaiʻi football.Hawaiʻi Football Final premieres every Sunday at 7 p.m. on the KHON+ app, available on Apple TV, Roku and Firestick. Zhen Xu knew that most people thought it was impossible to use an ultrasound machine to destroy tumors inside the body. But Zhen was still a University of Michigan Ph.D. student; she decided she could afford to try. After years of testing how to control the high-intensity sound waves, that decision paid off and a new, non-invasive medical procedure was born. In 2009, Zhen co- founded HistoSonics, a Plymouth, Minnesota company whose non-invasive platform liquifies and destroys tumors at the sub cellular level. HistoSonics was acquired in August 2025 for $2.25 billion by a consortium of top-tier investors that included Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and PayPal and Palantir Technologies co-founder Peter Thiel acquired a majority stake in August 2025 in HistoSonics. For a bonus episode this week, Emilio goes solo for a (mostly) spoiler free talk about a film he really loves, Ang Lee's "The Wedding Banquet".  It was a successful and critically acclaimed independent film back when it was released in 1993, but has mostly stayed relevant as its esteemed director's international breakthrough.  Yet it's a timeless film full of humor, compassion,  and reflections on what we sacrifice of ourselves due to societal forces and the expectations of our families.  Its enduring place in cinema history is evidenced by it being reimagined by writer/director Andrew Ahn - this remake can currently be seen in theaters nationwide.   Emilio gets into what he enjoys so much about the original, shares his thoughts on the remake and how it is distinct from the original, and speaks with Professor Zhen Zhang, an NYU film professor who shared this film with him in an undergraduate seminar, about Ang Lee's original film.  Professor Zhen Zhang is a film professor at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and the Director of the Tisch's Asian Film and Media Initiative.  She has a decades long, decorated career in academia that also includes guest-curating film programs for the Film Society at Lincoln Center of Performing Arts, Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Women Make Waves Film Festival in Taipei. If you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice.  This really helps us find new listeners and grow!Follow us on IG and TikTok: @sleeplesscinematicpodSend us an email at sleeplesscinematicpod@gmail.comOn Letterboxd? In this episode of Curing with Sound, Zhen Xu, PhD, the Li Ka Shing Endowed Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan, discusses histotripsy. Dr. Xu and her colleagues developed histotripsy, the first noninvasive, nonthermal ultrasound ablation technique that received FDA approval for liver tumor treatment in 2023. Her work has led to multiple clinical trials on histotripsy treatment for malignant and benign tumors.  Dr. Xu shares the 20-year journey from initial discovery to clinical application and highlights histotripsy's remarkable ability to mechanically break down targeted tissue without incisions or radiation. She also recounts inspiring patient stories from clinical trials, including patients who experienced no pain and returned to normal activities immediately after treatment.  Regulatory Approval: In October 2023, the FDA cleared HistoSonics' novel therapy platform, Edison™, to treat liver tumors. Edison™ uses histotripsy to noninvasively destroy liver tissue. This is the first time the use of histotripsy has earned regulatory approval worldwide. The Science Behind Histotripsy: Dr. Xu explains how histotripsy uses focused ultrasound pulses to rapidly expand and collapse microbubbles that break down targeted cells with remarkable precision. Future Directions: Dr. Xu envisions continued expansion of histotripsy applications over the next five years, including wider adoption for liver tumors, regulatory approvals for additional indications, and the development of new platforms for brain and shallow tumor treatments. So it made sense that he would pause his medical education and obtain a traditional MBA degree. With those degrees under his belt, he attended a pediatric residency. He went one step further and worked for a venture capital firm during his first year of pediatric practice. Now he is the CEO of a start-up company and a part-time practicing pediatrician. The company he leads, Grapevyne, facilitates job searches for physicians while reducing the costs of recruitment to hospitals and medical groups. During our conversation today, Zhen describes what motivated him to attempt to balance 2 major careers so early in his career. Then we learn about his vision for Grapevyne, and what has been accomplished so far. He also provides details on the Grapevyne incentive program that encourages physicians to share job openings with each other by offering modest finders fees. And he shares his vision for growing the company while offering other valuable free and low-cost services to physicians, including referrals for nonclinical jobs.
