This week, Andi is speaking with Christenne King. She is the Senior Donation Coordinator. She meets family in very difficult times. Tune in to hear about her experiences as it relates to the important process of organ donation.  Episode Highlights:  Many people believe that organ, eye, and tissue donation is just a service of the hospital but Andi shares how it is much bigger than that and requires the collaboration of many. Christenne has been with the Life Center for over 20 years and is currently the Senior Donation Coordinator. She explains her role as one of the individuals who handles the evaluation, medical management, organ placement, and logistics of the operating room for an organ donation. Andi asks Christenne to share what kind of training and background is required to do work as she does. Christenne shares her personal experience with organ donation about her sister, Adrienne King who had epilepsy and cerebral palsy. What does brain dead mean? Christenne shares facts that listeners may not be aware of. She explains the difference between that and a vegetative state or coma. Organ donation and the education around it have grown significantly over the years.  Christenne explains her connection to Network For Hope and how meaningful it has been to her on several levels. Christenne put herself to paramedic school and applied as an organ coordinator. Andi asks Christenne how she prepares for her day and meeting with families in desperate times.  What happens at the bedside to evaluate potential organ donation? Christenne shares that some cases have changed her forever and how it has been a blessing. What goes into supporting the families who are in contact with them? Andi talks about how COVID-19 caused many people to reflect and seek more meaningful jobs. Andi asks Christenne to share what a typical workday looks like for a donation coordinator.  Logistics and time frames are very important in the process; Christenne explains. A lot of communication is required for this job because of the many pieces that must come together. An average case lasts about 72 hours so that the right thing is accomplished with the donor. Christenne talks about when organ gifts are placed in other locations. The donation coordinators are very passionate about giving each individual the best preservation options. Have you thought about registering to be a donor? Find out more at https://lifepassiton.org/ 3 Key Points Christenne shares her personal experience with organ donation when her sister, Adrienne King passed away and saved several other lives. It was so rare.” -Christenne “Donation can have such a  positive effect on those that are donor families. “ -Christenne “This role requires you to be strong and sensitive to the fact that a family is going through the worst possible time.” -Andi “We are intimately involved with the families in the room and with the donors in the room, it is difficult.” -Christenne “Other than being a parent, this job is the most rewarding thing I will do in my life.” -Christenne Resources Mentioned: https://getoffthelist.org/ https://www.networkforhope.org/ https://www.networkforhope.org/about-us/ https://www.facebook.com/NetworkForHopeOPO

On tonight's show, I welcome Ashli Giles-Perkins and Adrienne King to the show. Ashli is a staff attorney with the Education Law Center and Adrienne King is the President and Founder of the PairUp Society and a parent of two children in the Pennridge School district. Today we'll be talking about the discrimination complaint against the Pennridge School Districts filed with the U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division and the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights. The complaint charges that the Pennridge School District has discriminated against LGBTQ+ students and students of color in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Title IX of the Educational Amendments Act of 1972. We'll talk about what all that means and the history of ongoing and systemic discrimination in the districts. And, we'll talk about what the election of a new school board majority may mean for how this complaint addressed.  Ashli Giles-Perkins joined the Philadelphia office of the Education Law Center in October 2020 as an Independence Foundation Public Interest Law Fellow. Ashli's work centers on addressing the significant educational injustices for youth involved in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems in the Philadelphia area who enter, reside in, and leave residential facilities. Ashli provides representation of students and families, training for families and communities, and significant outreach to stakeholders to ensure oversight, accountability, and access to quality education for system-involved youth. Originally from Bridgeport, Connecticut, Ashli graduated with a J.D. from Loyola University Chicago School of Law with a certificate in child & family law, as well as with an M.Ed. in cultural educational policy studies from Loyola Chicago's School of Education. While at Loyola, Ashli interned with Advocates for Children of New York and the Chicago Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights.  Adrienne King is a wife, mother of two daughters in the Pennridge School District, and an outspoken leader and advocate in the community. Adrienne founded The PairUP Society , a 501c3 non-profit organization after experiencing difficulties in her children's school district and realizing the difficulties of navigating that system for her and other underrepresented students and their families. The PairUp Society helps build community among underrepresented students and their families and provide them with resources to advocate for their needs while also activating allies to provide support.    Adrienne holds a BS in Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh, MS in Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs from Temple University and leadership certifications from Duke University and Cornell University. Adrienne and her family currently reside in Perkasie, PA where she is committed to putting roots down in their community and doing the work to create a sense of psychological safety, belonging and inclusion for all community members LINKS Education Law Center | https://www.elc-pa.org/ The PairUp Society | https://www.thepairupsociety.org/ Civil Rights Complaint against Pennridge School District | https://bit.ly/3RBZCZB WHYY article on the Civil Rights complaint | https://bit.ly/4agzU47 "Civil RIghts Complaint Filed Against Pennridge School District," Jenny Stephens, Bucks County Beacon | https://bit.ly/3NnFbNH "Understanding OCR complaints, like in the Pennridge School District, and their role to ensure equal access to high-quality public education," Jenny Stephens, Bucks County Beacon | https://bit.ly/3GBhHAP If we want a progressive future, we need progressive media. In this episode published one day after Monday the Thirteen, hosts Katherine Troyer and Toni Tresca continue their discussion of the beloved camp-filled and campy franchise by discussing the 1981 horror slasher film Friday the 13th Part 2. Episode Highlights: We talk about how much we enjoyed this film's cold opening (perhaps the first cold opening we've liked!) and how this opening scene allowed us to further examine the idea of the Final Girl as a trauma survivor, particularly in light of Adrienne King's real-life stalker. We explore the ridiculousness that is the idea of camp (who gives children bows-and-arrows?) and how this film explores the ideas of camp in interesting ways by setting the narrative at a camp for camp counselors. And we discuss how we would have liked to have seen more of Muffin...perhaps as Jason's furry, evil sidekick.  A Dose of Scholarship: Although we did not discuss any specific scholarship in this episode, we highly encourage you to check out Horror Homeroom's first special issue "Friday the 13th at 40"  if you are interested in digging deeper into this franchise. The Blind Rage podcast: Horror Movie Commentaries

“His name was Jason…and today is his birthday.” What can be said about the 1980 proto slasher that hasn't already been said a thousand times before? Well, other than the 2009 remake should simply slip into the ether, never to be heard from again, and that to give Corey Feldman even the slightest hope that he'll be included in any future incarnations of the franchise would be a huge mistake indeed. Other than that, this commentary has me rambling on about my childhood fandom of the series, swearing a solemn vow that I won't purchase the Scream Factory boxed set (which I ultimately did), and calling Adrienne King's character by the wrong name about a hundred times. Hey, I never claimed to be a professional. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/blindragepod/message

Joining the conversation is genre legend and the star of the original FRIDAY THE 13th herself, Adrienne King, who shares her insight on four decades of fandom and a powerful, personal story about finding light in the darkness. Then, Grady Hendrix, bestselling author of THE FINAL GIRL SUPPORT GROUP, stops by to discuss how his work was undeniably influenced by the F13 franchise and why final girls are, in many ways, part of our modern mythology.
