What is PCOS and how does it affect fertility? Today we will discuss PCOS – Polycystic ovarian syndrome and how it impacts infertility and pregnancy. If you have PCOS, this conversation will give you information on how to advocate for your best pregnancy. As we dive into this topic, we will examine the role the environment plays on the endocrine system and on hormones in general. After having this conversation, I actually went through my beauty products and cleaning supplies and got rid of many of them. As I learned more about this subject, I realized how delicate our bodies are and how outside factors can greatly influence our health, especially when looking at PCOS. We welcome Doreen Block and Dr. Aumatma Simmons on this episode of Yoga|Birth|Babies. Doreen Bloch is the Founder of ELLEMENT, the first personalized prenatal supplement company. She is a Forbes 30 Under 30 CEO who has pioneered a patent-pending prenatal supplement solution after discovering the challenges with bioavailability and customization from every other prenatal on the market. Dr. Aumatma is a double board-certified Naturopathic Doctor & Endocrinologist, in practice for close to 15 years. She specializes in fertility and is the best-selling author of two books: “Fertility Secrets: What Your Doctor Didn't Tell You About Baby-Making” and “(In)Fertility: Struggles, Secrets, & Successes.” Doreen recommends that new parents trust their instincts. She reminds them that this is their journey and they know what is best for their families. Dr. Aumatma suggests that parents consider removing toxins from their environment as soon as possible, even before conception. She acknowledges that this can be an overwhelming task and advices to take it slow. She recommends starting with one change and then slowly altering habits. This is a big topic, however, I really appreciate how this discussion is easy to follow and understand. I think you will get a lot out of it! This episode is an intimate conversation about infertility and the pressure that comes with it. Leila, our guest on the show, has a condition called PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome), which can cause infertility. In most cases, society will blame/judge a woman when she cannot conceive. For a long period of time, they won't even remember that her partner could be the one with a medical condition. Due to stigma, social norms, and accessibility of medical care/services, cases of infertility are diagnosed late or not at all. Leave a comment on www.6inthe.com,

Polycystic ovarian syndrome or polycystic ovarian disease is a condition that occurs in females, which involves having too much androgen. Typically males have more androgens and/or testosterone. Women do naturally have androgens, but not at the same levels. High levels of androgens in women can cause polycystic ovarian syndrome symptoms. Polycystic ovarian syndrome symptoms: • Facial hair • More body hair • Acne • Hair loss (a receding hairline) • Deeper voice • Irregular cycles or no cycles • Cysts on the ovaries I believe insulin causes PCOS with two different mechanisms. Mechanism #1 The first one involves a hormone from the pituitary called LH. When you increase insulin, you're going to get a spike in LH, which comes down from the pituitary to the ovaries. Once this hormone connects with the ovaries, it triggers this certain cell called a theca cell, which increases androgens. Mechanism #2 There is a buffering mechanism in your liver called SHGB. This compound buffers androgens. When you increase insulin, you decrease this compound. Then, you get less buffering and more free testosterone. Topic - Autism and PCOS Polycystic ovarian syndrome or PCOS increases the risk of having a child with autism by nearly sixty percent. Women with PCOS have enlarged ovaries with small cysts that produce excessive amounts of androgens or male hormones. Androgens are critical to the development of the brain and central nervous system. The exposure to sex hormones early in fetal development likely plays a role in the child's risk of autism. Between five and fifteen percent of women have been diagnosed with PCOS. Although it's uncertain if it causes autism, women with the condition should educate themselves about the earliest signs of autism such as limited eye contact, failure to laugh or babble and follow mother's gaze. Create a team with a pediatric speech and language therapist and a child development specialist ahead of the birth so your questions can be answered early and confidently. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/drclaudia/message

Nicole Granato joins on me on the podcast today. Nicole is a holistic nutritionist and wellness coach, who specializes in treating hormonal imbalances, adrenal fatigue, eating disorders and much more. Today’s we’re discussing PCOS “Polycystic ovary syndrome” The Mayo Clinic’s definition of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder common among women of reproductive age. Women with PCOS may have infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods or excess male hormone (androgen) levels. The ovaries may develop numerous small collections of fluid (follicles) and fail to regularly release eggs. Nicole challenges this traditional definition of PCOS. In her opinion you shouldn’t be diagnosed with PCOS unless an ultrasound shows you have cysts on your ovaries. Traditionally Dr.’s treat PCOS by prescribing Birth Control. In this episode Nicole challenges that treatment option and provides holistic ways to treat PCOS. She cured her own PCOS without the use of Birth Control or other medication and has helped many other women do the same. Key Takeaway: There is more then one way to treat PCOS and you shouldn’t necessarily believe you have PCOS unless you have cysts on your ovaries. Highlights: Taking bits and pieces of different diets Being diagnosed with PCOS Hormone disrupters Balancing hormones naturally vs. using Birth Control PCOS Symptoms PCOS affects about 1 in 6 or 1 in 8 women Misdiagnosis’s The cause of PCOS is unclear Treating PCOS though diet and lifestyle Weight gain, irregular periods and hairloss – precursors to PCOS Find more from Nicole: Website: www.nicolegranato.com Facebook: Nicole Granato Wellness Instagram: @nicolegranato For daily fitness, nutrition and life inspiration, as well as glimpses into my daily life, follow me on Instagram and Facebook!
