The Wall Street Skinny podcast is an incredible resource for anyone looking to understand the complex world of finance and Wall Street. Hosted by Kristen and Jen, this podcast offers clear explanations of complex concepts in a way that is accessible and engaging. Even if you have no desire to work in finance, having a basic understanding of topics like interest rates is invaluable in today's world. As a University Career Coach specializing in Finance & Consulting, I highly recommend this podcast to all of my students as it provides detailed expertise and spot-on information. Kristen and Jen bring infectious energy that keeps listeners engaged throughout each episode.
One of the best aspects of The Wall Street Skinny is its ability to explain complex concepts clearly. Kristen and Jen have a great gift for breaking down difficult topics into digestible pieces, starting from layman's terms and gradually building up to a comprehensive understanding. This makes it easier for listeners to grasp the information presented without feeling overwhelmed or confused. The hosts' humor and banter also add an element of fun to the episodes, making them enjoyable to listen to while still delivering valuable information.
While it is difficult to find any significant flaws with this podcast, one aspect that could be improved upon is the frequency of episodes. As someone who thoroughly enjoys listening to The Wall Street Skinny, I find myself eagerly awaiting each new episode. However, there may be longer gaps between episodes at times, which can leave listeners craving more content. It would be great if the hosts could release episodes more consistently to cater to their dedicated audience.
In conclusion, The Wall Street Skinny is an outstanding podcast that succeeds in making finance accessible and interesting for listeners who may not have prior knowledge or experience in this field. Kristen and Jen's expertise combined with their dynamic personalities make for an engaging listening experience that never fails to educate and entertain. Whether you are a student hoping to enter the finance world or simply someone wanting to learn more about how Wall Street operates, this podcast is a must-listen.

Send us a textWe're back and breaking down Season 2, Episode 7 of Industry: “Lone Wolf and Cub.” This one is dense with real finance concepts—starting with Harper, Eric, and Rishi's attempt to “hit a bid away” and pitch themselves as a ready-made desk to rival firms. We get into how traders actually get paid, why comp guarantees are risky, and what it means to bring “client color” as your leverage in a job switch. Plus: why Rishi's pitch as a prop-style trader who embraces client flow is more old school than it sounds—and why that still matters. We also break down how sales and trading teams actually work, the dynamics of headhunter-driven moves versus warm intros, and the very real consequences of interviewing without an offer in hand. For anyone trying to understand what's real and what's dramatized when it comes to switching firms, negotiating comp, and building leverage on the Street, this episode is basically a case study. On the character side, we unpack the growing tension between Robert, Nicole, and Venetia—and how the firm (and culture) handles client misconduct. Plus, Yaz is clearly in deeper than she realizes, and Daria pulls off what might be the best power play of the series. We wrap with our take on who's up, who's down, and what this episode gets right (and wrong) about how finance careers really work.Sign up for our Excel and Financial Modeling Masterclass May 29 at 12pm HERE (or if you're still in the 48 hour window, register to access the replay!)Shop the MAY SALE:- Buy the FULL IBD / PE course for 20% off HERE- M&A Standalone Course $50 OFF HERE Enroll in the Financial Modeling Talent Accelerator HERE Join the Fixed Income Sales and Trading waitlist HERE Our content is for informational purposes only. We break down the proposed tax bill currently moving through Congress, the state of U.S. debt and deficits, and insider trading laws for elected officials, and Seth's background in finance and public service working as the youngest treasurer of Rhode Island for 8 years. We dive into the details of the proposed $5 trillion tax cuts, $2 trillion spending cuts, and the projected $3–5 trillion increase in debt over the next decade — and what all of this could mean for markets, companies, and investors. Send us a textIn this episode of The Wall Street Skinny, Kristen and Jen kick announce the launch of their long-awaited M&A course, part of their dynamic, story-driven finance curriculum. They discuss how the course, two years in the making, blends real-world technicals with the drama of HBO's Succession, making complex M&A concepts like accretion/dilution, deferred taxes, and tax structuring both engaging and accessible. They also announce a major May SALE on their self-paced course, see the links below to participate! From there, the conversation dives deep into the latest market headlines. Jen unpacks the recent Fed meeting, clarifying misconceptions about quantitative easing and explaining how the Fed is managing its shrinking balance sheet through non-competitive treasury purchases. They also discuss how these moves tie into broader concerns about stagflation, market liquidity, and the mechanics behind treasury auctions—demystifying some of the viral finance content floating around online. Finally, they pivot to the major private equity news of the week: 3G Capital's $9.3 billion bid to take Skechers private. Kristen and Jen break down why companies often seek the shelter of private ownership during times of market turmoil, the structure of 3G's offer (including rollover equity options for shareholders), and what this signals for the broader M&A environment. Send us a textThis week we start off talking about what's happening in the markets: the latest GDP print—and why the headline number being down isn't quite as simple as it sounds. We unpack the mechanics behind the contraction, including how tariff-fueled inventory surges and net import dynamics played a role. We also dive into real-time supply chain stress, from container ships skipping ports to what that means for everything from baby gear to air conditioning parts. If you're confused by the mixed signals from the market (like why stocks are back at pre-tariff levels despite growing economic headwinds), you're not alone—and we break down what might really be going on under the hood. From there, we tackle one of our most-requested topics: how to turn your summer internship into a full-time offer. Whether you're about to hit the desk in sales & trading, investment banking, or even private equity, we share the practical advice no one gives you—like why social skills matter just as much as technical chops, how to navigate rotational programs, and why getting coffee (yes, really) can actually be strategic. We also discuss how the internship landscape has changed over the past decade and what you need to know about recruiting timelines, return offers, and what happens if you don't get one. Finally, we zoom out to discuss the broader trends shaping Wall Street careers right now: the shifting prestige of private equity, the evolving exit opportunities for sales & trading analysts, and why the “best” path isn't always the right one. If you're a student, early-career finance professional, or just trying to understand how to play the long game in today's market, this is the episode you've been waiting for. Oh—and happy May. Send us a textIn this episode of The Wall Street Skinny, we explore the escalating tension between former President Trump and Fed Chair Jerome Powell, how markets reacted, and what it reveals about the importance of central bank independence. Jen also breaks down "Operation Twist"—a lesser-known but powerful Fed tool—and explains how it differs from traditional rate cuts or quantitative easing.Next, we turn to the U.S. dollar, which recently hit a three-year low. Why does a falling dollar matter, and how does it impact everything from inflation to global trade dynamics? We explore the broader implications of currency devaluation in both the U.S. and China, unpack how exchange rates influence purchasing power and investor sentiment, and challenge popular internet takes that frame this as a one-sided currency war. Spoiler: weak currencies on both sides of a trade war mean everyone loses. Finally, we zoom in on Yale's rumored $6 billion sale of private equity stakes—about 15% of its endowment. What does this tell us about the liquidity crunch facing endowments? We explain how the secondaries market works, why endowments like Yale are turning to it, and the growing tension between LPs and PE firms over approvals and fees. For anyone curious about the inner workings of endowments, private equity, or portfolio rebalancing in volatile times, this is a must-listen.Sign up for our Talent Accelerator HERE today! Send us a textThis week, we break down the tension between Jerome Powell and Donald Trump—and what it actually means for monetary policy. If you listened to Powell's latest remarks at the Economic Club of Chicago, you may not have thought much of it, but anyone knows how to decode the Fed's deliberately vague words noticed unmistakably hawkish tone. We explain how to read between the lines of Fed speak, what it really means when the Fed prioritizes price stability over growth. We also get into why Trumps remarks on Truth Social led some to be concerned he's considering firing the Fed Chair... we discuss what that would mean for the credibility of U.S. markets. We dive into the economics of elite universities and the real impact of pulling federal research funding. We explain how endowments actually work, where that money goes, and why cutting research dollars isn't just about punishing a school—it risks gutting innovation across biotech, national defense, and the U.S. economy more broadly. Finally, we unpack the return of the Big Tech breakup debate. With Meta and Google back in court over antitrust issues, we explain what a corporate spinoff actually is, how it works, and why breaking up a giant like Meta might help your portfolio. From conglomerate discounts to split-offs and subsidiary IPOs, we walk through the corporate finance mechanics that could drive the next big move in tech.Sign up for our Talent Accelerator HERE today! Send us a textThere has been some speculation that the reason for "chaos in the bond markets" isn't loss of confidence in the US but rather the result of an unwind in "the basis trade" leading hedge funds to blow up and causing yield spreads to widen. To explore this theory we need to get super granular. We go deep into the relationship between cash bonds, futures, and interest rate swaps—and explain why so many market participants prefer the derivatives over buying Treasuries outright. We also walk through how structural leverage, repo financing, and margin exposure interact in this high-stakes trade, and why even a small dislocation can trigger major losses when trades are levered 50 to 1 (or more). Don't worry, we do keep it accessible—even if you've never heard of the Treasury Bond Basis book or you're not fluent in swaps. HOWEVER, this episode does assume a basic understanding of the bond markets and is definitely "advanced" for those not fluent in fixed income speak, so you might need to listen a few times like Kristen. Finally, we tackle what the Fed can and can't do in the face of this volatility, whether quantitative easing or regulatory changes could help, and why some argue the blowups are a symptom of something bigger—not the cause. Whether you're a market pro or just trying to understand what all the chaos in the headlines actually means, this episode gives you the tools to make sense of it.Sign up for our Talent Accelerator HERE today! Send us a textThis week on The Wall Street Skinny, we're diving headfirst into one of the most volatile weeks in recent memory—and we brought backup. After a whiplash-inducing reversal in the bond and equity markets, Jen and Kristen break down how the tariff announcements are rippling through rates, treasury auctions, and investor sentiment. From the Fed's shrinking balance sheet to the rising fear that the U.S. may be losing its “flight to quality” status, we unpack what's really happening beneath the headlines—and why the bond market might be the biggest canary in the coal mine. Then, we're joined by legendary investor Steve Eisman—yes, the Steve Eisman portrayed by Steve Carell in The Big Short—for a candid conversation about the state of the global economy, what everyone's missing in this moment of policy upheaval, and why he's not panicking. We get his take on the implications of Trump's tariffs, the fate of the U.S. dollar, and what it would actually take for the Fed to step in meaningfully. Steve also shares how he spotted the subprime crisis before anyone else, and why he's still staying cool in today's environment of uncertainty and anxiety.Whether you're an investor trying to make sense of the macro crosswinds or a Wall Street hopeful wondering how the system reacts in real time, this episode is packed with hard-earned perspective, market wisdom, and—yes—a few deep cuts from Battlestar Galactica. Stay tuned to hear how Steve really feels about being played by Steve Carell, and why sometimes the best strategy is to zoom out, shut off CNBC, and not sell your soul to the volatility gods.Sign up for our Talent Accelerator HERE today! Send us a textThis week on The Wall Street Skinny, we dive headfirst into the chaos that's been roiling the markets—because it's not just equities making headlines. Treasury auctions, bond yields, the dollar, and gold are all flashing red, and we break down exactly why. Kristen turns the mic to Jen, who spent nearly a decade on the interest rates desk at Morgan Stanley, Lehman, and Barclays, for an expert-level explainer on what's really happening beneath the surface of this market turmoil. We unpack the mechanics of recent treasury auctions, why foreign demand may be evaporating, and what that means for the U.S. government's ability to finance its ballooning debt. If you've ever glossed over headlines about yield curves or direct bidder participation, this episode connects the dots—from tariff policy and inflation fears to bond market dysfunction and reserve currency status. We also tackle the growing concerns around private equity and private credit, where volatility may be hidden under the surface due to lack of mark-to-market transparency. And while it may sound like doom and gloom (spoiler: Jen is not sleeping well), we're here to arm you with clarity—not panic. Whether you're a finance student trying to break in, a junior banker watching the headlines, or a PE associate wondering how this impacts your portfolio companies, this is your crash course in macro stress, treasury dynamics, and the unintended consequences of trade wars. Send us a textMarkets are in chaos, which is why on this week's episode Kristen and Jen ditch the interviews to break down what the hell is happening in markets right now. From tariffs to the dollar and everything in between, we're unpacking the massive moves in equities, the near-trigger of the circuit breaker, and what April 2nd — aka "Liberation Day" — really means. We dive deep into the economic mechanics behind tariffs — what they are, how they work, and why they're suddenly wreaking havoc. Jen gives a mini masterclass on the history of U.S. tariff policy, from Smoot-Hawley to modern-day trade wars, plus the ripple effects on the dollar and inflation. We talk stagflation risks, interest rates, retaliation from global trade partners, and whether this all signals a bigger shakeup — including real questions about the U.S. dollar as the world's reserve currency (along with some conspiracy theories about whether there's an ulterior motive for these moves). Finally, we pivot to some deal talk, focusing on the all-stock merger between Elon Musk's xAI and X (formerly Twitter). We break down what the deal actually means, why valuations seem... dubious, and how the whole thing serves as a real-world lesson in equity dilution. Bonus: we close with a little pickleball, skiing, and business etiquette chat — because it's not all macro mayhem all the time.Check out Public.com at the link http://public.com/wallstreetskinny Visit Vanta.com/wallstreet for $1,000 off Start your FREE TRIAL of Training The Street's Turbo Macros HEREOur Investment Banking and Private Equity Foundations course is LIVE: Or for our "Express Workout", our one hour top 5 technicals you must know for investment banking Masterclass, purchase for $49 HEREOur content is for informational purposes only. Send us a textIt's our special 150th episode!! We're reuniting with billionaire investor and CEO David Adelman (whom you may remember from our “Sports Investing 101” episode) for a deep dive into his multifaceted empire and brilliant business acumen. David's story is the stuff of legend. After making his first real estate investment with his bar mitzvah money at the age of 13, David ultimately rose to become CEO of Campus Apartments, followed by FS Investments and Darco Capital. First, David walks us through the key principles of investing in commercial real estate. He shares lessons about utilizing leverage, identifying niche markets, and paying attention to young trend-setters. We get a crash course on Real Estate Investment Trusts (“REIT”s), and learn how to avoid the pitfalls of chasing frothy markets. Then, by explaining the history of FS Investments, David walks us through being an early mover on delivering access to private capital investments to non-institutional investors. Next, David delves into his role as a partner in Harris Blitzer Sports Entertainment. He covers the nuances of sports investing vis-a-vis his ownership stakes in the Philadelphia '76ers, the New Jersey Devils, the Washington Commanders, and Premier League football team (a.k.a., soccer) Crystal Palace. But it's not just about the teams. David is laser-focused on his newest passion project: developing a world-class sports arena in Philadelphia, set to open in 2030. And last — but certainly not least — we discuss American Harvest, his luxury vodka brand, and the challenges of conquering the alcohol segment of consumer retail. Above all, David shares countless hard-fought lessons he's learned in business. Chief among them? “Don't be afraid to fail”. Send us a textIn this episode, we break down Season 2, Episode 6: "Short to the point of pain". The plot centers around FastAid, a company caught in the middle of a short squeeze reminiscent of GameStop's 2021 rally. We analyze the mechanics of short selling, how hedge funds and institutional traders manage risk in volatile positions, and why liquidity and market perception play crucial roles in determining price action. The episode highlights how traders react to crowded short positions and the ways in which misreads on positioning can lead to significant losses. The discussion also touches on market-making, bid-ask spreads, and the importance of accurately assessing order flow in a high-pressure trading environment.Jesse Bloom's reference to the Martingale betting strategy provides insight into flawed risk management approaches that have historically led to major financial losses. We break down how doubling down on losing trades can amplify risk, drawing parallels to hedge fund collapses and the dangers of overleveraging in financial markets. Additionally, the episode examines how narratives and sentiment, rather than fundamentals, often drive price action—echoing the GameStop short squeeze, where retail traders forced institutional investors to exit short positions at unsustainable prices. The FastAid trade also raises questions about the role of market makers, liquidity providers, and how short-term pricing inefficiencies can be exploited.Beyond the trading floor, the episode also explores the broader implications of professional decision-making in finance. Gus's career shift highlights the tension between public service and financial ambition, mirroring real-world debates about the role of finance professionals in shaping economic policy. Meanwhile, the discussion of legacy and career trajectory reflects how individuals in finance weigh personal fulfillment against external expectations. As the episode unfolds, it underscores the high-risk, high-reward nature of trading and the broader structural forces that shape financial markets.Check out Public.com at the link http://public.com/wallstreetskinnyOur Investment Banking and Private Equity Foundations course is LIVE: Or for our "Express Workout", our one hour top 5 technicals you must know for investment banking Masterclass, purchase for $49 HEREOur content is for informational purposes only. Send us a textSteve Kurz vaulted from early days at a worm poop startup (yes, that's a real thing) to the fast track of traditional finance, only to find himself with a front row seat to the Global Financial Crisis. Steve took the lessons he learned in traditional finance at legendary institutions like Lehman Brothers, Fortress, and River Birch and forged a new path along with his co-founder, Mike Novogratz, to found Galaxy: the Goldman Sachs of crypto. In today's episode, Steve explains to us his vision of the institutional future of crypto, the character of the crypto ecosystem emerging from the stress tests of the past few years (ahem, FTX), and explains the contemporary use cases for crypto that transcend the fragmented narrative of its early days. He also talks about building a family with an equally talented, successful, and driven partner.Steve's bold --- yet thoughtful --- entrepreneurial mindset should be an inspiration to anyone doubting themselves as they navigate their own career path.
