State Senator Alana DiMario of Narragansett is a mental health counselor who first won election in 2020. She's one of a number of progressive policy-oriented Democratic women lawmakers who have moved the General Assembly a bit to the left over the last decade. But Rhode Island still faces familiar challenges, including an uneven economy, a tough fiscal outlook and underperforming public schools. In the Rhode Island Senate, change will come at some point since the chamber's president, Dominick Ruggerio, is 76 and recovering from pneumonia. And there's a lot of uncertainty on the national scene, with the Trump administration promoting tariffs, threatening traditional U.S. alliances and remaking the federal government. So how can Rhode Island make progress on crucial issues amid this instability? And what does the future hold for the Rhode Island Senate? This week on Political Roundtable, I'm going in-depth with state Senator Alana DiMario.

This week is Thanksgiving week in the United States. On Thursday, most of us will sit down with friends, family, and other loved ones and share a large meal where we give thanks for whatever we're grateful for over the last year. In elementary school, we are taught to associate this holiday and its rituals with the religious separatists, or pilgrims, who migrated from England to what is today Plymouth, Massachusetts. We are taught that at the end of the fall harvest, the separatists sat down with their Indigenous neighbors to share in the bounty that the Wampanoag people helped them grow by teaching the separatists how to sow and cultivate crops like corn in the coastal soils of New England. In this BFW Revisited episode, Episode 291, we investigate the arrival of the Mayflower and the Indigenous world the separatists arrived in. We'll also explore how the Wampanoag and Narragansett peoples interacted with their new European neighbors and how they contended with the English people who were determined to settle on their lands. It's November, the time of year when we Americans get ready for the Thanksgiving holiday. Although the federal holiday we know and honor today came about in 1863, Thanksgiving is a day that many modern-day Americans associate with the Indigenous peoples and religious separatists of Plymouth, Massachusetts. What do we know about the Indigenous people the so-called Pilgrims interacted with? This month, in between our new episodes about Indigenous history, the Ben Franklin's World Revisited series explores the World of the Wampanoag. Daniel Donlan was born in Narragansett, Rhode Island but his family moved to southwest Florida when he was just five so pretty much considers himself a Florida man. He graduated from FGCU in 2021 and then taught high school algebra (where he was in charge of his students' DND club) for two years before deciding that was enough of that -- he now works at Gartner in Fort Myers. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome back to Finding the Throughline: Conversations about the Creative Process where today's guest is thriller author Vanessa Lillie, whose books include “Little Voices”, “For the Best,” and her newest book “Blood Sisters,” a thriller about two missing Indigenous women and the Cherokee archeologist for the Bureau of Indian Affairs who is searching for them which was a Good Morning America Buzz Pick and USA Today national bestseller. She's also the co-author of a fun 80s mystery romp “Young Rich Widows” as well as its sequel which is coming out next year, “Desperate Deadly Widows.” An Oklahoma native, Vanessa is an enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma living on Narragansett land in Rhode Island. Today I'm talking with Vanessa about the mindset side of writing, or what I call inner stuff–the thoughts, ideas, and attitudes that affect your work, even if you're not fully conscious of it, including: - Fighting erasure by weaving her family's story into her books - The thrill and the total fear of writing about your culture and worrying about getting it wrong - How Vanessa steadies herself when that anxiety crops up - Embracing the challenge of writing a page turner - Dealing with the fear that your current work isn't as good as your previous work - Seeing ideas as a butterfly that come and sit on your shoulder (from Elizabeth Gilbert's book “Big Magic” - Why it's so vital to get clear on why you are the right person to tell this story - Why being in her 40s feels like such a relief - Some frank talk about early motherhood–and why it was a theme in her first novel - Letting go of the idea that your success is within your control Connect with Vanessa on Instagram @vanessalillie For full show notes with links to everything we discuss, plus bonus photos!, visit katehanley.substack.com. We covered: - Making up stories as a form of escape - How a nagging sense of unhappiness in her 20s and 30s drove her to keep questioning what she should ‘do with her life' - The trip to the airport bookstore that awakened her desire to be an author - The joy–and terror–of having a dream - Using restlessness as a force for creative good - Channeling your childhood and your family history into fiction - The privilege of sharing stories with people who are interested - Why it's so easy to get into a lack mentality as an author - How Vanessa ended up back at square one–no publisher, no agent–after her second book came out - Finding the story you're meant to tell so that you're not “turning yourself into a pretzel to fit inside the system” - The tools that helped her get out of that lack mentality - Embracing chaos as a creative and honoring your particular process - Stepping out the capitalistic narrative that if you're not working 9-to-5, or really, 9-to-9, you're a slacker Connect with Vanessa on Instagram @vanessalillie. My second year there, I met Roland Henin on the beach in Narragansett. He was chef at a place called the Dunes Club, a big hotel; he commanded a kitchen the size of a football field with a crew of forty cooks, and he needed someone to cook staff meal.  Henin was from Lyon, the gastronomic capital of the Western world. He was an old-school French guy, trained in the European apprentice system. There was Zeus, and there was Roland, god of cooking. He knew everything. He taught me how to peel a tomato, how to cook a green vegetable properly, things no one had taken the time to show me before. He taught me how to make stock, how to roast and braise.  The staff meal cook is a low man in the kitchen hierarchy. You cook meals from scraps for people who work in the kitchen. But the Dunes Club was a high-end kitchen and Henin was a  classical French chef, so our scraps might be the butt from a tenderloin, and with that I learned how to make boeuf bourguignon. We'd have the legs left over from butchered chickens and with these I learned to make coq au vin. I turned lamb scraps into lamb navarin.   But, even more important, I learned how to make the vegetable side dishes, how to blanch green bean, how to make a gratin of cauliflower, how not to overcook broccoli. At the yacht club, I was used to adding a chemical oxidant that kept the vegetables bright. I though that's how everyone did it. Then Henin told me about the proper amount of water, and the proper amount of salt in that water, and how to cook and cool the vegetable. This was extraordinary to me, absolutely unique.    Henin taught me how to make a roux. Very, very, very important. How to make sauces, reduction sauces, and the clarification process that happens during reduction. The real fundamentals of cooking.  Staff meal was first about the fundamentals of cooking and how to work with by-products, using scraps to make something tasty, eye-appealing, and satisfying. But the message underlying that was "Can you be passionate about cooking at this level?" Staff meal. Only the staff sees it. If you can make great food for these people, create that habit, have that drive, that sincerity, and keep that with you and take it to another level in the staff meal, then someday you'll be a great chef. Maybe."

From Bangor to Back Bay, New Englanders endure in baseball matters. And life. The team's history has intersected with the history of Boston and well beyond it, through the Curse of the Bambino, the military service of Ted Williams during World War II, and the Boston Marathon bombing. The Fenway Effect chronicles these stories and others that have built the incredible saga of the Boston Red Sox.  How did Cheers depict the passion of Boston's sports fans? Why is Narragansett beer so important to New England?  What did the Boston press really think about Red Sox owner Harry Frazee selling Babe Ruth to the Yankees?  Even Yankees fans will tip their caps to the rich impact of the Red Sox on music, movies, branding, broadcasting, and more. Plus, there's a chapter focusing on the oral history of Red Sox fans, some of whom share anecdotes that are funny, insightful, and heartwarming."
