This week on Sinica, I chat with Jeffrey Ding, author of Technology and the Rise of Great Powers, a book that argues that a nation's ability to invent foundational technologies matters ultimately less in its overall national power than its ability to diffuse those "general purpose technologies," like electricity, digital technology, the internet, and — in the age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution — Artificial Intelligence. I ask Jeff whether he thinks that China, with its powerful tech companies and its new enthusiasm for open source, may at last be closing what his book identifies as a diffusion deficit.2:19 – Jeff's argument for the power of diffusion in technological leadership6:07 – China's diffusion deficit 12:09 – Institutional factors that affect technology diffusion, and how culture can also play a role 19:49 – China's successes in (non-GPT) diffusion 24:29 – China's open source push 29:55 – Discussing He Pengyu's piece on semiconductors 32:19 – How Jeff might tweak his chapter on China in a second edition of Technology and the Rise of Great Powers Paying It Forward: Matt Sheehan of the Carnegie Endowment for International PeaceRecommendations:Jeff: The TV series The Pitt (2025 - ); and James Islington's The Will of the Many Kaiser: The album Perpetual Change by Jon Anderson and The Band Geeks; and Steven Wilson's new album, The OverviewSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Other topics include Geoff Downes' statement about future Yes touring and album releasing, first impressions of the Close to the Edge Super Deluxe Edition and Jon Anderson & The Band Geeks' Live - Perpetual Change (the audio tracks, anyway), and more.

Everything is relative, To the state of my mind, heart, and soul. My ability to remain in calm acceptance, Is my only means of control. ☉ You heard it: after Merc goes direct tomorrow, all planets are full steam ahead until Pluto goes retro on May 2. Who knows what we are in for next, with Mars coming out of chaos to stake a new claim in Aries - the masculine getting more masculine - and Venus settling into Taurus for a bit, the feminine getting more feminine? It will be an interesting rest of the month that could get pretty hectic on the inside and may be best enjoyed from the outside (reminds me of another song maybe for next week). Another thing about Saturn in Pisces, though, besides signifying the dissolution of old forms, let's also keep in mind that it is forming (Saturn) new dreams (Pisces) that will be birthed in 2026 when he emerges out of foggy Pisces. So, as our song for this week and the mantra both state, the only constant is change, and no sooner does one form fall apart than another form takes its place. Everything so temporary may make us question whether anything is worth our time and effort anyway. The answer to that will be different with different people at different times, largely depending on how much of a good time they are having versus how much pain they are in. As the source of all pain is the resistance to change and evolution, living in calm acceptance of what is reduces pain, allows for more joy, and will result in more pleasant experiences, leading us to feel that life really is worth living. Got that? It's the same as fighting the flow, which will wear you down and out, while going with it will be a fun ride. So, let's lay our burdens down, cut out the bickering, and get with it. Life is too short to stay bummed!
Carl Olson joins Don to discuss the similarities between Andy Stanley's recent Unconditional conference and the ongoing Catholic Synod on Synodality. In both instances leaders claim to want to "journey together with people," especially those with same sex attraction, without bringing theology or doctrine into the conversation. It is a fool's errand.Links to go with the show:Synodality, Soteriology, and “Sharing the journey”Welcome to the Church of Perpetual Change and Confusion Can Ministry be Unhinged from Theology? When Being Affirming Isn't Loving

The Far Middle episode 69 celebrates the 69-win NBA season by the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers, a record for victories in a season that would stand until the 72 wins by Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen’s 1995-96 Chicago Bulls team. The Lakers' star-studded lineup (including Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor, Pat Riley, and Jerry West) not only won the NBA championship that year but also 33 straight games—a record that stands today. Staying in the late 60s and early 70s era, Nick discusses the final years of Pablo Picasso’s life, a colorful and expressive point in the artist’s perpetual changing career when he was massively prolific. Also at that time, in 1969, French writer Henri Charrière published Papillon, which Nick highly recommends. The book would be made into a movie starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman the year after the Lakers' 69-win championship season. And just as critics panned Picasso’s works at the end of his career, they similarly panned Papillon’s screen adaptation. Nick says to be your own expert when it comes to film and literature. Nick then transitions into an overview of the CNX Foundation Mentorship Academy, which is nearing the start of its second year. Nick describes the Academy’s mission, its first year, and an exciting summer that most recently included a cookout with prospective second-year students. Follow Academy updates at nickdeiuliis.com and at cnx.com. Staying on education, Nick next discusses students, parents, and taxpayers finally starting to hold colleges accountable for the quality of education delivered during the pandemic. Nick closes with a one-of-a-kind, multi-part Far Middle connection going back to the early 1970s and linking Papillon, Pablo Picasso, and “winging-it.”
Produced by Jeffrey Crecelius and Wayne Hall Next week's YMP episode will be a proper tribute to Alan White so please add your contributions in the comments section below. This week, rather than a ‘standard' episode we thought it would be appropriate to re-play our interview with Alan from January 2020. He was in fine form, as always and it was a joy to speak to him. ‘Legendary' is an entirely apt description of this true gentleman, extraordinary musician and friend to all he encountered. R.I.P. Alan. Original interview episode show notes: Mark and I have ticked off another of our top ambitions on the podcast by speaking to Yes drum legend, Alan White. We cover a number of different topics and Alan is absolutely delightful, as I'm sure you know. For the first time in ages, I also managed to do a news catch-up which features a few highlights from around the social webs in recent days and/or weeks and do listen out for a couple of new items. I hope you enjoy the whole episode! What did Alan think of From A Page? What is Alan's favourite Yes album??What is Relayer going to be like to play live in 2020? Listen to the episode and let us know what you think.
Change is everywhere. That was true prior to the pandemic. But that was nothing compared to now. In the past year and a half we've experienced (and are experiencing) massive change as we try to adapt to ever-evolving social realities and upheavals. Spinning is not a way to see clearly. We are becoming increasingly polarized … Continue reading Perpetual change and controversy?

Perpetual Change (May 24, 2020) by Edina Morningside Community Church
Today on the show we’re talking a bit about exercise, a bit about spirituality, a bit about indigenous cultures and quite a bit about a very select group of people who choose to run around and around an extended city block in New York City for not just days but weeks at a time!My guest is Sanjay Rawal, an award winning documentary maker based in New York City. We’re talking about his film 3100: Run and Become, a beautiful and intriguing documentary about the Self Transcendence 3100 Mile Race and the role that running plays in personal growth. But as you’ll hear the film is just a starting point for a deeper, wide ranging and insightful conversation about the many different paths we can take to be our best self.During our conversation Sanjay and I discuss:The Self Transcendence 3100 Mile Race - What is it and how did it come to be?Who enters it and why?How to manage your mind to run for 52 days.Finding flow through exertion and contemplation through movementStaying in the moment to manage challenge and hardshipHow striving towards a goal contributes to our wellbeingThe role of running in traditional culturesFinding meaning and purpose through serving others. This conversation and Sanjay’s film has completely reframed exercise and exertion for me. Rather than dwell on discomfort and challenge I am finding the joy in exertion and the peace in each moment, even when it hurts. Thanks to our partner PAFOW20 Sydney for this episode of the podcast. The one in which I share my family's brush with bushfires on New Years Eve 2019 and then explore the effects of calamity and catastrophe on children with psychologist and author Karen Young.Welcome back to the Potential Psychology Podcast and our eighth season of the show. It's great to be back. We've had a turbulent start to 2020 in Australia. We're no strangers to bushfire but as of as of 14 January 2020, fires this season have burnt an estimated 186,000 square kilometres (72,000 square miles), destroyed 2,779 homes) and killed at least 34 people. It's estimated that anywhere up to one billion animals have also died as a result of the fires.News coverage of the disaster was global with graphic images of fire ravaged communities broadcast on every conceivable platform. It was all we could talk about. For weeks eastern parts of the country were swathed in smoke and for many communities lives have been turned upside down. After our own escape from the fire affected NSW South Coast early in January I was keen to talk to an expert on the impact of these events on kids in particular. Karen Young, psychologist, author and expert on kids and anxiety joined me on the show and during our conversation I asked:How should we talk to kids about catastrophic events? What's a 'normal' reaction to trauma in kids - and what's not? What happens in kids' minds when exposed to catastrophe or news of catastrophe?Does age make a difference to the impact and how we talk to them about these events? How can we as parents and carers help? When should we worry? And if we're worried - what should we do?Karen shares her wisdom, knowledge and tips for parents and carers. She reminds us that kids are resilient and that our role is make them feel safe, even in the moments when we're not feeling so safe ourselves.Join me as we kick off a new season and a new year with a personal conversation about fires, fear and the role of a parent. Thanks to our partner for this episode PAFOW20 Sydney. Join me at PAFOW20 Sydney on March 3 & 4 2020 to Honour the Human Experience in the Age of AI & Perpetual Change. For a full transcript, guest profile, expert tips and the resources mentioned in this episode, visit potential.com.au/podcast or join the conversation on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter

Family and friends of longtime guitarist Van McLain are coming together to aid in his recovery from complications after contacting the WEST NILE VIRUS in 2015. The goal of the fundraiser and silent auction benefitting Van McLain is to step in where his insurance is no longer covering the costs to continue rehabilitating him with occupational and physical therapy to a point where he can walk again. In August of 2015 – Van experienced “flu-like” symptoms that got increasingly worse throughout the week After experiencing slurred speech and a rash, Onnie drove Van to the emergency room where he began to show severe symptoms. They did a lumbar puncture and the results were meningitis. He was taken to ICU and it was discovered he also had encephalitis. They kept him comfortable. Then his blood work finally came back after 7 days from being tested at several labs confirming a bizarre diagnosis- WEST NILE VIRUS. He was having trouble breathing so they intubated him, but after 10 days a decision was made to place a trachea tube and then a feeding tube. At this point he was in and out consciousness. He remained in ICU until the end of September then went to a long term acute hospital. Van remained in several hospitals with pneumonia more times that can be remembered, pulmonary problems, difficulty breathing, many tests and procedures. After a year of treatments for the West Nile Virus, Van began to move past the initial virus stage, BUT – the virus had weakened him. He had his trachea tube removed March 2017 but continues to have respiratory problems and pulmonary issues that resulted from his condition. Van is now at a point where he needs intense therapy, transportation and high-tech equipment so he can get stronger like we have been told he can! Now his family and friends are working together to help raise funds so he can rehabilitate his motor skills and strengthening issues. After over two years of trying to recover, he is now at a point where rehab can help him walk again. Who: Guitarist Van McLain What: Join Van's family and friends for a fundraiser and silent auction benefitting Van McLain.
