Meet Khadijah Robinson, the founder and CEO of Aqua Waterproof Headwear, a line of waterproof turbans and head wraps. Khadijah's journey began with a personal challenge: trying to protect her hair extensions while snorkelling on vacation. Frustrated by the lack of suitable products, she created her own solution—waterproof headwear that is both stylish and functional!Khadijah faced numerous setbacks, from struggling to find the right fabric to losing money when her first manufacturer went bankrupt. Her determination paid off when she found a supportive seamstress and, eventually, a new manufacturer. Eventually, Khadijah's product gained traction and, against the odds, she auditioned for the Buy It Now show on Prime Video earning her a spot on the Buy It Now Amazon store, along with a $20,000 cash prize. You can watch Aqua Waterproof Headwear's episode on the Buy it Now show titled: The Panel Get Confused - And They Like It. Tune in and get inspired by the real stories behind the entrepreneurs and products featured on Buy It Now. You can find winning products on the Buy It Now Store. Follow TISB: Behind the Buy on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts and make sure to watch Buy It Now on Prime Video. In this episode you'll learn: (03:14) Khadijah's idea for waterproof turbans and headwraps came from a frustrating personal experience while on vacation. She needed a way to keep her hair dry while snorkelling but struggled with the limitations of regular hats and shower caps. (04:19) Khadijah faced significant challenges in bringing her product to life, from struggling to find waterproof fabric to working through multiple prototypes. It took years of effort before she had a working design. (04:49) A chance encounter with a past acquaintance, Lele, a seamstress who had designed Khadijah's prom dress, turned out to be pivotal. Lele helped Khadijah with fabric sourcing, prototypes, and navigating her first manufacturer meetings. (07:18) Even though Khadijah was confident in the demand for her product, she still conducted extensive market research by surveying friends and visiting hair stores to confirm the need for waterproof headwear.(07:46) Khadijah describes the overwhelming sense of gratitude when she made her product live and started receiving orders. It reaffirmed that her hard work was paying off, even though the process had been stressful and uncertain. (08:17) After her original manufacturer went bankrupt, Khadijah didn't give up on her business. Instead, she used the setback as fuel to push harder and ultimately find a new, better manufacturer. (11:25) For the "Buy It Now" show, Khadijah practiced tirelessly to perfect her pitch. She used flashcards, rehearsed in front of a camera, and worked on her delivery to ensure she'd make a strong impression on the judges.(19:40) Winning the $20,000 prize not only boosted Khadijah's confidence but also helped her expand her product line, restock inventory, and invest in broader marketing efforts, including reaching more diverse audiences.

Born and raised in Arizona, Dave Dickert sharpened his operational skills in the restaurant industry for 15 years in Southern California prior to co-founding Branded Bills in 2016. He is driven by a passion for building companies that leave a memorable experience with the customer, and by the unique opportunity to build a brand that is disrupting the standards of premium customized apparel. Dave is an avid traveler and outdoorsman and best enjoys these activities alongside his wife and two young kiddos. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn:How Dave Dickert and three friends built Branded BillsReasons why Dave was looking to leave the restaurant industryHow the four co-owners share the business and divide rolesWhy making conscious decisions about your brand mattersThe power saying “no” has to define your brandThe key ingredients for customer satisfaction and retentionWhy equal care must be taken to retain employeesMartin's advice on business continuityHow Dave protects his family time from too much work takeoverIn this episode…Dave Dickert emerged from the restaurant industry to be one of four co-founders of the company Branded Bills. The four friends have managed to retain co-ownership while building a successful brand for seven years now, a true testament to cooperation. Dave shares some of the reasons for that success with Martin.A key factor in their business growth was that every one of the four friends naturally fell into a role they felt strong in, there were no “let's draw straws for CEO” moments. They each play to their strengths. Importantly, they also understand exactly what the business is within the headwear industry, and what it isn't. Dave breaks down exactly what is so powerful and necessary about saying no.In this episode of What CEOs Talk About, host Martin Hunter and guest Dave Dickert discuss the often hard lessons Dave learned in the restaurant industry, why checking yourself and your role along the way is important to do, and why Dave believes that building a brand goes hand in hand with experiential purchases. They address what customer retention looks like, the importance of quality, and balancing fatherhood with business. Building your brand reflects your values and the choices you make about serving your customers, and Dave has valuable insight to share.Resources mentioned in this episode:URGEOContact email: info@urgeo.comMartin Hunter on LinkedInDave Dickert on LinkedInBranded BillsBranded Bills CustomBranded Bills on InstagramResources recommended for CEOs and leaders:Monday.comBambooHRSponsor for this podcast...This podcast is brought to you by URGEO, Operational excellence in action through the Are you Ready Program! Are you READY to free up your time?Optimize your Organization?Grow revenue and reduce costs?Build your leadership team?Partnering with organizations like yours, we work with you to implement our proven methodology designed to transform your operations, while providing accurate advice and support for real success.Translating strategy into frontline operations, URGEO helps leaders and the people within their organization excel at safe, on-time, on-budget and on-spec delivery. Varsity Headwear was founded by two brothers from Norway, Alex and Seb, with the goal of creating the perfect cap. From the beginning they have focused on perfecting the fit, feel and fabrics of their caps. Relentless in the pursuit of their mission, they have developed beautifully made, quality caps to withstand the test of time. The co-founders share a love for classic baseball caps but could never find one with the quality and shape they desired. In 2013, Oslo became home to the brand's first shop, selling mostly to friends and family who served as test pilot customers. They work closely with their suppliers and partners to bring you the most premium and cutting edge fabrics sourced from some of the world's most luxurious and sustainable mills. In this episode of the MenswearStyle Podcast we interview Sebastian Adams and Alexander Adams, Co-Founders of Varsity Headwear about their careers and the founding story of their brand. They found a gap in the market after being unable to purchase a baseball cap that didn't feature brand logos and sports team badges. Our host Peter Brooker also talks to the brothers about their love for baseball caps, how they source high quality fabrics, how the global pandemic impacted the business, and the Vicuña cap which is so exclusive it doesn't have a price tag. Whilst we have your attention, be sure to sign up to our daily MenswearStyle newsletter here. In this episode of The Shetler Show, Anthony Shetler catches up with Rod James. Rod started skating with his twin brother and older brother, and has been skating for over 20 years now. Rod James tells Anthony why he didn’t take to traditional sports, but fell in love with skating. Rod and his brother were especially into art work, and loved seeing the skate deck graphics. After moving to Cali, Rod James (who thought he was always gonna rep east coast only) started working in the skate industry. Rod goes into exactly why he was “feeling it” in Cali, and why he decided to stay out there. Anthony Shetler and Rod James describe why skateboarders can connect with each other all over the world, simply by noticing that the other person has a skateboard. Rod James with works with several brands in skateboarding, and actively looks for ways to help the skateboarding industry. Rod encourages those in the skate industry to start their OWN brands, especially pro skaters. They talk about what it means to own your own skateboard brand, on the job training, and how there is “no rule book” when it comes to having your own skateboarding company. Anthony Shetler and Rod James talk to the skate industry directly, and give their own experience with giving back to the skate scene they love.
