Paul tells the church at Galatia, “Yall were running the race with all you had, exerting all the effort you could, but something happened and it has hindered your running.” What happened? Circumcision. It's hard to run when you've had a knife cut into private part! That is a lot of pain and it takes a little while to heal up! Paul uses two words in the Greek to explain what he means by “hinder” but we don't fully grasp it in the English translations. Check out this podcast to see what Paul means and ask. Yourself this question, “Am I giving my all for Jesus? For the kingdom? Or is something hindering me from fully serving him?

[This episode originally aired on September 27, 2022] In the Buddhist tradition there's a lot of talk about practice, which is connected with the paramita of exertion • practice is something that you do over and over again, and as you do so, hopefully you get better and better, and develop more and more understanding and sophistication about what you're doing • in the paramita of exertion, the development is from a kind of self-conscious or imposed approach to a more natural approach, even reaching a point where exertion is actually joyful • instead of making a division between when we're having fun on the one hand and doing hard work on the other, the paramita of exertion is pointing to something almost upside down from that • it's suggesting that continuing our exertion in the midst of pain or obstacles or setbacks or disappointments actually increases our happiness and well-being • exertion is just keeping going, and delighting in that keeping going.

How much religion among many members of churches consists of nothing but church rituals! They belong to their church. They are baptized, married, buried in at the church, and preached to on Sundays by her ministers, but the great doctrines of truth have no place in their hearts and only a little influence on their lives. Is the religion of these people real Christianity? No, it is Churchianity – and nothing more! If your religion is real and has been given by the Holy Spirit, it must be in your heart. It must sway the affections. It must lead the will. It must direct the tastes. It must influence the choices and decisions. It must fill the deepest, lowest, inmost seat in your soul. Is this your Christianity? Real Christianity will cause a person to glory in Christ as the Redeemer, the Deliverer, the Priest, and the Friend – without whom he would have no hope at all. It will produce confidence in Him, love toward Him, delight in Him, and comfort in Him as the Mediator, the Food, the Light, the Life, and the Peace of the soul. This Christianity will produce in the person who has it repentance, faith, hope, love, humility, spirituality, kindness, self-denial, unselfishness, forgiveness, temperance, truthfulness, brotherly kindness, patience, and forbearance. Is this your religion? About the Author John Charles Ryle (1816-1900) graduated from Eton and Oxford and then pursued a career in politics, but due to lack of funds, he entered the clergy of the Church of England. He was a contemporary of Spurgeon, Moody, Mueller, and Taylor and read the great theologians like Wesley, Bunyan, Knox, Calvin, and Luther. These all influenced Ryle's understanding and theology. Ryle began his writing career with a tract following the Great Yarmouth suspension bridge tragedy, where more than a hundred people drowned. He gained a reputation for straightforward preaching and evangelism. He travelled, preached, and wrote more than 300 pamphlets, tracts, and books, including Expository Thoughts on the Gospels, Principles for Churchmen, and Christian Leaders of the Eighteenth Century. Ryle used the royalties from his writing to pay his father's debts, but he also felt indebted to that ruin for changing the direction of his life. He was recommended by Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli to be Bishop of Liverpool where he ended his career in 1900.
This week the coronial inquest into the death of Manly Sea Eagle Keith Titmuss concluded, raising questions about whether sporting codes are doing enough to prevent heat related illness. Titmuss collapsed at a training session in 2020, and died shortly after in hospital. What could have been done differently in this case and do sporting organisations need to take heat related injuries more seriously? Featured: Ethan Rix, journalist, ABC News. It's pulmonary hypertension month on JHLT: The Podcast! The JHLT Digital Media Editors explore two PVD-related manuscripts from the November issue of The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation. Digital Media Editor Marty Tam, MD, assistant professor in the division of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Michigan, hosts this episode. First, hear from first author Zvonimir Rako, MD, on his team's study “Clinical and functional relevance of right ventricular contraction patterns in pulmonary hypertension.” The right ventricle (RV) has a complex contraction pattern. For patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH), right ventricular to pulmonary artery (RV-PA) coupling is important when considering how the RV responds to increases in afterload. Uncoupling occurs with progressive disease and the degree of uncoupling can be derived from pressure–volume loop analysis as the ratio between end-systolic and arterial elastance (Ees/Ea). In this exploratory analysis of the prospective EXERTION study, the authors determined the relationship between RV contraction patterns and RV-PA coupling in patients with PH. They also correlated RV contraction patterns to hemodynamic risk profiles. For details on what the study found about how PH programs can use the results in their practice, listen to the discussion in the episode. Next, the editors explored the study “Impact of sex on outcome after pulmonary endarterectomy for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.” The podcast hosted first author Justin C.Y. Chan, MD, MPhil and senior author Marc de Perrot, MD, MSc, FRCSC. The impact of sex on long-term outcomes after pulmonary endarterectomy for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) has remained unclear. The authors of this study sought to evaluate the early and long-term outcomes after pulmonary endarterectomy to see if sex had an impact on the risk of residual pulmonary hypertension and need for targeted PH medical therapy. For details on what this retrospective single-center study found, including the mechanics of sex differences and the potential changes to clinical approach, check out the episode. Our father among the saints, Porphyrios, is a most beloved elder of our day. The Lord poured out incredible love to the world through him. His heart was on fire with love of Christ and by God's grace we have been left with his life and witness as inspiration for us unworthy ones of these last days. This excerpt from "Wounded by Love" exhibits his insatiable love for Christ, his wounded yet healed heart. This reading is from "Wounded by Love: The Life and the Witness of Saint Porphyrios", pp. 107-109 & 96-99 -BUY Wounded by Love here: https://www.holycross.org/products/wounded-by-love-the-life-and-the-wisdom-of-elder-porphyrios -FIND an Orthodox parish and monastery near you: https://orthodoxyinamerica.org/ _______ St. Porphyrios writes: Whoever wants to become a Christian must first become a poet. That's what it is! You must suffer. You must love and suffer—suffer for the one you love. Love makes effort for the loved one. She runs all through the night; she stays awake; she stains her feet with blood in order to meet her beloved. She makes sacrifices and disregards all impediments, threats and difficulties for the sake of the loved one. Love towards Christ is something even higher, infinitely higher. When you love Christ you exert yourself, but in blessed exertions. You suffer, but with joy. You make prostrations and pray because these are things you crave for with divine craving. They are at once pain and longing, passion and yearning and exaltation and joy and love. Prostrations and vigils and fasting are exertions which are made for the Beloved, exertions in order to experience Christ. But this exertion is not made under duress; you don't protest and rebel. Whatever you do under compulsion is very harmful both to you and to the work you are doing. The pressure and coercion provoke opposition. Exertion for Christ, true desire for Christ, is love, sacrifice and dissolution of self. This is also how David felt: My soul longs and faints for the courts of the Lord. My soul longs with craving and melts away out of love for God (Psalm 83:2). Christ is joy, the true light, happiness. Christ is our hope. Our relation to Christ is love, eros, passion, enthusiasm, longing for the divine. Christ is everything. He is our love. He is the object of our desire. This passionate longing for Christ is a love that cannot be taken away. This is where joy flows from. Qur task is to attempt to find a way to enter into the light of Christ. Christ is life, the source of life, the source of joy, the source of the true light, everything. Whoever loves Christ and other people truly lives life. Life without Christ is death; it is hell, not life. That is what hell is—the absence of love. Life is Christ. Love is the life of Christ. Either you will be in life or in death. It's up to you to decide. The Christian feels for everyone, he wants all to be saved, all to taste the Kingdom of God. That is Christianity: through love for our brother to arrive at love for God. That is what preoccupies me. I try to find ways to love Christ. This love is never sated. However much you love Christ, you always think that you don't love Him and you long all the more to love him. And without being aware of it, you go higher and higher! _______ Orthodox Wisdom is dedicated to sharing the writings and lives of the Saints of the Orthodox Church. Mental and physical exertion both take a lot of energy, but we often forget how much learning costs our energy reserves.Back in 2008, I went to the first Illustration Master Class for a week in June, and it upleveled my artwork forever.Being in that environment was inspiring and kept my brain working hard not only during that week but for the following two weeks, too. I would close my eyes and still be processing ideas and practicing new techniques in my mind. My dreams were filled with these processes, and all of that made me ravenous!Mental exertion takes a lot of physical effort in our brains, but until I experienced that week, this reality hadn't even occurred to me. Creating new neural connections takes an enormous amount of energy. One way to take advantage of all the hard work your mind does when learning a new skill is to surround yourself with others who are equally excited about the topic you're learning about. There is something energetically strong about immersing yourself in an environment with others who possess the attitude and skill you desire, and who are able to see you and hold you as one of them. This helps you recreate your identity more quickly because you have that image reflected back to you by a community of others who have gone on the journey with you. It's also super motivating. Episode 1864. Exertion, solution. Watch what happens when you tell your team the answer is exertion. You know it's true. It's always the solution to every team and individual problem. Exert more in mind, body and soul. Problem solved. Then watch what happens to you; whether you're in charge or not. They call it complacency, comfort zone and all the internet BS they use to describe outcomes. How many times do you have to hear it, see it, share it, post it, comment on it? All you're really doing is describing the outcome. You're not telling anybody how to do it. I've got to face adversity, but how about you teach me how to do it? You got to take some risks. SHOW ME HOW TO DO IT. …They use all the leadership words, but avoid the truth. Next-level work, exertion, training, is what is required to face hell. Blunt Talk Podcast is guaranteed TO LIFT. The importance of assessing Rate on Exertion with Shen-Hammer Pulse Diagnosis:Pulse diagnosis can be scary for lots of practitioners; not everyone has been fortunate enough to spend years deep diving into the intricacies and subtleties, and often practitioners don't even spend much time checking pulse at all. In this ShopTalk episode, I detail one of the most important assessments on the pulse, explain its significance, and detail how to do it. And it is EASY and QUICK to perform. If you treat pain, emotional issues like depression/anxiety/panic, or complaints like insomnia, dizziness/vertigo, or specialize in internal medicine conditions like chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, POTS, and autoimmune disorders, you will find this assessment super valuable. You can also check this link https://rossrosen.shenrosen.com/rate-on-exertion-assessment-demo/ to see a demonstration of me performing it. If you grew up in 90's you probably know what it meant to be “sweatin” somebody. It's something like liking someone, and doing all sorts of things to make sure they know you like them. You are after them. And you might do a little too much to make sure they notice you. What if you were just as committed, just as passionate, willing to go just as far, when it comes to sweatin' your truth? I imagine your body would move in all sorts of ways. I figure you would get in tune with others around you. I know you would not hide. You would let us see what you are finding, because you would know that we would find ourselves in it too. Here I'm sharing a beautiful interview with Maria Bauman, Artistic Director of MBDance. Her bio starts with the words: “Muscles. Beads of sweat. Exertion. Inversion. Carving out selfhood.” She is “a woman dancer, a person of color, a southern not-quite-belle who grew up poor, and a queer person.” Her “choreography for MBDance is based on physical and emotional power, desire for equity, and fascination with intimacy” She asserts that “the popular notion of a ‘neutral body,' often described in contemporary dance classes, does not exist in her experience.” Instead she creates “from storied bodies, mythological bodies, bodies-in-creation, and bodies-as-manifestos.” In the previous episode of the podcast I invited you into a conversation with the great Jawole Zollar, founder of Urban Bush Women. Here I am inviting you into a conversation with one of her mentees. I met Maria while working with UBW and I have not met too many other people who are such kindred spirits. We go about our work in very different ways. But there is spiritual alignment, a commitment to the body, a passion for culture and a promise to community that makes me feel like Maria and I are here serving the same force, aiming to fulfill a similar purpose. I encourage you to listen with care and to let yourself be inspired. I invite you to get after your truth with all of your spirit and to dance in such a way that the truth sweats out of you. Enjoy!
If you are prone to getting a headache or a migraine after a workout, a run, or even after sneezing, you may be experiencing what's known as an exertion headache. Exertion headaches are more commonly seen in men but can affect anyone and are a source of fear in frustration in those who experience them. Today's episode breaks down the mechanisms behind exertion headaches and explains how they relate to our tension thresholds and our neck health.
It's the start of a new era, as Omar and Eric sit down for episode 201. In this conversation, the two pick up where they left off from episode 200, tackling the Cult's questions that were too good, and too deep to cover last week. Specifically, we discuss how to compare the potential effects of dissimilar variables on hypertrophy, such as sleep, protein, and creatine using research. Further, we field questions on how you measure progress and deal with plateaus, and whether higher frequency training can provide unique advantages. 00:00 Introduction to a new era of Iron Culture (and reading comments) 15:11 Start of Q&A. In the Buddhist tradition there's a lot of talk about practice, which is connected with the paramita of exertion • practice is something that you do over and over again, and as you do so, hopefully you get better and better, and develop more and more understanding and sophistication about what you're doing • in the paramita of exertion, the development is from a kind of self-conscious or imposed approach to a more natural approach, even reaching a point where exertion is actually joyful • instead of making a division between when we're having fun on the one hand and doing hard work on the other, the paramita of exertion is pointing to something almost upside down from that • it's suggesting that continuing our exertion in the midst of pain or obstacles or setbacks or disappointments actually increases our happiness and wellbeing • exertion is just keeping going, and delighting in that keeping going.
