Face the Music: An Electric Light Orchestra Song-By-Song Podcast
Peter Gabriel, the unique and flamboyant lead singer of Genesis, decided to part ways with the band in 1975 after the conclusion of their tour supporting their 1974 album, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. That album had been a major hit and, like the one before it, almost broke them on U.S. radio. With Gabriel gone, the search was on for a new singer, and much of the British press thought the band should just call it quits. Instead, after a fruitless search, they settled on drummer Phil Collins, who had sung the odd song on some of their previous albums. A Trick of the Tail was a hit in the UK and, surprisingly, did moderately well in the U.S. as well.
My guest for this episode is repeat offender Dave Kerzner, making his third appearance on the show. In his first, we discussed one of his all-time favorite albums, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis. That was a few years ago and he hinted about a Lamb tribute album in the works featuring performers such as Francis Dunnery (It Bites), Nick D'Virgilio (Big Big Train), Billy Sherwood (Yes), Steve Rothery (Marillion), and others. That album is now a reality, with the recent release of Sonic Elements' IT - A 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis. Dave was kind enough to tell me the hows and whys of the new album, which was obviously a painstaking labor of love. It's well crafted, honors the source material, and includes a few pleasant surprises. Find out more about Dave's work at davekerznermusic.com and sonicelements.bandcamp.com. Willkommen zur Fortsetzung von "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway". The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway". "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" wurde am 22. Peter Gabriel verließ nach diesem Album die Band, was "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" zu seinem Vermächtnis macht. The three-piece version of Genesis became increasingly popular from 1978 onward, with 1986's Invisible Touch being their biggest yet. Phil Collins managed a successful solo career starting in 1981 and was popular enough that Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks expected him to leave. However, he came back for one more album, We Can't Dance, in 1991. It again spawned a number of hits, but also was their longest since The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.

Interview by Kris PetersMr. Big have been captivating music lovers since their inception in 1988 with an irresistible blending of rock and blues music that is as infectious as it is beautiful to hear. After releasing their self-titled debut album in 1989, Mr. Big - (vocalist Eric Martin, guitarist Paul Gilbert and bassist Billy Sheehan) achieved universal breakthrough success with the follow-up Lean Into It, an album that spawned the smash single To Be With You that set Mr. Big on a collision course with destiny that has continued unabated ever since.A combination of musical brilliance, integrity and genuine love for their craft has allowed Mr. Big to perform for over three decades, but, sadly, all good things must come to an end and for Mr. Big that ending is delivered in the form of The Big Finish touring extravaganza that has wound its way around the world at select destinations from last year, winding up - at this stage - in Romania on August 27.But in true Mr. Big style, the band was not content to leave their fans with only the memories of their final live performances, but also announced their tenth studio album - appropriately named Ten - would be unleashed with a strong nod to the entire history of the band in a musical farewell that promises an eternal gateway into the sonic sensibilities of a band who may never be rivalled. With the release of Ten rapidly approaching its global birth on July 12, HEAVY had the honour of sitting down for a one-on-one with founding member Billy Sheehan to talk about the album, Mr. Big's legacy and more."It's our 10th studio record," Sheehan proudly affirmed. "There have been a lot of other records. The first time we played in Japan, we had a wonderful time. And they knew we wouldn't be coming back until the next record - which was going to be a cycle that happens - so they wanted a live record. And we didn't really have the facilities because we were on tour with Rush in America, and so the sound man took a DAT tape, a digital audio tape that they don't have many more that cost $7.95, and put it in and hit record on our show with no multi-track, no fixes, no overdubs, no nothing. So our recording budget for the whole show was $7.95 (laughs). That tape became the first Raw Like Sushi. I think in Korea it's sold like 350,000 units. I don't know how many in Japan, but I hope we recouped our investment (laughs). But it was kind of cool that it was completely real and no fixes, no turning the audience up or any of those cheaters that you can do. So we've done a lot of records. And there's a million bootlegs, too. There was a great bootleg store in Japan - I think they're long gone now - selling CDs, and they had the most amazing set of bootlegs you could imagine. I got the Band of Gypsys, Jimi Hendrix demos and rehearsals. I got Genesis', The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway demos. It's the most amazing thing, the Montrose first record, all the demos, Boston demos that led up to these iconic records. And so we'd go there after our show, and they'd already have our record with artwork for sale (laughs)."We ask Sheehan to tell us more about Ten musically."We took a break on a tour and were able to go in and record," he explained. "I was super busy and couldn't make it for the writing sessions, so I came in and just played bass and that was kind of cool. I just could go, what do you got? Okay, maybe this will work and I would put a little bass line down. The songs were very together, but it was nice to be able to just come in and create a baseline that just came from nowhere, just from my first impression of how the song went. I didn't have a lot of time to even rehearse the songs. So in a way, that was kind of good, too, because it was spontaneous and came right, I didn't think it through. Thinking often… thinking will ruin a song pretty easily. And that happens with writing a lot. You just come up with a part and like it (but) the next day you think maybe we should hold on a second. Wait a minute. We had it. And now you're changing your mind? So that was a cool way to approach it. I just went in and played bass, and we came up with some cool stuff."In the full interview, Billy discussed a range of topics related to music production and performance. He talked more about Ten and its significance as their 10th studio record. Billy provided a detailed account of the recording process for the singles Good Luck Trying and Up On You, emphasizing the value of spontaneity and avoiding overthinking when creating music. The conversation also touched on the art of song arranging and hit songwriting techniques, exploring the concept of motifs, key changes, and song structures. We discussed the deliberate use of songwriting mechanisms to create hits and the intentional avoidance of radio-friendly song titles by bands like Led Zeppelin. Additionally, he explored the importance of live performances and spontaneity in music production, emphasizing the raw energy and genuine feel that it brings to recordings, plus heaps more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

One of our most requested episodes ever is for Genesis' ‘The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' (1974) double album. So finally, here it is! Regarded by many Genesis fans as the band's most audacious and greatest work, Lamb is a challenging 95 minute listen (the band's longest studio record). A concept album following the fictional character of Rael, it was the last Genesis album to feature original lead singer, and future solo star, Peter Gabriel. Who stepped up to replace him on 1976's ‘A Trick of the Tail'? Drummer and future solo superstar Phil Collins. Podcast hosts Stephen & Paul are followers of the band (Stephen seen them play live in 1992). However, they have a preference for the more commercial, Collins-led material when the band slimmed down to only 3 members (Collins, Tony Banks & Mike Rutherford). How would they cope with full on seventies prog-rock? With an album they had previously avoided due to run-time and reputation? With song titles like ‘The Colony of Slippermen' and ‘The Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging'? Should it have been this long? As many friends have commented, would it have worked better as a single album? What tracks would have been selected if the band had to have released it to fit on a single vinyl record (under 50 minutes)? That's the task Stephen & Paul have set themselves. The Nicks roll up their sleeves and start the process of deconstructing Genesis' massive concept double album from 1974, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Along the way they discuss their thoughts on concept albums in general, a curious hijacking, the birth of an iconic Canadian logo & Rush's first album. They then don their literary caps and try to parse what works, what doesn't and what it all means on the first disc of the Lamb. Genesis Redone The 2021 COVID lockdowns meant we couldn't get together to record. This really impacted the sound quality on a couple of episodes, particularly the one about Genesis (Season 1 Ep 15)So, we've re-recorded that episode. The key facts are the same, but because our podcasts are a conversation and we don't work from a tight script, it's basically a new episode. If you've listened to the original episode already, you might like to see how different this one is. We think you'll be impressed. *************Genesis is regarded by many as one of the most exceptional bands ever produced by England, and never better than their 5-man line-up in the early 70's. Both Genesis and Steve Hackett completed COVID-delayed tours this year, so it's a great time to discover (or remember!) some of the finest music you'll ever encounter. In particular, we talk about two sublime albums, Selling England by the Pound, and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. “Selling England......” contains “Firth of Fifth”, a 9-minute-long ensemble piece with fluid guitar, delicate piano & synth parts, flute & vocal pieces, underpinned by a strong rhythm section in Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford. It's regarded by many to be the finest single work by Genesis! The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, regarded by Genesis fans as their best complete work, is a complex story targeted at the US, with many American cultural references mixed with mythical and supernatural elements. It contains both their most delicate AND hard-edged pieces, still sounding fresh decades later. ************************* Oh, by the way, we're taking a short break to travel around Australia. We'll be back with a bunch of new episodes on October 16. Stay with us – there's some great stuff coming up! MEMORIES OF A PROGRESSIVE ROCK YOUTH IN 1970s LOS ANGELES When Yes opened for Black Sabbath in 1972, Jeremy Gilien's life was forever changed. In fact, he didn't bother sticking around for the headliner. Robert Matsuda asks him about that night, opening up a discussion about progressive rock, one of the greatly misunderstood genres in popular music.

As many of our listeners out there know, the Genesis album “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway” is one of the albums that comes up as a favorite of ours time and time again. Well, the drummer on that amazing album has a birthday coming up on January 30th. Yes, Phill Collins will be 71 and he's had an amazing career as the lead singer and drummer of Genesis and as a solo act. But perhaps his most enduring legacy …..(beyond the gated reverb drum sound which dominated the 80's and changed music forever).....he probably has the single most recognizable drum fill in the history of music which came at the 3:40 mark of his song “In The Air Tonite.”Everyone knows that drum fill. I mean everyone. So that got us to thinking, what are the other famous and cool drum fills out there? When on today's show we'll explore this topic as we give you our favorite drum fills! And we have a guest today!David Uosikkinen, drummer of The Hooters, has joined us today! As drummer with The Hooters, David has played all over the world and his band has sold millions of albums. Beyond his work with The Hooters he's also recorded with a number of other recognizable artists including Alice Cooper, Cyndi Lauper, and Dar Williams.David Uosikkinen's In The PocketThe Hooterswww.rightfiction.comDum Fills Spotify Playlist

After discussing Green Day's American Idiot on a previous episode (Ep. 48), Al became fixated on a couple of questions. Did Green Day send Jesus of Suburbia on a Hero's Journey? And were they telling essentially the same story that Titus Andronicus told in The Monitor (Ep. 34) and that Genesis told in The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway? Here to help Al grapple with these questions is playwright/novelist/actor/musician Nat Cassidy, who makes his return after appearing on Ep. 27. Nat breaks down the aspects of each album that fit the pattern of a Hero's Journey and those that don't, as well as discuss what he loves about each album and the many projects that he has been working on of late. You can follow Nat on Twitter at @natcassidy and on Instagram at @catnassidy. Genesis, Selling England by the Pound, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Ramones, Mr Mercedes, Rick Rubin, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Steve Hackett, Bowie, Elton John, Brian EnoWelcome to Episode 15.Mick and P. have moved to Byron Bay, where they are social distancing while trying out the local supply of avocadoes. Mick, 's been listening to the soundtrack of “Mr. Mercedes”, produced by Stephen King, who's big on music! Mick finds it hilarious that a song about one King story - The Ramones' “Pet Sematary” - is featured in a soundtrack for another. Also featuring songs by Radiohead, REM, Black Keys, Leonard Cohen, Jackson Browne, Randy Newman, Pixies The Phatman has been watching "McCartney 321" with Rick Rubin, one of the great record producers, and one we've previously covered in a couple of episodes. Paul talks about "Sgt Pepper" and how Jimi Hendrix paid the ultimate compliment to The Beatles by performing the title track live in London, a few days after its release. This week, we'll talk about how great a band Genesis was before they splintered after "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" in the mid-70's. Genesis – a 70's band generally classified as “progressive” - have been described b6y Jon Michaud, in The New Yorker as “Peter Gabriel dressed in a flower costume while singing ten- and twenty-minute songs that sounded like excerpts from Gilbert and Sullivan operas as reimagined by Lewis Carroll” .We talk about their progression from a group of private school boys into one of the most highly-regarded bands of all time, with an extraordinary degree of virtuoso skill across the board. In particular, we talk about two albums, Selling England by the Pound, and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. One song we both love is “Firth of Fifth”, a wonderful ensemble piece. Over 9 minutes long, with fluid guitar, delicate piano & synth parts, flute & vocal pieces, underpinned by a strong rhythm section in Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford, it's regarded by many to be the finest single work by Genesis! The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is often regarded by Genesis fans as their best complete work. A concept album, it's an immersive piece with a complex story featuring a load of mythical elements. Unlike their earlier albums, this album was specially targeted at the US, with very many American cultural references, inspired by a 200-date tour they did to support Selling England by the Pound. We talk about the origins of the "gated/distance mic" technique, used on Phil Collins' "In The Air Tonight", Bowie's "Heroes", and some of Peter Gabriel's most successful solo work. With both Genesis and guitarist Steve Hackett mounting tours featuring the music from Genesis' early period, it's a great time to discover (or remember!) some of the finest music you'll ever encounter. In this episode, I reached out to prog rock musician Dave Kerzner, who has worked with virtually everyone at some point, to discuss his projects and his favorite Genesis record. He chose the 1974 classic double concept album, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Dave was the perfect person to talk about Genesis with (in general) and specifically about The Lamb. He's played that piece live for a special 20th anniversary performance at ProgFest '94 with Kevin Gilbert and Nick D'Virgilio — who went on to release his own Lamb tribute under the name Rewiring Genesis, and he played drums for Genesis on the Calling All Stations album. "Squids" Kerzner is working on his own Lamb tribute album with Francis Dunner of It Bites (among others), played in Sound of Contact with Phil Collins' son Simon, recently bought a bunch of Tony Banks' keyboard equipment, and has worked with Steve Hackett and famed Genesis producer Nick Davis. There's more, but I'll leave his credentials there for now. Dave and I walked through the album and he dropped in interesting anecdotes along the way. It was a lot of fun. I hope you enjoy revisiting The Lamb with us and perhaps learning more about Kerzner's work. Learn more about Dave's music here. I appreciate you listening! Well done for making it to Episode Five, where we count our chickens both before and after the return of agricultural icon Farmer Collins, just for good measure. Ralph Ploojagig doesn't make an appearance this week - or any other week, for that matter - but perhaps Sunday Brunch will take him under their wing and give him some hot broth or both. Also, part of this week's programme will be in color... but which one? And can you find the missing U in 'color'? Write it in the margin of your Radio Times before you start listening and you too could win a signed super deluxe edition of Larry the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway in this, the Year of the Aardvark.
In diesem Sinne ...calling all stations…
Nursery crime : the fountain of salmacis. Selling England by the Pound : Dancing with the Moonlit Knight. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway : The Lamia. A Trick of the Tail : Entangled. Wind and Wuthering : Eleventh earl of mar. And Then There Were Three : Many too Many. Duke : Duchess. Invisible Touch : Land of Confusion. We Can't Dance : Since I Lost You. Avec les coups de coeurs personnel (et de la parité des minorités) : barberouss : I Can't Dance Fox : Mama Hygie : In too Deep Bonus de la parité live : No Son of Mine Les clips :I can't danceJesus He knows meLand of confusion Bonus :Peter Gabriel.
This is another new kind of mix for the blog. This is an all Eno mix. I came across the Eno tune "Spider & I " in a recently downloaded mix & I was reminded of how much I like Eno's voice. So I thought why not collect some favorite vocal tunes together in one place. For the first half of the mix I alternate between vocal tunes & instrumentals. I thought this might be nice to break things up a bit. About half way through I realized I'd run out of time so I went to all vocals. I love singing along with his songs & it is nice to have some favorites all together. The title comes from Genesis' "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" album, where Eno is credited with "enosification." Which he described this way..."I would take existing instruments and feed them through various devices to 'weird them up'." I hope you enjoy this Eno mix.....
