This week, Conor and Lauren are joined by Peter C Hayward, designer of podcast darling Things in Rings. Peter sports his blue beard talking about his approach to design, his plethora of upcoming releases, and his affinity for Pixar easter eggs. Then, Lauren shares her recent Button Shy escapades. Conor tells us about some prototypes from former podcast host Sarah which includes a disdain for onions and affinity for spirits. There is no Question of the Pod this week due to scheduling changes, but we'll return to our QotP segment in our next release. Though we fancy ourselves "omnigamers" -- gamers who enjoy all genres -- we're kind of fooling ourselves. There are certainly specific categories of board games we try to stay away from. But! With every "rule" (if you can call it that), there's gotta be exceptions, right? So we explore ours with Peter C. Hayward. The game designer (That Time You Killed Me, French Toast, Fiction) is very...discerning, so we couldn't wait to hear his thoughts on these matters. Separately, we recently played a game of Istanbul with Peter, and he couldn't stop raving about how it got "quick turns" down just right. So that got us thinking...what other specific things do specific games get "just right"? Plus: Play along with us on a round of Peter's new game, Apropos of Board Games! In the 14th Century B.C.E., the pharaoh Akhenaten attempted to shift Egypt into monotheism centered on the cult of the god Aten. Apparently there's some who argue it was possibly instead henotheism, whereby many gods are acknowledged but one is elevated above the others--a claim advanced about many ostensibly mono- or polytheistic religions, even some practised today--but at any rate is was exceptionally controversial. By the time his son Tutankhaten became pharaoh, the cult of Aten was suppressed, and the ascendancy of the god Amun was restored in a polytheistic pantheon. Hence the new pharaoh's name was changed from Tutankhaten to Tutankhamun. They say nothing goes according to plan. That was true of the dozens of assassination plots against Adolf Hitler while he led Nazi Germany during the 1930s and 1940s. The global fight against infectious diseases has a new tactic called “genetic surveillance.” Dr. Bronwyn MacInnis leads a team of researchers that uses genetic surveillance to halt the spread of deadly microbes. To do it, she and her colleagues openly share information. That kind of collaboration is required of players in Pandemic, in which each player takes on the role of a professional in the field. The game’s designer, Matt Leacock, tells us how the game came together. Removing cubes from a board isn’t a matter of life and death, but combating global contagions is.Read a full transcript of this episode.Immersed is produced by Cardboard Edison.Special thanks to Dr. Bronwyn MacInnis, Matt Leacock, Sandy Bondarowicz, and James Griffin.Editing assistance by Eric Booth.Music:Ambient Bongos by Alexander Nakarada (www.serpentsoundstudios.com).
