This week, Conor and Lauren are joined by Peter C Hayward, designer of podcast darling Things in Rings. Peter sports his blue beard talking about his approach to design, his plethora of upcoming releases, and his affinity for Pixar easter eggs. Then, Lauren shares her recent Button Shy escapades. Conor tells us about some prototypes from former podcast host Sarah which includes a disdain for onions and affinity for spirits. There is no Question of the Pod this week due to scheduling changes, but we'll return to our QotP segment in our next release. Outside that, there's still the usual chatter about what has been hitting our tables, and what has us fired up! We were on a road trip. As our car was eating the miles, our journals and scrapbooks were filling up with photos, postcards and other souvenirs that would later remind us of the wonderful time we had. We were exploring towering peaks and massive canyons as we were making our way through this amazing desert, always being mindful of hazards. We loved every moment as we traversed Death Valley: Highs & Lows by Kevin Ellenburg from Button Shy with illustrations from Fachri Maulana. The elements are alive in our realm. The water element can douse the deadly flames of the fire element that would otherwise leave behind deeply scorched earth, while the earth element itself has the power to consume the waters of a dozen seas. The three elements are in constant battle, balancing each other out at times in infinite variations of their eternal cycles. Yet none of the three elements can ever reign supreme in the realm of Mysticana: A Foundation Deck by Dustin Dobson and Jamie Thul from Button Shy. The 60s in England were a time of new music trends and dramatic changes in fashion and art. Celebrities from around the world would flock to the country's capital London to immerse themselves in this wave of cultural changes. From there, these superstars would travel the width and breadth of the country using a train line catering to the well-off. While the luxurious railway carriages were reserved only for the VIPs, the less fortunate had to jostle for space in cattle class and hope they would get a glimpse of their idols. The first snow of winter had fallen. Underneath the cosy blanket of snow, new life was stirring. The land was coming alive with creatures trying to carve out a life. We mostly stick to board games this week, but have a brief detour to discuss how Tetris Effect Connected soothes the soul and a succinct but fulfilling quest for the Lost in Translation Soundtrack on vinyl. We then discuss all of the Kickstarters we are interested in, our featured games of the week, and then take a rapid fire approach to the games of 2022 that we most anticipate. Being a city planner isn't easy. You need to balance out the needs of your citizens for green spaces, living accommodation as well as offices and industry. You also have to ensure the infrastructure allows everyone to get around easily, without taking over. If you've been following me for a while, you'll know how much I like small box games. From wallet games to mini mint games to mint tin games to Oink-sized games to a deck of cards to any game that you can repackage into a smaller box and take with you anywhere. The other thing I like are games that are very quick to teach and learn and very quick to play, but still provide a lot of fun and excitement and many small box games provide exactly that. So in this article, I want to discuss why small and quick games are sometimes the better choice than big, heavy and long games.Read the full article here: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2021/08/31/small-and-beautiful-topic-discussion/LinksMint Tin Mini Skullduggery review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2019/03/09/mint-tin-mini-skulduggery/subQuark: https://subquark.com/Button Shy: https://buttonshygames.com/Oink Games: https://oinkgames.com/en/Nathan Meunier: https://nathanmeunier.com/Intro Music: Bomber (Sting) by Riot (https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/)If you want to support this podcast financially, please check out the links below:Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/tabletopgamesblogKo-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/TabletopGamesBlogPayPal: https://paypal.me/pools/c/8hovaYouKDWebsite: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tabletopgamesblog/message

The seasons began again. We had to build our rice paddies, fill them with water, plough them with our buffalos, plant our rice and wait for it to grow. We had to be clever about how we divided the land to make the best use of the most fertile soil. We also had to have enough help to get the harvest in, but overall, we had to be patient and wait for the end of the Seasons of Rice by Button Shy.

Mint Works Ganz Schön Clever Coin Age Coup Lost Legacy Infinity Gauntlet Peters brokkeliste: Templar Intrique, Burgoo, This town aint big enough for the 2-4 of us og Raiders of the Lost Tomb. Støt op om Papstinenser Papstinenser er tilknyttet papstinenser.10er.dk, hvor man kan støtte podcasten med en 10er eller et andet beløb, for hver ny episode. Det er der allerede flere der gør – tak! "From the discovery of New France to the 1981 Referendum, all of Quebec history is based on a single fallacy: that the British actually wanted to own Quebec. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. The British already had a surplus of colonies in the sunny Caribbean and took little interest in the Canadian icebox later dismissed by Voltaire as nothing more than 'quelques arpents de neige'... In 1759, with war raging everywhere between France and England, the British knew if would look suspicious if they didn't engage the French in North America. They placed the expedition in the hands of a thirty-two-year-old, inexperienced general, James Wolfe, and gave him strict orders: 'Put up a good fight... but lose.' Wolfe devised a clever theatrical strategy. He would choose an impossible attack-route: Arriving by boat on the St. Lawrence river then scaling the unassailable walls of the fortress of Quebec, thus guaranteeing defeat and dumping Quebec with France for good. But Wolfe's glorious defeat was snapped from the jaws of victory by Montcalm who brilliantly out-manoeuvred Wolfe and surrendered--a stroke of genius that got the colony off France's hands once and for all."-Nick Auf der Mar, "La Petite Histoire du Québec (Version Anglaise)"Games Played Last Week:01:09 -SEAL Team Flix (Pete Ruth & Mark Thomas, WizKids, 2018) 02:37 -Teotihuacan: City of Gods (Daniele Tascini & Dávid Turczi, NSKN Games, 2018)04:04 -Yokohama (Hisashi Hayashi, Tasty Minstrel Games, 2016)04:48 -Sprawlopolis (Steven Aramini, Danny Devine, & Paul Kluka, Button Shy, 2018)08:26 -Mezo (John Clowdus, Kolossal Games, 2019)13:25 -The Crew: The Quest for Planet 9 (Thomas Sing, KOSMOS, 2019)15:02 -Qwixx (Steffen Benndorf, Gamewright, 2012)16:41 -That's Pretty Clever (Wolfgang Warsch, Schmidt Spiele, 2018)17:30 -Coloretto (Michael Schacht, ABACUSSPIELE, 2003)19:32 -Orléans: Invasion (Inka Brand, Markus Brand, & Reiner Stockhausen, dlp Games, 2015)20:59 -Scythe (Jamey Stegmaier, Stonemaier Games, 2016)News (and why it doesn't matter):25:55 Expansion to Twilight Imperium 4th ed.26:44 Pandemic Legacy Season 027:20 Undaunted: Reinforcements28:39 DeepMind: An AI for Diplomacy?29:35 Lord of the Rings: Anniversary Edition31:01 Steven Universe Beach-a-Palooza on Kickstarter July 14th31:29 Pendulum by Stonemaier31:39 Lost Ruins of Arnak by CGE31:59 Documentary: Gamemaster32:42 Feature Game: Imperial Struggle (Ananda Gupta & Jason Matthews, GMT Games, 2020)

For our last episode before 100, we are really excited to shine a big, bright spotlight on a few corners of the board gaming world that you might not know much about. If you want to build up some "indie cred" when it comes to some potential hot games in the future, this is the show for you! First up, we welcome back Chris Harris, who runs the Solitaire Print and Play game design contest on BGG. We spoke with Chris last year, and he's back to talk about how much the contest has grown, how excited we are for past winners and designers to move on to bigger and better things (including the publication of last year's winner, Black Sonata), and what's there to check out this year. As of the date of this episode airing, 8/10/18, the Solitaire PnP contest is still going on. You can check out games, participate in playtests, and follow conversations here: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2011569/2018-solitaire-print-and-play-contest Our second interview is a doozy - five people on a Skype call, and somehow it did not collapse in on itself. We welcome various folks involved with the GenCant Game Design contest this year, run in tandem with Button Shy Games. Jason Tagmire is the founder and CEO of Button Shy, while Jon Simantov is the designer of Button Shy's latest game, Liberation, soon to hit Kickstarter. They were two of the judges who declared two winners. Elizabeth Hargrave was recognized for her 2-4 player, "I split, you choose" game, Tussie Mussie, while Corry Damey contributed the 2 player tile laying game, Seasons of Rice. We get into the games, the process of picking winners, and some dos and don't for anyone who wants to enter contests like this one in the future.
Steven and I discuss his newest game, Tricky Tides. It's a cool little pick up and deliver game with some neat movement mechanics. We also talk about his up coming Button Shy game, Sprawlopolis.

Button Shy's very first Cult Film Postcard Game is out as part of our Board Game of the Month Club. The push-your-luck card game Say What Again was designed by Ben Begeal and was obviously inspired by the cult classic, Pulp Fiction. In this long form interview Jason Tagmire interviews Ben about the film and its inspiration for the game.DIRECT LINK: http://www.buttonshy.com/bs/diy/DIYBG004.mp3
Jason Tagmire (Designer / Publisher / Button Shy owner-operator) goes through the ins and outs of running a do-it-yourself board game company. This week! An interview with Chip Beauvais of Chroma Cubes fame about his new game, Smoke & Mirrors. Then we give our own review of Smoke & Mirrors and discuss our fear of Kickstarter. Gin is imbibed throughout, and Tom probably swallows loudly into the microphone at least once, because he is a monster. Intro Gag: Comin' to ya' live from the badminton championships, I'm Johannes Stauffer and with my as always are some kinda' feathery balls, and this is the Mildly Alarming Podcast. Episode 111: Disaster Toilet Control Segment 1: Interview with Chip Beauvais Chip can be found on twitter at @the_FlyingSheep and on the web at flyingsheep.com. His Kickstarter for Smoke & Mirrors (combined, as discussed in the episode, with two other games for one big, exciting three-game Kickstarter) can be found here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/239309591/button-shy-wallet-game-series-3-micro-games Episode Sponsor: Uncle Pepperdin's Fleezius Bermjax Segment 2: Smoke & Mirrors Gameplay. Also, Kickstarter Outro Gag: The Mildly Alarming Podcast is made possible by an unlocked door at the recording studio, a series of easily guessed passwords and security questions, and Johannes' ability to subdue a security guard by just flexing until the veins in his neck get all bulgy and gross. Walker and Huey voted to end the game early, but there were then procedural questions as to whether that warranted a runoff in the French Presidential style. Chip III repeated his preference for a ranked-choice voting system, but he couldn't decide whether his second choice was a single transferable vote or first past the post. Meanwhile, Mark gerrymandered the rest of the table into one sprawling district, and made three new districts intersect at his spine so he got three votes to everyone else's collective one. He moved, seconded, and veto-proofed a motion to the effect that everyone else should stop talking.00:59 AYURIS: Cryo (Tom Jolly & Luke Laurie, Z-Man Games, 2021)Games Played Last Week:03:23 -The Witcher: Old World (Łukasz Woźniak, Go On Board, 2023)11:55 -My Father's Work (T.C.
