Mark interviews Lizbeth Meredith an award-winning author, speaker, and online teacher living in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Her memoir Pieces of Me has been adapted as Stolen By Their Father for Lifetime Television and was released earlier this year. Prior to the interview, Mark thanks his patrons, talks about a cool Kickstarter that one of his patrons, Holger Nils Pohl is running, and shares a word about this episode's sponsor. You can learn more about how you can get your work distributed to retailers and library systems around the world at starkreflections.ca/Findaway. During their chat, Mark and Lizbeth talk about: Lizbeth's earliest melodramatic poetry writing when she was young Why and how the writing helped when she started to think of her life as a story Realizing how Lizbeth's PIECES OF ME is just one of an endless number of stories of survival and resilience Her story of looking over two years of her children being abducted and taken away by their non-custodial father The importance of community for writers as well as for people in general Being told, when sharing her first draft "You know, this doesn't HAVE to be published" Positive feedback from agents who loved her manuscript but would be unable to take it on Deciding to publish with a hybrid publisher (a publisher that charges authors for all the publishing costs) Learning about writers grants to be able to take advantage of and applying for them How applying for a grant helps a writer learn how to pitch Having her book optioned by Canadian company Cineflex The lengthy timelines that it took in order to get the option in place The movie name being re-adapted from the book title to "Stolen by Their Father" The release date of the 2022 movie lining up with the anniversary of the date Lizbeth left her husband Some of the other writing projects Lizbeth is working on Lizbeth's podcast, Persistence U with Lizbeth Advice Lizbeth would offer to her younger self or beginning writers And more... After the interview, Mark reflects on Lizbeth's business decision on how she would publish, recognizing the skills she already had with skills from the hybrid publisher she chose. He also reflects on her pointing out the value of community.   Links of Interest: Lizbeth's Website Lizbeth's Podcast IMDB Listing for Stolen by Their Father Lizbeth's Interview of Best Book Ever Podcast Findaway Voices Holger Nils Pohl's Kickstarter: Creating Clarity Buy Mark a Coffee Patreon for Stark Reflections Best Book Ever Podcast Lovers Moon Podcast The Relaxed Author Buy eBook Direct Buy Audiobook Direct Publishing Pitfalls for Authors An Author's Guide to Working with Libraries & Bookstores Wide for the Win Mark's Canadian Werewolf Books This Time Around (Short Story) A Canadian Werewolf in New York Stowe Away (Novella) Fear and Longing in Los Angeles Fright Nights, Big City Lover's Moon   Lizbeth Meredith is an author living in Chattanooga, Tennessee after more than 5 decades in Alaska. Interview - Jane Eamon discussing her beautiful seventh album "Pieces Of Me"

Folk Roots Radio... with Jan Hall

Kelowna BC's Jane Eamon started writing the songs for her beautiful seventh album "Pieces of Me" after her husband had a stroke on Christmas Day and the sudden death of her father. At the time, Eamon, a 2011 Kerrville New Folk finalist, actually thought she was done with the music business - but the songs wouldn't rest, they just kept coming. Yet, after helping her husband recover from his stroke, he was then diagnosed with Stage 4 prostate cancer which lead to further family turmoil. Fortunately Jane's songwriting helped her pull her through this incredibly difficult period in her life. What developed from all this was the stripped down, honest and completely authentic nine track album album Pieces of Me which speaks to the emotions of that challenging period, but also brings with it a sense of hope - storms can be weathered. Pieces of Me was produced by her long-time collaborator Andrew Smith from Lake Studios, Kelowna BC, and has been critically acclaimed despite flying under many radars. Jane Eamon's husband is now in recovery from cancer and she's working on a new album. For more information about the music of Jane Eamon visit https://janeeamon.net. Music: Jane Eamon "Pieces Of Me", "Broken Things", "Stuck" and "Not Today" from "Pieces Of Me" (2020, Self) CDN.

Born in one of the liveliest boroughs of New York City, The Bronx, Levina Lye has been singing since the age of three and was presented with many awards at a young age. When her parents relocated her to a more peaceful setting in Upstate New York, the new found silence helped her to cultivate feelings of loneliness, standing out, and being a rebel into poetry which would later become songs on her two EP’s Pieces of Me and More of Me . She has covered songs by a wide array of artists from 6lack, Adele, Drake, Rihanna, The Weeknd and more, as a way to sway the world over to her own poetic songs. Her covers became known as The Emo Queen Remix’s, as she began to own every song she took on.  Levina Lye’s rendition of Wicked Games by The Weeknd spread like wild fire and was even banned in Germany for a bit!  Her first EP, Pieces Of Me has been critically acclaimed by several members of the press such as The Urban Daily, Soul Train, All Hip Hop, The Hype Magazine, Swurv Radio and many more through the years. Her singles Fade Away and Fall were international successes and Fall charted number four on the Coca Cola countdown in Africa.  Levina Lye is a real artist, a true musician if you will. October of last year she released her second EP More Of Me which is taking the world by storm. On this EP, she unleashed some harsh truths on her single Your Song, and personal thoughts that she felt her supporters needed to know. Everything she does is for them and to let them know that as they grow, she grows alongside them, truly showing that she is human in every sense of the word.

Ledisi Young (her given name meaning "to bring forth" in Nigerian) was born in the Big Easy, where she sang with the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra when she was eight years old and spent many adolescent hours watching her mother perform with a local R&B band, often in a nearby park. After the family relocated to Oakland, CA, Ledisi followed her mother's lead and sang in a local band, but left to form her own group and identity. She became widely noted for her performances in Beach Blanket Babylon, a long-running San Francisco-based cabaret featuring song parodies, celebrity impersonations, and enormous hats; she got the gig after being nominated for a Shellie Award in 1990 for her role as Dorothy in a local version of The Wiz. She later formed Anibade (Ledisi's middle name), which depending on what you read means "to bring forth luck" or "my mother is great" in Yoruba. In 2000, Ledisi released her first album, entitled Soulsinger: The Revival. Ledisi and her group toured in 2001, performing various shows. In 2002, Ledisi released her second album, Feeling Orange but Sometimes Blue. The album won her an award for "Outstanding Jazz Album" at the California Music Awards. In 2007, Ledisi signed a major record deal with Verve Forecast and released her third album in August of that year, entitled Lost & Found, which sold almost 217,000 copies and earned her two Grammy nominations, including one for Best New Artist. In 2008, Ledisi released her Christmas album, It's Christmas. In 2009, Ledisi released her fourth album Turn Me Loose, which earned her 2 Grammy nominations. Her latest album is ‘Pieces of Me'. Well it’s my 3rd post & It’s about time I played a track by the great Gil Scott Heron.
