This week on The Chrome Cast, we stay in a pretty #madebyGoogle sort of mood. Starting with some early thoughts on the new Pixel Buds A-Series, we talk through all that Google is doing right in this space and - perhaps more importantly - all the things they are still basically missing on. Yes, the new earbuds are pretty nice, but they are on the pricey side for a device that lacks many of the features seen in far cheaper headphones. On sale and closer to $79, these new Pixel Buds could be just the right price, though. For the second half of the podcast, we delve into the recent reports on Google's foldable OLED screens beginning manufacture in October. Samsung has been tapped for sourcing and The Elec says along with screens for VIVO and Xiomi, Samsung will be manufacturing screens for Google as well. If this is the case, we're likely tracking an unveiling of the Pixel Fold in October at Google's hardware event and perhaps a release of this still-mysterious phone sometime in late 2021. Apple's release of the AirPods in 2016 has transformed the wireless headphone industry. The earbuds have enjoyed widespread success with over $12 billion in revenue (which is nearly equal to the revenue of Spotify, Twitter, Snap, and Shopify combined), and its integrated Siri capabilities for announcing message notifications, replying to messages, volume control, and playing music have set the stage for voice-enabled smart hearables. In just the last month, Amazon dropped the new Echo Buds, and Google debuted the Pixel Buds A-Series — pushing the boundaries of potential for what the assistants in our ears can do. Wayfinding has emerged as a viable use case, illustrated by Amazon's demo of Echo Buds providing product location in a Whole Foods, and Foursquare's Marsbot for AirPods offering “guided” audio tours. Additionally, companies are honing in on the fitness craze with fitness tracking features. With 43.7 million users tapping into the voice assistants in their hearables, these devices are only going to expand their capabilities. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rainagency/message

Tiger Lake speed, Google I/O sessions, and Q1 Chromebook sales skyrocket

This week on The Chrome Cast, we begin the show by talking a bit in depth about the new ASUS Chromebook CX5 and, more importantly, about the difference Tiger Lake Intel processors are poised to make in the Chromebook market. This device is not only attractive and well-made, it is by far the fastest Chromebook we've ever had in the office and demolishes even the 10th-gen Core i7 in every benchmark across the board. What this means for the future of mid/high-range Chromebooks this year is incredibly promising. In the second half of the show, we talk through the updated Google I/O 2021 website and how simple Google is making it this year for those who want to take in some sessions. The site is easy to distill and navigate and it makes finding just the right content very intuitive. What we'll see at I/O still remains a bit of a mystery, but with this session layout, we at least have a bit of a look at what's coming. With one of those sessions again being centered on Android apps on Chromebooks, we're hopeful the consistent messaging from Google on this paired with the huge Q1 sales numbers for Chromebooks combine to get more developers on board to make Android apps run well on larger screens. NOTABLE LINKS ASUS' MediaTek CM3 Flip and Detachable available in Canada Snapdragon 7c Chromebook tablet 'Coachz' is nearing production [U: Tweet pulled] Google accidentally announces its Pixel Buds A-Series a bit early Chromebook sales continue to surge in Q1 of 2021, up 275% Chrome OS 90 is still missing for a very important group of Chromebooks Google I/O 2021 sessions every Chromebook fan will want to watch This episode is brought to you by Fresh Roasted Coffee, a coffee website that we have been using for a while now.
