“In fact, there was a great study that showed that, in the long term, young children and adolescents who consumed minimally processed soy products had a lower breast cancer risk later on in life than those who did not consume soy products. And I thought that was a great thing to point out because this means that it's actually healthy throughout the lifecycle, not just when you're in those years around menopause, but even as children and adolescents it can help set you up for a healthier lifestyle.” - Dr. Gemma Newman Today we are really thrilled to have with us a wonderful soul who truly exemplifies practicing what you preach. A staunch advocate of a plant-based diet and plant-based nutrition, Dr. Gemma Newman, aka The Plant Power Doctor, is a British medical doctor, author of the book The Plant Power Doctor, and host of The Wellness Edit podcast. Sometimes known as the ‘Plant Power Doctor' because of her recent best selling book, ‘The Plant Power Doctor: a simple prescription for a healthier you,' Gemma Newman is a British medical doctor that educates the public on the need for holistic health, plant-based nutrition, and lifestyle medicine. After obtaining her degree in medicine from the University of Wales College of Medicine, she went on to gain additional qualifications in gynaecology and family planning, but worked in many specialities throughout her career before deciding on family practice. Due to her background, Gemma has a vast amount of knowledge and experience at her disposal that she tries to share with whoever will listen.  Being a founding member and serving as an ambassador for ‘Plant Based Health Professionals UK' (PBHPUK), alongside her involvement with the ‘British Society of Lifestyle Medicine' (BSLM), Gemma has taken it upon herself to try and increase the awareness of the things that she preaches. Whether it's the general public or even other doctors who do not possess the same insights, Gemma regularly attends conferences, helps with training programmes, and makes appearances on podcasts and other forms of social media to help spread the message about the benefits of plant-based medicine. This episode of the ‘Strong Voice' podcast will begin with an introduction to Dr. Gemma Newman, the importance of her ideas, and what motivates her to do what she does. We then discuss the role that diet, in particular plant-based nutrition, plays in preventing and helping manage some of the common chronic diseases that we find in society today. Afterwards, we talk about the practicalities of a plant based diet, and cover questions like if it's still possible to have the same comfort foods or what the major differences are between plant-based whole foods and processed foods. Drawing on personal experience, we discuss the role that spirituality plays for our health and wellbeing, and how we define what it means to be spiritual, instead of the conventional understanding that is shaped by religion. As always, we hope you enjoy listening, and please let us know your thoughts on social media. It's been a difficult week in the news and we ask why, in the UK now, there is a greater prison sentence for pulling down a statue than there is for rape! We're furious that our right to protest is now under threat. In the Book Collective we continue with the magnificent The Female Lead, We Rise By Lifting Others by Edwina Dunn. We're still on Veganuary and today we cook up Sticky Tofu from Dr Gemma Newman's cookbook, The Plant Power Doctor.   Marcelle Rose is a registered nutritionist and health coach she specialises in helping women beat binge eating, bulimia, emotional eating and yo-yo dieting so they can make peace with their body and heal their relationship with food. We get all the answers from Marcelle in this no-holds-barred interview full of facts and useful tips to help you break the diet cycle. We also ask Marcelle what her ‘significant object' is.  In the Book Collective we continue reading The Female Lead, We Rise By Lifting Others by Edwina Dunn, in this week's read we meet Dr Jasvinder Sanghera, founder of Karma Nirvana and learn of her fight for women not wanting to enter into arranged marriages, there's the inspiring Joyce Banda, president of Malawi whose education program for girls has now enrolled 6,500 females into education. We meet Kathrine Switzer the first woman to officially run the Boston marathon, only because they didn't realise she was female! Dr Gemma Newman is no ordinary doctor. A GP now for over 17 years, she entered into the medical professional with one main goal, which was to help people. Over the years she has grown to understand how wonderful, yet how limited the conventional medicine model can be. Chronic modern medicine is fantastic, and when we have a car accident, and need emergency surgery or a life saving course of antibiotics, the advances in modern medicine has been extraordinary. However the same cannot be said for the treatment of chronic disease.  Things like back pain, heart disease, diabetes, depression, auto immune disease, are much tougher nuts to crack.  Over the last fifteen years I have had plenty of experience of this trying to manage my own multiple sclerosis.  In 2006 I got very ill, diagnosed with MS one year later and started a range of medications to help manage my symptoms.  I was injecting copaxone to 2016, when I decided that the conventional path to managing my condition was not the best path for me.  In April 2016, I switched to a plant based diet, and started to practice a lifestyle approach to managing my health, trying to induce and fast track the healing process.  I have to tell you it is people like Dr Newman, who have validated every single decision I have made over the last 5.5 years.  Dr Newman is a wonderful example of a new group of medical practitioners, who have a deep understanding of our bodies and an appreciation for the role our lifestyle plays in our health.  In this conversation I start of by asking Gemma, when did she know she wanted to be a doctor, and who continues to inspire her today.  Gemma over the years has become much more open minded on what is the best course of action for her patients to implement programs and lifestyles that kickstart the healing process in people's bodies and allow them to go on and lead better healthier happier lives.  She learned more about psychological interventions, ways she could support people to change their mindset to facilitate change and growth, and to help her patients with their mental health. Her own journey to plant based advocacy came by chance, as it was her husbands transition to this way of living who convinced her to give it a go.  Curiosity got the better of her and with a family history of heart disease, and after seeing her husband benefit from the transition, she herself went plant based and started to see a remarkable improvement in her own health within the first 28 days.  Over the next number of months, everything about her health started to improve including going from a size 18 to a size 8.  This gave Gemma the foundation and confidence to bring her new learnings into her professional setting and with over 3000 patients in her family practice, Gemma spends alot of time speaking to her patients about ways in which they can change their lifestyle, what they eat, how they move, think and interact with people, and the difference this can make to their all round health.  This is a wonderful conversation and I know you will get some incredible value from it.  Please also check Dr Newman out across her social media channels as everyday she is sharing free content, all designed to help people become healthier.  Her website is also an excellent resource www.gemmanewman.com and her new book, The Plant Power Doctor, is a wonderful investment and I believe should sit in every family home. I can tell you that by me changing the way I life and changing my environment, I have been able to totally transform my life and my health.  I know and have met many others in the last ten years who have had a similar experience.  This is a subject matter close to my heart as I know if you decide to give this a go, commit, and be disciplined in your approach, the return on that investment will be incredible and actually it is also great fun. In this weeks podcast Jinty and Lou discuss the Ofsted report about sexual harassment in primary and secondary schools that came from Everyone's Invited, a website and Instagram page dedicated to reporting over 50,000 testimonies from survivors of the rape culture centered within schools. We speak to 3 women who learned first hand that sexualisation came directly from their schools. A new `book for the Book Collective this month, ‘A year of Marvellous Ways' by Sarah Winman, We continue with Brain food with a delicious wholesome salad. Jinty and Lou discuss their WI's and the Wine Collective pops open this month's choices.   From a comment made by Jinty's daughter we uncover the girl only assemblies that they had to endure. Assemblies that put the responsibility squarely on the female for how boys and male teachers look at them. Wearing a coloured bra that might be seen through a white shirt and having a skirt a little too short, showing (as Nancy says) risqué knees, suddenly made them feel self aware and sexualised. We invite Millie, Nancy and Daisy into the Collective to talk about their experiences of the rape culture that is prevalent within schools. We talk about how wording such as frigid and Slut are commonly used by boys toward the girls. And how it is only now, a few years after leaving school, that they realise how it affected them. We ask the question why it took Ofsted 5 years to act on recommendations made by the governments Women's and Equality Select Committee?   The Book Collective talk about the new book, ‘A year of Marvellous Ways' by Sarah Winman a beautiful story about an 89 year old woman called Marvellous, it's set in Cornwall and is a poetic tale of love, loss and human spirit with a little magic. We prepare to read to the end of chapter 11.   We continue with Brain Food for the Foodie Collective a tasty salad incorporating all that is good for the brain.   The Wine Collective pops the cork and sip their way through this months choices, a white wine from France Picpoul Pinet and the non alcoholic alternative, Gimber a refreshing ginger drink, that has Jinty's taste buds in a whirl.   We report back on the WI's with amazing results….except for Lou's food diary!   We have also entered a competition to win recording equipment and would love you to vote for us by clicking on this link….. https://www.myrodecast.com/ Wine Collective https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/267931157 Gimber non alcoholic on offer right now at https://www.planetorganic.com/products/gimber-500ml Book Collective https://www.amazon.co.uk/Year-Marvellous-Ways-Richard-Bestseller/dp/0755390911 Foodie Collective https://www.amazon.co.uk/Plant-Power-Doctor-prescription-healthier/dp/1529107741   --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jinty-sheerin/message
