Guest presented by Liz Bonnin. We all instinctively know that sleep is incredibly important but science doesn't actually have a satisfying answer for why we need to sleep. There are multiple theories, but now, new research from Imperial College London has suggested that the leading idea might actually be incorrect. Science journalist Ginny Smith explains.Nearly 80 years ago, one of the rarest elements in the world, promethium, was first discovered, but it's properties have only now been revealed. Andrea Sella, Professor of Chemistry at University College London, tells us what this means. What's the scariest animal on the planet? Lions, crocodiles, or maybe tigers might come to mind. Yet a recent study has found that animals around the globe fear our voices far more than sounds of any other predators. Professor Liana Zanette explains how her research could help conservation efforts. Finally, we answer one of your questions. Listener Mary Evans got in touch to ask: ‘do you think it's likely that people who are widely travelled and used to eating local food and drinking tap water would have more diverse bacteria in their gut?' Angela shares a short clip from her interview with gut health doctor, Megan Rossi, in which she talks about the importance of diversifying your diet in order to activate better health in the gut - the foundation of all wellbeing. KEY TAKEAWAYS People think food just has a health element to it, but food should be enjoyed, too. Those who actually revel in the pleasure of food have been proven to live longer. Diversifying our diets not only aids out human cellular make-up, but nourishes the trillions of micro-bacteria that keep us healthy and functioning. We tend to be extreme when it comes to diets. Mainly plant-based foods is a great way to go, but we shouldn't discount the value of meat and other proteins. EPISODE SUMMARY How often have you heard that your gut health is directly linked to the health of your entire body? We often associate gut issues with symptoms like bloating, gas, acid reflux, or constipation. But we rarely connect gut issues with other symptoms like fatigue, PMS, cramps, hot flashes, and other hormonal imbalances.  I've seen recently in this post-pandemic world that many of our guts are in far a worse state than before.  We're more inflamed. Our immune system is more out of whack. And we're seeing more and more cases of autoimmunity in women.  The first place we have to look to make a change is our gut health. An inflamed gut not only causes digestive issues, but it can lead to headaches, pains, sluggishness, hormonal imbalance, and even changes in mental health like anxiety or depression.  Dr. Vincent Pedre– a functional gut health doctor– joins us today to discuss the connection between leaky gut and system-wide inflammatory disruption– especially related to our hormones, metabolism, blood sugar, and mood.  Dr. Pedre explains that ‘although they call our gut the second brain, I think our gut is our first intuitive brain.'  He shares how you can learn more about exactly what your gut needs through a personalized protocol for gut health.  If your current doctors can't find answers, aren't seeing any abnormalities, or are unable to pinpoint what treatments will help you, it's time for you to try something more comprehensive to manage your symptoms. And that's what you'll get from tuning in here to Dr. Pedre! In this podcast, you'll realize how connected our gut is to our overall health, and what's possible for you in healing your gut– therefore giving you a healthier life.  Make sure to listen here for tons of must-know gut tips that you can start implementing today! It's time to take action and listen to your gut to optimize your health and live your life to the fullest.  Dr. Vincent Pedre Dr. Vincent Pedre is the medical director of Pedre Integrative Health and the founder of Dr. Pedre Wellness. He's also the founder of Happy Gut Life and works as a nutraceutical consultant and spokesperson for Nature MD.  Vincent is the author of the book Gut Smart, which provides an incredible framework for figuring out what's going on with our gut health, and what to do about it. It features a 14-day personalized gut healing plan based on his gut smart quiz, which is a culmination of his decades of research and clinical experience as a functional gut health doctor.  IN THIS EPISODE Learn about the 14-day program for gut healing  Dr. Vincent's history with his own gut health How the gut supports women's health Your gut and hormone health  Detoxification and gut health  How your mood and mental health are related to your gut  Supporting the gut microbiome The top three things disrupting our gut health  RESOURCES MENTIONED Buy The GUT SMART Protocol Book   Free Chapter from The Gut SMART Protocol Book Happy Gut Life Pedre Integrative Health Dr. Pedre's Instagram RELATED EPISODES  #466: How Gut Health Affects Hormones With Steven Wright #432: What Role Does The Gut Play In Mood And Brain Health With Tina Anderson #408: The Tools You Need To Upgrade Your Gut Health For Your Mood, Metabolism, And Hormones With Dr. Megan Rossi #267: The Gut Hormone Connection And What You Can Do To Start Healing Your Gut Today With Tina Anderson #177: How To Boost Your Immune System By Healing Your Gut With Vincent Pedre Learn more about your ad choices. Tips for adding plants to a diet   How Food Connects to Our Emotional Wellbeing [2:10]   Nutrition has systemic benefits for every organ in our body. Gut bacteria do more than people realize. So what we feed them has a direct cause on how they can help us. Nutritionists today understand much better than in the past the connection between the gut and the brain. Hence the term gut instinct.   Food can not only taste amazing it can also do amazing things for the body. Megan shares the key principles of her book, How to Eat More Plants, and explains the difference between prebiotics and probiotics.   30-Plant Points a Week [12:07]   Megan shares findings from a U.S. research study that found people who ate more than 30 different plants a week had better gut health than those that ate the same ten veggies on repeat. It didn't matter if the person was a vegan or omnivore. It was the plant diversity that made the difference. Each different type of plant has hundreds of benefits for different gut bacteria.   If you only ate superfoods you would limit your bacterial diversity.   Tips for Adding Extra Plants to a Diet [22:19]   In her book, The Gut Health Doctor: An Easy-to-Digest Guide to Health from the Inside Out, Megan offers tips and tricks that help add more plants to a diet. With the advances in understanding the importance of the gut (including its bacterial contents) for human health, much interest and attention has been placed on how to eat to promote positive ‘gut health'. This has led to many exciting research questions and labs doing fascinating work. However, on the opposite side, it has led to a spike in opportunistic quacks to jump on the wave of enthusiasm and promote diets, supplements, testing kits and products that don't reflect the current evidence base. For those with gut symptoms (bloating, pain, irritable bowel, etc.) is it possible to include more vegetables and fiber without the pain? In this episode, gut health researcher at King's College London, Dr. Megan Rossi, discusses some simple heuristics to follow that will likely improve overall health, and promote positive gut health.
