Is your diet keeping you sick? Dr. James Loomis is a whole-food, plant-based internal medical practitioner spreading the message that food is the best way to combat illness and disease. After experiencing a decline in his own health, Dr. Loomis made the switch and saw miraculous results: a significant drop in weight, cholesterol, and blood pressure in under three months. He says that most problems that walk into his office can be traced back to inflammation and stress, often resulting from the Standard American Diet. The former internist for both the St. Louis Cardinals and Rams now serves as the Medical Director of the Barnard Medical Center and advocates for using food -- over prescriptions -- as medicine. In this episode, Dr. Loomis joins Alexandra and Dotsie to explain exactly how what we eat works to either heal or harm our bodies. You'll hear why whole foods are the best way to combat inflammation, why manipulation by the dairy industry is so dangerous, and how you can get empowered to critically evaluate medical research on your own. This is a must-hear episode to understand why eating whole foods is as important as eating plant-based for your health. “90% of the problems that walk into this office are fundamentally related to food, how we move, and stress. Almost all will respond to a whole-foods plant-based diet.” - Dr. James Loomis What we discuss in this episode: - Dotsie and Dr. Loomis's experience presenting to athletes in Atlanta and some good signs of progress - The health crisis that encouraged Dr. Loomis to make the switch and the amazing benefits he saw within three months - Chronic disease can often be traced back to inflammation and stress. How is the Standard American Diet keeping us sick? - How a whole-foods plant-based diet will heal your gut - The lies behind “bro science” and how athletes are working to lead by example - Busting myths around the obsession with protein and calcium: IGF-1's connection to cancer, over-consumption of protein lowering the PH of our blood, and why most people become lactose intolerant by age 5 - The science behind inflammation: Why you need to decrease your Omega-6 intake, increase your Omega-3 intake, and eliminate highly processed foods - The truth behind the popular Chocolate Milk and Butter studies - How to better critically evaluate medical and nutritional research, plus suggested resources from Dr. Michael Greger and David L. Angela is joined by Dr. Neil Barnard to discuss the benefits of a plant-based diet, particularly focusing on the health implications of avoiding meat and dairy products. Dr. Barnard explains how fibre, found in plant-based foods, plays a crucial role in reducing cholesterol levels and aiding in weight loss. He emphasises the importance of essential amino acids from plant sources over animal protein for overall health. Angela and Dr Barnard also delve into the impact of saturated fats on cholesterol levels and the link between animal products and diseases like Alzheimer's KEY TAKEAWAYS A plant-based diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans has been shown to promote weight loss effectively. Foods like blueberries, cruciferous vegetables, green leafy vegetables, melons, citrus fruits, and beans are particularly beneficial for weight management. Saturated fat intake, primarily from animal products like dairy and meat, has been linked to an increased risk of health issues such as Alzheimer's disease. Avoiding saturated fats and focusing on plant-based sources of essential nutrients can significantly improve overall health. Insulin resistance, often caused by the accumulation of fat particles in muscle cells, can lead to persistent high blood sugar levels. Eliminating animal products and reducing added oils from the diet can help improve insulin sensitivity and regulate blood sugar levels effectively. A balanced plant-based diet with fats comprising less than 10% of total calories, complex carbohydrates as the main energy source, and adequate protein intake can support overall health and weight management without the need for strict calorie counting or macronutrient tracking. BEST MOMENTS "The protein in meat is inferior to plant protein." "The Mediterranean people were annoyed. They thought, I signed up for a research study, and I'm supposed to lose weight, and I'm not losing." "The answer to that is not to avoid healthy foods. The answer to that is to get the fat out of your cells." "Your body is designed to use glucose as its favourite fuel." Hormones control so much more in our bodies than we give them credit for. Thyroid hormones give us energy, insulin regulates our blood sugar, and of course, there are our sex hormones. And the food we eat can affect these in huge ways!Early menopause can occur in women as young as in their twenties, resulting in hot flashes and other uncomfortable side effects. A new study to be published by the North American Menopause Society in the October issue of the journal Menopause finds that a plant-based diet rich in soy can significantly reduce hot flashes.Neal Barnard, MD joins us this episode to talk more about this study. He is president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, founder of the Barnard Medical Center, an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine, and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. His federally funded diabetes research revolutionized the nutritional approaches to type 2 diabetes, and he now aims to empower readers with life-changing information on hormones and health. The study is already online and can be read here.
There is good news for women aged 45 and over: A new research study shows that women can get prompt relief from the most severe and troubling menopause symptoms without drugs. As many as 80% of postmenopausal women suffer from hot flashes. Heat wells up from the chest, causing flushing, sweating, and chills. At night, hot flashes interfere with sleep. Estrogen-based medications were once routinely used to treat hot flashes but have been shown to increase the risk of breast cancer and other serious problems. Isoflavone extracts from soybeans work only modestly, leaving women and their doctors with few effective options.A new study, published by the North American Menopause Society in the journal Menopause, found a powerful new diet approach that reduces moderate-to-severe hot flashes more than 80%, from nearly five per day to less than one per day. During the 12-week study, nearly 60% of women became totally free of moderate-to-severe hot flashes.Dr. Neal Barnard is president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, an Adjunct Professor at the George Washington University School of Medicine, and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. In 2016, he founded Barnard Medical Center in Washington, D.C., to create a new model that integrates nutrition into conventional medical care. His federally funded diabetes research revolutionized the nutritional approaches to type 2 diabetes. He has written 20 books on nutrition and health. He joins us today to talk more about this study. In 2016, he founded Barnard Medical Center in Washington, D.C., to create a new model that integrates nutrition into conventional medical care. His federally funded diabetes research revolutionized the nutritional approaches to type 2 diabetes, and he now aims to empower readers with life-changing information on hormones and health. He has written 19 books on nutrition and health. Did you know that the causes of a surprising range of health problems are hidden in everyday foods? Few people realize that a simple food prescription can help you tackle these problems and gently restore your hormone balance, with benefits rivaling medications. In his new book, Your Body in Balance, nutrition researcher and New York Times bestselling author Neal Barnard, MD, shares the science behind how common conditions—like infertility, weight gain, menopausal symptoms, breast and prostate cancers, thyroid problems, and acne—are fueled by hormones that are hidden in or influenced by the foods we eat food and hormones play a powerful role in fertility and menopause, sex-hormone related cancers, balancing the thyroid, type 2 diabetes, and regulating metabolism. He is the only physician who has conducted breakthrough research on how foods influence hormones and the problems they can cause. For more information please visit:PCRM.org/YourBodyInBalance

Jim Loomis, MD is Medical Director of the Barnard Medical Center, and one of the stars of the blockbuster documentary The Game Changers. Dr Loomis' journey to plant-based practice for himself and his patients began with a viewing of Forks Over Knives, at a time when his own health was starting to fail. Once he discovered and benefited personally from Lifestyle Medicine, he began to see that the paradigm of human health he had been taught was seriously flawed. He summed it up this way: "If I'm not sick, then I must be well."
