In this episode, we delve into NATO's medical readiness for large-scale conflicts, addressing pressing questions about preparedness and challenges in the face of hybrid and cyber threats. Also, how NATO adapts its strategies to meet these complex needs of contemporary warfare. We'll address lessons from recent conflicts—Ukraine, Afghanistan, and Iraq—and how these experiences have shaped NATO's unified approach to combat medicine. From mass casualty management to the integration of cutting-edge innovations like telemedicine, robotics, and AI, we discuss the systems and technologies that underpin NATO's ability to respond effectively. The importance of collaboration and interoperability takes centre stage as we explore how NATO trains medics and aligns medical equipment across diverse member nations. Additionally, we examine how NATO balances military medical readiness with supporting civilian populations in conflict zones, leveraging partnerships with civilian healthcare systems to enhance preparedness. Finally, we tackle ethical and humanitarian considerations, shedding light on psychological resilience, the mental health of medical teams, and the challenges of providing care to both allies and adversaries. To do this I have Tim Hodgetts with me. Tim was the recently serving Surgeon General of the United Kingdom Armed Forces, the Master General of the Army Medical Services, and the elected Chair of the Committee of Chiefs of Military Medical Services in NATO. The U.S. Congress is preparing for the possibility of a major “mass casualty event” that could dramatically change its makeup. With recent assassination attempts, rising geopolitical tension, and increasingly heated public discourse, lawmakers are considering drastic steps, including a possible Constitutional Amendment that would allow for the direct appointment of House representatives in the event of mass vacancies. Furthermore, the Russian government has announced changes to its nuclear doctrine due to NATO's encroachment and U.S. policies. It's time for Americans to do some serious soul-searching, put away their biases and their identity politics, and see what is happening. The certainty of a New World Order seems to be moving faster. A compelling narrative of frontline experience can provide valuable insights and lessons, contributing to improvements in combat casualty care. The importance of 'perfect practice' is highlighted as a key to achieving excellence in the medical field, especially in high-pressure situations. The evolution of military medicine has seen a convergence of medical expertise and military discipline, which has led to more effective healthcare for both military and civilian populations. Multidisciplinary tumor boards play a vital role in cancer patient care, emphasizing the importance of a team-based approach to healthcare. Continuous training and preparation are crucial for medical professionals, particularly those deployed in combat zones. Writing and sharing personal experiences can help medical professionals process their experiences and understand their roles better. Deployed medical professionals face unique challenges and require certain skill sets that differ from those used in traditional hospital settings. My guest today is Dr. Kevin Menes.  Kevin is an emergency room physician and tactical team doctor who led a team that managed to treat and save hundreds of patients following the active sniper attack in Las Vegas on October 1, 2017.  Kevin's insights into the Las Vegas attack are unique and offer us clear lessons learned in preparing for mass casualty. Too often active shooter preparation ends at the tactical level and fails to consider the effect on all involved agencies.  This discussion with Kevin clearly shows that saving lives after a mass killing event is dependent upon the preparation and training for all of the responding organizations.Books RecommendedThe Mission, the Men, and Me - Pete Blaber - ISBN-13:‎ 978-0425236574The Way Things Work - David Macaulay  - ISBN: 0-395-42857-2The Floaters Log - Ron Krome - ISBN-13: ‎ 978-142418282Sites RecommendedKevin Menes, MD | Emergency Physicians Monthly (epmonthly.com)Contact InfoEmail: iamkevinmenes@gmail.com Instagram: @menes.resuscitation Facebook: menes.resuscitation LinkedIn: Kevin Menes MD Twitter: @kvnmns

With her extensive experience in handling mass casualty incidents, Vickie's insights and resilience serve as an inspiration to us all. Although Vickie broke several bones in her face during a tank accident and faced many obstacles and trauma during her military career, she's developed healthy coping mechanisms that have kept her mentally and physically fit. Vickie is a big proponent of preventative therapy and also discussed her new book in progress on adversity and well-being. Vickie Lanthier's career as a master corporal in the armed forces exposed her to the harsh realities of mass casualty incidents. Whether it was in war-torn regions or disaster-stricken areas, she faced situations that most of us can only imagine. Through her first-hand experiences, Vickie witnessed the fragility of life and the strength of the human spirit. During our conversation, Vickie shared accounts of the challenges she encountered while navigating chaotic and life-threatening circumstances. She emphasized the critical importance of preparedness, both physically and mentally, in dealing with mass casualty incidents as well as building in “buffers” for each dimension of our lives. From staying calm under pressure to making quick decisions, she stressed the significance of training and maintaining a focused mindset during such emergencies. Surviving mass casualty incidents requires more than just physical endurance; it necessitates the courage to make bold decisions in the face of uncertainty. Vickie discussed how she had to summon her inner strength and take risks in order to save lives and ensure the safety of her team. These moves were often instinctual, requiring her to think on her feet and act swiftly. However, Vickie's lessons in boldness and courage extend far beyond her experiences in the field. She highlighted the importance of embracing courage in our everyday lives, empowering listeners to step outside their comfort zones and pursue their dreams with unwavering determination. Vickie shared her personal finance journey and how she made difficult financial decisions in her 40s to improve her financial well-being. Vickie's personal journey serves as a testament to the incredible things that can be achieved when we are willing to take risks and make bold moves. A Gwinnett County Sheriff's deputy has been placed on administrative leave and is expected to be fired after he was involved in an accident while driving under the influence, according to the Sheriff's Office. The Gwinnett County Sheriffs Office said Master Deputy Sheriff Walter Pollock was on duty when the accident occurred. The Georgia State Patrol arrested Pollock and charged him with driving under the influence, failure to maintain lane and striking a fixed object. The GSP is continuing to investigate the accident. No one was injured during the accident, according to the Sheriffs Office. 13-year-old Karam Alkhatib won the Best Film Overall award at the Gwinnett County Public Library's Student Film Festival with his stop-motion animation film "The Airforce's". Alkhatib, a student at Osborne Middle School in Hoschton, was inspired to take up the hobby during the COVID pandemic, and taught himself through online tutorials. His mother Sue praised his determination and hard work, and Alkhatib plans to use his $500 prize to create more films with bigger sets and longer storylines. Liam Gottimer, the voice of the Atlanta Gladiators joins us for our Glads update.  Gwinnett County officials plan to use eminent domain to acquire two adjacent pieces of land next to the Maguire-Livsey House, a historic property in the Promised Land community that was acquired by the county six-and-a-half years ago with plans to turn it into a historical park. The Livsey family, who gave the county the house, has accused officials of lowballing them on a price to pay for the land and of trying to negotiate with Thomas Livsey, the 93-year-old unofficial "Mayor of the Promised Land," while his health was in decline. Family members see the move as an attempt to take the land from a Black family rather than paying a fair price. The fight over the land carries racial undertones. Supporters of the family also said they are dismayed by the county's actions. Former state legislator Donna McLeod said she's disappointed in the county's Black leaders who broke color barriers when they came into their respective offices between 2018 and 2020.
