June 19th, 1865, marked the first Juneteenth celebrations. Formerly enslaved Americans living in Texas got the official word that they were free men and women that day -- more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Parades, and festivals will mark this year's federal holiday with community observances nationwide sharing the story of Juneteenth. But until relatively recently for many Americans, the holiday was unheard of, including for Kim Taylor author of A Flag for Juneteenth, "In 2014 I went to a party with a friend to celebrate Juneteenth, and at that time I hadn't heard of Juneteenth. My parents didn't know about it, they didn't teach it, and it wasn't a part of my school curriculum." Many schools didn't teach about the holiday, and it's a story that is not necessarily easy to explain to children. But some children's book authors have managed to talk about the joyful celebration while tackling the uncomfortable reality of the history. "I wanted to sure that people saw themselves. That there was a little girl like me who wanted to know more about Juneteenth, she saw herself in that story," said Dr. Arlisha Norwood, talking about her book, The History of Juneteenth: A History Book for New Readers. "It's soldiers and freedom and slavery; all really complicated issues for children. And so, my approach to writing it was, I was writing for myself, the six-year-old Arlisha Norwood who wanted to know more about Juneteenth." Carole Boston Weatherford, author of Juneteenth Jamboree, told Under the Radar, "What I try to do is just give them details that will paint a picture, but won't provide necessarily the scary parts, or the parts they're not ready to process. In this book, I don't talk at all about what slavery was like, I talk about what finding freedom was like. I have other books that get into more details about slavery. But I think with any children's book you figure out which details you want to include for the story you want to tell and the audience you want to share the story with." GUESTS Kim Taylor, speech-language pathologist at the Lexington School for the Deaf in New York City, textile artist and author of ‘A Flag for Juneteenth' Dr. Arlisha Norwood, assistant professor at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and author of “The History of Juneteenth: A History Book for New Readers” Carole Boston Weatherford, professor of English at Fayetteville State University, author of “Juneteenth Jamboree,” and 70+ books
Kim Taylor shares A Flag for Juneteenth, a unique and powerful story of the celebration of the first Juneteenth, from the perspective of a young girl. BOOK DESCRIPTION: A Flag for Juneteenth by Kim Taylor Expert quilter Kim Taylor shares a unique and powerful story of the celebration of the first Juneteenth, from the perspective of a young girl. On June 19, 1865, in Galveston, General Gordon Granger of the Union Army delivered the message that African Americans in Texas were free. Since then, Juneteenth, as the day has come to be known, has steadily gained recognition throughout the United States. ln 2020,a powerful wave of protests and demonstrations calling for racial justice and equality brought new awareness to the significance of the holiday. A Flag for Juneteenth depicts a close-knit community of enslaved African Americans on a plantation in Texas, the day before the announcement is to be made that all enslaved people are free. Young Huldah, who is preparing to celebrate her tenth birthday, can't possibly anticipate how much her life will change that Juneteenth morning. The story follows Huldah and her community as they process the news of their freedom and celebrate together by creating a community freedom flag. Debut author and artist Kim Taylor sets this story apart by applying her skills as an expert quilter. Each of the illustrations has been lovingly hand sewn and quilted, giving the book a homespun, tactile quality that is altogether unique. NOTABLE QUOTES: (12:19) “So I wrote a little story just really to help young people, students, and some adults know a little bit more about the history of Juneteenth. But it wasn't a book idea yet. It was really just sort of a story to help me explain my quilts.” (14:22) “When I was a little girl, I was an avid reader. I mean, really, literally everything I could get my, anything I could get my hands on. I love to read. But I also recognize that while I was reading, I was taken to so many amazing places and I was able to use my imagination and ama, um, guess what the characters look like and you know, really see them.” (15:42) “One of the things I wanted my readers to do was to connect deeply with the characters. I wanted them to care about the characters. But more than anything else, I wanted them to see themselves in the characters.” (18:52) “Sometimes when we talk about the time of enslavement, we think about a group of people having a shared collective experience, which is true, but we failed to look at the individuals in that story.” (20:06) “I wasn't just writing about a time, I was writing about people.” (21:22) “They had families and they tried really hard to make sure they connected with their families. And it wasn't always easy to do that outside of their labor. And they didn't have a lot of time, a lot of free time to be with their families, but they worked really hard to figure out how to do that.” (24:48) “I'd like for you to make this promise to yourself that you will always remember that Black history is American history and that we are all very important and that that time in history is important, just like any other time in history. It's really important to be always curious and always wanna learn more.” ADDITIONAL LINKS: Kim Taylor Website - MaterialGirlStoryQuilts.com Purchase the Book - A Flag for Juneteenth TALK ABOUT THE EPISODE: What is Juneteenth? What two words are combined together to make the name of the holiday? What celebration does Juneteenth seek to preserve? Kim Taylor talks about intentionally leaving off the faces of her characters in her quilts as an opportunity for readers to see themselves in a book. Can you recall an experience of connecting to a book character so closely it felt as if you were being seen? What book were you reading? Over what experience or quality or characteristic did you connect? Kim is not only an expert quilter, she uses the medium to tell stories. Explore some of the quilts on Kim's portfolio page and consider what stories she is telling through her craft. Episode 41: Hidden Addiction Too many times we stereotype what an addict is “supposed” to look like. Would you be shocked to find out a deacon or elder in your church was entrenched in a drug addiction? In this episode, John Stroup speaks with Brad and Kim Taylor about how Brad's struggle with a pain pill addiction led to an out-of-control dependency on drugs. It nearly destroyed his life and drastically changed their normal. This podcast episode is an example of what can happen when a family stops enabling, and an individual surrenders to God. Sarah speaks with Kim Taylor Blakemore about her historical fiction novel, The Deception: "New Hampshire, 1877. Maud Price was once a celebrated child medium, a true believer in lifting the veil between the living and the dead. Now penniless, her guiding spirits gone, the so-called “Maid of Light” is desperate to regain her reputation—but doing so means putting her faith in deceiving others. Clementine Watkins, known in spiritualist circles for her bag of tricks and utmost discretion, creates the sort of theatrics that can fill Maud's parlor again, and with each misdirection, Maud's fame is restored. But her guilt is a heavy burden. And the ruse has become a risk. Others are plotting to expose the fraud, and Clem can't allow anyone—even Maud—to jeopardize the fortune the hoax has made her. When the deception hints at a possible murder, Maud realizes how dangerous a game she's playing. But to return to the light from which she's strayed, she must first survive the darkness created by Clem's smoke and mirrors." They also talk about the first book (writing as K.T. Blakemore) in a new series. The series is Wild-Willed Women of the West and the book is The Good Time Girls: "In 1905 Kansas, ex-dancehall girl and outlaw Ruby Calhoun has settled into a (mostly) quiet and (mostly) lawful life. But out of the blue her past comes hustling into town when her ex-friend and ex-dancehall partner, Pip, shows up with a grim message and dangerous mission: Cullen Wilder, an old enemy with a long memory, wants them dead and the only way to survive is to kill him first. With Cullen's henchman hot on their heels, Ruby and Pip hightail into the hinterlands of Kansas to save another friend from Cullen's vengeance. Unprepared for the journey, their trip is filled with mishaps and mayhem, blunders and bounders, con artists and the circling noose of the law. Through it all, Ruby is tormented by the memories of her life years ago in Arizona Territory, when the upstairs girls at the Paradise Saloon and Dancehall kept her safe, and the dreadful day when it all went wrong. Will Ruby have the guts to face her turbulent past, or will she cut and run like a coward one more time?" Today I speak with novelist Kim Taylor Blakemore about her recent book The Deception. A sleight of hand. A trick up the sleeve. A call for the dead. It's all part of the game in this twisty tale by the bestselling author of After Alice Fell. New Hampshire, 1877. Maud Price was once a celebrated child medium, a true believer in lifting the veil between the living and the dead. Now penniless, her guiding spirits gone, the so-called “Maid of Light” is desperate to regain her reputation—but doing so means putting her faith in deceiving others. Why a Cider Tour Bus is better than going Solo The obvious reason why taking a bus tour vs driving on your own to visit French cidermakers is that you can imbibe! But wait there is more! In this episode 339, the guest on the 2022 French Cider Tour to Normandy, Brittany and Domfrontais will tell you why a cider tour bus is better than going solo as we roll along the countryside on our final leg of the journey. Our Cider Bus Our beautiful luxury bus was driven by a very capable driver by the name of David, who was game for taking the back roads and mini detours that weren't on the original itinerary. With David driving and watching the route and foreign roads signs, we could sit back and raise a glass of French cidre, poire, Calvados, Pommeau, Chouchen, and even a bottle of English Brandy all day long. In the way back of our bus were two tables that folks enjoyed sitting at and sharing cheese, bread, macaroons and other local nibbles as we rolled along the French Countryside. It should be noted that due to the low alcohol by volume of most French cidres (around 4.5-5%) one could have a glass and remain clear headed. In this episode 339 Having fun on the cider bus Hear from the guest on the bus as we slowly make our way back to Paris on the final day of our tour. There were 6 commercial cidermakers from both the US and Canada, along with cider fans and home fermenters. Kim Taylor-Thompson, NYU Professor of Clinical Law Emerita and Editor of "Progressive Prosecution" joins host, Carol Jenkins to discuss how race shapes and misshapes the injustice in this country and her role in changing that.
The Deception is about life and death and the delicate veil between the two. The story spirals around an Illusionist running from her past, and a Medium whose past fame and spirit guide have abandoned her. The pliable Maud (the Medium known as the Maid of Light) and the clever Clementine (a master of tricks and illusions) join forces to find fame and fortune, but at what cost… does the end justify the means? Listen as author Kim Taylor Blakemore shares how she scoured history to find her own muses for this tale of authenticity and duplicity. We talk about how she delivers readers to an 1870's New England that was romanced by spiritualism. We discuss her seductive and charming characters and rainy rainy setting with shades of gray ethics that will seep into your very bones.
