Summary: In this episode, Justin Townsend and Adam Berkelmans discuss the evolving landscape of hunting in North America, focusing on the rise of food-focused hunters and urban deer hunting. They are joined by AJ DeRosa, who shares his insights on urban deer hunting, the importance of food in hunting culture, and the unique culinary experiences that come with wild game. The conversation explores the challenges and opportunities in modern hunting, conservation policies, and the stories that connect hunters and non-hunters alike. In this conversation, the speakers delve into various topics related to hunting, cooking, and conservation. They discuss the value of bear meat and fat, innovative cooking techniques using indigenous ingredients, and the underappreciated culinary potential of octopus. The conversation transitions into the origins and growth of Project Upland, emphasizing its authenticity and commitment to ethical hunting practices. The speakers also address the challenges facing hunting and conservation today, including the need for a more responsible approach to wildlife management and the importance of acknowledging the impact of lead in hunting. In this conversation, AJ discusses the evolving landscape of hunting, emphasizing the need for the community to embrace scientific truths and adapt to changing practices. He highlights the curiosity of younger hunters, the challenges of recruitment through the R3 program, and the integral role of food in hunting culture. AJ also delves into the political aspects of conservation, arguing that the narrative surrounding hunting has been skewed by partisan politics. He advocates for diplomacy and collaboration among hunters and conservationists to ensure the future of hunting rights and wildlife management. - Leave a Review of the Podcast - Buy our Wild Fish and Game Spices The Art of Venison Sausage Making Guest: AJ DeRosa Instagram Project Upland Instagram Project Upland Website Takeaways: Wild food is reshaping the way we think about hunting. Grouse hunting offers a unique culinary experience compared to big game hunting. Learning to handle wild game properly is essential for quality cooking. Diversity in wild game offers a rich culinary experience. Bear fat is highly valued for its culinary uses. Innovative cooking can elevate traditional ingredients. Octopus is an underappreciated delicacy that deserves more attention. Project Upland originated from a desire to spend more time hunting. Younger hunters are more curious and engaged with ecological issues. The narrative around hunting needs to be reframed. Community engagement is crucial for the future of hunting. In this episode, Gabby and AJ talk to Mark Avery, author of A Message from Martha. As a biologist and conservationist, Mark takes us back in time to reconstruct the biology, habitat, and final era of the Passenger Pigeon. The Passenger Pigeon's extinction is one of the most dramatic extinction stories of the 20th century, resulting in the loss of the most numerous bird on Earth. This episode explores everything from nesting biology and historical accounts to habitat destruction and the last Passenger Pigeon to die in captivity at the Cincinnati Zoo—Martha.Listen to past episodes here: Project Upland PodcastIf you want to support independent journalism, check out the Project Upland Podcast Patreon.Read more at projectupland.com.
Project Upland's annual North American Upland Bird Hunting Survey ended earlier this year. What better way to share our data than by starting a brawl over the most popular bird dog breeds? The hunting dog world is full of personal biases, and our survey results reflected our community's diverse preferences. When asked, “What type of hunting dogs do you own?,” 53.69% of respondents said pointing, 32.84% said versatile, 19.37% said retriever, 11.11% said spaniel, and 1% said hound. Although pointing dogs have retained the #1 spot seven years in a row, the number of versatile dog owners has increased slightly and the number of spaniel and retriever owners have decreased slightly. We won't let our dog breed snobbery enter the chat, but personally, we're always happy to see pointing and versatile dogs in the number one and two spots, respectively.
Today we had the pleasure of hanging out with Will Newell from Project Upland. We kick off the show hearing about how Will got into hunting as a young man and how impactful dogs have been on his life. We transition into some discussion about Project Upland, their projects they're working on and SEWE, which we've spoken about before on Lone Duck. One of the coolest parts of our conversation with Will is when we discuss the trial Bob is helping to judge down in South Carolina called St. Hubert's Field Trial at H. Cooper Black. If you run bird dogs or if you love hunting, then you should check it out! A big shout out to Will for jumping on our show and sharing a few laughs. Do yourself a favor and follow all the awesome work Project Upland is doing and tell Will we sent ya. So what if my dog has a wiggle butt and flags a bit on point? It's kinda cute and still gets meat to the frying pan. If that's the case and your dog will efficiently hunt, locate plenty of birds for you and stand point, I would happily agree with you. More often than not, however, it will affect your hunt in some aspect as it's a symptom of underlying holes in your bird dog training. It could develop into, amongst other things, a restrictive search, blinked retrieves, self hunting, ripping birds, stealing points and retrieves—which not only limits productivity in the field, it guarantees relentless ribbing from your hunting buddies. In my last Project Upland article, we discussed some of the nuances of reading your bird dog's body language and figuring out what they are trying to tell you. I referenced flagging as a specific undesirable action in a pointing dog. Let's delve into that a little bit deeper to gain some understanding.

Inside a multi-million dollar mansion, I took a seat around a large wooden table in such pristine condition that I was afraid to touch it. A glass of water sat in front of each occupied seat, giving the space the air of a boardroom. The year was 2017, and my unfamiliar surroundings gave me the sense that I was struggling to translate my idea of what Project Upland Magazine should be. “We have to change the name. It cannot be called Project Upland.”

Small Munsterlanders, fortunately for me, are one of the pointing dog breeds I've gotten to know in person. Feisty, handsome, and highly energetic, this breed is the tenth most popular bird dog breed in the Project Upland community, according to our annual survey. It's also the third most popular versatile hunting dog breed in Europe. This is likely due to their broad skillset that includes searching, pointing, flushing, retrieving, tracking, and water work.

Abbott is an avid and passionate horse and dog lover and she wanted to keep Don, Tom and Nancy's legacies alive as well. Abbott's main goal was to expand Field Trial and Bird Dog stories throughout the entire year. She made plans to expand the publication beyond the annual special issue and transitioned it into a magazine. In October of 2022 the Field Trial Review officially rebranded to Hunt & Field Magazine. Hunt & Field will continue it's exposure of the National Championships and publish quarterly, highlighting all bird, gun, and hunting dog sports, along with horse field sports. Abbott's vision is to produce a high quality magazine for the sporting south. Hunt & Field's first rebranded issue will publish at the end of February recapping the 124th National Championships. It will highlight the 2023 National Champion, all the dogs contending for the Championship, the owners and handlers. It will also feature Historic Ames Plantation, Quail populations, Forestry & Conservation efforts as well as Deer related diseases and more. Woodcock banding involves federally inspected handlers and their dogs finding and safely netting woodcock hens and their chicks in order to band them and study their population. Nearly fifty years after the birth of field trials, voting rights were granted to women in 1920. This milestone prompted a general shift in views around women's liberties. Women began riding astride, wearing jodhpurs, adopting shorter hairstyles, and, by the 1930s, it was all the vogue for women to wear trousers. Until then, practically the only female names that made the pages of the American Field weekly magazine were those of winning Setters and Pointers like Sioux, La Besita, Mary Montrose and Becky Broom Hill. Just as in the written accounts, the paintings depicting upland shooting and field trials were all of men. Before long, however, women started to make their mark in American Field trials. The influence and early involvement of women in the sport is indisputable. Wives of early professional trainers made the long, arduous journey to the Canadian prairies to spend their summers in makeshift training camps, feeding and caring for their husbands, families, and the help that accompanied them north. Wives and daughters of wealthy patrons and field trial club directors became enthusiastically involved as owners of dogs as well as in the administration and running of field trials.

A.J. DeRosa is the founder of Project Upland — a multi-media operation that produces, in addition to video and web-based content, a quarterly, subscription-based premium print magazine. He's also the author of the deer hunting cult-classic, The Urban Deer Complex. An accomplished hunter, rabid conservationist, and success in the hunting industry, he is not your typical hunter. Whether it's his politics, which are woven as a through-line throughout his unique positions, or his insistence on activism as a key component of conservation, he occupies a space adjacent — and sometimes quite antithetical — to those typified by what could be seen as an often monolithic mindset amongst those that hunt or fish. Daniel is someone who's often felt like an outsider in the world of hunting, frequently expressing views that run counter to those of his fellow outdoorsman, and A.J. is altogether more revolutionary in his approach. When we first met and heard him speak, it was a surprisingly refreshing, if not sometimes challenging, stream of consciousness we hadn't heard expressed in hunting circles before. Being some 6% or less of the American public, those of us that hunt, understandably, have more often than not, chosen to silo ourselves and as a result, have suffered from a kind of slow progress with respect to the rest of the public at large. But A.J. is different. Different than any hunter or conservationist Daniel has sat down with yet. Don't expect a rehashing of the same old talking points here. He's not that guy. But, he might just be the foreshadowing of the voice of the future hunter. As a new generation inherits the 3 million-year-old tradition, they bring to it new ideas, paradigms, ways of viewing the world, ecology, our predatory presence in it, and our place in the grand scheme of ecological diversity. Change is scary, and often easier to resist than embrace. A lot of us behave like a dog on a leash. Pull back too much, and the dog feels the urge to push forward against the pressure. That's the knee-jerk response a lot of the hunting world has taken to the changing cultural, economic, scientific, and ecological landscape we are encountering in this rapidly evolving decade and the ones preceding it. We dig in and resist change. But this is, in our opinion, the wrong approach. At least, it's an approach that always seems to — eventually — give way to progress regardless. So, if you hear ideas expressed here today that run counter to those you hear at the range, hunting box store, or in hunting camp, know you are, most likely, hearing the voice of the future. However threatening to status quo it might be. Resistance is, after all, futile. We'll all be assimilated. Seriously though, change is coming, it's inevitable. And what is most important isn't the way we have been doing it, but rather, preserving our relationship to the natural world. Let's welcome all ideas, even the radical ones. Even the ones that scare us. Even the ones that challenge our most closely held illusions. If we don't, the world will surely pass us by. If we can't thread the needle of holding onto what we cherish and allowing ourselves to adapt to change, we — as hunters — might just go the way of the passenger pigeon. Change is coming. How will we adapt? View full show notes, including links to resources from this episode here: https://www.wild-fed.com/podcast/172

Jason Carter is the owner and operator of Merry Meeting Kennels, professional trainer, author for Project Upland and a teacher. He fits perfectly into our theme on The Journey: teach, train and learn. The Journey, on the Houndsman XP Podcast Network, is all about bettering the hounds we hunt. That starts with the decision to breed and the crosses we make. Jason recently wrote an article about making the hard decision on not breeding your dog. When you cherish the hounds you run and want to carry those memories through time it's a common practice to try and replicate those hounds. Heath and Jason start at the decision that drives us to breed our hounds. What is it that we are looking to accomplish by breeding and some ways to evaluate that decision? This is a hard conversation, as Heath and Jason discuss, that is sometimes avoided. This is a must listen if you have dogs and are interested in continuing to hunt. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/373 Presented By: FishHound Expeditions, Jackson Hole Fly Company, Range Meal Bars, Angler's Coffee Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors Nick Larson, Host of the Birdshot Podcast, gives us a bird hunting 101 today. We break down the types of birds you can target, where to find them, and their differences in behavior. He tells us what is the best shotgun to get started with, some useful tips to maintain your composure while shooting, and which gun to get next as you become a more experienced hunter. We discover how to hunt birds with or without dogs and how OnX maps change the game for upland bird hunting. Nick also shares the story of how he started his podcast which was not far from when we started our podcast too. Upland Bird Hunting Show Notes with Nick Larson 04:30 - Nick Larson's got a podcast - Birdshot Podcast 05:20 - Nick used to hunt upland birds without a dog - he tells us how dogs change the game 06:40 - Nick mentioned our episode with Terry Kluke at WFS 356 where we covered fly fishing and hunting in Ontario. Nick fished a lot in Ontario. 08:45 - They've got sharp-tailed grouse, ruffed grouse, pheasants, wood cock, prairie chickens, and spruced grouse 10:30 - Nick tells us how to get started with hunting - google a bird species and the state you're in, for ex: ruffed grouse Minnesota. Make sure you secure a hunting license from DNR and pay attention to the state rules and limits. Ruffed Grouse Management Area is a good resource to learn more about ruffed grouse hunting in Minnesota. 16:15 - Ruffed grouse season starts mid-September in Minnesota 18:20 - The best month to hunt grouse is the last 2 weeks of October and the first 2 weeks of November 20:15 - Nick has a friend with a grouse camp in Minnesota - Pineridge Grouse Camp 20:50 - Their firearms dear season usually starts the first Saturday of November 22:45 - Nick's got a hunt coming up in North Dakota and will primarily hunt sharp-tailed grouse 23:30 - Another bonus bird that they get a chance to hunt is the Hungarian Partridge - a non-native species 35:45 - Tip for sharp-tailed grouse: If your dog is on point, you're walking in and a bird flushes, keep walking until you see the group of birds. Don't shoot right away. 39:40 - Wingshooting is a term that is used as a broader term to include Waterfowl hunting or Dove hunting. Upland hunting generally refers to the upland game birds which are grouse, quail, pheasants, or Hungarian partridge, etc. 42:25 - Nick works for Upland Gun Company and they sell a very specific kind of gun. He doesn't recommend their gun if you're just getting started with hunting. 44:15 - He recommends a Remington 870 Express for beginners 45:50 - Nick likes a double gun, also known as an over/under, side by side, or a break-action gun. He tells us why. 48:10 - A 12-gauge gun is more common for all upland bird hunters but the more avid upland bird hunter uses a 20-gauge 51:20 - Their guns are made to order and the price starts at $2000 55:24 - Tip: Relax and maintain composure when you see a bird. You got more time than you think. 1:01:10 - Practice shooting at sporting clays 1:06:50 - Nick launched his podcast in September 2017. It used to be called, Project Upland and was only recently changed to Birdshot Podcast. 1:19:10 - OnX Hunt sponsors their podcast. They change the game big time for hunting. In this episode, Tyler sits down with Jennifer Wapenski, owner and breeder of the Deutsch Langhaar's. Jennifer is also part of Hunting Dog Confidential and Project Upland. Jennifer and Tyler discuss the breed and go over what the difference is between German Long Haired Pointers and Deutsch Langhaar's, the requirements/testing set forth by the Germans for breeding, how Jennifer chose the Deutsch Langhaar and more! The exciting part about the Deutsch Langhaar is that even in the U.S. we are still required to meet the German standards in order to continue breeding under the Deutsch Langhaar name. There are not many litters of pups in the U.S. each year but the nice part is that if you purchase a Deutsch Langhaar, you know it went through extensive testing and met the standards that have been set forth for many many years. I really enjoyed this conversation with Jennifer and learned alot about the Deutsch Langhaar.
Scott is the owner of Ron Schara Productions. One of the Upland Hunting shows they produce is called "The Flush". Scott lives in Minnesota but travels North America chasing everything with feathers. One of the most humble people i've ever met and a damn good bird hunter to boot. We talk about past dogs, past seasons, and what the future holds for us as bird hunters. I'm still amazed at what starting this podcast has done and the people i get to meet and have conversations with. I hope everyone enjoys this one.
