Certain parts of the United States will soon experience a surge of visitors, but they may not be the typical visitors we're used to seeing.  Billions, even trillions of cicadas, will emerge from the ground in some areas as two overlapping Broods come out to mate.  Are you not even sure what that means? And how will it affect your parks and landscaping? No problem. We have you covered. This episode of the Productive Parks 5-Minute Podcast is all about cicadas. Learn more about this interesting insect and how it is probably more beneficial than harmful to your assets…that is, with a little preparation.  We'll discuss what to do before the cicadas emerge and how your agency can adjust and temporarily coexist with these loud, but mostly harmless insects.   ___________________________________________________________________________ The Productive Parks 5-Minute Podcast is for busy professionals working to change the game in Parks and Recreation. New Hope Daily SOAP - Daily Devotional Bible Reading

Today's Scripture: https://www.bible.com/en-GB/bible/111/LUK.16.NIV Welcome to the Daily SOAP from New Hope.  This is Paul Brooks, your guest host for today.  I hope you are having a good day.      Today we will explore Luke 16.  If you haven't read it yet, you might want to do so now.  I will be focusing on Luke 16:1-15 and, specifically, Luke 16:9 from the NIV version.    Scripture – Luke 16:9: [Jesus said,] “I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.”   I am drawing here a passage from The Parable of the Shrewd Manager.  Let me set the stage.  We learned in Luke 15:1-2 the following: 1Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus.  2But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”  We can surmise from a passage later in Luke 16 that The Parable of the Shrewd Manager was shared at this same time.  So, Jesus is speaking to the detestable tax collectors and other sinners (like us) and is teaching about “true” wealth versus “earthly” wealth while the Pharisees sneer at Him.    Like some other parables, this one made me think twice.  In it, a rich man calls in the manager of his estate, accuses him of wasting his possessions, and summarily fires him.  The manager, worried about his future, then proceeds to contact his master's debtors and forgive large portions of their debts.  He does this to curry favor, hoping that his future will be better for that favor.  These are debts owed to his master, not to him personally.  In our world, this would set off a string of police filings, lawsuits, legal expenses, social media rampaging, and overall ugliness.  Yet in this lesson, the master actually commends the manager for these actions because he had acted shrewdly.  Jesus goes on to say, “8For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light.  9I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.”    What is Jesus saying to us here?  This sounds confusing.  I think he is contrasting our way of life as “People of the world” with the life we should lead as “People of the light”:     Our Earthly World – “People of the world” Shrewdness often means figuring out how to get more out of others for our own benefit.       Take care of yourself at others' expense.    The Goal is to attain worldly wealth and other “valuables”.    Jesus's Perfect World – “People of the light” Shrewdness is blessing others who, like us, have debts to pay – just as He blessed us and forgave our debts through his birth, death, and resurrection.   Take care of yourself by living like Jesus.      The Goal is to follow His Commandments and Example, and so attain eternal life with Him.     On its face, this seems to be a money-related lesson.  Jesus ends this parable as follows: 13 “No one can serve two masters.  Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other.  You cannot serve both God and money.”  But there is more to this lesson than simply money.    Luke goes on to write in verses 14 and 15: 14The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus.  15[Jesus] said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts.  What people value highly is detestable to God.”  This, in my opinion, goes well beyond money.  What did the Pharisees value, and what does our society still value, in addition to money?  We value respect.  We value status.  We value power.  We value consideration.  We value positive feedback.  We value like-mindedness.  We value things that build us up on the eyes of other human beings.  We lock them in the treasure chest of our souls.  Sometimes we count them.  And where we have been “slighted” or “shorted” or “affronted”, we write that down and track it as one of those worldly debts.  It's all part of our personal “portfolio” … our “treasures.”    But what does Jesus tell us to value?  The list is long, but it starts here, from Matthew 22:37-40: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.  This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like unto it, love your neighbor as yourself.  On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”    In this season of Christmas, as we approach that glorious day after tomorrow when we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, maybe we should take a minute and think about those “treasures.”  Who owes us a worldly “debt”.  Who do we hold accountable for any of those worldly assets?  How can we forgive them of that burden, thus unburdening ourselves in the process? Wouldn't you treasure the gift of “forgiveness” by someone you had offended in some manner?  I know I would.  After all, God gave us the greatest gift of all – full free forgiveness and a welcome into “eternal dwellings” with Him.      As Jesus said in Matthew 6:19-20: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”    I invite you to pray this with me.    Almighty and most merciful Father.  I am too quick to focus my attention on the treasures of this world.  I store them in the vault of my soul and pull them out and count them as valuable items.  These “assets” include the “debts” I perceive others “owe” me.  Like money or status, I pull them out from time to time and recount them, often to make myself feel better, or more “righteous” in some way.  But, in reality, they tear me down.  Doing so is not what you command of me – to love others as myself.  I am sorry and I want to do better.  Please forgive me and help me be more like you.  As you forgive me, let me also forgive others of these worldly things, and in doing so glorify you.  And, even more so, let me be a blessing to my neighbors in other ways.  Let me be part of your ministries, bringing your Gospel, your help, your love to all who need them.  As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, help me remember that you came to be with us that we might know you, to listen to us, to walk in our shoes, to care for us, to teach us, to die for us, and through your resurrection, to live with us now and through eternity.  I pray this in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.    This has been the Daily SOAP from New Hope.  We hope you will join us to celebrate the birth of Jesus on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning or both.  But wherever you are, Celebrate!  God is with us!!  God is with you!!!  Rejoice!!!!   I'll leave you with a poem by Phillips Brooks titled, Christmas Everywhere.    Everywhere, everywhere, Christmas tonight!  Christmas in the lands of the fir-tree and pine, Christmas in the lands of the palm-tree and vine, Christmas where snow peaks stand solemn and white, Christmas where the cornfields stand sunny and bright.  Christmas where children are hopeful and gay, Christmas where old men are patient and gray, Christmas where peace, like a dove in flight, Broods o'er brave men in the thick of the fight;  Everywhere, everywhere, Christmas tonight! For the Christ-child who comes is the master of all; No palace too great, no cottage too small.    Paul Brooks . . . . . We hope you have a blessed Christmas! We invite you to worship with us this Christmas Eve at one of our Worship services, Saturday, December 24th at 3, 5, or 7 pm, in-person or online at https://www.findnewhope.com . And Christmas Day, Sunday, December 25th in English or Spanish at 11 am in-person or online. Go to findnewhope.com to plan your visit! Our staff and leadership employ what's called the “S.O.A.P. Method”. It stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. Each day, we read one or two chapters of Scripture and focus on one particular verse. We make some observations about how that verse touches us, discern how it applies to our lives, and offer a prayer related to what we have read. -- Donate via PayPal to support the podcasts and the Technical Arts Ministry of New Hope! https://goo.gl/o2a9oU Subscribe at: http://www.findnewhope.com/soap (813) 689-4161 keywords: devotional, bible study

We had the pleasure of interviewing BEGINNERS over Zoom video!Difficult times can make or break people. As a society, we've been going through doomsday fatigue, whether since the pandemic started, the Trump administration took office, or before that even. Some people have been struggling more than others for a long time. On top of it all, the rent is too damn high, our rights are falling away, the world is on fire (literally and figuratively), and it feels like everything is entirely out of control. The tiniest thing could be that last straw that separates any of us from our sanity. For BEGINNERS, the alt-pop project of L.A.-based Samantha Barbera, one way to deal with those feelings of despair made itself abundantly clear: say f*ck it. The extra indignant sting on top of everything inspired almost a superhero origin story, whether she's the hero or an agent of chaos to be seen. In addition to all that, Barbera went through a breakup during what felt like the implosion of the world we'd known while watching her rights as a queer woman shrink. Instead of imploding, she got into the studio. And that's how BEGINNERS' If the World Is Ending EP was conceived: as an explosion. Barbera is always writing songs, and putting this record together came after a steady stream of collaborations in studios all over the West Coast. The lead single, "I Hate That I Love Brooklyn," is a raucous anthem full of spikey punk rock guitar that represents the spikey feeling of a toxic relationship—with a person, with the news, with a whole damn city or country. The song started with a hat. No, literally. Producer/Artist and frequent collaborator Matias Mora (K. Flay, Broods, Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn,) had a blinged-out hat with the word Brooklyn on it and convinced everyone that it had to be where the song was set.For Barbera, collaboration is the key to success. She co-produced and co-wrote all of the songs, but those intimate moments of sharing her personal stories with her collaborators helped tap into a sense of connection that brings her art to life. Over eight months, the World is Ending EP was written and recorded in various home studios. BEGINNERS is a DIY project with punk roots spanning multiple scenes and genres. It has always been fully independent with no record label or advances, but with those all-important master rights and creative control. The project has seen massive success in the world of music syncs. Disney used the song "Start a Riot" in the trailer for the 2021animated feature Raya and the Last Dragon. It promoted outreach and interest from new fans worldwide who searched the song on the internet and commented en masse.Apple also tapped BEGINNERS for three ad campaigns, and New Balance had the band perform in a commercial alongside a slew of famous women Olympic athletes. The music has also been played in ads from Target, Samsung, and Adobe, plus in numerous shows including The Walking Dead, The L Word, and the Netflix series Money Heist and Elite. In Netflix's Sex/Life, the band got a name drop and a full, two-minute-long dance scene—an unheard-of placement. We want to hear from you! More often than not, in pain there lies a great beauty, and Kiwi indie pop dynamos Broods are no strangers to turning darkness into shimmering sonic gold. Emerging officially in 2013 under the moniker Broods, the compelling dynamic between brother-sister duo Georgia Nott and Caleb Nott is unsurprising, stemming back to the pair performing together as kids, while also being immersed in an extremely musical family in their formative years. And while the pair are already sitting pretty with over one billion streams of their material, 2022 is already gearing up to be another astronomical milestone, with the extremely anticipated release of their fourth studio album Space Island officially releasing today. Conjuring an immersive, ethereal and highly conceptual world on their brand new album, much of the inspiration behind Space Island stemmed from some significant personal lows and self-reflection, with Broods also embracing their most progressive songwriting to date as they traverse love, loss and heartache. And while the end result for Space Island perfectly lives up to its fantastical namesake, it also signals at the enduring connection both Georgia and Caleb possess, not just with each other, but with their fans who continue to remind them why they continue to chase this dream - and to talk all things Space Island and beyond, Georgia and Caleb join host Tiana Speter today to chat favourite instruments, songwriting, Aussie fan moments and beyond!IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS:How Georgia and Caleb really feel to be on the brink of release for their fourth studio album Space Island, and how this release compares to when they previously unveiled Don't Feed The Pop Monster back in 2019.When the seed for Space Island was planted, and the journey behind the name and overall concept for the album.Weaving personal experiences into Space Island, finding the "hint" that they were on the right track in the songwriting process and music as a universal meeting point.Caleb discusses spending most of his money on gear, and how the fortuitous purchase of an organ added new layers to the eventual end product of Space Island.Caleb and Georgia share some behind the scenes tales about the filming of their incredible music video for single Piece Of My Mind, and how the experience linked to grief and concepts behind Space Island. Some key songs on Space Island that Caleb and Georgia love on the album, as well how they built the album, why it's designed to be listened to in full from start to finish and how the curation links to their live showsHow the time forced by the pandemic away from the stage and seeing some other inspiring live shows recently has contributed to a shift in their own live show plans. The power of live music and the connectivity that a live performance extends to artists and fans alike. Why Australian fans are some of the best Broods fans in the world for Georgia and Caleb, as well as why the Aussie music industry excites them.A standout fan moment for Georgia that still keeps her going when things get tough (hint: it was in Brisbane!), and what Caleb and Georgia love most about this Broods journey after all this time. In this episode we talk with Dr. Gene Kritsky, who has authored or edited 10 books and over 250 papers on subjects as diverse as entomology, Egyptology, evolution, history of science, dinosaur biology, insect poetry and insect mythology. The Tears of Re: Beekeeping in Ancient Egypt is one of his Egyptology stories in a book, and Periodical Cicadas: The Brood X Edition was released this spring, just before Brood X began singing their mating songs (at up to 90 decibels at their peak) in the Eastern US this spring. He is the Dean, and a Professor in the department of Behavioral and Natural Sciences in Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio. In this incredible interview, he weaves all of these things together and ties them all into his love of bees and beekeeping. We start with a discussion of the Brood X cicadas this spring, and his new book about them, but wander in and through the history of developing the timing of all of the Broods of cicadas that exist, how are they related, and do they harm bees in anyway. Long ago he read Eva Crane's book on the history of hives, and that started his exploration of, and a book about, In Search of the Perfect Hive. As a Fulbright Scholar, he traveled to Egypt to teach entomology, and there he really got involved in their beekeeping styles, government's role and organization. He relates stories on Egypt's history of bees and beekeeping, hive styles, and yes, there has been honey found in Pyramids that is thousands of years old that is still edible. His definition of “beekeeping” is the intentional prevision of an artificial container in which bees can produce. Have you ever thought you would use the words “Insects” and “Mythology” in the same sentence? Gene does. He knows museums and can direct you to the sections that cover all of these subjects. The Anglo-Boer War

The scenes have shifted recently between the war in South Africa and the effect of the war in England. The press has begun to turn against the government with vitriolic attacks on war hero Sir Redvers Buller as we heard last week. There's more bad new for the government in the form of the Fawcett Commission made up of women sent to assess the Concentration Camps in South Africa. What liberal activist Emily Hobhouse had been decrying for months was about to be confirmed by a group of distinctly pro-Empire Englishwomen, much to the chagrin of some government officials. The death rates in these camps has been climbing constantly as they fill with more and more women and children. The camps for Black South Africans are even worse. Both camp systems were riddled with disease and abuse. The last straw for the commander in Chief, Lord Kitchener, had been the Benson smash up in the Eastern Transvaal I covered last week. While the military gains for the Boers was somewhat limited, the affect on their morale was indescribable. General Louis Botha had made Benson pay with his own life. Combine that with the news about the 17th Lancers squadron which had been decimated by Jan Smuts in the Cape and you can see why Kitchener was deep in the doldrums psychologically. It was so bad that Lord Roberts back home in England had dispatched his closest ally, Ian Hamilton, back to South Africa to keep an eye on Kitchener as his chief of staff. That had been in October 1901, by early November Hamilton felt like a square peg in a round hole. Ktichener had no need of a chief of staff - he kept everything in his head. This by the way, was to prove as disastrous to the British during the first world war as it had during the battle Paardeberg in the first phase of the Boer war. The Destruction of Benson's unit at Bakenlaagte had not been a complete disaster for the British, once Kitchener received the full report. Benson's rearguard had fought heroically and actually saved the entire column from being crushed. The Boers had lost General Opperman during that attack which was a major blow to Louis Botha. Kitchener's new grand strategy began to look more like Lord Milner's. This was to establish protected areas centred on Bloemfontein, Pretoria and Johannesburg, then progressively worked outwards clearing the entire country of all guerrillas and simultaneously restoring civilian life within the protected zones.

It's ridiculous they let us do this. The Rider this week is quorate. Stephanie Heneghan is back and she is no longer unwell. She is, in fact, well. Very well. More within. Neil Atkinson and John Gibbons have been to Berlin and are back to tell the tale. Has Adam climbed anything? I mean this all seems rather mundane but it's pretty much the most riotous 80 minutes of podcasting you can get. THRILL at John supporting Mary Beard. STAGGER at Steph's chest infection. BE INSPIRED by Sooty and Sweep. The songs are the business. The Rider is alive and well. Tracklisting: Jessica Boudreaux - Pulling Away Lindstrom - Sorry But It Isn't (Feat.
