In this episode of the USA Dog Behavior Podcast, certified dog behavior consultant and behaviorist Scott Sheaffer explores the question: Can dogs be psychotic? While dogs may exhibit behaviors that resemble human psychosis—such as staring at "nothing" or sudden aggression—these actions are typically linked to medical or environmental causes rather than clinical psychosis. Sheaffer breaks down potential triggers, including neurological issues, toxins, anxiety, or past trauma, and emphasizes the importance of ruling out underlying health problems with a veterinarian when needed. This episode highlights key warning signs that demand professional attention, such as unexplained aggression, disorientation, or compulsive behaviors. Sheaffer provides actionable steps for pet owners, urging them to consult a behaviorist or vet rather than dismissing odd behaviors as quirks. The takeaway? Early intervention is crucial for helping dogs lead calmer, happier lives. Can respecting a dog's boundaries be the key to preventing aggression? Many pet owners overlook the warning signs that dogs give when they are stressed or uncomfortable, leading to unnecessary confrontations. We share personal stories and practical advice on how to advocate for your dog's space and educate those around you about recognizing stress signals in dogs. This episode underscores the importance of boundary respect and offers strategies for managing encounters with uninformed individuals or overly enthusiastic dogs.Have you ever wondered why some dogs exhibit aggressive behavior when protecting their favorite person? Resource guarding is a complicated but common issue, rooted in a dog's fear of losing their most cherished resource: their human. Drawing from real-life examples, we discuss why dogs might act out and how to effectively mitigate these behaviors by understanding their perspective. By creating an environment where your dog feels secure and less threatened, you can reduce their anxiety and aggressive tendencies.Do you know the difference between behavioral and obedience training? It's a common misconception that aggression is solely an obedience issue. Through insightful anecdotes, we highlight the emotional root of aggressive behavior and the importance of counter conditioning and desensitization. We also delve into the fascinating world of military working dog training, comparing traditional methods with more humane, positive reinforcement techniques. From managing triggers to mastering canine body language, this episode equips you with the tools needed to foster a respectful and harmonious relationship with your furry friend.Support the Show.If you need professional help please visit my Dog Behaviorist website.Go here for Free Dog Training Articles

Dog anxiety often leads to behaviors that results in frustration for pet parents, leading to surrender or euthanasia. There are a plethora of approaches to address it, so how do you choose the best one for you and your dog?  Anxiety is an emotion, not a behavior.  It is essential to apply a method that acknowledges emotions, taking an approach whereby we do not suppress the emotion, but rather, provides skills to regulate, process, and replace "harmful" emotions with positive ones. In this episode, I introduce Emotional Replacement Therapy. I discuss canine enrichment, street dogs, adolescent dogs, and the guardian-canine bond to bring to light the benefits of human-based approaches, such as Flow, Cognitive Enrichment, and CBT meet the needs of pet parents and dogs.  ABSTRACT - "The aim of this paper is to highlight the connection between cognitive processes, affected states (primarily in relation to the guardian-canine bond), and behavior to explore the effects of these factors on the welfare of domestic dogs. I begin by presenting the proven benefits, as well as the limitations, of enrichment activities and training programs. I discuss the importance of stimulating cognitive functions and establishing the guardian-canine bond to prevent and address behaviors leading to surrender, euthanasia, and the implementation of aversive measures, and refer to studies to highlight the benefits of further research into factors affecting behavior. I then move beyond enrichment and the discussion of positive verses negative conditioning methods to introduce strategies borrowed from the human world to heighten cognitive stimulation, enhance bonding, and address behavioral issues as potential suggestions for future exploration to improve the welfare of domestic dogs." Fostering adolescent and adult dogs can be challenging. In this episode, I break down the goals and introduce the 7 step fostering program I have applied with hundreds of dogs and taught to dozens of fosters. Programs for pet parents are different than those of fostering - Why? Because the goal is different!  Fostering is not about BEING the best home or addressing behavioral issues that are specific to the foster home, but rather, taking the steps to ensure a successful adoption into the best home for the dog. I use the example of a recent foster couple I helped with their challenging dog. Their goal to address behavioral issues specific to their home life complicated the process of providing the dog with the necessary skills to be happily homed. The UPWARD Dogology 7 step program keeps the goals in the forefront and the success rate high. In this episode I chat with Sindhoor Pangal. Sindhoor is a canine behaviour consultant, a canine myotherapist and an engineer by qualification. She is a TEDx speaker and the author of the book, Dog Knows. Sindhoor quit her corporate life  to pursue a career in working with dogs, after her dog Nishi met with an accident and needed special physical and emotional care. She worked as a behaviour and myotherapy consultant for companion dogs, but soon discovered her passion for studying free living dogs in India. Her insights have been published in the IAABC journal and the PPG blog in the US, was presented at the PDTE summit in the UK and was mentioned in the book Canine Confidential by Dr. Marc Bekoff and a National Geographic Bookazine called the Genius of dogs. She is currently pursuing her masters in Anthrozoology from Exeter University (UK) and is also the principal and director of BHARCS. BHARCS offers a UK accredited level 4 diploma on canine behaviour and applied ethology. While she wears many hats, Sindhoor's favourite role has been being a mommy to two amazing dogs - Nishi (who recently passed away) and Cheeru, who she considers her inspiration and her greatest teachers. We chat about what her studies  of street dogs  in India has taught her about canine behavior and how what she has learned can help us to be better pet parents to our own pups. She also touches on the concept and importance of decolonization when it comes to our companion animals.Helpful Links:Donate To Care:CARE Shelter for donations : https://charlies-care.com/.  Coupon code : BAROO2023Link to course : https://courses.bharcs.com/Get the first chapter of  Dog Knows free here : https://www.bharcs.com/dog-knows-book-chapter-1Support the show If you are enjoying The Baroo Podcast you can now support the show by buying me a coffee. In this episode, Jerry Bradshaw and Derek Beckelman discuss: Building a relationship of trust with your new dog, both pet and working.  Being consistent with the rules with your dog.  The emotional nature of dogs and handlers.  The clash between attention and anticipation.  Increasing the effectiveness of your communication with your dog.    Key Takeaways: Using food, treats, or toys to motivate, especially in the early stages of building the relationship is not a bad thing. But you want to avoid becoming a treat dispensing robot.  There are two sides to training - classical and operant. You do not want to focus only on operant conditioning and forget about the aspects of classical conditioning that can help with your training.  Dogs will try to anticipate everything. We, as humans, fall into routines. These can clash and create conflict within the training.  Training can be frustrating. But the dog just wants to do dog things. You can't get mad at them for being a dog.  You have to pay attention to where your dog's head is at in any given moment. Sometimes they aren't listening, not because they don't want to, but because they cannot due to other circumstances.    "It's not up to me how quickly a dog makes progress. It's up to the dog. But as long as we're paying attention, and we're reading what the dog is trying to tell us is going on, we can make jumps and progress when they're ready. But you have to see it. You have to feel it, and that just takes experience." — Derek Beckelman   Get Jerry's book Controlled Aggression on Amazon.com   Episode References:  Dog Language: An Encyclopedia of Canine Behavior by Roger Abrantes - https://www.amazon.com/Dog-Language-Encyclopedia-Canine-Behavior/dp/0966048407  Excel-erated Learning by Pamela Reid - https://www.amazon.com/Excel-erated-Learning-Explaining-plain-English/dp/1888047070  How Dogs Learn by Mary Burch - https://www.amazon.com/How-Dogs-Learn-Mary-Burch/dp/1630260398  Info Every Dog Trainer Should Know by Will Garrido - https://www.amazon.com/Info-Every-Trainer-Should-Know/dp/1653816155  The Decoy Book by Will Garrido - https://www.amazon.com/Decoy-Book-Collaborations-Some-Industry/dp/B08T6YGWSD/  On Talking Terms with Dogs by Turid Rugaas - https://www.amazon.com/Talking-Terms-Dogs-Calming-Signals/dp/1929242360/  Mia Skogster - https://inspireurdog.fi/trainings      Contact Derek:  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/derekbeckelman/     Contact Jerry: Website: controlledaggressionpodcast.com Email: JBradshaw@TarheelCanine.com Tarheel Canine Training:  www.tarheelcanine.com Youtube:  tarheelcanine Twitter: @tarheelcanine Instagram: @tarheelk9 Facebook: TarheelCanineTraining Protection Sports Website: psak9-as.org Patreon:   patreon.com/controlledaggression Slideshare: Tarheel Canine Calendly: https://calendly.com/tarheelcanine  Tarheel Canine Seminars: https://streetreadyk9.com/      Sponsors:  ALM K9 Equipment: almk9equipment.com PSA & American Schutzhund: psak9-as.org Tarheel Canine: tarheelcanine.com Superior Canine Website: https://superiorcanine.ca/  Aaron's Superior Canine Email: aaron@superiorcanine.ca  Superior Canine Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/superiorcanineinc  Superior Canine Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/superiorcanineinc/    Train Hard, train smart, be safe.     Show notes by Podcastologist Chelsea Taylor-Sturkie   Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. If you got a puppy during the COVID lockdown like I did, you've probably seen some weird and frustrating social behaviors and anxieties crop up as a result of missing out on crucial socialization time. Between the nightmarish vet appointments and the anxiety-fueled barking, my dog is driving me bonkers and I've been at a loss for what to do about it.   Luckily, canine behavior consultant Rene Smith is here to help us take a closer look at the purpose behind our dog's behaviors and reevaluate our approach to intervention. Being ADHD herself, Rene understands that strict training schedules will never work for her mostly ADHD clients, nor do they need to. Instead, she focuses on building trust and connection between dogs and their humans by giving dogs agency over their space and providing humans with the tools and know-how to interpret communication attempts and reinforce healthy behaviors.    Rene's passion for helping a population that's often misunderstood is inspiring (not to mention, so ADHD!), and I'm delighted to have you join our wonderful eye-opening conversation.  Resources: Instagram: @streetdogrehab Website: Street Dog Rehab Facebook group: Human End of the Leash Podcast: Dog Life with No Spoons Organization/Cleaning coaching: https://www.freshstartdetailers.com/virtual-organizing-coaching Website to book sessions and learn more: www.streetdogrehab.com Discount code for listeners: NOSPOONS

Leash walks can be frustrating when dogs are pulling, putting on the brakes, or  lolly-gagging.  Should you be expected to continuously turn around, or simply allow your dog to sniff everything? Should you be expected to have decompression walks that are really only decompressing for your dog? In this ep I talk about common recommendations, from continuously turning around, standing still, to allowing your dog to sniff and decide the direction (is this a technique?).  I talk about different apparatuses designed to prevent pulling, and discuss some pros and cons of some popular ones. I make some suggestions of easy exercises to apply to gain greater focus (no, not treats or the look at me command), and provide suggestions as to how to apply these to your situation and daily life.  Leash walking is all about having the skills to communicate and provide calm, clear direction. Your dog's perception of you and the environment determines his or her behavior.NOTE - this is not a training guide. The advice is to be adjusted to your needs and specific situation, and dog.
