Jennifer Koonings shares what she observed attending a Ben Gvir protest where a woman was physically attacked and bloodied by Ben Gvir supporters. But first historian Greg Grandin talks about the Pope, immigration, imperialism and his excellent new book America "America, América: A New History of the New World" Greg Grandin is Professor of History at Yale University. He is the author of a number of prize-winning books, including most recently The End of the Myth: From the Frontier to the Border Wall in the Mind of America, and The Empire of Necessity: Slavery, Freedom, and Deception in the New World, which won the Bancroft and Beveridge prizes in American History and was shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize in the UK. Yaakov Shapiro is an international speaker, author, and pulpit rabbi for over 30 years, now emeritus. He has attained an enviable place in the arena of anti-Zionist public intellectuals, having constructed a unique oeuvre on the ideology of Zionism and its relationship to Judaism. After graduating high school at age 16, Rabbi Shapiro dedicated himself to full-time study of religion, becoming the protégé of some of the most well-regarded rabbinic scholars in Orthodoxy. Among his areas of research are religious philosophy, analytic theology, Talmud, Halachah, and Biblical exegesis. At age 19 he published his first book, משפטי הבירורים, a collection of original expositions on rabbinic principles of tort adjudication. His most recent work, The Empty Wagon: Zionism's Journey from Identity Crisis to Identity Theft (2018), a 1381-page treatise on the differences between Judaism and Zionism, is the most comprehensive work written on the subject and considered by many to be definitive. Jennifer Koonings is a psychiatric nurse practitioner, New York State certified sexual assault forensic examiner (SAFE) and former ER nurse. She completed graduate studies in global public health. She was fired from her long held held SAFE role for her anti-genocide advocacy after the NY district attorney's office accused her of being a rape apologist as well as the reason why a sexual assault victim she provided care to and testified in court for did not receive justice. She currently works providing mental health services to underserved women in the NYC shelter system. She also runs a social media account focusing on social justice issues. ***Please support The Katie Halper Show *** For bonus content, exclusive interviews, to support independent media & to help make this program possible, please join us on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/thekatiehalpershow Get your Katie Halper Show Merch here! https://katiehalper.myspreadshop.com/all Follow Katie on Twitter: https://x.com/kthalps Follow Katie on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/kthalps/

It seems like far too often we're reading a new headline about another violent crime — another murder. And it's hard to keep up. But every now and again, a crime seizes your attention and makes you ask if we're heading in the right direction when it comes to addressing violent crime in New Zealand. And that case, for me, is the murder — or should I say the alleged murder — of American entomology student Kyle Whorrall. And often, I think, when we hear about violent crimes, we try to comfort ourselves with the assumption that they're confined to the criminal underworld — gang-on-gang, drug deals gone wrong, or some other context that feels far removed. And if we can keep our distance from that world, we're somehow safe. An illusion of security that, perhaps, helps us sleep at night. But now with the news that a 16-year-old has been charged with the aggravated robbery and murder of Kyle Whorrall, I've found myself increasingly of the view that our justice system simply isn't delivering sentences that act as any sort of deterrent to violence. Of course, there needs to be a process and we can't get ahead of ourselves when it comes to assuming guilt. But if someone is found accountable — what real chance do you really think there is of a sentence being handed down that is any sort of deterrence in a society that is becoming more brazen and more violent. Because what happens is that the focus shifts to the accused and to all the terrible reasons they've ended up where they are. And then the discounts start rolling in — for age, for remorse, for a troubled upbringing, maybe even a guilty plea, or their so-called prospects for rehabilitation. And before you know it, the sentence is chipped away — discount after discount — and a young offender is out on home detention after barely a couple of years inside. Meanwhile, for the victim, there's no second chance. He's dead. There's no chance to make a submission to the court, to try and mitigate the outcome of the terrible assault. Because he's dead. He can't make a plea that his life was only just getting underway. Because he's dead. And I'm sorry — that sounds jarring, doesn't it? But maybe it should. Because we like to dress tragedies like this up in euphemisms to soften the blow. But there's no cushioning this tragedy - because, well, Kyle Whorrall is dead — and he shouldn't be. And I'm sorry, but when it comes to our justice system, in my view it's doing bugger all to send any message that violent crime will not be tolerated. Ask any police officer who's spent time dealing with this stuff — they'll tell you how callous the criminal community has become, and how little value is placed on other people's lives and safety. So yes — I'm all for harder sentences. Sentences with consequences that send an unequivocal message around violent crime. Because the murder victim gets no say in how things play out. No plea. No mitigation. No second shot at life. And when it comes to the perpetrator of this crime — I'm not interested in their tears. I'm not interested in their regrets. I'm not interested in their tragic past or the excuses that will be rolled out. They deserve no more benefit of the doubt than their victim received when his life was cut so brutally, and so tragically, short.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Environmental Justice - an effort to affirmatively address disproportionate pollution and environmental burdens borne by low-income and minority communities - grew from an Executive Order by President Clinton in 1994 through expanded efforts across the entire federal government with special emphasis at DOJ and the EPA in the Biden Administration. President Trump issued an Executive Order on his second day in office prohibiting "... all discriminatory and illegal preferences...," followed by a Memorandum by Attorney General Pam Bondi rescinding the Environmental Justice policies of prior administrations. What are the implications of this Administration’s cancelling of environmental justice writ large? What does this mean for environmental enforcement and infrastructure development in low-income and minority communities? Do its concepts still live on in the federal government and at state and local levels? I don't mind telling you, I've kind of been dreading making any sort of editorial comment or opinion on Waitangi Day. Not because I don't think it's significant, but because I feel an expectation to say something about its importance in our calendar, how it's an opportunity to reflect on our history, and how we should use it to think about the way ahead. Or something like that. I'm not about to deny that it's an important day - especially for iwi and the Crown within the context of Treaty settlements and Crown-iwi relations. But if I am honest - I'm kind of over it. And I'd hazard a guess that for many people, the first think on their minds isn't politics or history - it's: What's the weather doing for our day off? So, I'm not about to offer a lecture on what Waitangi means or should mean. There's no shortage of that if that's what you are seeking. I guess I've just seen enough news coverage that either lectures us on what we should be thinking or pushes the most inflammatory images or stories they can get their hands on. Of course, it's understandable that the feisty stuff will be what makes the news, but should we really be surprised that so many people are tuning out? I think that many of us have just grown weary with the predictable news cycle around Waitangi. It's our own version of Groundhog Day - where we have the same pattern of event, the same dramas, the same tensions. Then, when the day itself rolls around, we're told what a wonderful occasion it is and how you really have to visit Waitangi to appreciate it as our national day. Essentially, I don't think events in the lead up to Waitangi represent us very well. They don't reflect how we relate to each other as New Zealanders. And they certainly don't make us feel united as a country - or even particularly good about ourselves. Which is a shame, because the endless politicising of race in New Zealand betrays how well New Zealanders get on with each other. We've been meeting, marrying, forming friendships, and building families together for generations. New Zealand today is a truly multicultural society. In a few weeks' time, the netball season will be underway, and as I've said before on my show, if you want to see the New Zealand I relate to - you'll find it there. Every night of competition, hundreds of kids and adults gather to play, compete, and have fun. The faces you'll see are from a multitude of races, backgrounds, and cultures - all just getting stuck in and enjoying themselves. That is the face of New Zealand today, and not one that is represented by what we often see unfolding in the lead up to Waitangi Day, when once again, we're defined and divided by race - Pākehā vs Māori. And frankly? I'm bored with it. Now, there will be people who say: Oh, but you really have to go to Waitangi to appreciate what a wonderful occasion it is! That may well be true. But if the meaning of our national day can only be fully grasped by physically being in one place, then it's hardly the unifying celebration it's supposed to be. That's a tough sell to five million people. So, when it comes to the 6th of February, I'm probably with most people - I'll just be looking out the window, hoping for sunshine, and asking: How's the weather looking? The tide turned against the Axis and in favour of the Allies in the course of 1943. Victories at Stalingrad in Russia, in the Battle of the Atlantic, and in North Africa, came on top of American advances in the Pacific, from island to island towards Japan. That relieved some of the pressure on the British government, that had been coming under fire for the all the disasters of 1942: the shipping losses in the Battle of the Atlantic, the loss of Burma and Malaya culminating in the fall of Singapore, and the Eighth Army's retreat in front of Rommel in North Africa. Within the British government, things had changed since the start of the war, with the Conservatives Chamberlain and Halifax gone, as well as the poorly performing Labour Deputy Leader, Arthur Greenwood. Churchill and Attlee, so different in personality, had found an effective working relationship, with Attlee now officially Churchill's deputy, and deeply loyal to him. Attlee supported his boss on the big questions, such as the strategic bombing campaign against Germany, now considerably stepped up with the arrival of the Americans. That campaign was increasingly targeting civilians, making it arguably a war crime, or even simply terrorism, but it continued even though it never achieved its aim of breaking German morale. What it did do is divert a significant amount of German airpower from the Russian front to German home defence. The North African campaign had a similar effect: small scale though it was, it sucked in German troops who might otherwise have fought in Russia, and it cost the Luftwaffe dearly, helping the Soviets gain air superiority on the Eastern Front, as the Brits and the Americans won it in the West. Where Attlee differed from Churchill was over questions such as India. A terrible new famine in Bengal, handled with callousness by Churchill, ensured that the question of Indian independence remained a burning one. Attlee was also under pressure from his own party, with Labour demanding that the government adopt as immediate policy the Beveridge report, proposing major reforms to ensure the poor and workers emerged better off when Britain reconstructed itself after the war. Attlee resisted the pressure, since he felt that it was important to hold the Churchill government together, making only small changes until it had won the war, and saving the major reforms for peacetime. There's belief a new agency focused on driving up foreign investment is well overdue. The Government is creating Invest New Zealand to attract overseas investors into infrastructure and other key sectors. It aims to streamline overseas investment by providing tailored support. Queen City Law Managing Director Marcus Beveridge told Ryan Bridge it was what New Zealand Trade and Enterprise was always meant to do. He says if they do adopt an all of government approach, it could put the country back up to where it should be in terms of OECD rankings. Among the topics we discussed: What has stood out to us and our groups as we've read Calvin together The most under-appreciated aspects of Calvin's theology Why Calvin is known primarily for the doctrine of predestination even though it hasn't shown up yet in the reading Favorite passages thus far How Calvin's ideas show up concretely in Reformed churches and institutions Encouragement for those who are finding the reading difficult to keep going Additional resources: Our original podcast discussion before starting the Institutes Our reading schedule: https://shorturl.at/Yow8x Calvin's Institutes (2 volume Battles edition) Calvin's Institutes (1 volume Beveridge edition) Calvin's Institutes online edition (CCEL/Beveridge)

David Givens is the Director of Archaeology at Jamestown Rediscovery [Historic Jamestowne] on the James River in the Tidewater region of Virginia. After a nightmarish reading of the trials of the early Jamestown colonists, we start at the beginning of an archaeological quest to find the lost 1607 fort; the first permanent English settlement in America, where the worlds of the English Empire & Powhatan Confederacy clashed, and the legends of John Smith & Pocahontas were born. After describing the rediscovery project, we head over land and water to Chief Powhatan's village, Werowocomoco, to hear of the indigenous preservation efforts underway. Then it's on to artifacts dug up over the decades: English pipes inspired by Native American design; foodways like iguanas and corn cobs found in middens & wells; glassworks; distilling & herbalism. For his story, David tells of his involvement in the disturbing discovery of colonial cannibalism dating back to a harrowing period called The Starving Time [1609-1610]. We end this epic episode on the first English-American wagon road and musings about reincarnation, the wheel of fortune, and Terrence Malick's film "The New World."Plan your trip to Historic JamestowneReading from The Jamestown Adventure: Accounts of the Virginia Colony, 1605-1614 edited by Ed SouthernMusic:"Daphne"Performed by The Telemann Society, Richard Schulze "Mr. Beveridge's Maggot"Performed by The Telemann Society, Richard Schulze Support Our Numinous Nature on Patreon.Follow Our Numinous Nature & my naturalist illustrations on InstagramCheck out my shop of shirts, prints, and books featuring my artContact: herbaceoushuman@gmail.com

We're still feeling that party energy of the holidays as Jim welcomes Taylor Berry, the VP of Brand Marketing at Tito's Handmade Vodka, to The CMO Podcast. Austin-based Tito's may be handmade, but it is no small brand. Tito's is the number 1 best-selling vodka brand in the US, with revenue in the $2 billion range. Its story is a classic American Dream saga. Bert “Tito” Beveridge–yes Beveridge is his real last name–founded the brand in 1995 after failed ventures in the oil and drilling industry, and in mortgage lending. Taylor has worked at Tito's about 5 and a half years, with four years as the head of brand marketing. An LA native and graduate of USC, Taylor now makes Austin his home. Interestingly, Tito's is Taylor's first time on the client side; he spent the first several years of his career on the agency side, working with the creative powerhouses TBWA/Media Arts, Droga 5, and SS+K. So, pour yourself a Tito's cocktail, and listen up as Taylor takes us behind the scenes of one of the great brand stories of our times. Plus, he announces the “With Tito's” brand platform and the Tito's Spokescart.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
