At present, challenging behaviour in school is off the scale and largely this is due to unmet needs. You can't ‘punish or reward the neurodivergent' out of children, so the traditional methods of classroom management and behaviour control won't work. Joining Dale today is Catrina Lowri, who shares her personal journey with behaviour management spanning over 25 years. Catrina provides a glimpse into her early experiences in the classroom, reflecting on the techniques she initially believed to be the "best" and how her perspective evolved throughout her career. From facing challenging situations like being mooned at to earning the nickname "Tough McGuff," Catrina has encountered a wide range of behavioural challenges. One of the eye-opening insights shared by Catrina is that the majority of challenging behaviour is triggered by the adults in the room. Through her experiences and ideas, she emphasises the transformative impact of unconditional positive regard and the profound difference that arises from making time for curiosity and reflection. By listening to her stories and perspectives, we gain valuable insights into the power of empathy, understanding, and self-reflection when addressing challenging behaviour. Differentiation is currently facing negativity due to confusion surrounding its definition and expectations. Teachers are often filled with dread when they hear the terms ‘scaffolding up', ‘adaptive teaching' or ‘differentiation' are introduced and assume it's going to mean more work for them. It isn't implicitly clear to teachers how to go about differentiation and who it applies to in their classroom. Catrina Lowri joins Dale today to tell us how differentiation will make life easier for teachers and that good differentiation should be for everyone - ‘Turning differentiation on its head'. Listen to hear simple principles that can be implemented in daily lessons without much extra effort. Teachers want inclusion but are time and resource poor, Catrina shows ways to get better results within the limits of a mainstream classroom. ‘Pride & Progress Bites' is a P&P mini-series. We've been releasing the Pride & Progress podcast for 3 years now, and the podcast is built on the belief that sharing a story can start a change. Stories are incredibly powerful - even a short story has the power to start a meaningful change. In each ‘Pride & Progress Bite', we hear from an LGBT+ educator or ally, each sharing a short story of pride & progress from their own school or community. This Pride & Progress Bite comes from the wonderful Catrina Lowri (she/her), as she discusses being bisexual, a neurodivergent, and the power of losing the mask. ‘Pride & Progress Bites' will be released weekly. If you have a bite-size story of pride & progress that you'd like to share in your own episode - get in touch - we'd love to hear from you. Share a story – start a change. www.prideprogress.co.uk
Lowri Dowthwaite-Walsh is a perfect podcast guest, and you'll very quickly figure out why! Lowri trained as an actor as one of only 4 girls in her year group at The Bristol Old Vic theatre school. The huge irony of Lowri's story begins with the fact that she landed a dream job as a character in a soap opera for 2 years. Her character was studying psychology and philosophy and Lowri became so engrossed in her research that she fell head over heels in love with psychology - so much so, that she quit the acting business in 2005 and went back to university to study Psychology. Not content with that, she followed her degree with a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology and worked in the NHS for 7 years as Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner. A real-life full circle moment!Lowri has also been a lecturer in Counselling, Phycology and Wellbeing and is an expert in her field researching the topics around wellbeing and the science of happiness having published many papers. Lowri is now concentrating on building her own private practice. Lowri generously opens up about her experiences as a professional actor – the ups and downs. She also talks about her fascination with what it means to be human and the challenges of going back into academia after living quite the creative life. Lowri shares her thoughts and experiences from her years as a practitioner around treating depression, anxiety and trauma and how happiness, as she so wonderfully puts it, Lowri says: “Instead of being obsessed with happiness we can be content with happier”!I think recognising that happiness is a practice that we need to build on is absolutely key. It is there for us all, but it isn't necessarily as easy as just ‘let's all be happy'. It's a very interesting and uplifting conversation with someone who has made a significant and positive impact on my life!Thank you Lowri, you Welsh goddess!! Hosted on Acast. Keeping your teeth and gums clean can help your heart and your brain, reducing the risk of diseases from diabetes to dementia. To find out why, Michael Mosley speaks to Dr. Sim Singhrao from the University of Central Lancashire School of Dentistry. She reveals bacteria in your mouth can travel from your gums into your blood causing problems in other organs, including your brain. Meanwhile, our volunteer Lowri has a go at brushing and using interdental brushes every day to see if it's something she'd like to fit into her lifestyle.

Elite girls' soccer in Wales has just come to the end of a transformative season – the first in which the Football Association of Wales (FAW) Trust Girls' Academy u14s and u16s squads competed against boys. When this plan was announced in April 2021, Lowri Roberts - head of women's and girls' football at the FAW, and the spearhead behind this new approach - said: “Our aim is simple; to provide more best-v-best opportunities in training and games for our most talented girls.”She was just as committed to that goal last month, when I caught up with her and colleague Kat Lovett, the girls' age-group manager at the FAW Trust, who is leading the programme in south Wales. Both refer several times to “developing the next Jess Fishlock”, the first Wales player to earn 100 caps for the national team. And it is this high-end achievement the two organisations have set their sights on.

Adventurers and endurance athletes Mimi Anderson and Lowri Morgan come together in conversation. It's a special chat between two females who specialise in endurance challenges, often in extreme environments. They've both excelled at ultra running, but in 2022 they are coming together to take on the Pan-Celtic race, a self-supported bike race around the Celtic heartlands. This is full of wonderful lessons, stories, inspiration and laughter too. You'll hear: 05:00 Start of the interview with Mimi and Lowri, including how they met. "I followed Lowri when she did the 6633 because I thought she is going to take my record away from me! And I thought one day we have to do an adventure together," says Mimi. "No way was I going to take your record Mimi," Lowri says! 07:25 More about the 6633 Artic Ultra which is a 352.64 miles self-sufficient race. They talk about not having communication with the outside world, why 50miles is like a sprint finish and how they keep going when everyone else has dropped out. "You don't think about it," Mimi says. I had fallen asleep standing up at one point, but I was 18 hours ahead of the next person and my brain wasn't functioning and you can't fathom distance." I know I might not be the fastest, but I want to be the best prepared athlete," Lowri says. 17:00 Mimi talks about some of the mental games that go through her head when she is competing. 20:00 Mimi on failure 'I've had some epic failures in my life.' And we talk about having to stop doing something because of injury and the importance of being able to diversify and change direction. 30:00 Mimi and Lowri on the https://www.pancelticrace.com/ (Pan-Celtic race). "It's a journey. It's the furthest the two of us have done. The aim is to do it in 9 days, so that we make the after-party. The day of the party is my 60th birthday," says Mimi. Lowri adds "I'm so glad I'm with Mimi because she knows the mental toughness you need to get through these races." 36:45 "I love kit, I should have been a man!" Mimi says. This is getting me really excited, Mimi!" We will smell like mad when we finish as we will probably just take two kits. You can't carry loads because it just makes the bike too heavy. 39:30 The huge 'down' after a big challenge or adventure. "When I get back from races, my family give me two minutes to talk." 40:45 Mimi talks about how she only started to run in her mid-late 30s. "When I started running, it was purely to have thinner legs. And back then, you didn't see people running the streets or with backpacks. It just wasn't done. The revelation came when I realised people ran outside, not just on treadmills." "I hope I have shown my children and grandchildren that you can do these things. I want to encourage other women to go and do these adventures." "It's taking that plunge and if something happens, you deal with it at the time." 46:40 We talk CONFIDENCE! And body confidence and how Mimi overcame anorexia. "Life was horrible really." "But as an athlete, I look at my body now and we have extraordinary bodies. My legs have enabled me to run in places around the world that I could never have imagined. I think we forget how incredible and beautiful our bodies are, that enable us to do epic things. I still have days I don't like my body, but on the whole I love it." Lowri: It does give you that inner strength. The lessons I have learnt on the trails have helped me in life. On the trails, you reach a point where your mind is telling you to give up, that you've reached a wall. You think you're going to collapse, but then your limits don't break and you realise then that you find the 4th, 5th, 6th gear and the smile returns. In life in general you get doors than close in your face, but then you find a way around it. In life in general, when things don't go the way I want them to, I think back to the trails." 51:00 We talk about preparing the mind for big challenges. So. Many. Golden. Nuggets!
