Back in the school days of today's parents and grandparents, one's thirst was quenched by a visit to one of a school's many wall-mounted water fountains, and you sometimes had to wait in line! While bottled water has been around in some form since the sixteen-hundreds, it wasn't until 1994 that Pepsi began test-marketing it's filtered water brand, Aquafina. Now, single use plastic bottles are everywhere, and many schools have shut down the communal drinking fountain. Now, kids see their water-drinking habits as an opportunity to make an identity statement through personalized fifty dollar water bottles. Last year it was Stanley that reigned. Now, Stanley is so yesterday, with the Owala, Hydro Flask, and Lululemon bottles bringing the status. Parents, the water-bottle craze offers you a great opportunity for spiritual nurture, as you help your kids understand the push and pull of peer pressure, the influential power of marketing, and the need to find identity in Christ, and not a water bottle!
What can M&Ms, McDonalds, Harry Potter, Aquafina, Taylor Swift, Jeopardy, and Bed Bath & Beyond teach us about landing a dream job or securing a promotion? Plenty. Imagine you're at a job interview. You've rehearsed your answers, polished your resume, and you're feeling confident. But what if the key to landing that job isn't just about your skills and experience? What if it's about how you make people feel? How you make people feel is your brand, Zane says. That's what Leslie Zane, a Harvard Business School alum and prominent branding expert, talks about in this interview. She says that whether you're trying to get a new job, a promotion, or more customers for your small business, it all comes down to how you build your personal brand. Zane breaks it down into three main ideas: be salient, be relevant, and be distinctive. Being salient means making sure people remember you. It's not just about doing your job well, but about connecting with people all over your company. Zane gives an example of a dental hygienist who calls patients after their appointments to check on them and offer advice. This extra touch helps the hygienist stick in people's minds. Being relevant is about focusing on the good stuff. Zane says if you make a mistake at work, don't dwell on it. Instead, do more good things to push out the bad memory. She talks about how McDonald's dealt with rumors about "pink slime" in their food. Instead of denying it over and over, they started showing how they make their food with fresh ingredients. This helped people forget about the pink slime and think about good things instead. Being distinctive means standing out, but in a way that still feels familiar. Zane tells a story about the game show Jeopardy. When the longtime host Alex Trebek died, the producers tried inviting different celebrities to host the show. But viewers didn't like it. The ratings only rose when they chose Ken Jennings, a former champion contestant, as the new host. He was familiar enough that viewers felt comfortable with him. Zane also talks about how these ideas can help small businesses. She says it's important to reach out to new customers, not just focus on the ones you already have. She suggests finding ways to connect your business to things that people already enjoy. If you run an accounting firm in Kansas City, for example, you might talk about local sports teams or famous barbecue to help people feel a connection to your business. Throughout the interview, Zane emphasizes that building a strong personal brand isn't about bragging or being fake. It's about creating genuine connections with people and consistently showing your best qualities. You're creating buzz about yourself. The more positive connections you make, the stronger your brand becomes. Zane's advice goes against some common ideas about marketing and self-promotion. She says you don't need to stick to just one thing or only target a specific group of people. Instead, she encourages reaching out to as many people as possible and finding ways to connect your skills or business to things they already care about. Most recently Tangelene had the opportunity to score Season 3 of Comedy Central's Awkwafina is Nora from Queens, created by Awkwafina and Teresa Hsiao. On episode 29 of The Carousel podcast, I'm joined by based firebrand Peachy Keenan. We talk about her conversion from Sex in the City atheist to based mother of five. SHOW NOTESPeachy Keenan. Tweeter of bangers, writer for American Mind, and author of new book Domestic Extremist: A Practical Guide to Winning the Culture War. A machine gun of deft insights and genuinely funny one-liners, Peachy is a must-follow in our scene for spicy takes on the news. But that's not all, she also provides genuine policy analysis grounded in political philosophy and, of course, laced with her trademark razor wit.Pod appearances?Your best tweet of all time, at least in terms of engagement, I believe you've said was something very banal. Remind me what it was and how you conceived it, and the sort of attention it got you?Which types of tweets are your true favs? Fav accounts? The Peachy Keenan brand—why Peachy Keenan? What's your pfp? Why burning tires?Twitter growthYou've said women need to be anti-feminists. What does that mean exactly?Forest Passage quote: In times of still greater danger the salvific power must be sought deeper, in the mothers. This contact liberates primal forces, to which the mere powers of time cannot stand up. Why did you choose to begin your book with this?Domestic Terrorists—when did US govt say that and about what exactly?Branding the book cover.Who is publishing it?What is its ultimate advice? The overwhelming question I want to ask when reading your stuff is at what moment did this RW consciousness begin in you? How did it form and develop? Were you an outcast? Or always sort of having an inner and outer perspective?“For better or worse, I was raised as a fairly spoiled, totally secular, suburban American princess, and outwardly, I haven't changed that much.”Do you actually think you could live in a deep red place? How did you form the narrative of the book? How is it divided?Your writing is smart and punchy, clever and full of perfect stats and insights said in the perfect way. Was this a skill you honed? Or does this stuff just come out naturally. Did being a copywriter help (not sure if you want to mention this).Ex: “My name is Peachy Keenan, and I am a domestic extremist. Unless you feel violently threatened by monogamous breeding pairs or large families, my use of the term “domestic extremist” has exactly zero to do with violence. You can call off the no-knock raid. Tell the guys at the CIA black site they won't have to prep my gulag cell. My waterboarding will have to wait. A note to my CIA readers: if you must waterboard me, I prefer Fiji. Do not attempt to waterboard me with tap water, or—shudder—Aquafina.”How do we keep it from seeming like we're just complaining all the time? What I mean is, how do we differentiate between reaction against versus an idea that's springing from the natural way things should be? This “satanic elites” stuff can start to get exhausting after awhile, even if it's entirely true.Ex: “Guess what? You already know what to do! To become a domestic extremist, all one must do is listen closely for the ancestral longings that lurk in the heart of every human being. As you listen, dormant instincts may rouse themselves from slumber. Pay attention to them—they will lead you out of the barren wasteland that stretches before us!”You've talked about our current society having lost the purpose of being a woman. What do you mean by that? What is the role of a female creator in our world?“Masculine republics give way to feminine democracies, and feminine democracies give way to tyranny.” AristotleYou as a creator: what's your process? What role does your husband play, eg editor, cheerleader, etc?Do you get annoyed by people asking you to talk about mother stuff all the time, or is that exactly the point ? You reached this interesting point with Kaschuta where you were both sort of saying you didn't have a choice to have not gotten married in your twenties, that doing that would seem like a dream. Why do you say that? Final question from my wife: how do you not hire help?Peachy on Twitter Peachy's book Domestic ExtremistPeachy in American Mind Get full access to The Carousel at thecarousel.substack.com/subscribe

ADDICTION. Today, Timothy J. Hillegonds is a successful writer and advertising agency executive. But as a rebellious teenager longing for a connection with his absentee father, Tim's life became a series of increasingly destructive and volatile behavior: kicked out of high school, arrested multiple times in multiple states, fathering a child at age 19 while part of a toxic relationship, and ultimately, addicted to alcohol, cocaine and crystal meth. Find out how Tim began to understand the sources of his anger, what led to his recovery, and how he reoriented his life. Without a doubt, you will be inspired by Tim's message that no matter how bad things get, “it can be okay.” Tim is the founder and chief strategist at Thrive Creative, a Chicago-based advertising agency. His memoir, “The Distance Between”, was a finalist for the 2020 Chicago Writers Association Book of the Year Award and can be found wherever books are sold. Tim's writing has appeared in Salon.com, The Los Angeles Review of Books, The Rumpus, and elsewhere on the web and in print. You mean bottled water isn't all the same? I'm not talking about taste. I'm talking pH levels and ingredients. As necessary as water is, I've learned that not every water source is equal and neither are their components. In fact, many bottled water sources are highly acidic, which challenges your body's instinct to stay pH balanced, and doesn't support our weight loss or wellness goals. In this episode, I conduct a home science experiment to find out the pH of popular bottled water brands, including Aquafina, Dasani, SmartWater and Fiji, to learn what sources are best to grab on the go. I also rate these sources on taste to share which popular water brand I'll be purchasing on my trip this weekend to Omaha, NE. (Yes, I said Nebraska!) In direct opposition to the earlier episode covering forgotten wonders, this week It Happened One Year heralds the heavy hitters, the master blasters, the success juggernauts that emerged in 1994! Sarah & Joe have much debate over the title of this episode, before launching into an extended, uncomfortable look at Sex.com and the adult website industry, before pivoting to safer tech spaces like Amazon and Yahoo and Webcrawler. Bottled water giant Aquafina emerged that year, while the Wonderbra made its American debut, and the Sony Playstation made waves overseas. The engineering marvel The Chunnel opened (and the hosts reveal their complete ignorance as to how this structure functions), as did Chicago's United Center, which gets them off on a whole different series of tangents. Many, many cameos and segways along the way (including the original patent for The Segway, incidentally), featuring the various video game systems of the '90s, longtime urban myths about Mountain Dew, the differences between whitehouse.gov and whitehouse.com, how great Joe's dad was as a build-your-own video game character, Sarah's adventures with water and wine bras, speculation about who Brian Pinkerton is, Viktor Stalberg's only career hat trick, and that one time Pete Townshend sang "My Generation" at a Who concert. It's wall-to-wall topics and information in this chock-a-block thirty-second episode!
