Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. – Charles R. SwindollAre you generally more fearful or fearless? We all have our good days and bad days. It's got to be partly innate, a trait present from birth. Some people were born fearless. Others have to work hard to build their courage. When it comes to rejection, fearing it is more universal. Really, who loves rejection!? Get rejected consecutive times and even the most fearless warrior can feel the slump and have to shake off the funk. Why face rejection at all? Often, it's easier not to try. DISCOMFORTWe know it's easier to limit yourself to doing what's comfortable. Staying in your lane feels good. Think back to a real breakthrough or high achievement in your life. I'll bet it required truly pushing yourself beyond what you thought was possible. Growth most often takes place outside of your comfort zone. Welcoming discomfort is easier said than done. We need to develop a habit to get there. TRAINLast week, I spoke at the https://podcastgym.com/link/interviewmastery/ (Interview Mastery Summit) where my session was, “Getting to Yes: Book Bigger Guests, Get Booked On Bigger Shows.” In it, I touched on the mindset for booking bigger guests and getting booked on bigger shows. Here's a challenge for you. Commit to getting rejected 100 times this year. That's 25 “no's” per quarter. It's harder to do than you think. When you pitch, a nonresponse does not count. You must get a “no” reply. Celebrating rejection will shift your mindset. Each time will still be disappointing, but you'll quickly celebrate and move on. Ultimately, this gamification will encourage you to pitch more often and reach higher. Don't just take my word for it. For background, this idea was inspired by Jia Jiang who sought out rejection for 100 days. He's an expert! If you haven't watched his TEDTalk, it's 15 minutes well spent. Out of his video blog came the book, https://amzn.to/3se5qMa?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=pg_45_rejection_proof&utm_term=2022-02-23 (“Rejection Proof: How I Beat Fear and Became Invincible Through 100 Days of Rejection.”) Here are three highlights from Jia. IN THE PROCESS OF MY REJECTION JOURNEY, HERE IS WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT REJECTION:Rejection is a muscle. If you don't constantly work outside your comfort zone, you'll lose it and you'll become weak and timid. Rejection is a numbers game. Fight through enough no's and you will eventually find a yes. Avoiding rejection is worse than receiving it. Most people believe avoiding rejection is a good thing, by avoiding something bad we've dodged a bullet and we are somehow net positive, but that's not true. When we shy away from rejection we reject ourselves and our ideas before the world ever has a chance to reject them. This is the worst form of rejection and as a result, we are ignored by the world. Let this be your new goal. Put yourself out there. Where three rejections may add up to a slump, one hundred rejections will desensitize you to the fear. Build that muscle! Whether you apply this practice to your podcast, job, or other parts of your life, the magic lies in that you can never forecast where the “yeses” will come from. So ask often and ask big! #032 - Join Jennie for the “take messy action” episode, where she discusses adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism. Turns out one of these is good– surprise! Jennie also digs into the fact that comparison is the thief of joy–and comparison goes hand-in-hand with being a perfectionist. The fact is, perfectionist tendencies cause you to either limit your potential or live as a shadow artist, and we'll dive into where this behavior comes from and why it's more prevalent among women. My article about curiosity: Exercising to Make Life More *Titillating*The Confidence Code, by Katty Kay & Claire Shipman. This episode I break down the book: Rejection Proof: How I Beat Fear and Became Invincible Through 100 Days of Rejection by Jia Jiang. Provide the tips and tricks that Jiang used to reprogram his mind to no longer fear rejection, how to be a good rejector and use rejection to learn.
My guest on this episode is one of my good friends, David Knapp-Fisher. We met at the World Domination Summit where we found out that we live 4 blocks apart, and have been constantly connecting ever since. David is a father, speaker, and writer who loves connecting with people – especially the passionate and inspiring ones who lead remarkable lives. He describes himself as a guy who bumbled through school but always knew that he was smart outside of the standard school setting. He worked as a chef for some time until he realized that his passion is connecting with people. We chatted (with David right in my home office) about keeping connections alive, his routine, and the power of saying hello. Some specific topics we talked about are: How we met and first said hello to each other at the World Domination Summit (2:37). The importance of having the right knowledge to be productive. And in cases when you don't how you can tap into gaining more knowledge by finding and saying hello to someone who does have it (5:20; 6:29). David's method to foster and maintain authentic connections through priority, productivity, and doing the right things, (8:54), and a morning coffee-and-email-routine he's been doing to ensure that this aspect is covered in the first hour of his day (11:28). Why it is important to always ask ‘How can I help you?' which according to him may even be more important than saying hello (9:53). My takeaway on his point of view translated into productivity practice - such as going into his email app with missions rather than questions (10:18), and being deliberate in maintaining connections (10:51). The idea that by going into "self-serving mode" that we can wind up serving others. On that note, David shared the story of how merely introducing two people served a larger purpose (15:10). People's tendency to perceive arrogance due to systems we put in place. An example of which is illustrated in my story involving scheduling podcast interviews via Acuity (17:06), and David's experience managing Inspired Victoria and how he was able to resolve this through fairness and honesty (18:30; 23:13). The process he uses if he wants to reach out to people or include people more closely in his life (21:50; 25:26). An interesting rule he enforces in the Inspired Victoria community so people get to connect based on their passions (26:37), and a related story during my theater days about connecting through passions, and how we often miss opportunities like these when we only see things at face value (27:25). A story of saying hello that took so long to happen – maybe brought by fear of rejection – that ultimately led to a friendship (30:25). David's take on processing rejection (32:06), and his final words of advice (33:09). What is the most consistent, if not the biggest, single obstacle to pursuing and achieving the deepest desires of your heart? For many people, it is the fear that when they ask for help in accomplishing something they need or want - whether it's for a raise in pay at work or funding for their start-up venture or even just seeking advice on a vexing situation – that they will be turned away or rejected in some form. If you've ever faced that fear in one form or another, my guest today, Jia Jiang, has experience and helpful advice that can guide you through that process on your creative journey.Jia burst into the public's view within days after he started documenting his ‘100 days of Rejection' project and then posting his efforts on his blog and on YouTube. Each day, Jia would ask someone for a seemingly preposterous request in an attempt to steel himself against rejection and to learn to live more fearlessly. One of his early lessons was that even the most ridiculous request stood a much better chance of being granted if you'll simply ask in the right way. The experience and lessons learned eventually led Jia to writing his bestselling book, “Rejection Proof: How I Beat Fear and Became Invincible Through 100 Days of Rejection”. I met Jia Jiang at the World Domination Summit in Portland OR in 2015 during a workshop he was leading on dealing with rejection. It wasn't just a lecture. He had the group go out on the streets and practice the process of asking for things from people that would surely cause us to face rejection. He called it our ‘rejection therapy' session. Although the exercises weren't the same ones you might experience in your daily life – for example, walking up to strangers and asking for money – the process still lit up the same parts of the brain and brought on the same response of avoidance that we do face every day.
