Are we here to achieve things in our lives, or are we here to simply enjoy our lives? Push ourselves to meet our goals, or chill more and just let life happen? And when we push too hard, striving to reach our dreams or get the job or get in perfect shape, how do we navigate that inevitable stage of burnout? These are the questions that keep Gregory and Vincent up at night. Luckily, they got together for another episode of DTD to hash it out, hoping that what they discover can help you both strive for what you want in life, while ALSO enjoying the journey. Maybe that's the answer? Some combination of the two? Bobbing and weaving. Yin and yang. Appreciating the path—having a path—and moving forth upon it with everything you got. This solo episode explores the question: are you are truly enjoying the experience, the journey, of being alive? What else matters besides that?It makes no difference whether the experience you're in right now is positive or negative—are you embracing it? Drawing inspiration from Michael Singer's teachings, Vinny emphasizes the importance of surrendering to life's flow to find meaning in both the highs and lows of human experience. Vinny reflects on his personal struggles, including chronic pain and the pursuit of a writing career, while encouraging listeners to cherish every moment, because we won't be here for long. We got one shot at this, one life. What's the point if you're not enjoying it? Vinny here. I'm gearing up to write my first fiction novel, based on my experience living in Japan. It's daunting to write fiction when there's already so much good stuff out there. So why do it?Because if you're a dreamer, there's no alternative. The point of writing a book isn't to be better than other books; I'm not trying to be the next Hemingway, or Kerouac, or Murakami. The point to me is honestly not even to make money, although that's an intended byproduct of writing something real and unique.I'm writing these books — even fiction — to figure out who the hell I am and what I'm capable of. Taking on a worthy challenge is what human beings are built for. It's what we crave, and it's what many of us are missing. To continually grapple with a creative challenge is a life well lived. For more Dare to Dream content find us on: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-dare-to-dream-podcast/id1522983890 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/599zlweDDcmXP5YhOX6TFwYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoimyPFCjO_qrJhH4ALafcA Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thedaretodreampodcast/Vincent's Book, When the Sky Opens and the Answers Shimmer: https://www.amazon.com/When-Sky-Opens-Answers-Shimmer/dp/B0DSQ7MYRZ?ref_=ast_author_dp Join Vincent's Newsletter - Vinny's Field Notes: https://vincentvanpatten.substack.com/Join Gregory's Newsletter - Live a Story Worth Telling: https://liveastoryworthtelling.gregoryrussellbenedikt.com/laswt If you're feeling empty despite your “success”, book a discovery call with Gregory: https://calendly.com/gregoryrussellbenedikt-1/discovery-call

After committing to something for years, months, even weeks, you start to feel the burnout. You aren't seeing the return that you expected, and it feels just plain hard.Don't quit. This is the valley of despair, a necessary chapter of any journey worth taking. It's when things don't make sense. You don't feel inspired like you did in the beginning. And you just don't see the point of sticking it out. It's also the point that most people give up. Are you most people? Do you have the perseverance to continue when you don't see the finish line? To pursue something that matters to you when you aren't getting feedback? Will you care even if nobody else does? You don't have to be perfect, or the best with whatever it is your doing. Perhaps the criteria for success is simply to not quit. There's always a reason to give up. We feel it here, too.Well, this podcast is your reason to keep going. You will emerge from this valley one day, having done something truly worthwhile. In our modern age of TikTok and Instagram reels, we're constantly bombarded with businesses and individuals that make us believe overnight success is a real thing. One day the person was just an average bloke, and the next they have 30 million views on YouTube. It's enticing to believe that can be us, too. We just have to hit the algorithm, the trend, the title just right and BAM, we may go viral! We're here to tell you that overnight success is a myth. What you don't see behind the YouTuber who gets worldwide recognition are the hundreds or thousands of failed videos, iterations, and consistent days and repetition of putting in solid work that's good enough. In reality, that's all we can control: not the output (fame, recognition, success) but our inputs (daily videos, articles, cold calls, reps at the gym). If you want to be great, be consistently good for a very long time. That's it. Rather than hoping to one day cross some finish line that will make you happy, make every day a finish line. Did you write today? That's a finish line. Did you post something for your business? That's a finish line. Did you go to the gym? Finish line. That's what it takes. Stack those daily wins and you'll be amazed at where your life will go. No, you may not go viral, but at least you can say I'm giving it all that I have, day in and day out. And if you can actually enjoy those inputs? The gym time or writing or making the videos or whatever it is you do, then does it even matter what comes of it? You're winning at the game of life, my friend. Show notes:How to Be Great? In this episode of the Dare to Dream podcast, I (Vinny) reflect on my transformative two and a half years living in Japan as I prepare to leave the country. I share my experiences of decluttering life as I pack up, the joy of simplicity, and the emotions tied to saying goodbye to meaningful possessions and friendships. Expect to learn about the unique cultural aspects of Japan, particularly my profound love for the konbini (convenience store), which serve as a vital part of Japanese daily life. I also reminisce about cherished memories with best friends and the immense impact this journey has had on my personal growth. This season culminates with a transformative chapter in Tokyo, what I've called my ‘Phoenix era.' This includes my struggles with chronic pain and how I discovered the mind-body connection that has led to healing. Through therapy and self-reflection, I've learned to embrace vulnerability and honor the full breadth of my emotions. This moment is incredibly bittersweet. But this is the life I've chosen, full of goodbyes, new beginnings, and continual exploration of both the inner and outer worlds. The world is hurting right now. We're all affected no matter how removed from the pain we might seem as individuals, whether it's the fires in LA, the wars in Europe and the Middle East, or the general conflicts of ideology. It might seem like we're on the precipice of destruction, but this is nothing new. Times have never been ‘normal.' It's so easy to say, why bother? It's a fair question. Why continue striving to be better? Why pursue your art, personal betterment, or whatever lights you up inside when we don't know if we'll be here tomorrow? Is it naïve? Foolish? Rather, the opposite. Naivety is to believe the world is bereft of pain. To be wise is to understand that the world is cruel, yet to harbor faith that things can always get better, that life, regardless of what's happening around us, is worth living. We must fight for the world we want to live in. Pursuing what lights us up inside, whatever brings us any semblance of joy, is to fight back and not let the darkness win. We are all artists, and the world needs what we have. We must be the light in the world, as it's times like these where we need art, creativity, color, love — the most. We can't give up, ever. In this solo episode of the Dare to Dream podcast, I (Vincent) share my recent experiences in Osaka and Kyoto, reflecting on the value of letting go of expectations and embracing the reality of the situation. I discuss viewing ourselves and life as a weather system; there's nothing to change, hold on to, or worry about. Life is weather. Some days are sunny and the next are rainy. I like the beach in the sun and I like to be cozy in the rain. All seasons of life have their pros and cons. To flow with them instead of fighting them is liberation. I also touch on the significance of facing life's challenges with an open heart, emphasizes the beauty of life's unpredictability and the growth that comes from navigating through both joyful and difficult times. We appreciate and love you all, and wish you happy holidays!! See you in 2025 for another epic year of Daring to Dream. Chronic pain is a topic that's often been explored on this podcast, as Vinny has been traversing a bout of chronic back pain for the entirety of his twenties. That makes this episode a special one, as we sat down with Dr. Peter Zafirides, co-founder and president of Central Ohio Behavioral Medicine in Columbus, and key player in the world of mind-body healing. On this episode of DTD, Dr. Zafirides shares his journey as a psychiatrist, as well as profound insights into depression, chronic pain, and the mind-body connection—areas in which he's had his own struggles and has since overcome. He discusses the complexities of mental health, the interplay between emotions, our personalities and physical pain, and the value of understanding and processing emotions like guilt and anger. The discussion also touches on the stigma surrounding psychiatry, the importance of self-compassion in healing, the need for a more holistic approach to pain management, and the profound meaning gleaned from challenging life experiences. There is nothing to solve right now. There is nothing to be right now. There is nothing to fix, to understand, to discover, to heal. There is no finish line that you must reach which will mean you've finally made it. Tune out the noise on social media and elsewhere that says we must do more and be more now. That's not reality. Achieving our goals takes patience. Patience plus consistently doing the work over a long enough period of time—years, or even decades—will take you further than you can possibly imagine. Take the weight off. Take a breath. A direction in which to walk is more important than a destination. It doesn't all need to happen now. It's Saturday, and I (Vinny) want to get out of Tokyo and into some nature. It's a rainy day. I decide to go about two hours north of Tokyo into the hills of Okutama, where there's a lake, hiking, and a charming town. I stand on the platform, waiting for the train. Rain is coming down beyond the roofs of the station. I have coffee warming my hands, and an adventure in store. I feel like me. Happy. I don't need much else. We're struggling to find meaning in this world. It's not on social media, or in the separation, the anger, the noise. It's in following this feeling — whatever makes you come alive, whatever reignites the heart of the child that perhaps has lost their way. Follow that ancient feeling to the ends of the earth. What is the meaning of suffering? It isn't something we ask for, yet suffering afflicts every human being in some capacity, whether physically, emotionally, spiritually, or existentially (perhaps it's all the same). It's how we respond to what we can't control in life that defines our time on planet Earth. “You desire to know the art of living, my friend?” said Henri Frédéric Amiel, the 19th-century Swiss philosopher and poet. “Make use of suffering.” In this episode, Gregory and Vincent discuss the concept of the ‘lonely chapter' in one's life—the period of striving to make a change that goes against the grain, one you may have to make alone. A meaningful existence isn't gonna be full of endless creativity, sunshine and pats on the back, as meaning comes not only from doing what makes us happy. It's the challenges of life—the suffering—which can serve as the most profound opportunities for real transformation and finding one's purpose, something Vincent and Gregory have experienced themselves. “When most people think about the future, they dream up ways that they might live happier lives,” says Dr. James Davies, psychotherapist and author of books including The Importance of Suffering. “But notice this phenomenon: when people remember the crucial events that formed them, they don't usually talk about happiness. Most people shoot for happiness, but feel formed through suffering.” While we're fighting the good fight, sometimes we just gotta laugh at the absurdity of life. It's really all out of our control, anyway. Hopefully this podcast makes you think. But ultimately, we hope it puts a smile on your face and makes the trials of being a human being on this mystifying rock a bit more bearable. In this solo episode, I (Vincent) share my recent experiences navigating a transition period in my life. I don't know what the hell is going to happen next—yet, I feel a peace I haven't had in a long time. My recent Burning Man experience taught me to go all in on me—my style, my passions, my calling to be uncommon. We all hear that call in ways big and small. Do I stand out, or fit in? Be me, or play it safe and do what I'm “supposed” to do? The call is there—your future self trying to pull you toward a life of meaning and fulfillment and authenticity. It's scary. We gotta go all in on us, and that means we're going to have to stand out. That means we may feel alone while we navigate the unknown. That's okay. Look for the signs, and take those steps toward the life that YOU are meant to live. Not your parents, not your friends, but you. The life of your dreams is waiting. Take the leap. Go all in. Embrace your uniqueness. Be uncommon. On this episode, Gregory and Vince discuss a concept known as the beautiful destruction, where sometimes our lives need to blow up, collapse and fall apart to be rebuilt that much stronger from the ground up. That is indeed what it feels like Vince is going through. A beautiful destruction indeed; we might ask ourselves: what should I have done? Why is this happening? What am I supposed to do? Should I be further along? Etc. So many shoulds—we're just should-ing all over ourselves! What if instead of questioning how things should be different, we trust everything is happening EXACTLY as it's meant to? Vinny here. I've realized that I couldn't move forward with my life and heal the chronic back pain that I've dealt with for the past six years until I learned to love myself, here, now, exactly as I am. I've felt guilt. Shame. Anger. Sadness. I thought they were all due to the chronic pain, but the pain was just a mask for the underlying emotions. I felt unworthy of certain things; these feelings simply don't help us. We all feel them. We're human. It's not always as easy as just saying, love yourself! We gotta look deeply into our own eyes and ask, why do I feel this way? Is it truly serving me to wake up and criticize myself every day? Is this pain physical, or is the emotional negativity I'm harnessing in my heart and soul, causing my physical body to rot? Everything is changing. It's time to let go of all that shit. Let it go, you are made for more. The energy of my being is shifting; the way I see the world, my past, and myself; what I feel I can achieve, and what I expect from the future. What I believe I'm worth. I can't move on until I fully embrace this stage of my life, and even say thank you, pain. Thank you for all that you have given me. Thank you for waking me up, and asking, demanding, that I see my life clearly. I'm done fighting. I embrace what we've been through with the entirety of my being. But it's time for you to go. Life right now is truly beyond my comprehension. Everything is changing. I (Vinny) am honored to record another podcast with Santana, who is one of my very best friends, a mentor, a spiritual guide, and just a rock in my life. We met last year in Osaka, yet it feels like we've been friends for decades, and even longer, perhaps in a past life. On this episode of DTD we explore the themes of presence, personal growth, and the importance of authentic human connections—topics that are integral to this podcast and to our friendship. We touch on the fear of change and the importance of embracing one's own weirdness, which allows others to evolve and become their best selves, too. That person might be different from the person we know, and that is okay. The concept of the hero's journey is also highlighted, which has been instrumental in inspiring me on my own spiritual odyssey of healing pain. “It's our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.” — Marianne Williamson, A Return To Love In this conversation, Gregory and Vincent discuss the deep-seated fear that reigns in all of us: that of embracing our true greatness. To embrace our own greatness, we must admit to ourselves that what we want isn't normal, nor is it what everybody else seems to want. What we want isn't secure or realistic, but it's ours—our dream—and we owe it to ourselves to entertain that dream. We feel that we aren't worthy to live the life we truly wish to live, so we dim our own light in an effort to blend in, taking on the projections of others, instead of taking off our masks and shining as we are. It isn't our inadequacy, our shadow, our darkness that scares us most. It's the light that's begging to shine. After suffering for 4 years from depression, Tim went from the top sales producer in his company to getting laid off just three months into the pandemic. On this episode of The Dare to Dream Podcast, I (Vinny) discuss the spiritual odyssey I have now embarked upon. For the last six years, I thought my chronic pain has been physical. But after last month—the most challenging month I think I've had throughout my twenties—I broke down. This was my lowest point. Yet, it's exactly what I needed to change my perspective and look at this pain and my life in a totally different way. To heal my body I must heal my mind, my heart, and my soul; if I don't the pain will never let me go. It's not even about my back anymore. It's about going deep within to finally and totally explore my inner landscape, my past, my fears, and my emotional pain. It feels like I'm finally crossing the threshold from childhood to adulthood. Healing my back will merely be a byproduct. This is the most important work I'll ever do, and I'm so, so excited to begin this odyssey, giving it everything I have. Enjoy the show. On this episode, I (Vinny) share my full chronic back pain story, which includes how my pain came about, what finding effective treatments has been like, what I'm doing now to overcome the pain, and the physical and emotional toll of living with pain. Yet, like most of what I write and share about my back condition, this is a story of faith, meaning, and perseverance in the midst of adversity. I also discuss my desire to explore the world and go for my dreams despite the limitations of chronic pain. I've felt on my own as I've dealt with this chronic back pain for the entirety of my twenties. But now I know there are countless others like me who are experiencing something similar. This is for you. This is for me. This is for anyone who's enduring what they can't understand.
