Have you ever started crying for apparently "no reason"? Have you ever had a reaction that afterwards seemed "disproportionate"? Do you ever feel incredibly fearful, even when you rationally know it doesn't really make sense? If so, you were probably feeling triggered. The term “trigger” is a little bit overused these days, but they are real, and they can have a huge impact on our mental health. Stemming from the memory of traumatic or difficult past experiences, triggers are subconscious and irrational fears our emotional memory imposes on us. Today I am going to talk about how they affect us, and more importantly, how to effectively DEAL with triggers and let them go on our own, with no external reassurance (because girl, your trigger, your responsibility). For that purpose, I tell you a little bit about my own journey with triggers, particularly in romantic relationships, and how I've worked on them, both with my therapist and on my own.INTERESTING RESOURCES:Call Her Daddy Podcast episode with Shay Mitchell clip on YouTube.Psych Central (2022) What Are Triggers, and How Do They Form? She has an impressive track record of entrepreneurial success, having launched three multimillion-dollar businesses, including a highly successful personal brand. She is the driving force behind the Mindshare Collaborative, a leading professional community in the health industry, renowned for launching numerous New York Times bestsellers, PBS specials, and successful seven-figure brands. Her influence also extends to television and media. She co-hosted TLC's 'Freaky Eaters' and was the go-to nutrition expert for Dr. Phil's Weight Loss Challenges. Her expertise has been showcased across various platforms, including PBS, Dr. Oz, Rachael Ray, Access Hollywood, and The TODAY Show.  As an accomplished speaker, she has captivated audiences of over 10,000 and shared stages with luminaries such as Tony Robbins, Seth Godin, Lisa Nichols, Gary Vaynerchuk, Dr. Mark Hyman, Dan Buettner, and Mary Morrissey. Join us as we dive into a conversation with the incredible JJ Virgin, exploring the transformative power of nutrition and wellness. [05:57] Aging Powerfully: People who are positive about aging live longer. Mindset is key. JJ decided to get in the best shape of her life at 60. [07:23] Starting around age 30, how we build muscle shifts. Without protein and resistance training, we can lose 3% to 8% of muscle a decade. [08:20] When we lose muscle, we lose our power. We lose our type 2 muscle fiber which influences everything. [09:05] We need to train and build a strong foundation. [11:31] Mental, emotional, and spiritual health ties into physical health. [14:06] Shifting to exercise and health when you're in recovery will make you feel better than ever. [15:55] Replace negative habits with healthy habits. [17:08] Don't be the oldest person in the room in fitness class. We have to continue to progress while aging powerfully. [18:15] You can progress in your resistance routine by changing the weights and exercises etc. You can also change things up with your other exercises or type of yoga. [19:29] The true definition of exercise is doing more than your body is used to so that it will get stronger. [21:34] There's so much to being an expert from knowing the science to having field experience.  [23:44] Mindset is first. The three pillars are food & supplements, exercise & activity, and how you recover. [27:18] JJ shares how important sleep is.  [29:16] Get curious and pay attention to what works for you.  [30:30] To improve how we age: Have a purpose. Have an amazing group of humans. Move a lot. [36:25] Speed of stair climbing matters.  [37:05] Alcohol can disrupt sleep and contribute to adipose tissue. It's also a common factor in blue zones. [39:24] JJ shares her opinion on drinking.  [40:56] The biggest thing that's impacted with grass-fed or wild is the fat. JJ shares what we get when we eat non grass-fed or wild meat. [44:54] JJ tries to be careful with food, but also lives in the real world.  [47:32] Grass-fed meat is nutrient dense and more lean. [49:09] We need creatine for explosive exercise. It also helps with mood, brain function, bone health, skin health, and so much more. [50:11] Foundational supplements include creatine, D3 and K2, fish oil, and magnesium. JJ also likes collagen. And protein powder and essential amino acids.  [54:15] Our bodies can handle acute stress. Our bodies weren't built for chronic stress. This includes not sleeping enough, poor nutrition, and not living enough. [55:03] Stress raises your cortisol and keeps it up. It also puts you in a catabolic state and makes it very hard to build muscle. Higher blood sugar makes you more insulin resistant and leads to belly fat. [58:02] Eating healthy and exercise will help with stress, but some mindfulness meditation and breath work is essential.  Links mentioned in this episode: Camelback Recovery I Love Being Sober YouTube JJ Virgin 7-Day Eat Protein First Challenge JJ Virgin YouTube JJ Virgin Instagram JJ Virgin Facebook The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Toltec Wisdom Book)

On this week's episode, you will understand your subconscious mind, and your subconscious limiting beliefs, a little better: Where do they come from? Are they serving you? Should you ditch them and go for new ones? As Don Miguel Ruiz would say, humans before us have designed a "dream of the planet", or "society's dream", and we've been raised to believe and perpetuate that belief system... But it might be serving you less than you think. Relationships of any kind can be hard, especially if you have subconscious fears and limiting beliefs stemming from past experiences (with parents, family members, or romantic relationships). Fear of abandonment is a very common fear that holds us back. On today's episode, I get a little bit more personal: I'm letting you in on what I like to call my "self-therapy sessions", where I remind myself of much-needed wisdom I've been lucky enough to learn throughout my self-improvement journey, and that I can sometimes forget. I tell you about my own fear of abandonment, its source, and discuss three different strategies to deal with uncertainty. Uncertainty is the only certainty in life, so we'd better learn to face it with as much peace of mind and inner calm as we can, right? It can be hard, but I've got you, and as you'll discover, you've got yourself.RESOURCES:Ruiz, M (1997; 2018 edition) The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Toltec Wisdom Book). Since we were kids, we've been taught to look at the world, and interpret it, in a specific way. We may not be aware of it, but we've been educated in a culture that encourages a scarcity mindset, a perspective of lack. We believe in the Ego, in our victim voice, which is the voice of fear. On this episode, we'll go in on how to step out of that scarcity mentality and choose an abundance mentality, because you are abundant, right now. Abundance is a choice, it is the voice of love, and it gets you closer to your Highest Self. Your Ego is part of the reason why you might perceive challenges, failures, and setbacks as something bad, when you can actually choose to see them as opportunities, and use them to build your path towards greatness, like Obama, Oprah, Michael Jordan, J. K. Rowling  or Steve Jobs did.RESOURCESChopra, D. (1996) The Seven Spiritual Laws Of Success: A Practical Guide To The Fulfilment Of Your Dreams. Bantam Press, Transworld Publishers.Issa, M. How do you transition from working in the corporate to finally starting and leading your own business? While it's not entirely impossible—I know a lot of people who took a leap of faith and started their own entrepreneurial journey—it takes a special kind of courage, especially for women and women of color to transition from the corporate setting to leading their own companies. So really, how do you do this? For Lesa Adeboye, CEO of Alliance Group, it's a matter of presenting your authentic self and building genuine relationships. With her mantra of “where there's a will, there's a way,” Lesa reminds us that it's not about being good at everything, but it's about knowing how to make real partnerships and identify the best people to engage when opportunities arise. In this episode, Lesa and I talk about her knowledge of govcon and how the desire for freedom motivated her to start her successful business after over 20 years in corporate. Thriving Points:I wasn't fearful about anything. But I made a lot of mistakes. Coming out of corporate, I thought I knew everything, so I had to learn that business is a whole other beast. I had to humble myself, but that took some time. I made a lot of mistakes but I learned a lot from the mistakes that I've made. - Lesa AdeboyeWhat I have learned—and it's taken a while—is bringing my authentic self to the table and making genuine relationships, doing business with the people that my personality resonates with. - Lesa AdeboyeI love women-owned businesses because I see it as an avenue to freedom. Consider the importance of the words that you use so that you are seen, heard and respected. In this episode: The article written by Scott Mabry called "The Words You Leave Behind" was the catalyst for this topic of the podcast. Saira Taneja is Chief Experience Officer at Cover Whale, a leading commercial trucking insurance provider and fast-growing insurtech.   Taneja brings over a decade of experience in the health insurance sector across various functional areas where she held multiple leadership roles. Her passion for innovative market offerings led her to Cover Whale. Leveraging her expertise in scaling businesses, while also achieving customer-centricity has been instrumental in the company's success. She currently oversees the Growth, Marketing and Customer Success organisations.  She holds a BA in International Business from Bentley University, and an MBA from Bentley's McCallum Graduate School of Business.   Questions   • Now, we always like to give our guests an opportunity to share in their own words a little bit about their journey. So, could you take a few minutes just to share with our listeners, how it is that you got to where you are today? • What is Cover Whale for those of our listeners that don't know what your company does, could you share with us? • One of the things that I think would be important for these kinds of experiences to have a more of an omni channel approach to your service experience or your service delivery, could you share with us maybe three things that your organisation is doing that creates that kind of experience? Or if you're not doing it, maybe something you're working towards doing. • Could you also share maybe two to three pain points that your end users pretty much complain about with your service that you're providing? What are some of your pain points that you're solving on a day to day basis? • Could you share with us what's the one online resource, tool, website or app that you absolutely can't live without in your business? • Could you also share with us maybe one or two books that you have read that have had a great impact on you? It could be a book that you read a very long time ago, or even one that you've read recently. • From a leadership perspective, what are some things that you do to ensure that your team is motivated, and your team is doing all the best they can do to deliver that experience, not just for your end users, but also internally to each other? • Now, could you also share what's one thing that's going on in your life right now that you're really excited about? Either something you're working on to develop yourself or your people. • Where can listeners find you online? • Do you have a quote or saying that during times of adversity or challenge, you will tend to revert to this quote, if for any chance you got derailed, or you got distracted and you kind of use that quote to kind of just to get you back on track, get you back focused? Do you have one of those? Highlights  Saira's Journey  Saira shared that she likes to say that her career took a corporate path, albeit, not a linear one. And she tends to follow her passions for the next step. And so, without going into every twist and turn in her history, really it is that she started out, as mentioned, in sort of the International Business track, that's where she thought she wanted to go, worked in Embassy for a summer in DC, decided that was not for her and wanted to go into business.   And so, really work from sales and marketing, product, strategy, CX all with a common thread of strategy and CX throughout her career and ended up in the health insurance sector. It happened by chance and a lot of them that are in the insurance space, say they got here by chance, that they stayed here because of the opportunity and really have developed a passion for it.  And so, Cover Whale came knocking about a year ago at this point with this amazing opportunity that was really an amalgamation of all of her corporate experiences into one beautifully challenging job and she said yes. And so, that's what led her to her current post, as mentioned, overseeing the growth organization, marketing, customer success but really leading the charge on experience for Cover Whale.    About Cover Whale – What Does the Company Do? Saira shared that Cover Whale is an Insurtech, so that's shorthand for an Insurance Technology company, and MGA. And for those of the listeners that are not familiar with an MGA, that's an Managing General Agent. So, an MGA is really a go between between the carrier partners. So, they have relationships with a number of different insurance carriers, and the Managing General Agent have functions that allow them to really underwrite. And so, they've been granted underwriting authority by the insurance companies with which they partner to bind, to underwrite, to price, to settle claims, and to point in retail agents.  So, all that to say is they are an entity between their carrier partners, and then retail agents, that's really their primary distribution channel in the commercial trucking space. So, you think of truck drivers driving across America, they need insurance, that's what they're providing. And they're doing it in a digital user-friendly way that hasn't been seen before.   Me: So, your primary customer are your truck drivers, and when you said insurance, you're talking about like health insurance? Are you also referring to life insurance?   Saira shared that that's interesting, she came from the health insurance space. So, what they're really offering is Commercial Auto Insurance. So, for their box trucks, auto haulers, semis, those are different types of vehicles, and for the cargo that they carry.  So, they are offering Commercial Auto Insurance for the end users or the policy holders, which are the truck drivers or owner operators. And they're doing it through their retail agents. So, she's really excited for today's conversation because it's a pretty complicated space and they really have multiple stakeholders. So, when they think about experience, not only is it about the end users or drivers, it's about those that are distributing the insurance to them, which primarily for them is retail agents or wholesalers with whom they partner with.   Creating an Omni Channel Experience  Me: So, one of the things that I think would be important for these kinds of experience to have a more of an omni channel approach to your service experience or your service delivery, could you share with us maybe three things that your organization is doing that creates that kind of experience? Or if you're not doing it, maybe something you're working towards doing.   Saira stated that she loves that question, so, it's really interesting that Yanique said the word omni channel. And she thinks that means different things to different companies. But really, where most companies start is, you have service, so you have a place where people who might have questions or an issue can go to and call you as a company, right? They (Cover Whale) and others have a call line to be able to reach out to them, so that's one point in the experience.  And really, they also allow their partners to reach out to them via email, that's another point. But really where the majority of their experience is delivered is through their proprietary platform that they've built in house.  And that's where they go to bind coverage for policyholders. And so, what she'll say is, what she just described really is a multi-channel experience, right? You have various points in the interaction with Cover Whale and other companies where you can reach out, but multi-channel are siloed.   And so, she thinks you're asking about omni channel, which is how are you connecting all those points together, and that's something that they are working on internally that she knows every company is really after, because some of the best experienced companies in the world have figured out, you reach out to them one way, they know when you've reached out to them a different way and they're able to take the data that you've given them or information you've given them through those different channels and put it all in one place so that your experience is standardised across various channels.  So, that's something that they're working towards and getting better at every day. And really, it starts with centralization of data. And so, just with your questions of three different ways, she just described them. So, email, calling, as well as the platform as well as they have an app. And what she loves to say is that, in today's day and age, there are so many different channels from which customers can reach out and it's a matter of marrying all of them together into one omni channel experience.   Pain Points Cover Whale is Solving Me: Could you also share maybe two to three pain points that your end users pretty much complain about with your service that you're providing? What are some of your pain points that you're solving on a day to day basis?    Saira stated that that's a really great question. And she'll be very honest with you, Cover Whale grew really, really quickly. The company was founded in 2020 and they're sitting here almost midway through 2023, they did not realize they'd experienced this level of explosive growth.  And so, with that, obviously come service challenges. When customers used to reach out to them, they wouldn't hear back in really a very quick fashion. And so, what they've done over the last year is really work on their timeliness. What they done is, they stood up a number of self-service tools. So, a knowledge base, a chatbot. They've stood up internal service level requirements for their team to achieve on the service side for getting to first contact resolution of an 85%, for an email response time of four hours.  And so, she would say to the question, it's really about speed of service that they've worked on and done really well at and you know what, at the end of the day, it's leveraging technology to be able to help and anybody can staff with hundreds of people to get to the hundreds of inquiries that are coming in, but it's really about being smart and applying technology so that you can drive down inquiries and also make improvements. The questions that were coming in, it gave them real insight into the pain points that they should be solving, sort of at the top of the funnel, rather than staffing for on the other end.   App, Website or Tool that Saira Absolutely Can't Live Without in Her Business When asked about an online resource that she can't live without in her business, Saira stated that she loves this one. She likes to stick to and there are so many but for her, it's Miro. What she loves doing and if you ever visit their Cover Whale offices in New York and she welcomes you to do so. You're going to find post its everywhere. When they're in person, folks have known have visited the office when they're post its all around the room and more of the team is leveraging them now.  But she thinks it's really important to map the end to end journey for whatever it is that you're trying to solve for. Because sometimes one part of the company may be doing something that another part of the company may not be aware of. So, sitting and mapping step by step from a user's perspective is so important. And so, Miro is really the digital version of that. If you've ever used it, it's essentially a whiteboard with sticky notes, digitally, they can be any size, shape, colour, and you essentially do the same thing. And so, she uses that fairly often in a virtual setting.   Books that Have Had the Biggest Impact on Saira When asked about books that have had a great impact, Saira shared that one that she loves, if folks that are listening that have not read before, it's really old, it's probably from like the late 90s, but it had quite an impact on her life, it's called The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Toltec Wisdom Book). So, she loves that one. And not to steal the thunder of the book. But really, it's four agreements that you can apply to your life, starting with being impeccable with your word. To always doing your best and a lot of really good wisdom in the middle. And just to give credit where credit is due, that's by Don Miguel Ruiz, a Mexican author.  And the other one is by an Organizational Psychologist, Adam Grant, called Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know. And she found that one really enlightening and eye opening, because there are a lot of assumptions and biases and everybody's thinking that they may not even know that they have. And it's really about questioning everything that comes to mind and really encouraging others to question also, facts that we all may think are facts are likely have changed over time, the world is a dynamic place. And so, it's about thinking and thinking again, so she would encourage listeners to read that one if they haven't yet.   Ensuring the Team is Motivated to Deliver the Best Experience to the End Users and Internally Me: Now your role, Saira at Cover Whale is Chief Experience Officer and that's a very big role. I can imagine in terms of leadership, you have to have strong leadership, certain kinds of skills to ensure that you are leading a team that is not just doing things because you've told them to do it, but they are intrinsically motivated to do it. And so, from a leadership perspective, for those of our listeners, who are tapping into this episode, and they'd like to sharpen their leadership skills, especially with post COVID, lots of people are burnt out mentally, they might not necessarily like everything about what they do and sometimes that energy comes over in their drive and the work that they get done. What are some things that you do to ensure that your team is motivated, and your team is doing all the best they can do to deliver that experience, not just for your end users, but also internally to each other?   Saira stated that she loves that question. So, when you think about experience, it's not just the experience that you're delivering, it's the experience of the people with whom you're working with every single day. If the experience of the people you're working with is not good, more likely than not, your customers are not happy either. And so, it starts with the culture, it starts in the organization and for her, her leadership style is really one of being a servant leader. It's about listening to those that she leads in her organization and understanding what's working well, what isn't.  Saira shared that she is actually on a listening tour right now with their agent partners, she's trying to meet with one every single day, it might take her years to get through all of them because there are thousands but she offers this as a suggestion to other leaders who are listening to this podcast because leadership has a tendency, we want measurement, NPS, customer effort, customer satisfaction, what is the data telling us, and you will get insights from surveys, absolutely and that should be happening too.  But just pausing and calling your customer, reaching out to them, having a meeting, sitting down with them, asking for feedback is so powerful. She has learnt so much in the last x months of sitting down with partners every single day that she doesn't think she would have gotten the same colour from a PowerPoint presentation on sort of survey insights. And so, she just encourages listeners to reach out and have a conversation, you might learn something that your customers would not have offered in an online survey or other medium. So, just ask and listen, active listening is such an important part of what we can all do. They've hired the best of the best, really, and so it's about making sure they have everything that they need to do their best work. And what she can say to you is that in terms of their experience, they've purposely developed the culture internally at Cover Whale to be one that's employee centric. And in being employee centric also means that they have the power to do right by their customers and their stakeholders. And so, what she asked the team to do is in every interaction, or anything that they're standing up, whether it be at the product level, whether it be in communications, is this something that you would like to be on the receiving end of if you're in the shoes of their customer?  She thinks that's so important. They're not just going to a company everyday working and going home and turning off, they're actively building something and creating something that their customers are experiencing, that they experience, frankly, 1000s of times a day in their interactions with other companies. So, she thinks it's really about bringing that message home and empowering their people to be able to do right by their end users.   What Saira is Really Excited About Now! When asked what's one thing that's going on right now that she's excited about, Saira stated that that's a great question. She stated that it's figuring out how to harness technology for service. And when she says service, she doesn't just mean their service centre. When it comes to insurance, once somebody signs on the dotted line, everything that comes after over the next year is service, if they need to reach out, if they need to make a change, if something has happened unfortunately, that's service and so how do they harness technology to be able to help with that service and ChatGPT is such an interesting point in their life, and in society to figure out how to mindfully apply technology so that we can free up humans to do more value-add work, and really drive the empathy that all people want.  At the end of the day, people are looking for a connection at a certain point, they may not want to talk to a person for a common question that they can get responded to via Chatbot or that they can find a knowledge base. But she thinks that's one of the most interesting things that they're really thinking through right now of how do you apply technology to be able to free up people to be able to do more value-add work? And she thinks this is not just a question that she has internally with Cover Whale, she thinks this is a question that leaders are asking throughout. And really everybody's asking of what is this going to mean five years down the road?   Me: Agreed. It's interesting you mentioned ChatGPT because I don't believe that is going to replace people. And I totally agree with you that the question should be, how can we use the technology to answer more mundane, run of the mill kind of questions, and then the more complex tasks that require a high level of empathy, the emotions and the workings of a human being that chat or a bot or any form of artificial intelligence can't deliver, the humans can be freed up to deal with those kinds of scenarios.   Saira stated yes, she totally agrees with that.   Me: So, in continuation of that whole point, do you see ChatGPT evolving, and exploding, or even something that's being added on to that like in the next, I would say, 12 months? Because it's definitely a buzz thing that's happening, have you found ways in your organisation to make it work?   Saira stated that they have and it's interesting. So, what she would say is, she thinks that her inclination right now, based on what she's seen, is that she would not want to apply it just front and centre to their customers. She thinks from a service standpoint, it's really unpredictable. In terms of what you might get back, but she thinks it's really compelling to use as a tool, which is where she hopes we all end up going, if you think about a calculator being introduced to the world, and everybody's saying, “Oh, no, nobody's going to learn how to do math.” And it's like, well, you learn to use it as a tool for analysis, for research.  And so, that's really how they're trying to leverage it, of are there certain things that they might be able to input into it? Can it crunch massive amounts of data to be able to give them insights that otherwise would have taken them weeks to do?  For instance, are they able to take certain inputs and filter it through, of course, nothing proprietary or sensitive, and then understand what's working well from the proprietary technology they've stood up. What might be a production error that they're seeing or others. So, she thinks that if organizations can figure out how to optimise their back-end operations by using ChatGPT as a tool, she thinks it would just make us more efficient. But in terms of it being customer facing right now, she doesn't think we're there.   Where Can We Find Saira Online LinkedIn – Saira Taneja           Quote or Saying that During Times of Adversity Saira Uses When asked about a quote or saying that she tends to revert to, Saira shared that she does. The one that she always tends to go back to is Alice Walker, she's an American novelist. She has said, “The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don't have any.” And she loves that because we all have the power, each and every day to drive change. No matter what aspect of life it is and this is what she shares with her teams as well, is that you have the power really to change something. Don't pass the buck, don't think somebody else will do it for you. If you can do it, you have the power to do it, do it.   Me: Awesome. Thank you so much for sharing, Saira. And I think if anything our listeners should take away from this interview is focusing on ensuring that we really pay attention to all of our stakeholders, our employees, our customers, and ensure that we really listen to them as she mentioned, active listening, it's something we take for granted, it's something that we have to do every day in order to communicate. But are we really designating that time and effort to the people who really need to be heard so the real change can be made?    Please connect with us on Twitter @navigatingcx and also join our Private Facebook Community – Navigating the Customer Experience and listen to our FB Lives weekly with a new guest    Links ·  The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Teoltec Wisdom Book) by Don Miguel Ruiz ·  Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know by Adam Grant   The ABC's of a Fantastic Customer Experience Grab the Freebie on Our Website – TOP 10 Online Business Resources for Small Business Owners  Do you want to pivot your online customer experience and build loyalty - get a copy of “The ABC's of a Fantastic Customer Experience.” The ABC's of a Fantastic Customer Experience provides 26 easy to follow steps and techniques that helps your business to achieve success and build brand loyalty. We live with agreements, whether we acknowledge them or not. There are sets of rules and expectations to which we adhere in order to satisfy the demands of others. We've learned to act in accordance with these agreements, to be liked or to fit in, to live, show up and interact with other people in an acceptable manner. In this episode, I discuss the existence of these agreements, specifically four agreements, as don Miguel Ruiz outlines in his short book, The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Toltec Wisdom Book).I particularly like this book because it brings these societal and familial agreements into perspective so we can examine them – and ourselves – more closely. And I want to share with you some ideas and quotes from don Miguel's book, as well as my own thoughts about the concepts.“If we don't like our life, we need to change the agreements we have with ourselves and with others.” – Dr. Sara DillWhat You'll LearnTypes of agreementsBe impeccable with your wordKind and necessaryDon't take things personallyTheir thoughts, feelings, experiencesPeople lie, so do youDon't make assumptionsTell stories to ourselvesAsk questions, make requestsAlways do your bestShow up as yourselfContact Info and Recommended ResourcesBook: The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Toltec Wisdom Book) by don Miguel RuizPodcast Episodes that pair well with this one:Why Other People's Opinions Are None of Your BusinessUnwritten Rules That Keep Us StuckThought Work: The Most Important Work You Can Ever DoLessons Learned from Byron KatieAbout don Miguel Ruizdon Miguel Ruiz is a renowned spiritual teacher and internationally bestselling author of the “Toltec Wisdom Series,” including “The Four Agreements,” “The Mastery of Love,” “The Voice of Knowledge,” “The Four Agreements Companion Book,” “The Circle of Fire,” and “The Fifth Agreement.” The Toltec Wisdom books have sold over 12 million copies, and have been published in 46 languages worldwide.don Miguel has spent the past three decades guiding students to personal freedom through his profound insights regarding the nature of human reality. Don Miguel Ruiz, author of many books including 'The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Toltec Wisdom Book)' uses the term "Domestication" to describe the process by which humans are taught how to live. I have been fascinated by this process, whatever you wish to call it, for as long as I can remember. In fact, I still wonder, often out loud, why no one ever asked whether or not I was agreeing to this social contract. See, we are born into a world that teaches us many things before we even know what's happening to us.And a social contract is very much what domestication is like. We are taught so many things. How to eat, how to walk, how to speak, what to believe in, where Santa Claus lives, which religion is best, whether or not skin color matters. . . . The list is infinite. We are TAUGHT these things. Many of these things are opinions, some of them are factual, and very few of them are valuable. Because some rules are totally important. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Don't spit at people. Don't eat raw kittens. So, sure, some of the domestication process is good and even fundamentally necessary to a healthy society. The PROBLEM IS, that much of the domestication process is not only unnecessary, it's unfair. And in the context of the Are vs. Should Problem, domestication becomes the Should Bully by teaching us what to think, how to act, and what or whom to believe in. And the WORST part is, much of this domestication occurs before we can consent. We are, in fact, brainwashed at very early ages to follow the rules. Again, some of this is good, but a lot of it is NOT. But it's ok, IF we understand this and can go back and edit ourselves, or update what we believe, feel, and do as we grow and change. The lucky ones, usually in our teenage years but often again in mid life, realize we have learned some weird shit. At certain times in our lives we QUESTION our own beliefs. We get CURIOUS about our thoughts. We WONDER who is really making our decisions. If we're lucky something encourages us to question WHO WE ARE. It is at these times we have a chance to take back our lives, our minds, and our DNA.This week I share my thoughts about the Domestication process, discuss the damages caused, and provide a warning about our future. Solutions are necessary and urgent. Please follow this series and help me find some.

Not all would agree, but science and metaphysics, when combined, can give you a more nourishing perspective on life. In this episode of the Fire In The Belly Podcast, Mighty Pete talks to Coach, Speaker, and Podcaster Padma Ali, about the powerful results that neuropsychology, energy healing, and inner wisdom can produce. There is a mysterious link that exists that, when acknowledged, can help us create a purpose-driven life and achieve our highest potential. Let Padma give you a thorough discourse on these today. Other topics discussed: the benefits of mastering energy alignment, the existence of divine feminine and divine masculine in an individual, the skewed concept of being a high achiever, the life of Indian women, creating your vibrant life, and more. KEY TAKEAWAYS The metaphysical has always fascinated Padma. She believes we’re all moving energies in this environment. We must think that we alone as individuals must be purposeful when we traverse our journeys as it is like a domino effect—what we do may impact others too. Each one of us has a divine masculine and divine feminine in us. Both are vital for creation. The divine feminine is the creator and the visionary while the divine masculine helps to make the change happen. An individual embracing both his divine energies is said to be balanced and unstoppable in reaching greater heights. Something isn’t right when something doesn’t feel right. Trust your intuition. It isn’t irrational at all if you base your decision on your ‘gut feel’ because it is you who’s in control of everything in your life. If you’re driven with fear and there’s no motivation, then it would be difficult making positive progress. Padma admits she spent her life before as a high achiever/overachiever before experiencing living in alignment. Mostly, it’s because of her upbringing. Padma experienced strict parenting and inequality in society as an Indian woman. How can you truly live when you’re always worrying about other people’s happiness and their image of you? You can only do so much. You have to mind how you can achieve your own peace and happiness. Padma is an Energy Alignment Coach. She helps high achievers ‘rediscover themselves and take aligned actions to create powerful results’. The change is matchless and satisfying, she always assures her clients, as she recalls too how very high-strung her environment is before she discovered it. BEST MOMENTS “I used to be a high achiever, but I no longer subscribe to that terminology.” “I’ve continued acquiring knowledge, but not in a traditional sense.” “Fire in the belly means being able to access who you truly are beyond what I call myself in this 3d world.” “I completely surrender to the power of the divine.” “If you’re in alignment, it doesn’t feel like work.” “I’m very grateful for the journey that has brought me to this place in life.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Read Padma Ali’s recommended books: Change Me Prayers: The Hidden Power of Spiritual Surrender. “What would you want for your child?” Sometimes, it just needs to be asked so we recalibrate ourselves and be the best model we can be for them. In this episode of the Fire In The Belly Podcast, we hear Annie Henderson, the Moms Empowerment Coach and host of the Happy Mama Village Podcast, to talk about how she started a community of strong women who support each other. Annie also shares some personal stories—how she aces being a mum, how she came out to her family, how she continues to be impactful to other people, especially women, and more. Tune in now to know more about her, her projects, and some parenting tips! KEY TAKEAWAYS Don’t wait till your child reaches the teenage years to start honing good habits (and correcting the bad ones). Annie emphasises how important the formative years of a child are. During early childhood, the physical, emotional, and social development that is happening is crucial. Your duty as a parent, an educator, or a counsellor is to push the child onto the right path. Annie worked as a school counsellor. And one of her first objectives was to let the kids know who she was and how she can be a reliable person in their lives. When we introduce ourselves and show how supportive we are to our kids, then we build trust and it becomes easy for them to approach you. Fear will hold you back. Fear of rejection will not make you succeed; fear of conflicts will not let you understand and improve yourself. Limiting beliefs will truly stop you from achieving any of your goals. Learn to teach yourself and your children how to be perceptive and courageous so they’ll be ready with whatever life throws at them. It was difficult for Annie to be true to herself before and to come out to her religious family. There are still a number who aren’t as welcoming as we thought to the LGBT+ community. She was also still with the father of her child that time. Does she have to limit herself so she cannot ‘hurt’ other people? It took a lot of courage to finally do it. BEST MOMENTS “If you’re not happy, if you’re not being authentic, then what are your kids gonna learn from you?” “Be impeccable with your word.” “It’s not because people expect things; it’s that we think people expect stuff from us.” “All relationships should start planning ahead.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Learn about The Roadtrip To Happiness: An Online Course for Moms here: https://www.thehappymamavillage.com/ Read The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Toltec Wisdom Book) by Don Miguel Ruiz. It’s time to be confident and authentic so we can live our lives to the fullest! In this episode of the Fire In The Belly Podcast, we talk about the trinity within you—your body, mind, and soul. Our guest, Anna Cantwell is a Soul Coach and Meditation expert who has helped women get to know themselves, be bolder, and traverse their path to self-fulfilment. She has had her dark moments before, and as a survivor, she wants to share her experience and the wisdom with people. Some topics discussed today are the power of abundance mindset, accepting our spiritual side, the benefits of a great mental health state to our physical health, the consciousness of each individual, and more. Join Mighty Pete and Anna today! KEY TAKEAWAYS I came into the world with my third eye open – As a ‘soul coach’, Anna is similar to a life coach and helps individuals link their own mind, body, and spirit. She focuses on the connection and intersection between those three entities. They won’t ever be separated from each other. Poor mental health can greatly deteriorate the state of your physical health, and vice versa. Keep them both—not just one—in check every time. It’s good that you listen to what your body is telling you. If you don’t have the appetite or you feel your stomach hurting, then most likely, there is something bothering you. But better yet, make sure to meet with a counsellor. Ever had the ‘gut feeling’? There are a lot of neurotransmitters located near your stomach. According to Anna, any stomach issue might be related to your mental or brain health. Beware of the scarcity mindset; practice the abundance mindset. It’s not true there is only one pot of gold. There are immense resources and immense rewards you can get. You have to believe that you can fulfil your needs and wants on your own terms. Focus on what you can do and what you have. When you show up every day with your authentic self, you attract the right people—the ones who resonate with you and can support you throughout. We can never survive life with fake lifestyle and fake people. Let’s avoid having to live a life full of regrets. BEST MOMENTS “I see ‘fire in the belly’ as the desire and the will to really live, and to live life fully.” “There are several daily practices that we can do to make sure that we’re headed in a path that we actually want.” “Our paths are so unique that age means really nothing.” “I choose to invest money, time, resources, etc. in myself… I am the greatest investment I could make.” “It’s not my business to tell someone what they need to believe or how they need to operate.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Mind Tribes or MT Online School of Yoga: https://mind-tribes.com/ Read The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Toltec Wisdom Book) by Don Miguel Ruiz. Cindy: (00:00) This is Exploring the Seasons of Life podcast episode 15. I’m Cindy MacMillan and today I am being interviewed by my friend Debra Healey. Cindy: (00:10) Welcome to Exploring the Seasons of Life, a podcast for women with a big heart on a spiritual journey. Each week join Cindy MacMillan as she interviews coaches, spiritual explorers, and celebrants from all walks of life about beginnings, endings, and the messy bits in-between. Self-love, well-being, and mindset are at the heart of our conversations because once you change the inside, the outside will begin to change as well. Cindy: (00:40) Hey friends, Welcome back to Exploring the Seasons of Life podcast. Thank you and I appreciate you for listening today as my friend Debra Healey turns the table on me and asks me questions. Cindy: (00:52) Debra is a nurse leader with a background in Home Health, Hospice and Hospital administration. She has a special interest in Patient safety and helping healthcare professionals handle stress. She holds several certifications in safety and stress management and currently works as a Nurse Consultant providing education that helps healthcare organization achieve a safe environment for patients while helping the healthcare staff handle the stress of patient care. Cindy: (01:23) Deb, thank you for interviewing me today. This is going to be a lot of fun. Debra Healey: (01:28) Yes, it sure is going to be fun, Cindy, turning the tables on you. So, Cindy, what does exploring the seasons of life mean to you in regard to your podcast? Cindy: (01:40) Deb, thank you for asking me that because I love that question. “What does Exploring the Seasons of Life mean to you” because I get a vast array of answers that are personal to my guests. Some of my guests have mentioned the Maiden/Mother/Crone. The Maiden is all about enchantment and new beginnings, youthful ideas and enthusiasm. The Mother is the next phase in a woman's life. She is fertility, abundance and growth, the gaining of knowledge. She is fulfillment—sexual, social, and emotional—and she is represented by the full moon. The Crone aspect is the final stage. She is the hag and the wise woman, the darkness of night, and eventually death. Cindy: (02:28) Some of my guests have talked about the seasons themselves: Spring is the season of new beginnings and a time when we feel energized to experience life in so many ways. In summer, we needn’t hide, hibernate, or bundle up. Life is an open book, with adventures waiting around every corner. Autumn is a time to be thankful for what we have experienced throughout the year and begin to wind down and prepare for next year. Winter is a time to analyze your actions. Think of the year that has passed. Understand what you have achieved and what you need to think about in the coming New Year. Cindy: (03:58) I was thinking of all those different aspects but for me Exploring the Seasons of Life means…let’s explore where you are right now because there is a cycle to everything and there are many seasons within the course of a lifetime. Deb, it has taken me a lifetime to really understand that. Maybe we are graduating college or getting married and having babies, maybe we are grieving and trying to make meaning after loss, maybe we have been cheated on or maybe we are the cheater, maybe we are an empty nester, maybe we are in the throes of a devastating illness, maybe we are lonely, maybe we are in the messy bits of divorce, maybe we are retired and wondering what’s next, maybe we and honestly the list can go on. Cindy: (04:24) No season is perfect, but when we embrace every season of our lives fully, and stop resisting, we become more alive. Henry David Thoreau said, “Live each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influences of each.” And I love that because it reminds me that there is beauty and learning in every season regardless of which one we are in. Debra Healey: (04:25) Cindy, that was a beautiful answer. And I have listened to every single one of your podcasts. And what I love most about them is how authentic you are and the authenticity that you bring out in each one of your guests. And I think you've just beautifully explained to us the seasons of life and those messy bits in between that, you know, each and every one of us, in this human experience, uh, have experienced all those happy times and sad times. And I think exploring those seasons and really living within each season is what your podcasts bring and what they mean to me. Cindy: (05:10) Oh, thank you, Deb. Thanks so much. Debra Healey: (05:12) So should we move on to inspiration? Cindy, what inspired you to make this podcast in the first place? Cindy: (05:22) This is a really interesting question for me. So, Deb, it was somewhere around the 2008/2009 time frame I was in a Training Program and at the end we were to visualize our future and what we wanted to create. For me it was a center of learning where people came together for personal growth + social change. It would feature leaders and teachers from around the world. The economy crashed and that is another season of my life for another time but in a nutshell, I was laid off and started commuting 1.5 hours each way to the only job I could find. I stumbled on this thing called podcasts. I thought well instead of a physical location I can do a podcast…let me learn how to do that. So it has been a journey of learning how to do a podcast and now having my first 15 out. So that was what inspired me to start the show as well as obviously going through all the different seasons in my own life. Debra Healey: (06:39) Right. And I know we've sure had some great talks about that. Cindy: (06:43) Yes we have. Debra Healey: (06:45) So, you know, now that you have started your podcast, can you give us a quick overview of what you expect your listeners will get out of the podcast that you're putting out there? Cindy: (06:57) Yes, absolutely. I really narrowed this down and I've kind of struggled because when you listen to all the experts out there, they tell you to niche down. So I have had a problem niching down, loving all kinds of different learning, but I, I have gotten to the point where I really feel like the show is for women with a big heart on a spiritual journey because I'm interviewing coaches and spiritual explorers and celebrants from all walks of life about beginnings endings and the messy bits. I really want the show to focus on self-love, well-being, and mindset, because I really and truly do feel that once we change the inside and the way we perceive life, that's when the outside changes as well. Debra Healey: (07:47) Right. And you've shared a lot of that with me, you know, as we've become friends over the years of how, you know, you changed the inside and your outside changed and also your whole, your whole life really changed. So, you know, from my perspective, you bring that to your listeners and that part about niching down. You know, I think those seasons of life, like we say, Oh, we want to work with 40 year olds or 50 year olds, but we're all in those seasons of life, no matter what our ages and all those messy bits oh boy they're in every season. Cindy: (08:25) Yes they are. Debra Healey: (08:28) So I'm moving on to another question. Let's see. What have you learned from starting these podcasts? Cindy: (08:36) Deb, I have learned so many things. The podcast is truly a labor of love for me. Cindy: (08:43) 1. That I really enjoy the creative process of producing a podcast and that when people who were already podcasting said it is more work than you think, believe them. You will need to be dedicated to continually be putting out new episodes. 2. The power of yes: Deb, the women who said yes to me, who raised their hand, in the very beginning of my podcasting journey showed me that saying yes is truly a leap of faith. The majority of the first 15 women I interviewed did not know me at all. It reminds of the book Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand In the Sun and Be Your Own Person - by Shonda Rhimes. Have you read that one? Debra Healey: (09:36) No, I haven't. Cindy: (09:37) I recommend that. Debra Healey: (09:39) Oh, I will read it. Cindy: (09:41) So, yes, the power of, yes. Cindy: (09:44) The third thing I've learned is: The power of no: I have asked women to be a guest on the show who said no. I learned not to take it personally because that was a perfect example of self-love. If it wasn’t the right time for them it wasn’t the right time for them. Period. Debra Healey: (10:02) Yes. And I know you talk a lot about self-love and acceptance, so that's a really important feature. And I think in every one of your podcasts that I have listened to, there's a common thread of a message of how important it is for us to look at ourselves and see ourselves as others see us. I remember one time we talked about how, um, we can be our own best friend talked a lot about that one time. And I think that that is a common thread that comes through in every one of your guests that you bring out in that guest is, is the power of self-love and how it is okay to put yourself first and maybe sometimes say, no. Cindy: (10:44) So that's number three. Was that power of no, four, okay, Deb, I get to talk to amazing women. They, you know, I'm learning from them. I stay in this positive place, you know, after talking to them and listening to their stories. And sometimes, you know, the things that they say to me might be something that I've never heard of, or I've never thought of. So I'm looking at things in a total different way. That's one of the things I am enjoying so much is getting to talk to amazing women like you. Debra Healey: (11:19) Well, thanks, Cindy. Debra Healey: (11:23) This has been a lot of fun. I've learned a lot more that I thought I knew everything about you developing these podcasts, but I certainly have learned a lot more of why this is your heart's desire. And you know, I'm really proud of you because I've, um, really watched you grow from something that was an idea while you were driving to a new job to, you know, having really 16 podcasts already completed and put out for people to listen to. I put them all on my Facebook page. Um, you know, every, every time I listen and, you know, for any of your listeners, I would, I would encourage them to do the same because the messages are so important to especially women right now in the times that we're in. Cindy: (12:11) Thank you, Deb. I appreciate that so much now. And I do want to mention one other thing that I've learned because it was it was actually; it was a tough one and I had to sit with it for quite a while. And that is, you mentioned that you've listened to the podcast. And I so appreciate that. I have friends that I would send the podcast to who just dismissed it. They didn't even listen. It was nothing to them. And I was really feeling hurt because I thought, Oh, that's my friends. They know how important this to me. Why wouldn't they support me by just listening and giving me feedback? I love that feedback that you give me whenever you listen to a podcast. And what I really had to learn was that it's okay. My podcast and my friendships are separate. They do not have to commingle and that it's not for me to judge what they listen to. And that was a really big learning piece for me. But once I got that piece it set me free. Debra Healey: (13:21) Right. Well, what you're just mentioning to me is all of that about self-acceptance. And I think you and I have talked about the book, The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Toltec Wisdom Book), which, you know, The Second Agreement: Don’t Take Anything Personally is one of them, you know, because it's usually not about you, it's about them. And you know, also sometimes there's a lot of, I guess I would use the word fear that they, you know, the, you don't, you're not ready for that information. Right. And also accepting where another person is coming from. Because, you know, in these times that we're in where we're so divisive in the world right now, I think where we can be kind and more gentle and accepting that not everyone has the same, opinions or, you know, the same, life or interest. And that's okay. That's what makes us great as human beings. Cindy: (14:20) Absolutely. So those are the, really the five things that I can say that I've learned that like really made such an, an impact on me. And I want to bring those through in future podcast, because I think those were great learning experiences. Debra Healey: (14:36) Yes. And I know you have some future podcasts plan that are going to be exciting. Cindy: (14:42) Yes I do. Thank you. Oh, all right, Deb. Well, I think this has been fun. Have you thought this been fun? Debra Healey: (14:52) Yes. I think this has been a lot of fun. And I do have a last question for you because it's the question that you ask all of your guests. So I think it'd be fun to hear what your answer is. And maybe I could give a little bit of an answer too. So Cindy, if you could turn back time and tell your 18 year old self, what would you tell her about you in this season of life that you're currently in. Cindy: (15:21) Now, I know how my guests feel when I ask that. Okay, If I could go back and talk to 18-year-old, Cindy, I would tell her everything's going to be okay. You think that the season you're going in right now is going to last forever, but it's not. You are going to have so many experiences. You're going to do things that right now at 18 you cannot even imagine that you will do; at 18 you cannot imagine what you will do. I would tell her, keep your love of learning that's going to serve you well in your years to come. Be kind and keep loving your family. Yeah, that's what I would tell her. Debra Healey: (16:08) Well, I think that's a beautiful answer. And I did think about a little bit about that myself. Do you mind if tell you a little bit about that? Cindy: (16:16) I would love to hear it. Debra Healey: (16:17) My 18 year old self, because you know, when you talk about the seasons of life, I am in my mid-sixties. So I don't even like that word crone, but I love the season. I love the season of life that I'm in right now. And it's one of my happiest seasons ever in my life. So looking back, I would say I've gained wisdom about all my life events. I look back on them and I would tell even my 20, 30, and 40-year-old self, not to worry so much. Don't worry because the happy parts and the sad parts, it's all going to be part of what we'll look back on what I look back on now that has brought me to my present moment. Debra Healey: (17:08) And so in the season that I'm of life that I'm in now, I look towards a grateful mindset. I'm grateful for everything that I've experienced in my life and the wisdom that I've gained to just be, and to take each day as they come and be grateful. I know that sounds a little bit corny, but it is, you know, that when you look back on everything that happened to you looking back on it, I mean, when you're in the middle of the messy bits, you don't know, you don't know how things are going to turn out, but when you look back is when you can say, Oh yeah, I understand that now. So that's what I would tell my 18, 20, 30, and 40-year-old self is don't worry. It's going to be okay. Cindy: (17:57) Deb, I love that because yes, when we're 18, like you said, 20, 30, 40, whatever that worrying about what's going to happen is in hindsight, you know, it's not worth it. Debra Healey: (18:11) That's right. And you know, we've talked about, I'm very interested in finding balance in life and stress and especially helping people to, deal with the everyday bumps that, you know, we all experience. And if you can just, take that deep breath and say everything is happening exactly the way it's supposed to unfold and for my greatest good, which is pretty hard to do in a lot of, you know, intense moments. But if you can achieve that, it does help you get through those messy bits to see the sunshine that's on the other side. Cindy: (18:49) Oh, thanks, Deb. I think this is a perfect place to end. I appreciate you from the bottom of my heart, coming on the podcast and interviewing me Debra Healey: (18:58) And I appreciate giving me the opportunity to interview you. It's been an honor. Cindy: (19:03) All right. Thank you. Cindy: (19:05) Thank you for listening to this week's episode of Exploring the Seasons of Life. I had fun being on the other side of the microphone so to speak and hope you enjoyed this episode of finding out what was behind my desire to start a podcast. I loved the questions Deb asked me and really appreciate her being on the podcast. I do plan on having different friends interview me from time to time…it’s just a fun way for me to tell my story. . Hello! It’s just me today, and I want to go through what I’m currently doing in my life to do some ENERGY MANAGEMENT and what other people are doing.I’ve talked about this before, and I’m reading a great book on the subject, The Patriarchy Stress Disorder, but we as women are PREDISPOSED to be apologetic, to be codependent, to minimize ourselves, to oppress ourselves, and TO GIVE to others. It’s just part of who we are.If you’ve been listening to the podcast long enough, you know that when we are giving too much, when we’re too accommodating, we can stop managing our energy and become the “baby in the backseat.” Which is about 20% of the time. And that’s a lot of the time. So, what do we do? So, where in our lives, do we need to PROTECT our energy? And how do we do it?Number one, we need to BE ACCEPTING of people for who they are. How much time and energy do you waste on trying to change somebody or being irritated that that person who is not like you? We want people to accept us for who we are, but then who are we to judge them for who they are?All right, number two, FORGIVE people. Just forgive people. Do you know the amount of energy that it takes not to forgive someone? It is so not worth it. Judgment takes up space. Acceptance does not. Resentment takes up space. Forgiveness does not. And if someone apologizes to you, like take their apology.Okay, number three. LET THAT SHIT GO. Let that shit go. Anytime you’re holding on to stuff, it’s a waste of energy. And so sometimes you may need to make a conscious decision, “What can I let go?”Number four is DON’T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY, which is from The Four Agreements. Most of the time, it has nothing to do with you. Everybody’s dealing with their own shit and someone’s reaction to you likely has nothing to do with you.Alright, those are the heavy lifters when it comes to energy management, but let’s get real. How many of you are on Facebook or Instagram way, way, way, way, way, way more than you need to be? Hands all over the country, all over the world for that matter, are going up right now because we are almost all guilty of this, and it is an energy management KILLER.When we get on social media, and let’s be honest, what’s the first thing we do? We COMPARE ourselves to other people. “Oh my God, that person’s hair looks amazing. Or, wow, her butt is so on-point. Oh, her marriage is perfect. Oh my God, her business is killing it. Oh, she is traveling all over.”“Oh, she must be a millionaire. Oh, she must not have any problems. Oh, look how clean her house is. Oh, LOOK AT ALL THE THINGS… I am a fucking loser…”One of the biggest energy management tools is to TURN YOUR DAMN PHONE OFF. I need to turn it off because otherwise, I’m that person. I’m always clicking it, touching it, looking at it, all the things. So, I turn my phone off for multiple hours a day.How many of you have NOTIFICATIONS for every godforsaken app on your phone? Hands again, all over the country and the world going up… Turn that shit off because you’re reactive and when that ping goes off, we break whatever concentration we are in to go to our phone. And it takes like 20 minutes for us to get back to whatever task that we were doing, no matter the task. Try it for a month, a week, a day. Turn that off and BE PROACTIVE about when you’re going into your apps. PROTECT YOUR ENERGY.And that then that leads us to set some BOUNDARIES. I’m not gonna lie, I have gotten away from this a little bit lately. I have a problem with boundaries. I over-give and this just teaches others by responding to them that this is acceptable, and it’s not.Okay, next on the list… CODEPENDENCY. When are you jumping on the other side of the net, and where are you letting other people jump on your side of the net? It’s such a humongous topic, and I promise I will talk about it in upcoming episodes. Basically, what is your business and what is not your business? What are you spending energy on that is none of your fucking business. The last thing I cover today is COMPARTMENTALIZATION. I’ve done podcasts about this. There are videos in the Squad about this, but compartmentalization is being as FOCUSED as possible, one hundred percent doing one thing at a time.Being with your partner, eating a meal, being on your phone. Listening to a podcast, self-care, watching TV, going for a walk, playing with your kids, doing work, right? As women, we have a lot of compartments. When we are multitasking, when we are trying to manage and control things, we are all over the place. Making sure as much as possible that you are compartmentalized in the thing that you are doing is one of the number one energy management tools.I hope that you will take the time to listen to this episode and to try some energy management, it is such a key piece to getting the most out of every day, every relationship, everything.Join The Squad and ask me some questions. In today's episode, Jessica and I talk about the idea of how important our word is to the world and to ourselves. We discuss the book "The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Toltec Wisdom Book)" by Don Miguel Ruiz and begin the next several podcasts on Ruiz's Toltec Wisdom guides to finding peace and happiness in life. The First Agreement, which is to be impeccable with your word, not only involves how we talk to other people in our lives, whether that be friends, family, our kids, etc. It also deals with how we talk to ourselves. I highly recommend this book, especially if you are on your own personal journey to learning more about your self, or trying to help others on their own self-help discoveries. Hopefully you can pull some wisdom from our conversation in this episode to help you on your own health and wellness goals. Ruiz's book can be found on Amazon, along with several other books he has written on self-help and self-discovery through Toltec wisdom. Brian Cunningham, CEO of Wahiawa General Hospital and author of The Leadership Revolution, joins the show this week. Brian shares the story of his fascinating background from working as a parking lot attendant at a hospital, to gaining a position in leadership, all with the mission to serve as many people as possible. Brian talks about what life is like in Hawaii, how he works to create a culture where everyone in the organization is clear on values, and how the quality of service is everything when working in the healthcare industry.   Key Takeaways [5:46] Great leaders know what the right thing to do is, intellectually but they also follow through with it in times of frustration and crisis. [7:33] Brian witnessed how the healthcare industry is one where emotions are magnified and he realized how important it was to infuse service and care with every interaction. He started as a parking attendant and worked his way up until he was pulled into a leadership role. [8:46] No matter what role he is in, Brian is always focused on the goal of serving as many people as he can. [13:30] Quality of service is the number one priority for Brian and his team at Wahiawa General Hospital. They get clear about what they need to do and then do it the best they can. They delegate things they know they can’t be exemplary at and do not try to be all things to all people. [15:40] Brian is committed to always be growing and embrace new experiences and adventure. His move to Hawaii has worked out very well and loves serving the people on the island. [17:43] Brian wrote The Leadership Revolution as he explored his own self and saw how internal exploration started to mirror the possibilities of leadership. He started to look at the reality of the environment he was in and built a body of knowledge that could help other leaders grow and to contribute to the dialogue from a reality-based perspective. [31:17] To create a sustainable culture of leadership, the elements of both being and doing must be clear. Leaders must clarify the purpose of the organization and make sure everyone understands the fundamentals of how to demonstrate it daily. [33:08] Brian explains the difference between challenging and marginalizing, and the importance of giving constructive criticism.   Resources: Purchase Bring Your Whole Self to Work and gain access to bonus material Mike Robbins Website Mike Robbins Podcast Mike Robbins on Facebook Mike Robbins on Twitter Mike Robbins on Instagram The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Toltec Wisdom Book), by Don Miguel Ruiz The Leadership Revolution: Because Evolution Takes Too Long, by Brian Cunningham Awareness Quotient Leadership

Tracy Crossley is a Master Intuitive Coach and Mentor whose work centers on emotional connection. She helps people get out of their head to uncover the belief system that drives their behavior, then guides them through emotionally-driven actions to break the patterns that keep them stuck. As someone who struggled with insecure attachment issues for most of her life, Tracy shares her experiences with equal parts empathy and humor. She’s been there, and knows how much is available to those who refuse to settle. The work she does leads to self-acceptance and a more authentic life. Tracy, take a minute and let us know if there is anything we missed in that intro & give us a glimpse into how you started doing the amazing work you do. Guiding Principle, Quote or Mantra Transparent communication is key so nothing gets stuck under the rug.  When You Tripped Up Tracy spent many years not taking responsibility for her role in her relationship.  Then one day she was walking down the street and it slapped her upside the head and said “Hey, you’re the problem. Until you get this emotionally figured out, you’re not going anywhere.” The “DUH” moment that changed your partnerships forever When Tracy started speaking her truth it changed a lot. She gave herself license to express herself no matter what he said or did.  She didn’t say things to get a specific outcome, which is how most people speak. She was speaking because she knew that if she didn’t express these things she was letting herself down. This is one of the way she developed value. Proudest moment in partnership Recently Tracy’s partner said to her “You know I unconditionally love myself.” And because we are mirrors for each other she realized that says a lot about where she’s at too. What are emotionally driven actions? This is being vulnerable where it’s not safe. You have to have safety within yourself to do this. So fascinating. Check this out. Have you ever reached the point of not being able to keep your feelings in any longer? Did you fear you would be judged if you were to speak up? How to do honor who you are, be authentic with your voice and yet respect those who have a different opinion? Host, Mike Domitrz welcomes CAST members Barry Moniak, Darren Tipton, and Berni Xiong to discuss the important differences between speaking out and speaking up, how we can say our truths without negative energy and the benefits of being consistent.   The quote that inspired this conversation is: “Bravery, the courage to be — to live in the world without any deception and with tremendous kindness and caring for others. Bravery begins to heighten your existence.” from Shambhala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior, by Chögyam Trungpa.   Subscribe to the Everyday Mindfulness Show.   Key Takeaways:   [1:08] Mike reads the quote and asks ‘how do we speak out against harm without doing harm?’ [6:03] Bernie encourages her community to speak up. Jan and Monika Zands open today’s session of Mindset Academy following the theme of this month, which is exploring the agreements set by Don Miguel Ruiz in his book The Four Agreements. Today, the third agreement will be discussed which is “Don’t make assumptions.” But let’s start from the beginning: “What even is an assumption?” It is information we use to fill a gap. We are trained to do this and we often believe that the assumptions we made on the missing information are the reality. When we receive feedback from others, we can also assume it is our reality, but what others see really belongs to their own belief system and experiences. We have to question our perspectives and realities in order to recognize the assumptions that we are making. There is a set of action steps: 1. Become aware, 2. learn how to make fewer assumptions, and 3. realize where are those assumptions are coming from. Assumptions can get us into trouble, but we can make agreements with others, explaining what we mean, clarifying our intentions, and listening to other´s intentions as well. We often make assumptions: - That people understand what we want and how we feel, - About what we believe is possible, - About what we can and can’t do. On one side there is what really happened, and then an interpretation of what happened. The way to resolve is to ask questions and to clarify. Forgive yourself for judging yourself, and move forward trying to become aware of the assumptions you have made about yourself and others. There will be times where we never know the truth, and we can fill those gaps with the information we choose, make an assumption where you are winning; you get to create your reality from a positive and loving perspective. See your greatness, be your greatness, and pay it forward!   In This Episode You Will Learn: Consider/Ask Yourself: - Become aware of assumptions and the cost they have in your life. - Realize when you and others make assumptions. - Where are the assumptions coming from? - How have assumptions been running your life?   Resources: The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Toltec Wisdom Book), by Don Miguel Ruiz

Monika and Jan Zands welcome you to Mindset Academy, a space thought to help you have the best possible mind, soul, spirit, and body relationship in order to live the life of your dreams. This month, the book The Four Agreements is being discussed. Today, the second agreement is where the focus is: “Do Not Take Things Personally.” We usually take things personally because somewhat we think we are special and what’s happening around us is directly related to us. We carry this “backpack” of beliefs and thoughts that we assumed belong to us. Jan divides this concept in two: Taking personally what people do or taking personally what people say. We usually make assumptions, giving reasons why people are saying or doing what they do and how that has to do with us personally. How can we change this? We can create alternate perspectives, we can dive into why we felt touched and affected by this situation by discovering our own view about ourselves. You know that you are taking things personally when there is a discomfort involved. Reflect into what hurts to find out what are your beliefs about yourself that are rising. Ask yourself: What if I am not the way I show myself to be? If you can really see what you are hiding from yourself, then you can really be free and stop taking things personally. See your greatness, be your greatness, and pay it forward!   Consider/Ask Yourself: Practice: Think about one time you have taken things personally and that created upset — where the hurt comes from; how that talks about you and what you think about yourself.   Resources: The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Toltec Wisdom Book), by Don Miguel Ruiz

During his time at Sagicor, Mr. Edwards also created, ran and marketed his High Street Clothing brand. An experienced performer and lover of nature, Mr. Edwards is also a proponent and practitioner of meditation and diverse self-improvement practices.   Question   Tell us a little bit about yourself and your journey In terms of customer experience, how has that been for you since you started business and what is your view on customer experience as a business owner? What are some of the challenges you believe young men face why it is that you are compelled in this business? Do you think it’s because of our culture why you think the men are challenged in such a way, outside of the parenting aspect predominantly being exposed to female influence, does the Caribbean culture impact that as well? Can you tell us a little bit about why you think image is so important and how does that impact customer service? Getting somebody to attire themselves in a particular way and have a particular image, how long those that take and is it just the physical or is it like a mind set change as well in terms of how they feel about themselves? Who are some of the role models you would use to drive inspiration in the persons you’re trying to transform? How do you stay motivated every day? Do you think it’s important as a businessperson to really be passionate about what you’re doing in order to be successful? What is the one online resource, website, tool or app that you absolutely cannot live without in your business? What are some of the books that have had the biggest impact on you? If you where sitting across the table from another business owner and they said to you that they feel they have great products and services but they lack the constantly motivated human capital, what’s the one piece of advice would you give them to have a successful business, specifically as it relates to constantly motivated human capital? What is one thing in your life right now that you are really excited about – something that you are working on to develop yourself or people? Where can our listeners find your information online? What is one quote or saying that you live by or that inspires you in times of adversity?     Highlights   Daniel Edwards shared he is a Financial Advisor, he sells primarily insurance and investment products with Caribbean Assurance Brokers but he’s very passionate about his new venture which is Total One-Eighty Image Consulting and he feels that it is an initiative that is very necessary right now in Jamaica where men are really falling behind in a number of areas, he feels compelled to push this mission to reinvigorate the males.   Daniel Edwards shared that he always believes in under promising and over delivering, he tries to extend that to his venture and that’s what it is about and focusing more about being of service and adding value than about money because if you do that first, then the money will follow. . Daniel Edwards stated that a significant percentage of males in Jamaica today are raised without fathers and as a result, there are a lot of men being raised by women so they don’t get those little extra tips and instructions that a man should give another man. The daughters are okay because their mothers can teach them how to dress and how to put themselves together as women but they fall short with the men. Such example include seeing men attending a graduation in sneakers or going to a job interview like they are going to a dance, they don’t have a male figure to show them how to really put themselves together.   Daniel shared that he doesn’t think that our culture had an impact on the way our Jamaican men dress. He stated that our parents’ generational practices that but it’s a recent departure.   Daniel Edwards stated that it’s not just about the image, it’s about the image plus communication skills but everything begins with the visual and our impressions are formed within seconds of seeing someone and often times these impressions are set in stones within seconds and barring you doing something exceptional, they don’t change. So the first impression is the only one that matters but beyond that we have to have the communication skills and the service to solidify that reputation and really give the client a great experience. So they have to be all rounders, they have to have the look and the package.   Daniel shared that his ultimate goal is to have a holistic approach but you have to start somewhere, so he started off by creating a workshop on dressing for success. In this workshop, they look at the psychology of the first impression, the psychology of color, they look at how suits should fit, the power of a suit, the psychology behind wearing a suit, how you think different and feel different wearing one and people treat you differently. They go into accessories, they show you what colors to wear as in suits, what suits to wear and not to wear, accessories because male fashion is all about details. He stated that he wants to get into other areas such as public speaking and all of the components that are required to make you successful and make a bold impact when you step into a room.   Daniel Edwards stated that for inspiration, Steve Harvey is a good example, also P. Diddy and Michael Lee Chin. He stated that he’s a fan of all of the self made black Millionaires.   Yanique added that you want them to connect with someone who looks like them so that they can see that this possibility exists.   Daniel Edwards shared that by staying motivated, he uses "Operant Conditioning", he stated that we all do things to gain pleasure or avoid pain, so operant conditioning is where you try to avoid pain and pain for him would be living a life of judgery, getting old, getting sick and then dying. Operant conditioning is a type of learning where behavior is controlled by consequences. Key concepts in operant conditioning are positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment and negative punishment. He wants to live a purpose driven life on his terms and have an amazing life, and he can only do that by running his enterprise and perusing his dreams and his passions.   Daniel stated that he doesn’t know anybody who is hugely successful whose purpose isn’t aligned with their passion, those are prerequisites. There are millions  of businesses ventures out there that can garner money but every entrepreneurial enterprise requires grit and determination and preservation in the early years to turn a profit, so if it’s just about making money, they are not going to put in those extra hours and deal with all those disappointments and the failures and near misses unless you are passionate about it.   Daniel stated that he likes Pinterest a lot as well as Instagram but he doesn’t think that there’s anything he could live without, as he’ll find a way regardless. He stated that they are extremely helpful for example if he’s doing a wedding for someone, as he does weddings on what to wear, he can go on Pinterest and get an outfit together, he has an internet platter of ideas he can find.   Daniel stated that he is an avid reader and believes you should try to read a new book every month, the last book that really made a big impact on him was “The Way of the Superior Man: A Spiritual Guide to Mastering the Challenges of Women, Work, and Sexual Desires by David Deida” it talks about how men should deal with women, it’s about the masculine and feminine and how they should dance together and not wrestle. He also mention “The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Toltec Wisdom Book) by Don Miguel Ruiz”, Toltec were like the ancient Indians in Mexico. Daniel mentioned one more book called, “Triggers: Creating Behavior That Lasts – Becoming the Person You Want to Be by Marshall Goldsmith”, he is a high level Psychologist and he is a trainer for CEOs, he’ll go into Forbes and train the CEO, he’s showing that a lot of our behavior that is inexplicable or destructive is really based on triggers to prior events, so when similar situations occurs, it triggers it. Once you’re able to decipher what these triggers are then you can make permanent changes in your life without being confused or beating yourself up wondering why this happen.   Daniel shared that the advice he would give another business owner is that you must incentivize your workers, they need to feel like they have a vested interest and they need to know if they put in a little more effort, they can dictate their paycheck. If the guy comes in and he’s getting a flat salary, he’s very aware that he’s building your empire for you, why is he going to stay there for 12 hours or why is he going to go above and beyond, as soon as 5:00 pm comes he wants to go home, that’s it, he’ out. They have to feel that they have a vested interest and that they are apart of the enterprise, they need to know that they put in a little extra, they will get some money.     Yanique asked Daniel if he believes that most or all employees based on his experience are motivated financially, does motivation comes from something else as well?   Daniel Edwards shared that it is a combination; feeling like you have a vested interest doesn’t necessarily only translate to more money. Apart of the business, you’re invaluable and that your input will leave an indelible mark in the company. And if you have a system where your staff is rewarded base on merit, then they will work a little harder too, so one person is a superstar and one person is just slumming it and everybody is getting the same paycheck, after awhile the guy who is the superstar is going to take it down a few notches because there is no incentive for working so hard. There’s a motivational speaker called Max Moyan who said, “If you’re doing just enough not to loose your job, your boss is going to pay you just enough to keep it.” Also, empower your employees, put them on a plan immediately, and create a situation where they are aware of this is where they are beginning but 5 years where they should be, you should be empowering them to be on a trajectory towards success and you get a next set, it’s not a static situation.   Daniel shared that what’s exciting for him right now is the business blossoming, he did the Caribbean Speakers International recently and it was a mind blowing experience because he has never done something like that before. He has done talks before but he has never spoken without a script so he felt like he grew 5 years in one day.   Daniel shared that listeners can find him at - totaloneeighty - Instagram Total One Eighty Image Consulting - Facebook Total one Eighty - Twitter   Daniel shared that he had some slumpy years in his career so now that things have turned around for him, when he’s about to make major steps, he resorts to the bad memories and then he starts to have the limiting self talks where he says, “Three years ago this wasn’t working, what makes you think this is going to work now?” Les Brown who is one of has one of favorites quotes, “Operate using your imagination not your memory.” Once you go back to your failures, it’s crippling to you.   Links   The Way of the Superior Man: A Spiritual Guide to Mastering the Challenges of Women, Work, and Sexual Desires by David Deida The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Toltec Wisdom Book by Don Miguel Ruiz Triggers: Creating Behaviors That Lasts – Becoming the Person You Want to Be by Marshall Goldsmith

Speaking of Partnership: Personal Stories of the Power and Payoffs of Partnership

Judith Costa is a certified Unconditional Love Coach, Seminar Leader, Writer and Speaker, with a Master in Psychology and Psychotherapy and an MBA. She works with groups and individuals, both online and in person, to help them overcome their blocks to Love, and to know themselves better. She uses different techniques such as Coaching, Past Life Regression Therapy, The Akashic Records, Astrology and Dream Interpretation. Judith’s work involves teachings about how to improve Self-Love and how to manifest the kind of relationship all of us want and deserve. She offers one day workshops and retreats around the world. Guiding Principle, Quote or Mantra A soul-mate partnership is not about what you get, it is about what you are giving. This love is a flow of giving and receiving. Giving from a place of something you already have to create something new. Sometimes the complaints you have in a relationship are the things that you don’t bring to the table. And then we tend to blame our partner for it. When You Tripped Up The biggest trip up for Judith was when she abandoned herself in her first marriage. She didn’t know how to love herself, and the partnership was not working. Judith learned that you cannot sacrifice yourself in a relationship. You have to “be” there. She was too worried looking at the past and too anxious looking at the future to be present and in the flow. You have to be there for you and be your best friend no matter what. Then you can establish relationships that have less drama and less need for control. What is past-life regression and how can it impact our partnerships? Past-life regression is a guided meditation that takes you experiences you had in past-lives so you can learn from them. This can be very important when are in a relationship that’s not working. When you have an instant reaction of attraction or dislike to someone, it is often because you have some unfinished business from past lives. The goal of this work is to heal the energy that keeps you stuck in a past moment in time. Proudest moment in partnership Judith used to have a studio of interior design with her mother. And she learned a lot from her. There was a moment where she could put her ego aside and recognize how valuable everything was that she was receiving from this partnership. Even though they were very different and did not agree on lots of things, this relationship taught Judith how to run her own business now. What is the best partnership / relationship advice you have ever received? Bring to the table everything you have. Be 100% engaged with all your attention and passion and energy. The only thing you have to DO to make a partnership work is be authentically you. Many times we have a persona or mask or role that we use to go through life. This happens when we don’t accept ourselves first and secondly we are afraid of being rejected. I'm your host, Lisa Cummings, and I've gotta tell ya, whether you're leading a team or leading yourself, it's hard to find something more energizing and productive than using your natural talents every day at work. Today, in this episode, we are going to talk about how strengths apply to conflict at work, and how you can apply strengths to gratitude on your team, and why that's important. Your guest today is the founder of a company, Tribal Performance. I left last week, doing several events in New York City, and at those events a bunch of participants said they wished they had more Self-Assurance and more Command, so those are two specific talent themes people were wanting for. Your guest has both of those in her top 10 talents. Even though I always tell participants, "spend your energy working with what you've got instead of worrying about what other people have - you can always get your outcomes through the talents you have," I figure you would still find it very fascinating to know that your guest has both of those talents. Shhhh. Even though she has them she's still totally terrified of snakes. As a gardener, this can be a scary thing, so even if you lead through Command and Self-Assurance, it doesn't make you bulletproof. Besides being super unique, and out there with these unique talents, she's also top notch in strengths-based development. She focuses on delivering StrengthsFinder coaching, performance coaching, and training like I do. She's also planning an epic Airstream RV adventure and has some really awesome communication course content that will dribble into our conversation today. All kinds of great stuff. With that, Lexy Thompson, welcome to the show. Lexy Thompson: Thanks Lisa. Happy to be here. Lisa Cummings: Let's dive right in. I mentioned conflict, and this is one of those items that is tough for teams to master. I'd be curious what your number one thing is that you think creates unproductive conflict in the workplace. Lexy Thompson: Number one I would say is the avoidance of it, the fear of it, the almost aversion to it. Once we can get past that, we can figure out how to actually lean into it. The funny part about this is at the executive level this seems to be the one competency that sets everybody apart. The best of the best at the senior levels are able to manage this day in and day out with some grace and kindness and high level of accountability. You and I do our work at that mid-level management often times, and that's often a really good space for them to start trying to get comfortable with what's uncomfortable for them. Lisa Cummings: I think that's really smart because a lot of people listening are people managers and they want to be in executive roles and I could absolutely agree that that does seem to be a distinguishing factor, someone able to go in and really work in those situations confidently. There are also a lot of listeners who are individual contributors trying to be promoted into manager roles and that is about the number one complaint when I am working with people managers, and they say people have these conflicts on the team and they come into their office like tattle tales saying, "Oh, I'm having this issue with so-and-so ..." and are not addressing it head-on. If you want to be viewed as a high performer, as self-sufficient, as having high emotional intelligence, you start learning your ways of addressing that head-on in a mutually respectful way, in a way that builds trust, you're going to be looked upon as a great candidate, or at least that area of you will make you a much more viable candidate for a leadership position in general. What is the why that finally makes people see that this is important? Lexy Thompson: The self-awareness piece, the strengths journey for somebody, is really eye opening. Inside of that awareness, as much as they're willing to really enter in and do some work, the confidence just builds because you start to ... The wiring's there, you just haven't run down the road long enough to pave it. Once you've got that paved, your ability to run down and come back, you can do it within nanoseconds where it might have taken you minutes before. The more you do that the more confident you become, the stronger runner that you are and then you're willing to enter most races and give it a spin. Conflict really isn't much different than that; it's just knowing that you can take what you've learned here and see how you can apply it in a new situation. Lisa Cummings: If you're a manager, how do you know whether your team is functional or not? Let's start with how it looks. If you walk in a room and you see a functional team contrasted with a meeting with a dysfunctional team, what are the differences in how they appear? Lexy Thompson: There are actual body language cues. There are, like the way people sit, the way people walk in a room, the eye contact that you'll see in the meeting. Whenever I see teams talking to a person in the room but they're looking somewhere else, that tells me there's an avoidance of some type going on, whether it's conflict or self-confidence or whatever, there's something that isn't working amongst at least that two-person group, much less the whole group. Sometimes you walk in a meeting and you feel high-energy and you feel productivity and in other meetings, you'll walk in and you'll feel flat and kind of dull, and that's another cue too. Lisa Cummings: What do you do next? Say you're a manager, you've walked into a team, you're new to the company, you get the vibe of the 'something is wrong here' and you have to figure out how to put your finger on it. What are the steps that you take to start to unravel it and understand what the root of it is? Lexy Thompson: Firstly you check yourself. We all, every single one of us, bring our baggage with us when we go anywhere. What I found helpful when I was learning to be really proficient here was to see what was the story I brought into the scenario I was experiencing called conflict, or avoidance of conflict. Once I could check that, I could either say, "Okay, it is something that's outside of me that I'm going to need to engage with," or "It's a filter and a judgment that I just ran and I called it conflict but it really isn't, there's no data on the other side of this table or this room to help me validate that and I can check myself before I start diving in with someone else." That's the first part. That's the hardest part sometimes because it's called fatal attribution when we think that our faults are about the other person or environment but if it's someone else's faults, it's their character, so we really have to do that homework first. Lisa Cummings: I love that, when it's simplified down to the idea that you judge yourself by your intentions and you judge somebody else by their actions. It's easy to see the actions and say, "Oh, that's a character flaw," because you don't know the thing that's going in behind the scenes in the mind. I also think it's tough to know what you're assuming because you only know what's in your own head. How do you take people through that process? You've been checking yourself, how do you check in on assumptions and what's going on and probe into what's happening in a way that maintains the trust? Lexy Thompson: Probably the next step would be really owning your part of that, and making sure that you use language that shows the other person that you own your part of that. If you and I are in a room and I'm concerned about something in relationship to you, I would say it just like that, "Lisa, this is my story. This is what I'm experiencing. I'm not sure if I'm checking myself or do you feel something, a different version of this or any version of this where you are?" At that point the conversation will evolve and it will go where it needs to go and there may be avoidance on your part, maybe you don't see it or you're not ready. There's going to be a dialog there but at least when I open up and say, "I have something going on over here and I'd really like your help to discover what that is." You have to make sure your intention and your authenticity is just that because what I'll see new people when they're learning this do, is they'll use the language, but they really are just waiting to tell you what's wrong with you. That doesn't build trust because people sniff that out, right? Lisa Cummings: That's funny because the surface reaction is always to go back to the Stephen Covey concept of seek first to understand, and then to be understood and to actually genuinely do that. There's a little deeper level around subtext. That concept about you saying people can sniff that out, I think that's surprising to a lot of managers and I know it's surprising to a lot of people, I see it in my workshop. This just happened last week where someone when I asked them about when you're getting triggered and when you're at your worst, what does that look like? This woman said, "Well, I get really quiet and I kind of shut down, so maybe people would realize I'm not talking as much but I don't think they would know anything is wrong." Several teammates started laughing, and a guy said, "No, no, no you have this eyebrow thing," and he was just being really specific about, "I know exactly when something is wrong." She was totally surprised by all of this. I think people fool themselves into thinking that they can have a poker face, even the people who will beat their chests and say, "I don't bring my feelings into the workplace, it's just about the facts, ma'am." They're still going to show it. This kind of reminds me of your whole concept of a safe place for souls to show up and that you really can't hide how your soul needs to show up because it's there and no matter what words come out of your mouth, people will be able to tell if it's incongruent, or if it doesn't really sound like you feel like you, act like you, at your core. They'll know something's off, even if they can't name it. How do you go through that process to really even understand how you're showing up to you and to other people? Lexy Thompson: Yeah, so this is kind of where that beautiful 360 that everybody enjoys doing comes in. You actually do need mirrors in your life, whether it's a good friend who you trust with everything or it's a work mate that you've just met, really seeking feedback in a space where you're willing to take it in and then do something with it, process it, and that doesn't mean that everybody's feedback is equal and it doesn't mean everybody's feedback you have to wear like a shawl. Inside all of it there's some level of truth, because if you're resonating with one person like that, the odds are that there are more. The biggest ... The funny part, or the odd part of this is most people will say to me, "This happened today in a team meeting." They're learning each other's strengths. One person said something they needed around a belief that they have, and then another person said, "Yeah, now that I know you need that I know you need that ..." and she's like, "Well, are you going to give it to me?" She goes, "Well, I don't know. Why should I have to change how I approach it to meet your need?" There it was, right? There's that concern about having to change who I am, in order to be with you the way you need me to be. That's a really interesting paradigm for someone to venture into, and really have their own internal conversation around, "How can I hold my own authenticity, and still meet the need of someone else in a conversation so that they can hear what I'm saying, I can hear what they're saying, and we can receive each other as we need to in that space?" I have not experienced it. I won't say it never exists because just because I haven't experienced doesn't make it so. I have not experienced in the many, many negotiations and conflict mediations I've done, where someone couldn't show up in an authentic way, and meets someone's need and lost in that scenario. It doesn't mean it wasn't scary, it doesn't mean that it didn't take a lot of guts in some situations, but I've never, ever seen anyone lose. Lisa Cummings: Talk about authenticity at work, and what you see most often people being afraid to show. Lexy Thompson: Most people are not willing to show what they need. When we talk about strengths, going back to that topic, that whole precedence is that we have a needs and contribution piece to strengths. That conversation, when we have that and people are discovering and I'm sure, Lisa, you've had the same fun, amazing transformative times with your clients. When they're able to actually look across the table and do it in a really safe way. My Responsibility needs these things so that I can contribute in this way. When people can communicate that cleanly to each other, people are actually willing to meet the needs so the contribution can be realized. I think it gives them a way to access that that didn't exist before. Lisa Cummings: If one of the biggest obstacles in the way of people not showing up authentically, and they need to be able to express their needs, is one of the solutions for it, how do they really get to know their needs in the workplace? Lexy Thompson: You're right, strengths is one, and it's a really nice, clean way to at least start to explore the possibilities. There are lots of other good assessments, I think, out there. They're as good as we want them to be and master them to be. The journey that I took to get myself there was really, and this is going to sound interesting I think, but it took me six years to get to the place where that was really true for me, and it started with a class we took as a company, and we were supposed to write a paragraph about our mission statement in the world, our purpose kind of thing. Over time, I took another class and boiled it down to two sentences and then I got it down and down and down to the place where I can tell you that it's safe places for souls to show up. Every time that I choose to do anything in the world, personal or professional, if it can't meet that need, I don't do it. When I got that clear about my life, I was willing to show up and when you're willing to show up then you've got to take risks, right? You're not always going to be received in the way that you might like to, and certainly you won't be liked by everybody. That also, I would tell you, would also help people with that Self-confidence piece because it goes through that filter of your main purpose on this planet and everything else just falls to the wayside. Lisa Cummings: This is a great. I think a great pivot point to move into gratefulness as well, because we said we would talk about conflict and gratefulness at work. Some people I see receive this concept really open armed and I've worked with some companies that this has become just baked into their culture, and it's how they operate and they don't even have to think about it consciously. Other people have a reaction about, "Really? At work? This doesn't even sound like something that belongs in the office." Talk about that. Why gratitude? Lexy Thompson: I wish I could remember whose quote it was but I think you'll know it when I refer to it, but there's that thing that someone who's appreciated will fight the last battle with you and that their performance is better and their health is better and all of those good things. There's a lot of science around it. I do a keynote about Tribal Gratitude. I do think there's the personal gratitude. Every morning I'm up in my journal, and I do my stuff there and then at the end of the day I wrap up my day in gratitude, every day for many years. Then there was the, "Then what?" Beyond me, what do I do with that? We've been out exploring some of those things and reading some of the best stuff out there. The reality is when you start to extend it across to another human being, the emotional release in a really positive way is overwhelming. I think that might be the hesitation in the workplace, because for so long we didn't want to think feelings had a place. Even now, I'll hear hiring managers be like, "Oh, that's a feeling group. They cry at everything," or "They're upset at everything." The reality is we don't do much without an emotional jaunt to make us move one way or the other. If you can be in a space where you're expressing gratitude in an appropriate way in your work environment on a pretty regular basis but very sincere and very specific, that's the other part, then that person, those behaviors that that person is sharing with you, are getting anchored over and over again so you're getting more of that good stuff and by default you'll get less of the stuff you don't desire. It also makes it, you know there's that old adage, "You need money in the bank to make a withdrawal." Lisa Cummings: Yeah. Lexy Thompson: We're really clear about that too that there's going to be times where it isn't going to be all happy and it isn't going to be easy. If you've done this other really good work on the front side it doesn't have to be really, really hard either. Lisa Cummings: You're making me think back to a meeting when we were together a couple of months ago, and you suggested that we start off the meeting like that. I thought it was a really cool way that supports your point about understanding other people's needs, as well, and then getting more of, I call it, "Notice what works to get more of what works," because if you're noticing what's working about someone's contributions and then they see, "Oh, someone appreciated that. It's easy to deliver more of that,” because it's repeatable and then I noticed in the meeting where you asked us to kick off that way that the thing that resonated with each person was really different. The thing that the person decided to comment on, they were all over the map and it told me about each person. It told me about what they value. It told me about what they want the meetings to be about. It told me a lot of information that without that conversation I wouldn't have understood their needs and their contributions in the same way. I can only imagine if you do that a daily practice as a team, you get some really deep insights into how the other people in the room are at their performance best. Lexy Thompson: Yeah. It's pretty powerful and at Trybal we're virtual so we meet via the web, but at the end of every meeting we have Sunshine Shout-Outs where we, you know, they're not forced, not everybody has to say anything, it's just if it's showing up for you, we ask each other to share those things. We actually have gratitude coupons that are electronic that we give, they're free, and we just say, "Spread it." There's that, I don't know, it's some meme or something floating around saying that they're, you know, gratitude is one of those currencies you just never go bankrupt with, so why not? Lisa Cummings: Oh, for sure. Yeah. Lexy Thompson: Yeah. Lisa Cummings: If you're talking to a team and whether it's an individual contributor or a manager, and they just want to start doing some of this at work and get a movement going, what are some of the practical tools and habits and things you can do? Give me some examples. Lexy Thompson: There's actually just saying so, right? It doesn't even have to be a big to-do, it could just be at the end of a team meeting. You could just say, "Hey Lisa, I really appreciate that you had my back on that project, and if you hadn't been there it wouldn't have come out anywhere near as good as it, and thank you for that." Then you know, you know what your behavior was and you'll do more of that most likely next time. Too, you can be really formal. You can put pictures or memes or whatever into e-mails and just shoot them whenever someone's knocked it out of the park for whatever reason. It doesn't have to be big stuff. I got a gratitude coupon once, and this is one of my favorite ones, and it was just a, "Hey thanks for saying 'hi' to me this morning. I needed that." We forget about those little things, about eye contact because we all have our heads down in or our phone or we're walking from here to there. In that vacuum people are just missing that human connection at some time or another. It helps us keep that stuff present. Lisa Cummings: I agree. It doesn't have to be big and formal. I like that you leave people with a concept that no one has to ordain this. It doesn't have to be a company movement. It can be as simple as you deciding that when you walk by another human at work you're going to make eye contact and make them feel seen, and that can be a form of it. Just taking the time to give credit. I had a leadership session recently where they were having some issues in the organization where employees were saying their managers were taking credit for the work they did. If you talked to the people managers, they have no idea that this is how that could even be perceived because they weren't intending to do that. People weren't feeling seen or appreciated, or that the credit was getting spread around, so essentially determined that they were all kind of being credit hoarders and takers instead of givers. Once they started shifting that and saying, "Hey, the more generous I am with thanking people, and sharing that, "Oh, they made our team look really successful. They made our team act successful, and so we're going to give as much credit as possible." That it just spins up into more desire to be productive and more desire to do it, not just to say it but also to do more of it. Lexy Thompson: Yeah, it does translate it into action. One of the most interesting phenomenons of it is the actual receiving of the gratitude. Most of us are willing and able to extend it. We may not have a practice of it and we may not be consistent, however when it's given back to us, sometimes it feels really awkward. There's also a learning about Self-awareness and even it could be a strengths conversation with yourself or your coach about what is that. What's going on with you when someone says, "Hey, thanks for a great job," and you feel awkward. Whatever that awkward looks like for you. Lisa Cummings: I think this is a really important topic because it is a gift that you can receive and if you make someone feel like it's less than, "Oh, no, no, no, it's not a big deal. Oh, no, no, no ..." and you're dismissive of the gratitude, it could actually be like you're turning it down. Lexy Thompson: Uh-huh. Lisa Cummings: What does a gracious receiver do? Lexy Thompson: They just smile and say, "Thank you." It's that simple. It's that simple, and it's that hard sometimes. I've had it happen to me. I'll do a keynote and I'm just as nervous every time I do it, and I could have done it a hundred times and someone will come up and say, "Thank you," and if it's more than that and they're trying to expand on that, I feel uncomfortable. I just stand there and I continue to say, "I really appreciate that." I actually let it into my heart. That's part of it, that I've gotten very deliberate with around heartful and mindful practice around receiving, and not just giving. Lisa Cummings: I know you've been talking a lot lately, because I know you, about letting love in and you take a set of talents like Command or Self-assurance or Intellection or some of the talents in your line-up that people might stereotype as to saying your tendencies could be to not lead with a big loving heart. I don't know your full journey. I just know where you are today and really focusing on that. For somebody who is feeling more like, "Hey, I lead with the logic side and it's all just about the facts for me, and I just try to keep emotions out of work." Why would someone consider leading with a big old heart the way that you were just describing? Lexy Thompson: Yeah. Thank you for that question. What comes up for me when you ask that question is my grandfather. He was a pretty savvy entrepreneur in a small town in Vermont, where I grew up, and when he was passing away, his cold, old hands were holding mine and I will never, ever forget this, and he said to me, "I won't ever wish I worked an extra day. I will have wished I loved a lot better." That stuck with me. I was young and I didn't really know what that meant at the time and I will tell you I'm just now starting to be able to manifest it in a way that I feel like I'm honoring that. I will also tell you I work with a lot of people that come out of really bad places in their life, whether it's the death of a loved one, or their near death, or some tragedy. They don't wish that they could do more of the non-emotional work, it is always the relational work. When I look at my lineup of strengths I have Connectedness and Relator in my top ten. They're my only blue lines to humanity because I can spend days and weeks alone, and be quite content but at the end of all of that what matters is the impact that I left and that impact isn't on the bottom line, it's with people. Lisa Cummings: Without them in your life what would your impact be on? It would just be on a thing. Lexy Thompson: I think we're in interesting times, being where technology is leading us and there are so many exciting things to explore with technology. This podcast would be a good example of that, right? This conversation wouldn't have existed. Lisa Cummings: What a great point. It would have only been able to be in a big network environment in a niche like people who are interested in strengths development. I don't think that's going to make it to primetime 20 years ago. Lexy Thompson: Yeah, I agree. Yeah. It's exciting because I think that we also have an opportunity to find the things we need, when we need them, rather than just when they show up. Lisa Cummings: Speaking of things that you need, when you need it, we can make some resources show up for people right now. We've referenced a couple of books and resources. We've mentioned Stephen Covey and The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. I have a feeling that you do a lot of reading and gathering and researching. I also know you have a class on communications that is darn good. I've flipped through a lot of your content. Maybe since you're going to officially move from Houston, Texas, to Austin, Texas, I can just sit myself down into one. Anyway, tell people about some of your very favorite resources on this concept of communication, on conflict, on gratitude, and be sure to share your course inside of that. Lexy Thompson: Around the communications piece, difficult conversations, crucial conversations, and non-violent communication are my favorites. They're easy to get to. They're usually on the top reader lists. I think they're all on Audible as well, which is my preferred mode right now. Around conflict, interestingly enough, it's not a conflict direct book but it's The Speed of Trust, also a Covey book, that I think answers a lot of the 'why' around 'why bother' and the value of building trust and the void that's there in conflict that is not trust, and how to bridge that gap. Another favorite of mine, a real simple read that made a huge impact when I was going through kind of my mission for my own life, was The Four Agreements. It's a very simple thing and yet so very hard to keep top of mind and in action, but it made a difference. Those would be some recommendations I have. Lisa Cummings: Great ones. Thank you. Lexy Thompson: Yeah, you're welcome. The one we've developed that's on our website, we'll have a link here, it's a communications course and it has some of the best of the ones I mentioned kind of woven in there. The thing that I think sets it apart, is that it has the assessment StrengthsFinders on the front so as you're moving through the model of communication, you actually bring yourself and all your glorious baggage with you. When you come out of the course, you are quite clear, or at least beginning to be clear, where some of your weak points are going to be, and then how to make corrective action when you need to. Lisa Cummings: I love it. I can't way to attend. It has been really cool exploring all of our glorious baggage - yours, mine, the listeners' thinking of their own. We'll make sure that we link up to all the resources that Lexy just mentioned, so that you can get your hands on those books and I'm with you, The Four Agreements, you don't even have to go to Audible because it's just teeny, it's a teeny little thing. Lexy Thompson: Yeah, it is. Lisa Cummings: There you go. It's like a back pocket size. Lexy Thompson: It is. Lisa Cummings: We'll get them all the links to that and to your course. I want to thank you, everyone, for listening again to Lead Through Strengths. Remember, using your strengths at work makes you a stronger performer at work.

My guest on this episode is one of my good friends, David Knapp-Fisher. We met at the World Domination Summit where we found out that we live 4 blocks apart, and have been constantly connecting ever since. David is a father, speaker, and writer who loves connecting with people – especially the passionate and inspiring ones who lead remarkable lives. He describes himself as a guy who bumbled through school but always knew that he was smart outside of the standard school setting. He worked as a chef for some time until he realized that his passion is connecting with people. We chatted (with David right in my home office) about keeping connections alive, his routine, and the power of saying hello. Some specific topics we talked about are: How we met and first said hello to each other at the World Domination Summit (2:37). The importance of having the right knowledge to be productive. And in cases when you don't how you can tap into gaining more knowledge by finding and saying hello to someone who does have it (5:20; 6:29). David's method to foster and maintain authentic connections through priority, productivity, and doing the right things, (8:54), and a morning coffee-and-email-routine he's been doing to ensure that this aspect is covered in the first hour of his day (11:28). Why it is important to always ask ‘How can I help you?' which according to him may even be more important than saying hello (9:53). My takeaway on his point of view translated into productivity practice - such as going into his email app with missions rather than questions (10:18), and being deliberate in maintaining connections (10:51). The idea that by going into "self-serving mode" that we can wind up serving others. On that note, David shared the story of how merely introducing two people served a larger purpose (15:10). People's tendency to perceive arrogance due to systems we put in place. An example of which is illustrated in my story involving scheduling podcast interviews via Acuity (17:06), and David's experience managing Inspired Victoria and how he was able to resolve this through fairness and honesty (18:30; 23:13). The process he uses if he wants to reach out to people or include people more closely in his life (21:50; 25:26). An interesting rule he enforces in the Inspired Victoria community so people get to connect based on their passions (26:37), and a related story during my theater days about connecting through passions, and how we often miss opportunities like these when we only see things at face value (27:25). A story of saying hello that took so long to happen – maybe brought by fear of rejection – that ultimately led to a friendship (30:25). David's take on processing rejection (32:06), and his final words of advice (33:09). One of the hardest parts about being an art teacher is advocating for your art program. Feeling vulnerable to budget cuts, constantly aligning with new standards, accommodating everyone’s perception and expectation of what art should be can be very challenging. Recently I asked the Sparklers to share what their biggest struggles are right now in the art room…I love questions like this because it really gives you insight on how people are feeling and what their current struggles are. And the most fascinating thing for me is that everyone can relate. Today’s episode addresses three very common struggles in the art room: reduced class time, art project expectations and explaining or defending art techniques or art philosophies. You may be surprised what all these struggles have in common and how to best eliminate them from your day. IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN:  Why one of the hardest parts about being an art teacher is advocating for your art program Like children, no two art teachers are alike How as a creative you do have the capacity to think outside of the box to solve problems Why you should look at changing your perception of the problem - instead of battling the administration How the amount of excitement you show will affect the engagement of the children How your children are your advocates, and the way you talk to the parents through the art Questions to ask yourself to help define your art room intentions How your end-of-the-year art show will answer every question that parents and administrations have about your art program How the Four Agreements have transformed Patty's life Subscribe to Art Made Easy and receive new episodes directly on your phone via your podcast App.  Note: If you have an iPhone, subscribe in iTunes. There's no greater fear for a parent than their child being harmed and when that child faces a threat, they'll do whatever they have to to protect them, from this world into the next. Whatever that threat is, it had better beware. Tonight's Quote: “We had been through this step before. We know what it’s like to get into that fight or flight mechanism and when it comes to your children, you fight. — "John" the father of "Jack" from The Sludge Entity, Part 1 Show Links: We've found that some sites are not showing these links as clickable unless they are URLs, so until those outlets improve their show notes section, we are providing actual URLs next to the clickable description of each link to make things easier for our listeners! When your loved one is seriously ill, you take them to the doctor. But what do you do when you've taken them to every doctor, specialist and holistic healer you could see, ran every recommended test and all the professionals can tell you is something is definitely quite wrong, but no one can tell you why or what to do about it? This was the case with our guests John and Deborah, whose son Jack was so sick and getting worse that they sought answers where most wouldn't consider looking. Tonight's Quote: “In this generation, like so many others, people have been led to believe that the devil is a myth, a figure, an idea, the idea of evil. But the devil exists and we must fight against him.” — Pope Francis Show Links: We've found that some sites are not showing these links as clickable unless they are URLs, so until those outlets improve their show notes section, we are providing actual URLs next to the clickable description of each link to make things easier for our listeners!
