How do you go from being the kid who couldn't sit still in class to leading the machine shop for one of Elon Musk's most ambitious ventures? In this gripping and often jaw-dropping episode, I sit down with Jim Cooney—Head of the Machine Shop at Neuralink—for a raw and refreshingly honest conversation about resilience, reinvention, and the unconventional road to mastery in machining.  While Jim isn't a shop owner (my usual guest profile), his story offers every bit of the leadership lessons, grit, and insight that Machine Shop Mastery is known for. From his humble beginnings as a high school co-op student in Canada, Jim details how a lack of direction became fuel for a deeply hands-on journey into the world of machining. With stories of brutal old-school shop cultures, tools thrown across the room, and managers who trained with tough love (and zero patience), Jim paints a vivid picture of how adversity shaped his technical excellence and emotional resilience. But what really sets this episode apart is Jim's transition from traditional tool & die work to the heart of Silicon Valley innovation. His career path took him from automotive stamping in Ontario to leading critical manufacturing efforts at Tesla, Apollo Fusion, and now Neuralink. He shares what it's like building high-stakes, high-tech parts under pressure—and how working insane hours during Tesla's “production hell” made him sharper, faster, and more adaptable. If you want a peek into the mindset and muscle it takes to thrive in a fast-paced, bleeding-edge manufacturing environment—or you're looking for inspiration on how to grow through adversity—this episode delivers in spades.  You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in… (0:00) Jim kicks off with a fun story about getting a missile export license (0:14) Why you should complete the Modern Machine Shops Top Shops Survey (1:42) Learn about Jim Cooney and his unique journey in manufacturing (4:35) Jim shares how struggling in school led him to discover machining (8:00) Stories from his early days in tough, old-school Canadian machine shops (10:44) Jim explains Canada's apprenticeship system and earning his Red Seal (14:19) Jim's first exposure to CNC and CAM at Massiv Die Form (20:04) Why Jim quit on the spot after being massively undervalued (22:13) How Jim moved into machining instruction at a college (25:46) How teaching machining and coaching hockey built his leadership skills (28:27) A surprise text leads Jim to Tesla during “production hell” (31:17) Wild stories from Tesla's stamping department and nonstop chaos (34:21) Navigating the die process at Tesla (repair work) (38:15) Creating a game-changing apprenticeship program inside Tesla (40:41) Moving into the startup world with Apollo Fusion and later Astra (46:00) Facing burnout, broken promises, and the tough side of acquisitions (48:58) Quitting Astro and joining Neuralink the day he got his green card (51:49) Jim's experience working at Neuralink (and their trajectory) (57:12) Jim's process choosing the machinery they needed (1:00:15) Building and growing a team with a high standard of excellence (1:03:37) Skills to acquire if you aspire to be in leadership (1:06:33) Why you need to check out the Lights Out podcast Resources & People Mentioned Complete the Modern Machine Shops Top Shops Survey Tesla Neuralink Connect with Jim Cooney Connect on LinkedIn Connect With Machine Shop Mastery The website LinkedIn YouTube Instagram Subscribe to Machine Shop Mastery on Apple, Spotify Audio Production and Show Notes by - PODCAST FAST TRACK

Episode Summary In this episode of the Canadian Immigration Podcast, host Mark Holthe and co-host Alicia Backman-Beharry continue the Time's Up series with an in-depth look at the Certificate of Qualification (COQ) and how it affects Express Entry points. Many applicants mistakenly assume they qualify for the 50 additional CRS points—only to have their applications refused. Mark and Alicia break down the eligibility criteria for claiming these points, common mistakes applicants make, and the step-by-step process for obtaining a legitimate COQ from a Canadian province or territory. With IRCC's tightening immigration policies and the elimination of job offer points on the horizon, getting this right has never been more important. Key Topics Discussed Understanding the Certificate of Qualification What is a Certificate of Qualification, and who needs one? The critical difference between a provincial professional license and a trade certificate of qualification. Why doctors, nurses, and other regulated professionals do NOT qualify for these points. Express Entry Eligibility: Do You Really Get Those 50 Points? The specific trades that qualify for COQ points under Express Entry. Language requirements: Why a CLB 7 or higher is essential for claiming the full 50 points. How miscalculating your CRS score can lead to refusals and lost opportunities. Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them Clicking “Yes” to having a COQ when you don't—why this leads to refusals. Assuming a professional certification (e.g., nursing, accounting, law) qualifies for trade points. Failing to obtain the COQ before submitting an Express Entry profile. How to Properly Obtain a Certificate of Qualification The step-by-step process of getting a COQ in British Columbia as a cook (example case study). Differences in provincial regulations—where and how to apply. The role of Red Seal certification in cross-provincial trade recognition. The Future of Express Entry: What's Changing? The upcoming removal of job offer points and its impact on Express Entry. Why trade workers may have an advantage in future Express Entry draws. The shift towards category-based Express Entry draws—what trade workers need to know. Key Takeaways Not all certifications count as a Certificate of Qualification—only specific skilled trades qualify for points. You must obtain the COQ before claiming points—falsely claiming it can lead to a refused application. Language scores matter! If your CLB is below 7, you won't get the full 50 points. With job offer points disappearing, trade workers may benefit from Express Entry changes—but only if they have a proper COQ. Consult an immigration professional before applying—small errors can cost you your chance at PR. Quotes from the Episode Mark Holthe: "There's nothing worse than filing your Express Entry application, expecting 50 points for a Certificate of Qualification, and then getting a refusal because you never actually qualified." Alicia Backman-Beharry:"Professions and skilled trades are NOT the same thing. If you're a doctor or a nurse, you do NOT qualify for these 50 points—it's as simple as that." In this episode, Beau Wigington chats with Travis Field, a Canadian rig welder now living and working in the United States on a specialized work visa. Travis shares how he “fell into” welding in Alberta, Canada, completing the Red Seal apprenticeship program and eventually adding a vast number of specialized welding certifications to his repertoire. He highlights the pivotal role of his mentor, whose encyclopedic knowledge and private welding school exposed Travis to an array of exotic metals—like titanium and zirconium—and fueled his desire to keep learning. Travis explains key differences between welding in Canada and the U.S., the nuances of welding thick-wall titanium for highly corrosive applications, and the importance of thoroughly shielding exotic alloys from oxygen. He also discusses the visa process, emphasizing how crucial it is to collect documentation, build a rare and valuable skill set, and thoroughly prove one's qualifications when seeking a work permit in the States. Finally, Travis offers practical advice for new welders—encouraging them to learn from experienced mentors, document every skill gained, and continually expand their expertise to remain competitive and open doors to international opportunities. Notable Quotes • “I kept welding because my mentor had all these courses in titanium, zirconium, copper-nickel. I just never stopped wanting to learn.” • “Any part of the metal that's heated has to be protected away from the atmosphere—titanium has zero forgiveness for oxygen exposure.” • “If you want to work abroad, document everything. In this episode of the Jaded Mechanic podcast, host Jeff is joined by his friend Tanner Brandt to discuss the challenges of being a mobile diagnostic and programming technician in the automotive repair industry. They talk about the difficulties of diagnosing input problems and the lack of continued certification for doctors and nurses, as well as the lack of stringent requirements for training instructors in ATMC-accredited schools. They also share their perspectives on the industry and invite listeners to join the conversation. In this episode, the Jeff Compton and Tanner Brandt delve into the crucial topic of prioritizing mental health in the automotive industry. They shed light on the high levels of stress and burnout that are prevalent in the industry, particularly among those in diagnostic roles. The guests argue that it is imperative to teach young people how to manage stress and prevent burnout, especially with the increasing demands of technology and automation in the industry. They suggest that changes need to be made to the way shops are run, vacation time is taken, and the overall atmosphere in the workplace to support mental health. They also emphasize the need to pay attention to the mental health of experienced mechanics who may have been working in the industry for many years and may be experiencing burnout as a result. Overall, the guests stress the importance of creating a supportive and sustainable work environment in the automotive industry that prioritizes mental health and well-being.Jeff and Tanner discuss how small changes in the workplace can help alleviate stress and improve productivity. For instance, one technician was stressed out by waiters coming in the morning, which affected his work. Another technician noticed this and decided to come in 20 minutes later to help alleviate the stress. This small change helped the technician and improved productivity. The speakers also highlight the importance of taking breaks and finding stress relief activities. They talk about how fishing helped one of them improve their mental health. The speakers also discuss how teaching young people in the industry how to manage stress and find stress relief activities is important, especially with new technology coming that could increase burnout. The speakers also discuss how workload and stress can lead to high turnover rates in shops and how small changes, such as adjusting schedules or spreading out tasks, can help alleviate stress and improve productivity. Overall, the episode emphasizes the importance of recognizing and addressing stress in the workplace and making small changes to improve productivity and well-being.The episode also touches on the mental toll that certain types of work, specifically complex automobile repairs, can have on individuals. Tanner mentions that working six days a week, 10 hours a day may work for a short amount of time, but after 20 years, the person's mental health will likely be terrible. The speaker also talks about how certain cars can keep you up at night and drive you crazy, and how this type of work takes a different toll on a person than just stressing about making hours. The guest suggests that the industry needs to start teaching young people how to unplug and manage stress, or else burnout will become even worse. The mental toll of this type of work is also discussed in the context of differences in working conditions between different regions, such as the difficulty of repairing cars in areas with harsh weather conditions. Overall, the episode highlights the importance of taking the mental toll of certain types of work into account and making changes to address and prevent mental exhaustion.[00:01:36] Diagnostic challenges in automotive repair. [00:04:46] Mobile auto repair business. [00:07:43] Tough work in the north. [00:11:13] Undercoating and mental health. [00:17:08] Dealership culture and experience. [00:18:17] Poor mentorship and toxic culture. [00:21:38] Flat rate technician competition. [00:25:22] Dealership work and low hours. [00:29:08] Management groups in auto shops. [00:33:05] Dealership vs. Independent Shops. [00:35:34] Car troubleshooting struggles. [00:39:28] Late Waiters and Texts. [00:42:12] Surviving politics in the auto industry. [00:45:35] Work-life balance in auto repair. [00:49:19] Coping with job-related stress. [00:53:38] Red Seal certification. [00:57:01] Red Seal certification for technicians. [01:01:32] Automotive recertification and obstacles. [01:04:40] Learning from Mediocre Classes. [01:09:05] Aging out of the industry. [01:12:42] Lack of Code Book in Industry. [01:16:34] Automotive training and education. [01:19:48] Youth apprenticeship programs. [01:24:11] Standardization in the industry. [01:27:26] Specialization in Automotive Repair. [01:30:38] Automotive Specialization. [01:34:08] Nightmare Used Cars. [01:37:33] Diagnostics and customer advocacy. [01:43:09] Shops nearing retirement and acquisition. [01:44:35] Shop matchmaking. [01:49:03] Driving through the mountains.

•    So I decided, well, actually it wasn't really my decision, my husband along with a couple of my girlfriends suggested that I start my own business and just see what happens, because then I can pick and choose. Because with new construction, there are some weeks that we were doing 16 Ground Works a day, like 16 houses all underground, that's a lot of digging and it's hard on your back when you have a slip disc. When you don't feel your best. Yeah. So it just seemed like a better idea because it's like, Oh, you know, then you can just pick and choose and do all these smaller jobs that everybody wants and put that faucet in here and there... Yeah, well, I ended up opening my own company, and there was a whole story behind that as well, trying to get the name, but I've been slammed busy since day one. It really is. Yeah, I had no idea, but I live in a fairly small town where I grew up here, everybody knows me, so it was very easy. It was an easy transition to go from working for a company to owning my own. (11:56)•   I don't know, though almost eight years ago is... Not very long ago, and women in trades was very prevalent at that time. I still grew up in a time where it wasn't. When we started roofing, I was the only female on site besides some painters or whatever, so I kind of lived through all that where you're not... Supposed to be are here, you're not in a very welcoming environment to the type of person that you are, which is a woman, plain and simple... And not just a woman, but one that's barely breaking a hundred pounds. Yeah, you're like, I'm a tiny woman. You don't fit. The mold... Exactly. When did that change for you? When did that... Because your Instagram's called The Lady Plumber, right? So when did that shift happen for you where it was like, Okay, I'm ready for people to know that I own WestCom, was there a time where you felt comfortable or what changed? Honestly, I don't even really know when that happened... I do know that there was a time... I think it was gradual. I do know what it was, it was I think when I started winning awards. (21:23)•    Definitely my partner, I call my husband, we're not married, but we've been together for 15 years now, so he... I think in some degrees, has been my biggest supporter, mostly because he just puts up with my nonsense... He hasn't kicked me out yet, so. Nothing that I would say is 100% supportive. I have some very, very good friends. Some very, very good girlfriends, and I only really started hanging out with girlfriends, I would say, since I opened the company... Not before at all. Really, I had some people that I hang out with, but I wouldn't really consider them super close friends. But now, I have a very solid group of girlfriends that I hang out with and I talked to... And a lot of us are business owners, and that's how we met was through Women in Business, something through that route. I would say that my girlfriends. A supportive business. Not that they can relate to, what I'm dealing with in construction, but it's never actually the construction part that's a problem. Yeah, no. It's never actually doing the trade parts, it's all the other parts. That's the easy part, it's everything that comes along with that, which you know, I guess they can relate, because you're dealing with bad clients and bad employees and, you know, stress. And it's all very much the same thing, very stressful. I didn't know it would be this stressful, but it is stressful. (37:31)•    I think it's also the mentality of not giving up at the first hurdle to like the 25th hurdle because they just come at you and knocked you down. I just read this book called Win the Day, and he gave this example of this bird, it's called a King Fisher, and it's one of the most highly covenant birds in terms of fishing, like it has this incredible fishing finesse, one of the best birds at fishing and catching fish out of water. And the guys sat there and watched the King Fisher try to catch a fish, and it took him 37 tries. Like the best bird catching a fish. 37, it took him 37 tries to catch a fish. That's like if you would have given up at the 36 try, you would have been one away from catching the fish, and it's like... I love that. Failure is actually... I'm just constantly trying to teach my kids that failure is the catalyst for learning. 100 percent! Things like tenacity is so necessary, that it's like, you have to be willing to solve the problems and learn and grow, because failure is for sure coming at you. (44:11) ABOUT MARY-ANNE BOWCOTT:Born and raised on southern Vancouver Island, was not exactly on the path for a career in the construction industry, but as her time through academics carried on, not knowing what she wanted to do post secondary took her onto a path of exploring unconventional options. It was a struggle to find employment at the time as being petite female teenager, as employers didn't exactly take her seriously. But through persistence and determination and one employer giving her the benefit of the doubt, she landed her first job in the industry as a roofing labourer. Now 17 years later, a shingle roofer, Red Seal journeyman Plumber, Class B gas fitter and successful, award winning plumbing and gas business owner, she is paving the way for young women seeking a career in the building trades, showing first hand that you can do whatever you set your mind to with a little persistence, motivation and determination. CONNECT WITH MARY-ANNE:• Website: https://westcomplumbing.ca• Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/westcomplumbing• Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/the_ladyplumber• LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mary-anne-bowcott-232346138 WAYS TO CONNECT WITH STEFANIE…• Website: https://shebuildshomes.com• Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/shebuildsbetter• Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/shebuilds.homes• YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/shebuildsshow

On this episode of the Construction Record Podcast, digital media editor Warren Frey speaks with British Columbia Construction Association (BCCA) president Chris Atchison about a new federal initiative which puts $21 million in funding towards B.C. employers hiring a minimum of 2,100 first-year apprentices in eligible Red Seal trades over the next two years. Atchison said the BCCA will manage the campaign in British Columbia while working with many construction industry stakeholders to ensure employers are able to hire apprentices and help laborers they already employ move to apprenticeship. Additional incentives will be used to encourage hiring from equity-deserving groups to create welcoming and inclusive workplaces.  You can listen to The Construction Record and TCR Express on the Daily Commercial News and Journal of Commerce websites as well as on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Amazon Music's podcast, and you can listen to the previous podcast featuring OndeWork president and CEO Tony McGrath here. OVERVIEWAs a commercial diver and welder by trade, Kendal Keating is immersed in a sea of opportunity every day. Hailing from New Brunswick, Canada, Kendal has worked a large variety of jobs across the country in just about every province. What began as an interesting possibility when his high school teacher mentioned “underwater welding” has manifested into the foundation for his lifelong career across welding and diving. Listen in as Jeremy takes a deep dive with Kendal to learn about his early career, welding in Canada, commercial diving, safety, and much more. ABOUT KENDALGrowing up in a small Canadian town, Kendal Keating always had the ambition to travel but was unsure of what career path to take. Kendal had been surrounded by trades since childhood, living on a farm with a tight knit blue-collar family. He did well in high school, but like many other students, was not too interested in the material. However, one day in an elective course was when Kendal first learned of his future career. “Actually, I was in a shop class that was just a burner course because I already had all my credits to graduate and stuff. Basically, my shop teacher one day brought up the thing of underwater welding, and I was like “Wait, what? What was that? And it's something that really stuck in my head and it just seemed like something that was so cool but also very unattainable.” As graduation approached, Kendal was looking into the sciences in pursuit of his original career plan to become a pharmacist. However, he also enrolled in welding courses at the local community college for a backup plan. As it turns out, Kendal was accepted into the sciences program being a high-performing student, but went with welding instead. “At the community college there, my parents were very, very supportive. Like I said, I grew up with a lot of blue collar background. However, my older brother went to university. He has a financial background now, as well as my little brother's a chemical engineer. Obviously, I got the brains of the family being a welder.” After graduating the welding program, Kendal studied in Alberta for an apprenticeship program before obtaining his Red Seal in 2017. In Canada, a Red Seal is essentially the equivalent to becoming a Master Welder in the U.S., which would allow him to start his own business and take jobs across Canada and beyond. Kendal explains: “So basically, a journeyman allows you to work in one province as like the top of your trade. But if you get your red seal, you can work at any province as the top of your trade. So it allows you to travel… I can head over [to] Australia and go to Europe, all that fun stuff with a red seal and still be recognized as the top of my trade.” As a welder, Kendal would bounce job to job as opportunities present themselves. Over his career, he has been able to work in just about every province across Canada. His work is split across welding and metal fabrication work, which Kendal enjoys due to the building element.  “I want to be building stuff, I want to see something going down the road, like a full trailer with a twin deck stream deck on it for rock crushing, and be like, I built that or something along those lines, right, I get a lot more satisfaction of building something than just welding something that somebody else put together for me.” As Kendal got older, he wanted to tie in the underwater welding element to his career. Looking deeper into the job, he learned that in order to do that, he needed to become a commercial diver which is a completely separate set of certifications. This would allow him to become a jack-of-all-trades in diving, but specialize as a commercial diver who welds. Through both of his experiences as a welder and commercial diver, Kendal has found a job which combines the two. “So the job I'm currently on, we're actually doing a refacing of an old dam - the dam was built in 1950s. And all that concrete on the upstream side is kind of getting...

Managers make decisions every day that affect their staff, businesses, partners and customers. Decision-making is both art and science. Managers must weigh options and available evidence to make sound decisions. Making decisions is unavoidable, and it can be scary. Some managers avoid decision making or make safe choices out of fear that the wrong move could hurt their careers. Managers should fear decision making, and they shouldn't seek absolutes in the decision-making process. Decision making is about making the most reasonable choices at the right time. Julie Parrish, the chief operating officer at RedSeal and technology industry veteran, joins Pod2112 to talk about the elements of sound decision making and how managers can make better decisions that result in better outcomes.
