This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Ichha Sharma.Today is the 18th of April and here are this week's headlines.Fugitive diamond trader Mehul Choksi has been arrested in Belgium following an extradition request by India, according to sources. Choksi is wanted by the CBI and Enforcement Directorate in the ₹13,000 crore Punjab National Bank fraud case. He had been residing in Antwerp on a residency card after previously living in Antigua and Barbuda. Earlier this year, India, via the Ministry of External Affairs, formally requested Belgium to extradite him. Choksi's wife, Preeti, holds Belgian citizenship, and the legal process for extradition is now underway. The Enforcement Directorate filed a chargesheet against Congress leaders Sonia and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald money laundering case. Special Judge Vishal Gogne reviewed the chargesheet on April 9 to consider cognisance and scheduled further proceedings for April 25. Other individuals named include senior Congress leaders Sam Pitroda and Suman Dubey. The case, which has long been politically contentious, involves allegations of financial irregularities linked to the now-defunct National Herald newspaper, formerly owned by Congress-linked entities. The ED's action intensifies legal scrutiny on the Gandhi family and Congress leadership. The Supreme Court strongly criticized the recent violence linked to amendments in the Waqf Act. During a hearing on related petitions, Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna remarked that the unrest was "very disturbing" and stressed the matter is now under judicial review. Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta agreed, warning of a growing trend to pressure legal institutions. The three-judge bench's focus was both on assessing the legality of the amendments and addressing the troubling nationwide unrest, which has sparked political and public concern amid ongoing legal deliberations.Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna has formally recommended Justice B R Gavai as his successor in a letter to the Union Law Ministry. Once approved, Justice Gavai, currently the second-most senior judge in the Supreme Court, will become India's 52nd Chief Justice. Elevated to the top court in May 2019, Justice Gavai, now 64, will assume office following Justice Khanna's retirement on May 13, 2025. His tenure is expected to last until November 23, the mandatory retirement age for Supreme Court judges being 65 years. In a dramatic escalation of the U.S.–China trade war, the Trump administration has imposed 245% tariffs on all Chinese imports. The announcement, made via a late-night White House fact sheet, came after Beijing retaliated against earlier U.S. tariffs, sparking global market jitters. Citing unfair taxation by foreign nations, Trump had previously levied 10% tariffs on all such countries, which were later paused to encourage trade talks. The revived tariff blitz, unveiled on Liberation Day, underscores rising tensions and signals a hardened U.S. trade stance under Trump's leadership. This was the Catch Up on 3 Things by The Indian Express.

This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Ichha Sharma.Today is the 15th of April and here are this week's headlines.India's retail inflation in March dropped to 3.34%, the lowest since August 2019, as food prices continued to ease, according to government data. This figure was below economists' expectations of 3.60%, and down from February's 3.61%. The sharp decline may provide room for the Reserve Bank of India to consider deeper interest rate cuts amid global concerns triggered by the U.S.-China trade war. Lower inflation could boost economic stability and consumer demand, especially at a time when global growth remains uncertain due to ongoing geopolitical tensions. The Supreme Court criticised the Allahabad High Court for its March 11 remarks suggesting a rape complainant “invited trouble” and was “responsible” for the incident. The apex court said judges must be cautious and sensitive in such cases. A bench led by Justices B R Gavai and A G Masih was hearing another matter when it addressed the High Court's observations, also citing a March 17 order that downplayed acts like breast grabbing and pulling pyjama drawstrings as insufficient for rape charges. The SC's response highlights concern over judicial insensitivity in sexual assault cases.Former U.S. President Barack Obama praised Harvard University for defying the Trump administration after it froze $2.3 billion in federal funding. The White House demanded changes to admissions policies, including "merit-based" hiring, limited student activism, and a government-led audit of campus diversity. Harvard President Alan Garber rejected these requirements, and Obama called the university's stance a model for other institutions. The funding freeze follows tensions over campus freedoms and DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) policies. Obama's support emphasizes academic independence in the face of political pressure from government bodies. In response to new U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods, China has reportedly instructed its airlines to stop buying Boeing jets, escalating trade tensions. Bloomberg sources say the ban also applies to U.S. aircraft parts, likely increasing operational costs for existing Boeing fleets in China. The move adds further strain to Boeing, whose shares fell 3% in premarket trading. China is one of Boeing's largest markets, where European rival Airbus already has a stronger presence. The development reflects worsening ties as the U.S.-China trade war spreads into high-stakes sectors like aviation. This was the CatchUp on 3 Things by The Indian Express.

The court questioned the state's ability to make changes to the UCC, particularly regarding mandatory live-in registrations. Senior advocate Vrinda Grover argued that the UCC imposes unnecessary surveillance, as information about individuals is sent directly to local police stations. The court also questioned whether the UCC grants police powers for domiciliary visits, which it found to be a potential violation of rights.Congress leader Sam Pitroda caused controversy with a speech where he claimed to have spoken at the "Indian Institute of Technology-Ranchi." The Ministry of Education fact-checked his statement, clarifying there is no IIT in Ranchi but an IIIT, which Pitroda had not been invited to. The ministry condemned his remarks, asserting they were reckless and could damage the reputation of the prestigious institute. Legal action was warned for any attempt to malign its image.A probationary primary teacher at Kendriya Vidyalaya in Jehanabad, Bihar, was suspended after videos of her making derogatory comments about Bihar went viral. The teacher criticized her posting in Bihar, calling it “unacceptable” and disparaging the people of the state. She claimed Bihar's citizens lacked civic sense and blamed the state for India's development struggles. The video sparked outrage, with many questioning the appropriateness of such remarks from an educator.US President Donald Trump announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on European Union imports, particularly targeting cars. Trump criticized the EU, claiming it was "formed to screw the United States." He pointed out the EU's higher tariffs and value-added taxes, which are significantly steeper than those in the US. The announcement comes amid ongoing trade tensions between the US and the EU, with officials raising concerns over European taxation policies.Hollywood legend Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their New Mexico home on Wednesday. Authorities confirmed the couple's deaths, along with their dog, but stated that no foul play was suspected. In the mid-twentieth century, the US, Britain and the Soviet Union formed the dominant troika. As the twenty-first century enters its second quartile, the three most important nations will be the US, China, and India. The most remarkable phenomenon in Asia in the 21st century is arguably the economic rise of China and India. Amazingly, the two most populous countries in the world are uplifting millions of their citizens annually from poverty through rapid economic growth. India will be the third largest economy in the world by 2030.We had with us on the panel:Sam Pitroda, The father of India's communication revolution, an internationally recognized telecom inventor, entrepreneur, development thinker, and policy maker who has spent fifty years in information and communications technology (ICT) and related global and national developments.Shabnam Siddiqui, Executive Director at UN Global Compact Network India,Kim Gabrielli, Executive Director at UN Global Compact Network Norway, &Rina Sunder, founder, Det moderne INDIA.

Anindita is a pragmatic entrepreneur. She loves to trek and travel and it was during her jaunt in the US that she thought about delivering Tasty and Healthy Breakfast options to Indians. When she looked around, she realized that there were hardly any Tasty and Healthy eating choices and she decided to jump head long into entrepreneurship along with her Sister Suhasini to start Yoga Bars. When they started, no one was making breakfast bars in India. And India's varied temperature conditions meant that recipes and manufacturing processes that worked overseas would not work in India. It was similar to what Sam Pitroda faced while designing telecom solutions for India. Anindita and her sister brought a pragmatic approach to figuring out how to make the bars, what to put in them and were also smart in taking advantage of the digital commerce trend to scale their reach. Even though she is not from an entrepreneurial family, it feels like she knows the basics and like a good startup, their focus and clarity has helped them scale to where they have. They are well positioned to scale further from here. Great story! Give it a listen!

* The temperature and Indian politics is heating up as the country gears up for the sixth phase of elections on 12 May. Hey guys, I’m Sonal and you’re listening to the My Vote 2019 Podcast, your one stop shop for daily election related developments.  * As you know, AAP held a press conference over the distribution of pamphlets with extremely derogatory and casteist language against its East Delhi candidate Atishi Marlena allegedly circulated by the BJP candidate Gautam Gabhir. And now our elections has officially hit a new low. But Atishi has filed a complaint with the Delhi Commission for Women and in turn, Gambhir has sent a defamation notice to Atishi, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia for alleging that he circulated these pamphlets. Gambhir first said he will quit politics if it can be proven he distributed these pamphlets, then he also said he would hang himself.  * While addressing a rally in Haryana, Prime Minister Modi slammed Congress for its leader Sam Pitroda’s remark, “Hua so hua” for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Modi said these three words summed up the Congress’s arrogance. Pitroda in response hit out at BJP for twisting his words and distorting facts to hide their own failures.  * Andhra Pradesh CM and Telugu Desam Party president Chandrababu Naidu held a closed door discussion with his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee in Kharagpur on future plans of the Mahagathbandhan. Naidu and Didi also discussed whether she will attend the meeting of opposition parties to discuss future plans, set to be held on 21 May.  * And your last update for the day, in a relief for Delhi voters, the Delhi Metro will begin services two hours earlier on polling day.
