Let's look at Dunder Mifflin and Michael Scott Paper Company to understand fair value calculation. We look at Dunder Mifflin's sales and Michael Scott Paper Company's sales. Based on the amount, we figure out how much did Michael Scott Paper Company sell for and how much should have actually been paid! Yes, we understand these are fictional companies. But this is a fun way to learn about the fair value calculation of businesses. David Wallace made a bad deal. This proves that when you're investing in a stock, you need to look at the management. This week we're breaking down “Michael Scott Paper Company”. Michael throws a pancake luncheon to promote his new company, Jim struggles with making Charles a “rundown” and the new receptionist has newfound friends, Dwight and Andy, in yet another romantic competition. By the way, the new receptionist is Erin Hannon, played by Ellie Kemper! Angela points out that Jenna has been a Fun/Fast Fact Queen well before “Office Ladies”, Jenna reveals that while shooting this episode paparazzi snuck onto “The Office” set and both ladies have something to say about a couple pairs of sunglasses. So it's Britney, bitch! … Umm no, it's not, Michael, but let's dance to some German translated songs and this fantastic episode!
This week on Scrantonology, Adam and Kenna discuss Michael's challenges as a new CEO, Pam's challenges as an ex-receptionist, Ryan's life challenges as an ex-VP, Charles' impossible expectations, Jim's stressful day, Andy and Dwight's bromance, and Kelly's desire for attention/validation. Also, welcome Erin!

“I would like to invite all of you to come away with me on a journey. [nips mylar ribbon with hedge clippers, it won't cut, he tears it down] Welcome to the Michael Scott Paper Company!" This week we return to the topic from our very first episode, an arc that shook up The Office and inspired the name of our podcast, the Michael Scott Paper Company. We go through how this run of episodes stands out from the rest of the series, how it challenges major characters like Michael, Pam, Dwight, and Jim, and how the meatball parm is Alfredo's worst sandwich. And we also cover all of the rundowns, parking lot soccer games, and C-shaped bagels that make up this arc. In the conference room we talk about some listener feedback on our Roy episode and discuss the announcement of a new workplace comedy from Mindy Kaling. And then of course we close with another trivia challenge. This podcast is sponsored by BetterHelp. Visit www.betterhelp.com/Scott for 10% off your first month! First thoughts of a library likely evoke mental images of librarians and shelves full of books. This episode of “Check It Out!” looks at two positions that might not spring to mind when imagining libraries, but play critical roles in managing the business aspects and communications needs of a large public agency Gary Sitzman is Administrative Services Director and Communications Director Ken Harvey both sit on the leadership team for Sno-Isle Libraries. Each of them has extensive professional experiences outside of public libraries and bring those skills to the opportunities to serve communities and customers. Together, they share their thoughts on leadership, tips on success in the business world and what’s next for public libraries. Sitzman joined the library district five years ago following a career primarily in the wood-fiber products industry. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the avowed “cheesehead” who unabashedly wears a Packers jersey during the football season, Sitzman started at Scott Paper in Wisconsin. He moved to Snohomish County and a position at the former Scott Paper mill in Everett. His career came full circle when he helped oversee the closure of that plant after it transitioned to Kimberly-Clark ownership. Harvey came to Sno-Isle Libraries in 2011 following stints at Community Transit and Sound Transit. With additional prior experience in TV, radio and emergency management, Harvey can look through many lenses at the needs and ways to communicate library district information to customers as well as non-customers. Sitzman shares that the lessons learned about adapting as a child growing in a military family that was often on the move have helped him in the business world. “I think there is an element of (adaptability) in leadership,” Sitzman says. “Leaders have a sense of where they want to go and some enthusiasm for how to get there, but also not being afraid to step out and be adaptable to the outcomes.” Harvey agrees that growing up with a family with military service brings such benefits along with a sense of something greater than the individual and sense of service. Away from the job, the pair say that it’s important to have a way to leave the pressures of the day behind. For Sitzman, that includes mountain biking at the moment and Harvey says he enjoys a variety of activities including relearning to play the viola and dabbling in arts and crafts projects. As for the future of where they work, both say libraries always have and will continue to evolve to serve customers. “(Some) ask do we need brick-and-mortar libraries anymore?” Sitzman says “That’s a myopic view for what a library brings to a community.” Harvey says the definition is continuing to transform. “The physical space is an important gathering place and giving access to materials, while at the same time, libraries are also serving outside those four walls.” Episode length: 55:18 Links Library funding and budget Sno-Isle Libraries news Library strategic priorities Issues That Matter community discussions Ken Harvey LinkedIn profile Gary Sitzman LinkedIn profile “Military families” in the library catalog “Organizational change” in the library catalog “Work/life balance” in the library catalog “Naming and Taming Overwhelm” by Sarri Gilman Sarri Gilman’s TEDxSnoIsleLibraries talk Duthie Hill bike trails

Marilyn Bodogh may have appeared brash, opinionated, outspoken or a little unfiltered. But behind the newsworthy quotes and smiles for the camera was a competitive drive to rival any of her contemporaries. Learning the game in St. Catherines, Marilyn and her older sister Christine had early junior success, reaching the Canada Winter Games in 1971. In 1980 the sisters appeared in the Canadian Ladies Curling Association Championship (two years before Scott Paper took over sponsorship). Marilyn eventually moved to skipping and in 1986 she led Christine, Kathy McEdwards and Jan Augustyn to victory at the Scott Tournament of Hearts in London, Ontario. Gold would follow at the Worlds in Kelowna, but it would be another 10 years before Marilyn captured another Scotties, then teamed with Kim Gellard, Corie Beveridge and Jane Hooper-Perroud. In Part 1 we'll cover the early years, the major victories, and teach listeners how to curl in kilts.
Today's Guest: Jeffrey J. Fox, author, How to Be a Fierce Competitor: What Winning Companies and Great Managers Do in Tough Times Order from Amazon.com by clicking the book cover above I can honestly and modestly say that I know a thing or two about fierce competitors in business. If you know anything about my background as a journalist, you probably think I'm referring to the CEOs with whom I've worked on books-"Chainsaw" Al Dunlap from Scott Paper and Sunbeam, Home Depot founders Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank, or Commerce Bank founder Vernon Hill. But I'm actually thinking of one of my first bosses, George Tenenbaum. Jeffrey J. Fox, author, The Transformative CEO George was a huge S.O.B., a world-class sonuvabitch. And I think he'd take pride in that description. And it's not that I didn't like and respect him, either. JEFFREY J. FOX audio excerpt: "Fierce is not an animalistic beast growling in the jungle. Fierce is a relentless, tireless competitor who wants every customer he can get." I worked for him when I was 15, buying and selling comic books at a flea market in East Brunswick, N.J. and at conventions everywhere from Manhattan to Philadelphia. George treated me well- paying me fairly and feeding me decently, too. But he was a tough guy with whom to do business, especially considering the nature of his weekend business. Every transaction was a negotiation, a deal, a haggle. Buy a little, he'd try to sell you money. Come in to sell him your old comics, he'd talk you into taking a pittance for that prized Fantastic Four #1. He'd chase people down the aisles to get them to reconsider. No one walked away from George! But my favorite story about George Tenenbaum was when he explained how life worked in his world. It came about when he made a mistake that cost him more than a few bucks. It was just he and I that day and in talking to a customer, he He blamed the mistake on his wife, Rona. Order 'The Transformative CEO' by Jeffrey J. Fox, available in print or ebook from Amazon.com by clicking on the book cover above! When the customer left, I said, "George, why did you blame Rona? It was your mistake." He said, "Bob, let me explain life to you. When I screw up, if you're here, I blame my wife. But if she's here and you're not, I blame you. And I guarantee you that if she's here and I'm not, she'll blame everything on me. "And when neither of us is here and you screw up, I fully expect you to blame me." The Harvard Business School, this was not. And this isn't one of the 60 lessons in Jeffrey J. Fox's latest book, How to Be A Fierce Competitor: What Winning Companies and Great Managers Do in Tough Times, but it certainly could be. Fox is the author of a growing series of business management books, including How to Become a CEO and How to Become a Rainmaker. He has a smart approach, producing compact how-tos that the average businessperson can read, absorb and apply in the course of a plane or train ride. Jeffrey J. Episode # 68 of THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID finds both Matt and Kevin enjoying a delicious pancake luncheon. Michael has taken that job and forcefully shoved it, and now it's time to assemble the dream team that will take the Michael Scott Paper Company straight to the top (with Nana's help, of course). Unfortunately, just like a peanut butter and tuna sandwich, sometimes your dreams don't turn out quite the way you'd like. Back in the Office, Jim sucks up then runs down, Dwandy form a musical bromance while fighting over the new receptionist, and Flenderson shares a bit of bathroom banter. Remember, you miss 100% of the pancakes you don't make. Incidental music provided by the Podshow Podsafe Music Network.
