Clothing worn for swimming

The city of Rostock, Germany, has just implemented a compulsory nudity rule at designated nude beaches in the seaside districts of Warnemünde and Markgrafenheide. This local ordinance mandates that visitors to these naturist-only zones, encompassing 37 beach sections along a 19 km stretch of coastline, must be entirely unclothed. Swimsuits, bikinis, and any form of clothing are prohibited in these areas. If you're caught clothed on one of these beaches, you may be asked by authorities to strip down or vacate. To be perfectly clear, this regulation applies only to Rostock's official FKK beaches and does not apply nationally. The city's beaches are now categorized into three distinct zones: naturist-only, mixed-use, and textile-only, ensuring that visitors can choose areas that align with their comfort levels. Enforcement measuresThe decision to enforce this ban arose from numerous complaints by naturists who felt uncomfortable due to the presence of clothed individuals in designated nude areas. Incidents involving clothed visitors allegedly gawking, taking photos, or otherwise disrupting the nude-friendly environment were reported. Rostock officials noted that many naturists felt their privacy was being compromised, prompting the city to adopt stricter guidelines. Rostock has a longstanding tradition of FKK culture, particularly in former East Germany, where social nudism was widely practiced. City officials believe that this rule protects the integrity of dedicated naturist spaces and ensures that naturists can feel at ease. Additionally, the increasing prevalence of smartphones has raised concerns about potential privacy violations, further justifying the need for clearer regulations. Beach wardens and local authorities will oversee compliance with the new rule. These officials have the authority to request that clothed individuals either disrobe or leave the FKK zones. If someone refuses to comply, they may be issued a Platzverweis (order to vacate the area). Notably, no fines are planned; enforcement will focus on resolving conflicts rather than imposing penalties.According to reports, wardens will patrol the nude beaches on foot or by beach buggy, but they themselves will remain clothed. The rule does not apply to passersby who are not staying on the beach—for example, someone briefly walking along the shoreline. Rostock has also designated textile-only zones to accommodate all preferences, ensuring that those who prefer to wear swimwear have separate spaces.Public reaction and controversyLocally, the rule has been welcomed by naturists and city officials, who view it as a reinforcement of proper etiquette and a deterrent against clothed onlookers. The Rostock city council broadly supported the measure, emphasizing it as a practical response to user complaints. However, international reactions have been mixed. Media coverage highlighted the unusual nature of the rule, as most laws regulate nudity by requiring clothing—this one does the opposite. Some headlines humorously framed it as a crackdown on “half-hearted naturism.” Critics argue that the rule might deter newcomers who are curious about naturism but hesitant to go fully nude. However, no major protests or legal challenges have emerged, and officials stress that common sense will guide enforcement. Germany's approach is unique. While the country has a strong FKK tradition, most of its nude beaches have historically been clothing-optional, much like those in other nudist-friendly nations. Even in places with long-established naturist cultures, mandatory nudity remains rare. France, home to its famous plages naturistes, generally allows swimwear even in designated nudist areas. Some beaches, like Port Leucate, post signs explicitly stating “le port du maillot de bain est interdit” (swimsuits forbidden), but enforcement is largely social rather than legal, relying on peer expectations rather than official action. Elsewhere, no such mandates exist, at least that I can find. Spain, Canada, the U.S., and the U.K. all have well-known nude beaches, but they remain clothing-optional, without any formal requirement for nudity. Rostock's decision stands apart—by legally enforcing a nude-only policy at its designated FKK beaches, the city has taken a rare step in formalizing naturist etiquette through law rather than tradition. In doing so, it extends the principle long observed in German spas—where nudity is required for hygiene—into the open, ensuring that its historic naturist beaches remain truly clothing-free.A model for naturist beachesRostock's enforcement of a nude-only rule is a significant milestone for preserving dedicated naturist spaces. The growing issue of textile encroachment on nude beaches has been a concern for years, with many naturists feeling uncomfortable in what should be their own spaces. This rule provides a clear solution: if a beach is designated as naturist, then it should be exclusively for naturists. By eliminating ambiguity, it strengthens naturist culture and protects privacy from unwanted intrusions. The rule now also provides a precedent. Naturist groups worldwide might consider advocating for similar policies in areas where textile beachgoers disrupt naturist spaces.

A lot has changed for Summersalt since 2017, when it launched as an online-only, perfect-fit swimsuit brand and quickly gained popularity on Instagram. For starters, it has since expanded to product categories including sleepwear, activewear and intimates, Plus, it now operates stores, on top of its e-commerce site, allowing customers to shop IRL in West Palm Beach, Myrtle Beach and Nashville. And Instagram is just one piece of a larger marketing pie. The growing business is the brainchild of Lori Coulter and Reshma Chattaram Chamberlin, serial entrepreneurs with complementary skill sets who managed to find each other and make a go of an ambitious business plan from their shared home of St. Louis. "I was creating strategy and branding for amazing brands while running my own agency. Then, after doing that for about seven years, I realized I wanted to eat, sleep and breathe a brand," Chattaram Chamberlin said, regarding her road to Summersalt, on the latest Glossy Podcast. As for Coulter, she was running a made-to-measure swimwear business, which had perfected the fits of its styles, mastered quick-turnaround manufacturing and maintained accessible price points. At the same time, she was tracking the evolving e-commerce environment and realizing the opportunities it presented. "I decided to create a business plan and develop a collection," she said. She initially approached Chattaram Chamberlin about hiring her agency, and the partnership took off from there. Now, six years later, Coulter and Chattaram Chamberlin are preparing for yet another year of growth. Their plans for 2024 include opening more stores and doubling down on collaborations, following their successful collections with brands including Diane von Furstenberg and Rifle Paper Co.

We are back this week to talk about swimsuits. And not just any suits, but Swimsuits for All! #slayallday Shopping for swimsuits can be a stressful, vulnerable, and frustrating experience. It's doubly so when your favorite store doesn't carry a cute style in your size, or when all the ones in your size were clearly treated as afterthoughts. #rude As the online swimwear leader since 2005, Swimsuits For All is known for swimsuits with superior construction, expert fit and innovative designs. Today they continue to push the boundaries of style and size in the women's swimwear space. The brand makes stylish, size-inclusive women's swimwear in sizes 4 through 44. Yes, you read that right. Your favorite personal stylist – Holly Katz - has been a fan, a customer, and a big promoter of Swimsuits for All for many years. Its lineup includes one-pieces, bikinis, swim dresses, tankinis, and cover-ups, and most of its suits cost less than $100. #amazeballs Even for the ones that cost more, you can usually get them at a generous discount during one of the brand's many online sale events. Through perfect-fitting swimwear catered to EVERY BODY, Swimsuits For All inspires women of all ages, shapes and sizes to be confident and carefree in the swim they're in. Join Holly for an exclusive interview at the NYC headquarters of Swimsuits For All with their Director of Design, Kristina Guilmain and VP, Brand Manager Bryan Bance. MEET KRISTINA AND BRYAN: As the Director of Design, Kristina and her team create swimwear that fits well, looks beautiful and encourage confidence through masterful design and construction, cutting edge fabric technologies and size inclusivity. Kristina is a swimwear expert and is a passionate swimwear lifestyle person who, she says, was basically born on the beach. Bryan serves as VP, Brand Manager, and comes to the brand from Levi's (did you listen to our last episode??). Bryan brings his experience of understanding the personal fit issues of jeans to the very personal fit issues of a swimsuit. Both are fashion areas that are hard to fit and require a deep understanding of how the customer feels about their body. Knowing their core customer and learning about their “pain points” when considering swimsuits is key to the brand's success. Once they understand the issues or concerns of their customers, the real design and construction work begins. THE ANATOMY OF A SWIMSUIT: #veryimportant Interior Components: The interior of the suit is what gives your body the support it needs. Swimsuits for All uses a power mesh layer that firmly holds you in from the inside. This lining lets the fabric on the outside be bump-free and smooth while supporting, slimming, or lifting from the inside. “The support of the swimsuit is within.” Other Key Elements: Underwire is your friend, especially when it is wrapped and made to be comfortable. Added to this support area is the “bust band.” The straps are not what hold your boobs up it's the band. Truthbomb: One size does not fit all. Customers often need different bra cup sizes for each swimsuit size, and adjustable back clasps. Adjustable shoulder straps are the last line of defense for support. They should never dig into your shoulders, and they are not meant to hold the full weight of your breasts. BUTT COVERAGE: Depending on when and where you are wearing a swimsuit, your desired butt coverage may vary. Swimsuits for All offers 3 main coverage options: Cheeky Cut: shows your cheeks! Full Coverage: covers your cheeks! Modern Coverage: in-between full and cheeky and offers a cut that is still sexy and modern. SIZE RANGE: Inclusivity sizing means just that: sizes for everyone. They offer swimsuits in sizes from 4-44. But not every suit is for every body. So, providing a multitude of styles is critical to offering a wide range of sizes. IN CONCLUSION: The success of Swimsuits for All is based on meeting their customer's needs in the swimsuit category: Bust support: they offer the most options. They serve a segment in the market for women who cannot find the fit or the product they are looking for. They offer a wide range of real sizes (XL at a box store is not Plus Size), inclusive sizing and mix-and-match sizing. STYLE MANTRAS: Designer Kristina: “Swimwear is not a “throw-away” piece. It can be an investment piece. Buy something that serves more than one purpose. We achieve that with the versatility of our pieces.” Marketer Bryan: “We want to give you the gift of confidence. We want to make sure that, when you are out and about in a swimsuit, you don't care what someone thinks about you. You are not thinking about what others think because you love the way you look and feel" Connect and support brands the brands we love, starting with Swimsuits for All. We are so honored and thrilled to have our Fashion Bestie, Supermodel EMME, back with us on the podcast this week! She is here to share her favorite summer fashion picks and give us a short recap from our last show where we interviewed the winner of her “Fashion Without Limits” competition, Nina Chen. Go back to EP 152 and have a listen! EMME's Favorite Summer Fashion Picks: Our BFFF (best fashion friend forever), EMME spent some time in Mexico this summer at Rancho La Puerta, a wellness resort in Tecata on the Mexican border - and as you can imagine - it was HOT and SUNNY! So, what are her secrets for beating the heat while staying in style? A large reed beach bag that she cannot leave home without. A large sun hat, long sleeves and clean-ingredient sunscreens! Anything linen. She says breathability is key, so go with the wrinkles if you are hot! Smocked Tops (you may even be able to go without a bra if you do it right). Any sort of tunic which will provide cool and stylish coverage – think Morocco. NYDJ skinny jeans. Gladiator sandals. Fresh pedicures (due to a “hiking toe”). Bathing suits that will stay on her body because she likes to move around in the water. Favorite swimwear brands include Anne Cole and Nautica – whose designs bridge the gap between coverage and style. Hot Tip: check out Swimsuits for All* for the best selection of women's swimwear! *As we speak, Holly is wrapping up an interview at the SWIMSUITS FOR ALL headquarters in NYC. Stay tuned for that episode! EMME's vision for Fashion Without Limits Design Competition To recap: Supermodel Emme is a Division 1 college athlete who put “athletic curvy” on the map and rose to fame in the mid-1990's as the world's first plus-size Supermodel, and is once again shedding light on size inclusivity in the fashion industry. After beating cancer a few years ago, EMME felt strongly about creating a legacy project. The result of this vision was the creation of the Fashion Without Limits Design Initiative. Teaming up with her alma mater Syracuse University and online plus-size retailer OneStopPlus (OSP), the nationally recognized advocate for body positivity, health and wellness is promoting fashion inclusivity in the classroom with the 8th Annual Fashion Without Limits (FWL) Design Competition. Emme enlisted the help of fellow advocate and veteran plus-size fashion designer Zahir Babvani, head of design & style for OneStopPlus, to inspire a new generation of up-and-coming fashion designers to put their talents to work for the silent majority -- the estimated 70 percent of American women who wear sizes 12 and up! #FACTS Emme says that she created this competition to galvanize the design school community around the exciting career opportunities in one of the fastest growing, yet most under-served, segments of the fashion industry. The 1985 Syracuse University grad, athletic Hall of Famer, and Fashion Without Limits founder says, “Learning from successful designers like Zahir Babvani shows young designers that this is a rewarding career path. Syracuse University is at the forefront of making inclusive design an exciting area of concentration, giving tomorrow's designers the skills, and ability, to enact real change on the fashion landscape. We hope this program will become a template for other schools moving forward.” According to Emme, curvy women are professionals, celebrities, mothers, daughters and sisters. “All women want to feel special, confident, and secure in their clothes. At Fashion Without Limits, we believe that love, happiness, and success have no size limits. Our goal is to offer fashion design students an inclusive curriculum that enables them to provide women of all shapes and sizes with the apparel they want and deserve.” – EMME It has been so fun catching up with the delightful EMME. We will continue to follow her Fashion Without Limits program, and her mission to change fashion for the better with size-inclusive styles. #YAAASSSS! Thank you, EMME! VOTE FOR US! Let's welcome summer! I discuss my relationship with plus size and swimsuits. I preach the word of self-love (again). Then we get into some humorous news stories from around a century ago. One about a marriage and honeymoon that is anything but what we think of as traditional. A fella freaks out at the sight of a group of women waiting for him in the jury box. Rounding out with some funny laws from Britain post WWI. Before ending my last episode until September (time for a summer break) I discuss the latest store share opportunity, the theme is Moving.Don't forget to follow on your podcast or subscribe on YouTube (Channel -JacquiLents). With Marth's recent Sports Illustrated cover, the internet is ablaze with opinions on women, beauty standards and how we should look in a bathing suit in our 80s. Much of this unrealistic standard of beauty is not now, like not new at all, but what was interesting to me is that most of the comments about this cover shoot were from women. Whether you're in the “she looks amazing for her age” camp or the “this is absurd, no woman in their 80s would look like this without a lot of money and intervention” camp, this episode will give you a LOT more to think about. Aging is a dicey subject for women. We feel like we are obligated to look as young as possible for as long as possible and we are also wondering where our line in the sand is about aging naturally: a little botox but not going under the knife? Dying our hair but no fillers? There is more to aging than deciding if we do it au natural or not and I think the most important thing about this pic of Martha is what it stirs up in us- and that can give us a whole lot of insight into what we need to unpack to actually “age gracefully”. Share this episode with a woman who would be helped by this conversation! We need a new approach to aging and I hope this episode helps us find that soft spot in the middle between pressure to look younger and grace to age in a way that feels just right for you. Target has joined Budweiser in the anti-woke panic. The retail company released a whole new line of clothes to push transsexualism, which included women's swimsuits with “tuck-friendly” features so men can hide their genitalia. And also among the collection were clothes with graphics from London-based designer Abprallen, which critics discovered was openly promoting Satanism alongside transsexualism. And after facing public backlash, Target has begun removing the items from its shops. ⭕️ Stay up-to-date with Josh with the Crossroads NEWSLETTER
