Send Kevin a Text MessageIn this episode of Don't Kill the Messenger, host Kevin Goetz interviews Tony Sella, the legendary marketing executive behind some of Hollywood's most iconic movie campaigns. During his decades at 20th Century Fox, Sella was the creative force behind unforgettable posters, trailers, taglines, and promotions for films including Avatar, X-Men, Independence Day, Bohemian Rhapsody, and nearly 1,000 others. He shares insights into his creative process, memorable marketing moments, and the philosophy that guided his extraordinary career.Research as the Foundation for Creative Solutions (01:55) Sella emphasizes that research is only as valuable as the questions asked, highlighting how audience feedback helped solve marketing challenges for films like The Happening and Life of Pi. He and Goetz discuss their long collaboration using qualitative research to refine marketing approaches for hundreds of successful campaigns.Finding the "Essential Idea" in Marketing (03:56) Sella explains his unique ability to identify a film's core marketing hook, as demonstrated with the Devil Wears Prada campaign featuring the iconic Prada shoe as a trident.Balancing Trailer Impact with Movie Quality (11:35) Sella reveals a crucial marketing principle about the relationship between trailers and the films they promote, using examples from both Avatar and The Simpsons Movie. For good movies, the trailer must be exceptional, while for truly great films, the trailer must match the emotional impact of the film itself.Groundbreaking Campaigns: Independence Day (15:49) Describing the legendary Super Bowl spot featuring the White House explosion, Sella explains how they created a cultural phenomenon with the tagline "Enjoy the Super Bowl. It may be your last."From Disney to Fox: Career Evolution (21:12) Sella recalls getting his "PhD" at Disney, working on hits like Good Morning Vietnam before moving to Fox, where he helped transform films like Taken through innovative marketing approaches and identifying powerful campaign hooks. The Three Pillars of Creative Success (43:55) Reflecting on campaigns for Walk the Line and Bohemian Rhapsody, Sella shares his philosophy that the most important elements in creative work are passion, talent, and taste—innate qualities that cannot be acquired.During this lively discussion, Sella showcases the creative intuition that made him a marketing legend while acknowledging the collaborative nature of his success. His story offers helpful insights for anyone interested in film marketing, promotion, or the art of connecting with audiences. If you enjoyed this episode, please leave us a review or connect on social media. This 1948 20th Century Fox Studios Year by Year episode is a doozy, a doubleheader of psychotic lovelorn men with bad ideas in their heads. First, in Jean Negulesco's rural noir Road House, Richard Widmark's spoiled road house owner selects Ida Lupino's unlikely and unforgettable femme fatale as his reluctant assassin, and then, in Preston Sturges' black comedy Unfaithfully Yours, Rex Harrison's celebrated symphony conductor spins murderous melodramatic fantasies and faces a recalcitrant slapstick reality when he suspects his much younger wife (Linda Darnell) of cheating on him. We unpack the practically infinite riches of these colossi of studio-era filmmaking, one with and one without an auteur at the helm.  Time Codes: 0h 00m 25s:      ROAD HOUSE [dir. ¡Hola Crononautas! .   Podéis apoyar nuestro podcast y su web asociada www.cronocine.com comprando nuestro merchandise aquí: Nuevo Merch: https://www.latostadora.com/cronocine/ Merch Clásico: https://www.teezily.com/stores/cronocine

As well as giving their in-depth and spoiler-filled review and analysis of the new film, Neil and Skye give their thoughts on the current state of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the superhero genre in general after several years of output that have been far from great in terms of critical and commercial success. They discuss whether Deadpool & Wolverine's box office success is a sign of a turnaround for the MCU, or just a brief anomaly, brought about by a very unique set of circumstances that allowed Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy an opportunity to make a third Deadpool film that openly mocks a sub-genre of film that's lost its way.

Mythical monsters abound in this YA-flick, and the two have a fun time chattin' what works and what doesn't in this swan-song of the Percy Jackson theatrical film series. Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 22-minutes playing a Disney Trivia Game that has some pretty dang difficult questions. Can you guess more correctly than Shirleon? (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)The first 10-minutes of the film are expediently-well paced, which for Melvin was a good sign. The "Fantasy Racism" from Annabeth to the cyclops Tyson gets to be a bit too much. It's very one-note.When the Three Fates Taxi scene took place, despite evoking Harry Potter 3, Melvin thought to himself, "Oh, I think I'm going to like this movie.".Percy's character arc is simple, and not all that explicit, but it's very much about the confusion between a found-family and a born-family, as well as concepts of faith.Tyson's cyclops CGI is off-putting, which is made worse when we see a cyclops in a flashback and it looks awesome.Jake Abel plays Luke as this character who likes being the irritating antagonist but is also really, really chill.Rewriting scenes, because that's what you do on a podcast. There's a mutuality and wanting more cost or risk within the Percy Jackson films, but that will never happen because there will never be a third film.Recommendations:One Perfect Couple by Ruth Ware (2024)Shesmadeofwords PodcastLake Mungo (2008)MAILBAG: Send questions with your first name and we'll answer them in future episodes! In this episode, we discuss the X-Men Prequel series following the X-Men films after a small reboot including "X-Men: First Class", "X-Men: Days of Future Past", "X-Men: Apocalypse", and "Dark Phoenix" (we should've known when they left "X-Men" out of the title). We talk about our relationships to the films, development history, interesting plot points in the films, box office reception, and what these movies mean to the superhero genre.

This week's Fox 1946 Studios Year by Year episode features the strange bedfellows of Henry Hathaway's The Dark Corner, a curiously feminist film noir in which the tormented protagonist is saved by the persistence of a good woman (played by Lucille Ball), and Edmund Goulding's The Razor's Edge, based on a Somerset Maugham novel about spiritual enlightenment and bourgeois ennui, featuring Gene Tierney's best performance, although Anne Baxter won the Oscar. And in Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto, the TIFF Cinematheque Duras retrospective continues with Nathalie Granger, Baxter, Vera Baxter, Le Navire Night, and Les Enfants.
