New research has confirmed there is an unmistakeable link between vaping and irreversible lung disease. The study published by Johns Hopkins University tracked 250,000 people - and discovered that e-cigarette use is associated with increased new diagnoses of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in New Zealand. Respiratory physician and Asthma and Respiratory Foundation adviser, Dr Stuart Jones, says it's been known that vaping comes with harmful side effects - but this study provides more concrete evidence about the damage. "The respiratory community aren't surprised at all that this result has come out - I guess it's what we've been warning about all along with the vaping that's been going on." We're also gaining insight into where our staff are at coming into summer through our interviews, returning staff check ins and conversations. Similar to last year, we are realizing that our staff are not the same as they were prior to the pandemic. What does this mean for us as camp owners and directors? Are there changes we need to make as an institution in how we train and mentor our young staff? Has there been a shift around who's applying, how they're applying. As leaders in our industry it might be time to take a deep breath and look at how things are different and how we're going to respond. Lead with a lens focused on humility and learning. Our guest today Stuart Jones, President of Outpost Summer Camps located in San Diego, California. Stuart is passionate about child development and best practices. We're excited to have him join us for this conversation.Listen in as we discuss:From your perspective, how are our young people going to be coming to camp differently than they have in the past?Talk to us about your sense of needing to “take a big breath” and look at things differently as camp leadersIs this a type of “reckoning” for the camp industry? How do we use this knowledge to positively impact staff training and camp this summer? Under a new law passed by parliament last night, vaping will be banned in workplaces, and advertising and sponsorships related to vaping products will be prohibited, along with the sale of vaping products to those under 18 years old. The bill also limits generic retailers such as dairies, service stations and supermarkets to selling only three flavours. The vape industry says it's relieved the law change doesn't go further. But public health professor at the University of Otago, Janet Hoek, says vape products should be restricted to specialist retailers only. Solutions for Higher Education with Southern Utah University President Scott L Wyatt
Show Notes:President Wyatt and Steve Meredith are joined by SUU's VP for Advancement & Enrollment Management Stuart Jones. They discuss the impending enrollment crisis all colleges and universities are facing and talk through a few of the ways Southern Utah University is combating that enrollment drop.Featured Quotes:Well, as we go forward from here, one of the things that we need to be very aware of is that the enrollment challenges that universities and colleges around the country are facing may come to us. It’s just that Utah is a little bit behind everyone else in the declining of students coming to college because we’ve had a higher birth rate than many other places and because of the economic activity in Utah, primarily in the center of the population, the Wasatch Front, a lot of economic growth up there. But our birth rate dropped in 2008 like everybody else’s and we’re going to see some changes in 2026. And so, part of this growth strategy is to have a running head start when we know that the inevitable disruptions are going to occur in about six years.Scott Wyatt, SUU President. . . I think the most important thing that we did [at SUU] is made enrollment our focus. I love what Warren Buffet says, he and Bill Gates were asked what the key to their success was and they both said the same thing—focus. That you cannot do everything but you can do virtually anything if you really set your mind to it.Stuart Jones, SUU Vice President for Advancement and Enrollment ManagementLinks Associated with this Episode:TranscriptFollow Us:Solutions for Higher Education PodcastSUU BlogSUU Facebook
