Today the gang sits with legendary brewer Sean Lawson, founder of Lawson's Finest Liquids. About this episode: Sean talks about his distribution arm, The Beer Guy, which has started distributing an artisanal gin and tonic made by Bar Hill. The company is open to adding other non-competitive products such as wine, other beers, or spirits to their distribution arm in the future, with the focus for now on the gin and tonic Artesano cocktail. They may also consider distributing craft beer from other breweries that are complementary to their brand. The conversation touches on the brewery's ranking in the craft beer industry and the challenges of starting and growing a craft brewery. ================================= Watch on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/beernetradio Podcast feeds: https://www.beernetradio.com Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5mk5ITn9bXu1KOvx21QzEb Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/beernet-radio/id1591940567 ================================= About Beer Business Daily publisher Harry Schuhmacher joins his editors and other guests once a week as they grok the beer industry issues of the day. -Podcast Hotline: Text or call Harry in confidence at: (262) 345-2501 -Audio/Video feeds at https://linktr.ee/beernet -Articles referenced at beernet.com -Socials: @beerbizdaily #beernews #beerindustry #beer --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/beernetradio/message

The United States is awash in manipulated information about everything from election results to the effectiveness of medical treatments. Corporate social media is a particularly effective channel for manipulative communication — Facebook being a particularly willing vehicle for it, as evidenced by the increased use of warning labels on false or misleading posts. Not to mention the inconsistent, confusing, and controversy-stirring ways that comments and posts are moderated in social media spaces. While the methods of distributing misinformation have shifted with technological advancement, the principles of manipulative communication are nothing new. In Social Engineering, authors Robert Gehl and Sean Lawson explored how online misinformation is rooted in earlier techniques: mass social engineering of the early twentieth century and interpersonal hacker social engineering of the 1970s. The two methods converge today into what they call “masspersonal social engineering.” Through a mix of information gathering, deception, and truth-indifferent statements, the practice has one goal: to get people to take the actions desired by the social engineer. Are there better ways to understand the manipulation methods at play instead of reducing all information to a true/false binary? Together, Gehl and Lawson discussed manipulative communication of the past and present and how we might improve the ways that information is shared and consumed in the future. Robert W. Gehl is F. Jay Taylor Endowed Research Chair of Communication at Louisiana Tech University and the author of Weaving the Dark Web. Sean T. Lawson is Associate Professor of Communication at the University of Utah, Non-Resident Fellow at the Brute Krulak Center for Innovation & Future Warfare at the Marine Corps University, and author of Cybersecurity Discourse in the United States. As Earth Day approaches, this week's Beer Sessions Radio welcomes two environmental defenders in the brewing world — Michael Kowalski from Berkshire Mountain Distillers and Sean Lawson from Lawson's Finest Liquids. They will be coaching us on how to take the waste out of getting wasted!Opening the episode, Sean presents his pioneering Green is Grand project before spilling all about the Sunshine Canopy, Vermont's largest free-standing solar power structure, and its ribbon-cutting event on April 22. Michael joins the conversation with the “wasting not and wanting none” approach at Berkshire, which involves repurposing their used ingredients, remodeling their cooling system, and reusing their wastewater. The discussion then took a citrusy detour for you to take a sip of Sean's Double Sunshine and Michael's Grey Lock Gin.Do stay sober as we close the show with Sean emphasizing the holistic mentality when it comes to sustainable brewing, and Michael diving deeper into water and energy conservation. Finally, the gang comes down to a naming competition for the canopy, with top contenders currently being: Jimmy's “Curious George” and Sean's “Store of Sunshine.” Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. 14th Star Brewing is craft beer Brewed With a Mission 14th Star Brewing co-founder Steve Gagner tells us how a late night of drinking led to a WalMart run for soapmaking supplies, and how this all ties in with his eventual interest in brewing and opening his own brewery. Despite the humorous roots, Gagner takes his beer very seriously and strives to serve his community, especially veterans. The original business plan was jotted on the back of a notebook while Gagner served on the battlefields of Afghanistan. Upon returning home, the plan was refined with the help of his best friend and fellow soldier Matt Kehaya. 14th Star opened their doors in 2012 with a 3.5-barrel brewhouse. As demand for their beer grew, 14th Star moved their current location in 2014 and upgraded to a 30-barrel brewhouse. We talk with Gagner about hazy IPAs and the difference in a Vermont IPA and NE IPA, maple beers (we kind of had to), and we talk about his efforts to serve veterans, common misconceptions the public has about veterans, and the best thing we can do to support veterans once they return home. Lawson's Finest Liquids is always ready to share a little Sip of Sunshine When Sean Lawson founded Lawson's Finest Liquids in 2008 he wasn't sure if his "hobby" would work out. His original brewhouse was built to accommodate his fallback plan, a sugar shack to process maple syrup. He never had to execute the backup plan and today Lawson's beers are distributed to nine states in the northeast with appearances at bottle shares and gatherings across the country. Lawson tells us that although Sip of Sunshine got their name out to the masses, Double Sunshine was the first beer that folks started lining up for. Each release brought the crowds in earlier, grabbing breakfast and sitting up their chairs. Outside of New England, most people probably still know the brewery for their hoppy beers. However, in addition to amazing IPAs, the brewery produces several maple beers, stouts, pilsners, and more. Lawson even collaborated with a local distiller to make a spirit dubbed Hop Scotch. We cover a lot of ground in our conversation with Lawson including the early days of the brewery as well as growing into their new location, their focus on conservation and philanthropy, the continued popularity of Sip of Sunshine, and more on the other beers they brew. Load up the golf cart and bring your friends to Line Creek Brewing Co. Line Creek Brewing Co. was the first brewery to open in Peachtree City, GA. Their small community has a bit slower pace than Atlanta, and golf carts are a common mode of transportation. You're likely to see a few in the parking lot if you visit the brewery. PTC'ers have welcomed Line Creek with open arms in their first year. Their spacious taproom offers plenty of seating as well as TVs for watching the game and a large window to watch the magic happening in the brewhouse. We sat down with Paul Costick (Co-founder), Jason Carroll (Head Brewer), and Alex Knoll (Asst. Brewer and Lead Cellarman) at their anniversary party recently to find out how things went in their first year, what they've learned, and what's in store for the future. They give us the scoop on the three variations of their anniversary stouts, we talk (more) about kveik, Jason's background brewing in Ireland, and adding seaweed to beers. Plus, Paul gives us the scoop a collaboration Line Creek Brewing made for the Southern Conservation Trust, #ConserveGeorgia. Proceeds from this Pecan Amber Ale will help protect lands across the state. NEXT WEEK: Tune in for our conversation with Sean Lawson of Lawson's Finest Liquids.
