Such problems require creative and unconventional thinkers. Dr. Tammy Schultz believes that fiction provides the tools needed to engage with wicked problems. We talk about teaching creativity, professional military education, and how doing something different than usual can hold the key to literally changing the way your brain works.Dr Schultz is a Professor of Strategic Studies at the U.S. Marine Corps War College and an adjunct professor at Georgetown University's security studies program. She won the Dr. Elihu Rose Award for Teaching Excellence at Marine Corps University. She also was Georgetown University's Security Studies Program nomination for outstanding faculty mentor in 2019.  Dr. Schultz conducts communication plenaries and simulations at the State Department for Foreign Service Officers. Previously, she was a Fellow at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS). Prior to joining CNAS, she served as a Research Fellow and Director of Research and Policy at the U.S. Army's Peacekeeping and Stability Operations Institute. Dr. Schultz was a Brookings Institution Research Fellow.

Dr. James S. Robbins is Dean of Academics at the Institute of World Politics. He is a national security columnist for USA Today and Senior Fellow in National Security Affairs at the American Foreign Policy Council. Dr. Robbins is a former special assistant in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, and in 2007 was awarded the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joint Meritorious Civilian Service Award. He is also the former award-winning Senior Editorial Writer for Foreign Affairs at The Washington Times. His work has also appeared in The Wall Street Journal, National Review, and other publications. He appears regularly on national and international television and radio. Dr. Robbins holds a Ph.D. from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and has taught at the National Defense University and Marine Corps University, among other schools. His research interests include terrorism and national security strategy, political theory and military history. Tuesday, October 8, 2024 Hoover Institution, Stanford University The Hoover Institution's Wargaming and Crisis Simulation Initiative presents To War or Not to War: Vietnam and the Sigma Wargames on Tuesday, October 8, 2024 at 2:00PM PT. In 1964, America was slowly marching towards war in Vietnam. But what if that war could have been fought differently or avoided altogether? The Sigma Games, a series of politico-military wargames run by the Pentagon's Joint Staff in the 1960s, sought to understand the unfolding conflict in Southeast Asia. These games, which involved top figures from the Johnson Administration—including National Security Adviser McGeorge Bundy, Air Force General Curtis LeMay, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Earle Wheeler—offer a chillingly accurate forecast of the war's potential trajectory.  Choose your character for an immersive experience. See the game unfold through the eyes of pivotal figures such as John McCone, Curtis LeMay, Earle Wheeler, and McGeorge Bundy in this interactive event. McMaster is the Fouad and Michelle Ajami Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. He is also the Bernard and Susan Liautaud Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute and lecturer at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business.  McMaster holds a PhD in military history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was an assistant professor of history at the US Military Academy. He is author of the bestselling books Battlegrounds: The Fight to Defend the Free World and Dereliction of Duty: Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Lies that Led to Vietnam. Mai Elliott is the author of The Sacred Willow: Four Generations in the Life of a Vietnamese Family, a personal and family memoir which was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, and RAND in Southeast Asia: A History of the Vietnam War Era. She was previously an Assistant Professor at the Naval War College as well as a senior policy advisor to the Cyberspace Solarium Commission. Dr. Schneider was a 2020 winner of the Perry World House-Foreign Affairs Emerging Scholars Policy Prize. She is also the recipient of a Minerva grant on autonomy (with co-PIs Michael Horowitz, Julia Macdonald, and Allen Dafoe), a University of Denver grant to study public responses to the use of drones (with Macdonald), and a grant from the Stanton Foundation to study networks, cyber, and nuclear stability through wargames. Dr. Schneider is an active member of the defense policy community with previous positions at the Center for a New American Security and the RAND Corporation. Before beginning her academic career, she spent six years as an Air Force officer in South Korea and Japan and is currently a reservist assigned to US Space Systems Command. She has received fellowships from the Social Science Research Council, Fulbright Commission, and the MacArthur and Mellon Foundations. She was a Visiting Fellow at the European University Institute (2019), a Research Fellow at the University of Helsinki's Aleksanteri Institute for Russian and Eastern European Studies (2011), and an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the International University of Sarajevo (2008-10) as well as at the American University, Girne-Cyprus (2011-12). How might the philosophies of the classical Greeks apply to today's AI technologies? Does the concept of a virtuous life translate into the development and use of artificial intelligence? Given their belief in the value of seeking knowledge as a pathway to virtue, how might this principle apply to the creation of AI systems that learn and evolve? Plato introduces the four cardinal virtues of wisdom, courage, justice and temperance in Book 4 of "The Republic" and Aristotle expands them and explains how to make them practical in "The Nicomachean Ethics. How can these virtues be integrated into the design and operational principles of AI systems to ensure they contribute positively to society? The Greeks faced numerous ethical dilemmas that tested their principles. Can you discuss a modern ethical dilemma in AI that may involve a young Naval Officer's leadership and decision making, and how applying a classical Greek approach to ethics might offer a path to resolving it?  Dr. Joe Thomas serves as the Director, VADM James B. Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership at the US Naval Academy.  A retired Marine, he served previously as the Class of 1961 Professor of Leadership Education at USNA and as Director, MajGen John A. Lejeune Leadership Institute at Marine Corps University. In addition, he's taught at the University of Notre Dame, University of Maryland, George Washington University and the National Outdoor Leadership School. He has published five books on the topics of leadership and ethics, along with numerous articles, book chapters, and research reports.  Joe supported student research that led to the award of Rhodes, Mitchell, and Fulbright scholarships. Joe holds masters' degrees from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University and the US Army War College, a PhD from George Mason University, and a Certificate in Public Leadership from the Brookings Institute.

On October 1st, 2022 we published a #BruteCast with COL Bill Edwards, USA(Ret) where we discussed the use of small UAS in a kinetic role. Nearly 18 months later we've seen a massive proliferation of these weapons while watching the war in Ukraine their their 'eyes'. In this episode we talk to Dr. Edward J. Erickson and Col Frederick Lorenz, USMC(Ret) about the the new edition of their book "Strategic Waters: Iraq and Security Planning in the Euphrates-Tigris Basin". The issue of freshwater scarcity has always been of vital concern to humans, and today it is increasingly characterized as a strategic factor in security planning. In the Euphrates-Tigris basin, water apportionment and management combined with climate change are increasingly emerging as threats to regional stability. The United States has a longterm strategic interest in the Euphrates-Tigris basin that, in turn, is directly linked to the national interests of the riparian states. The expanded second edition of Strategic Water: Iraq and Security Planning in the Euphrates-Tigris Basin updates analysis of the geopolitical situation and expands coverage of the aspirations of the basin countries. Finally, the book presents new conclusions and a proposed framework for action in the next 10 to 20 years. My guest today is Noel Bulger.Noel is a returning guest to the podcast after sharing pieces of his story on episode 100!  Noel is a leadership coach and veteran of the US Marine Corps.  Noel grew up in Ireland and moved to the United States at age 18.  He has had life toss him some difficult curveballs including the loss of his son, PTSD from his time in the military, and a traumatic childhood.In our conversation today, Noel shares reflections on his divorce and the process of healing and reentering relationship after the loss.  His introspection is inspiring, and he shares a beautiful wisdom that has been birthed through pain.Noel works with organization and leaders around the globe helping them develop the skills of leadership, communication, strategy creation, and culture transformation.Noel has degrees from Georgetown and Stanford Universities, Thomas Aquinas College, and the Marine Corps University.  He has been awarded medals of commendation and achievement from both the Navy and the Marine Corps.Noel, thank you for entering into this amazing conversation. -Erik Melanson is an O2X Lead Instructor who currently serves on active duty in the United States Marine Corps as an Intelligence Officer. -He has spent the majority of his career in the special operations community, deploying in support of combat operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Africa. While serving in Marine Special Operations Command or MARSOC, he was introduced to human performance. From that point forward, human performance and the role of the tactical athlete have been a staple in his life.-In August of 2020 after returning from Afghanistan, he suffered a traumatic injury that left him paralyzed below the knee in his left leg. His doctors, surgeons, and rehabilitation team credit his physical and mental conditioning as the main reason he has been able to remain on active duty, and recover to the level he has from his limb salvage injury. It was during his time at Walter Reed that his passion for helping fellow injured and wounded individuals rehabilitate their body and mind really took off. He is a huge proponent of the mental health aspect of human performance and looks for every opportunity to break the stigma associated with seeking help for mental health and substance abuse issues.-He's a graduate of Norwich University, holds graduate certificates in leadership from Wharton and Harvard Law, an MA in Military Studies from Marine Corps University, and is finishing up his MA in Global Policy from Johns Hopkins University.
