WE ARE WHISKYMAKERS Founded in 2000, Compass Box is on a mission to make the world of Scotch whisky a more interesting place. From our Blending Room in London, we continue to explore the limitless possibilities of flavour. Different to a distiller, more than a blender, we are Scotch Whiskymakers. ‘Whiskymaker' is a word we invented – you won't find it in any dictionary. To us, a Whiskymaker is someone who feels compelled to make things better - to ask questions, to challenge, to experiment. When it comes to whisky and the joy it brings, we keep our minds open to new possibilities. We are excited by new production processes, new combinations of flavours, new ways of sharing and enjoying great whisky. There is so much there to discover. Compass Box was founded by John Glaser in 2000 with a mission to make the world of Scotch whisky a more interesting place. In May 2024, a new chapter began as John moved on to new adventures, passing the Whiskymaking baton to the talented James Saxon, who continues to push the boundaries of what is possible with Scotch to this day. Compass Box has grown over the years and now has a dedicated Blending Room in Richmond, London. We have our own stocks of maturing whiskies in Scotland and a small team of hugely enthusiastic whisky-lovers. We believe Scotch whisky is one of the world's great drinks. With more spectrum of flavour and style than any other spirit, it has incredible capacity to delight both newcomers and discerning devotees. Which is what we aim to do with every bottle we create. Behind the most exquisite patisseries are test kitchens of invention. Places buzzing with energy where chefs obsess over every flake of fractured crust, every curl of custard cream. Part artistry, part alchemy, this is mastery at work. And when their experimentation creates a true harmony of flavour, it has to be shared. Because generosity drives this endeavour. If nectar is the food of the gods, and joy comes from celebrating with others, then we need a new word for that irresistible urge. And that word is ‘Nectarosity'.   TASTING NOTES Joyously zesty with honey, lychee, juicy apricot and pineapple. Toffee and vanilla pull off a palate takeover, with lasting flavours of cinnamon bun.  When our forest king emerges from the trees, take note of his crown of oak. It's a crown we gave him to honour the transformative influence that wood has over our realm of flavour, and the magic of metamorphosis he brings to our blending table. His crimson touch is magisterial. Powerful. Yet balanced by a benevolent generosity that says ‘what's mine is yours – enjoy...'So, will you do him the honour?      Simplicity in three ingredients: sweet, sour and smoky. A Master Distiller Who's Earned His Stripes Brian Sprance is New Riff's new master distiller! Aside from some good-natured ribbing from his colleagues, though, you would never know it.  New Riff named Brian Master Distiller after getting the blessing from Ebersold and co-founders Ken Lewis and Jay Erisman. Ten years after he started, he is now at the top.  Brian has been with New Riff since before they started producing, joining in 2013 during the final phase of installation. He's been mentored by some of the best in the industry, including Larry Ebersold of Seagram's/LDI/MGP. His story is exactly what you want in a master distiller - start at the bottom, learn every nook and cranny of the distillery, go through the expansions and changes, ultimately learning the ropes on the job at a single place.  His title is a recognition of the work he's put in - remember, this is a guy who ended up at a distillery because he had a non-compete that blocked him from joining a brewery, and had never distilled before. We as consumers are fortunate that we don't have to wait to taste his mark on the product - it's been there all along.  Whether it's playing with different grains, different malting levels, using peated casks, or sharing those whiskies with legends of the industry (Jim McEwan and John Glaser, anyone?), Brian knows how the New Riff plant will react. He shares his story, how he's grown, and - in my favorite question of the interview - whether he would accept the title of Master Distiller if he joined another distillery.  Thanks everyone for listening, and thank you to Brian for entering the Whiskey Ring! _________________________________________________________ If you haven't joined the Patreon community yet, please consider doing so at patreon.com/whiskeyinmyweddingring If you haven't yet, please follow Whiskey in my Wedding Ring and the Whiskey Ring Podcast on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, and subscribe to the newsletter on the website.  New Riff Distillery New Riff Distillery Website New Riff Distillery on Instagram New Riff Distillery on Facebook New Riff Distillery on Twitter New Riff Distillery on YouTube Thanks to our Lead Sponsor, Black Button Distillery  Black Button Distilling Website Black Button Distilling on Facebook Black Button Distilling on Instagram

Ever since I started my whisky journey, I've been fascinated by the art of the blend. Malt, grain, bourbon, rye, American, Scotch, Irish - when you get out of the box, there's so much you can do.  Nobody embodies that in the Scotch world better than Compass Box. Founded in 2000 by American ex-pat John Glaser, the company initially struggled to get on a shelf. Twenty-three years later, Compass Box is, I would argue, putting out the same high-quality blends it always has - but now, their releases are must-taste events.  John and his team have been doing interviews for all of those twenty-three years, so I had to come up with some new questions for this one. I love a challenge, and I think John was happy that someone took the time to do some research and ask something different. And when a legend - to me, at least - gives you an hour of their time, you make it worth it.  I hope you enjoy it as much as we did! _________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: If you haven't joined the Patreon community yet, please consider doing so! Only 5 Spots Remain in the Barrel Club. When a Chinese spy balloon was spotted above the U.S. last week, Americans reacted the only way they know how—by shooting it out of the sky with a missile. But why do we keep insisting that China is our sworn enemy? We're talking with Jessica Chen Weiss, the Michael J. Zak Professor for China and Asia-Pacific Studies at Cornell and Senior Fellow at the Asia Society Policy Institute's Center for China Analysis, and John Glaser, adjunct scholar at the Cato Institute and host of Cato's Power Problems podcast. We discuss America's reflexive urge to escalate even the smallest threat, why our geopolitical position is actually way more secure than we're led to believe, and whether we might figure out a way to share the world stage with China. Writers Tocarra Mallard and Robby Slowik also join us to talk about why the State of the Union is always so overdramatic. Season 2 is now streaming on Apple TV+.CREDITS

Today I'm chatting with returning guest Tom Davenport, who is a Distinguished Professor at Babson College, a Visiting Professor at Oxford, a Research Fellow at MIT, and a Senior Advisor to Deloitte's AI practice. He is also the author of three new books (!) on AI and in this episode, we're discussing the role of product orientation in enterprise data science teams, the skills required, what he's seeing in the wild in terms of teams adopting this approach, and the value it can create. Back in episode 26, Tom was a guest on my show and he gave the data science/analytics industry an approximate “2 out of 10” rating in terms of its ability to generate value with data. So, naturally, I asked him for an update on that rating, and he kindly obliged. How are you all doing? Listen in to find out! Highlights / Skip to: Tom provides an updated rating (between 1-10) as to how well he thinks data science and analytics teams are doing these days at creating economic value (00:44) Why Tom believes that “motivation is not enough for data science work” (03:06) Tom provides his definition of what data products are and some opinions on other industry definitions (04:22) How Tom views the rise of taking a product approach to data roles and why data products must be tied to value (07:55) Tom explains why he feels top down executive support is needed to drive a product orientation (11:51) Brian and Tom discuss how they feel companies should prioritize true data products versus more informal AI efforts (16:26) The trends Tom sees in the companies and teams that are implementing a data product orientation (19:18) Brian and Tom discuss the models they typically see for data teams and their key components (23:18) Tom explains the value and necessity of data product management (34:49) Tom describes his three new books (39:00) Quotes from Today's Episode “Data science in general, I think has been focused heavily on motivation to fit lines and curves to data points, and that particular motivation certainly isn't enough in that even if you create a good model that fits the data, it doesn't mean at all that is going to produce any economic value.” – Tom Davenport  (03:05) “If data scientists don't worry about deployment, then they're not going to be in their jobs for terribly long because they're not providing any value to their organizations.” – Tom Davenport (13:25) “Product also means you got to market this thing if it's going to be successful. You just can't assume because it's a brilliant algorithm with capturing a lot of area under the curve that it's somehow going to be great for your company.” – Tom Davenport (19:04)   “[PM is] a hard thing, even for people in non-technical roles, because product management has always been a sort of ‘minister without portfolio' sort of job, and you know, influence without formal authority, where you are responsible for a lot of things happening, but the people don't report to you, generally.” – Tom Davenport (22:03)   “This collaboration between a human being making a decision and an AI system that might in some cases come up with a different decision but can't explain itself, that's a really tough thing to do [well].” – Tom Davenport (28:04) “This idea that we're going to use externally-sourced systems for ML is not likely to succeed in many cases because, you know, those vendors didn't work closely with everybody in your organization” – Tom Davenport (30:21)   “I think it's unlikely that [organizational gaps] are going to be successfully addressed by merging everybody together in one organization. I think that's what product managers do is they try to address those gaps in the organization and develop a process that makes coordination at least possible, if not true, all the time.” – Tom Davenport (36:49) Links Tom's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/davenporttom/ Tom's Twitter: https://twitter.com/tdav All-in On AI by Thomas Davenport & Nitin Mittal, 2023 Working With AI by Thomas Davenport & Stephen Miller, 2022 Advanced Introduction to AI in Healthcare by Thomas Davenport, John Glaser, & Elizabeth Gardner, 2022 Competing On Analytics by Thomas Davenport & Jeanne G. Meet John Glaser, Ph.D.:John Glaser, Ph.D. is an Executive in Resident at Harvard Medical School and recently published “Advanced Introduction to Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare.” Previously, Dr. Glaser joined Cerner Corporation as an Executive Senior Advisor, due to their acquisition of Siemens Health Services, where he was CEO. Prior to that, he served as the CIO for Partners HealthCare, now known as Mass General Brigham. Dr. Glaser sits on multiple boards of directors including the Scottsdale Institute, NCQA, and Forbes Health Advisory Board. Key Insights:John Glaser is a thought leader in the field of healthcare IT. He explores what leaders must know as AI becomes more prevalent in the healthcare industry.  Defining AI. Dr. Glaser defines AI as a machine that perceives its environment, and based on that perception, takes steps to maximize chances of success. One type of AI is deep learning, which is when a machine is fed large amounts of data and can then output an interpretation of new data.Data Challenges. AI rests on data. Data may need to be cleaned before use, adding extra steps. Data may be skewed or biased, potentially introducing ethical concerns. Healthcare adds an additional challenge of validation as doctors don't always agree on diagnosis given the same data. Implementation. Dr. Glaser recommends the CIO or CDO put together a multidisciplinary AI committee that evaluates potential AI products and selects a certain number to pilot. The committee can define who is accountable for conducting and tracking the pilot, but ultimately the entire C-suite is accountable for AI support and implementation.  Relevant Links:Check out Dr. Glaser's book “Advanced Introduction to Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare”Check out articles written by Dr. Glaser in the Harvard Business Review

As a presidential candidate, Donald Trump broke not only from the Republican Party consensus but also from the bipartisan consensus on the direction of recent U.S. foreign policy. Calling the Iraq war a terrible mistake and lamenting America's nation building efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, President Trump has shown little interest in maintaining the traditional form of American leadership of the liberal international order. He has threatened to pull the United States out of NATO, complained that the United States was being taken advantage of by its trading partners, and argued that uncontrolled third-world immigration was a terrible mistake and indeed a threat to the American heartland. Instead, Trump's “America First” vision called for a reassertion of American nationalism on the economic front as well as in foreign affairs. In short, President Trump's foreign policy is more akin to that of the pre-Franklin Delano Roosevelt America. Fuel to the Fire: How Trump made America's Foreign Policy Even Worse (and How We Can Recover) (Cato Institute, 2019), co-authored by Christopher A. Preble, John Glaser, and A. Trevor Thrall, this book provides an assessment of Trump's America First Doctrine, its performance to date and its implications for the future. Since Trump took office, it has become clear that “America First” was more campaign slogan than coherent vision of American grand strategy and foreign policy. As president Trump has steered a course that has maintained some of the worst aspects of foreign policy of the Bush and Obama era – namely the pursuit of primacy if not hegemony and frequent military intervention abroad – while managing to make a new set of mistakes all his own. If we trust the media, the world seems to be constantly on the brink of nuclear destruction. Since World War II, global powers have escalated the arms race to the point “Mutually Assured Destruction,” in which it would be suicidal madness for any country to initiate a nuclear attack. Some say that this logical conclusion of nuclear war has held major conflicts at bay, but the world may be getting more dangerous as nations with less to lose unlock the technology to annihilate whole cities with a single bomb.Hawkish conservatives love to talk about “getting tough” with countries like North Korea and Iran, whose nuclear programs threaten global stability. But while it's tempting to toughen economic sanctions or plot a pre-emptive strike to enact favorable “regime change,” this strategy does not work according to John Glaser, the Cato Institute's associate director of foreign policy. Glaser joins the show to break down the latest in the summits and negotiations with North Korea, and to provide some foundations for a more libertarian foreign policy in the current climate.John Glaser is particularly focused on grand strategy and the role of prestige motivations in international politics. To read between the lines of the recent summit, he notes that we have to consider what motivates foreign dictators, and how best to defuse their feelings of insecurity. After all, they are humans with the same desire for status and respect as any of us.Glaser's calm and measured tone in recent TV and radio interviews has mirrored his advice to U.S. leaders and diplomats. First, he says, we have to look at historical patterns. What drives North Korea's nuclear ambitions and aggression towards the U.S.? The evidence suggests that they mainly seek a deterrent to U.S. invasion. Given our track record in Libya and Iraq — breaking promises and toppling dictators — it's no wonder that Kim Jong-Un seeks a stronger defense to prevent his own demise.Second, we have to see how signals of respect — even if undeserved — may be the only way to get North Korea to make concessions in areas of human rights and nuclear de-armament. As the geniuses behind the “Bad Lip Reading” videos show, these meetings are less about specific negotiation points as they are about the surrounding theater, and the optics of a U.S. President meeting the North Korean ruler for the first time.Despite the spin from both parties, the recent summit was neither a vindication of Trump's tough-talk from a few months ago (as Republicans claim), nor was it a mistake. Glaser believes that the negotiations were a step in the right direction — a move towards removing some sanctions and giving North Korea some of the respect it craves on the international stage. However, he gives most of the credit to South Korean President Moon Jae-in for providing the assurances to Kim that primed him to attend the meeting.Speaking on Fox News recently, Glaser noted that this kind of negotiation is exactly what North Korea has always wanted. President Trump hinted at reducing the join military exercises by the U.S. and South Korea, and North Korea has offered to remove long-range artillery from the border with South Korea. It's almost as if a less aggressive stance towards countries like North Korea causes them to reciprocate and tone down their aggression. While these are positive signs, the real progress will come in the months and years ahead, as diplomats work out the details behind closed doors. Will Trump and Kim be able to put their egos aside to continue down the path of reconciliation? Tune in to get the full picture on North Korea.

Rethinking Pax Americana with John Glaser

We're living through the longest period of peace the modern world has ever known, so why all the hysteria of late? John Glaser, Director of Foreign Policy Studies at the Cato Institute, says it's past time to start closing many of the 800 U.S. military bases around the world, and retool America's strategy for deterring threats. He argues that the current saber rattling with Iran and North Korea represent the consequences of decades of overly-expansionist interventions. The idea of a “Pax Americana,” or the pacifying influence of American military dominance, has been around since the beginning of the Cold War. It has led us to make compromises with brutal dictators to maintain bases near perceived threats, and continues to cost us hundreds of billions of dollars a year. Worse, the alleged deterrent effect of a hegemonic military power may be an illusion. In a recent Cato policy paper*, Glaser persuasively argues that certain countries, which might otherwise feel neutrally towards the U.S., end up feeling threatened, and ramp up their military spending accordingly. Did Trump's “get tough” rhetoric at the U.N. make us more or less safe?
