We are joined once again by Snakeforce member Tony Petrangelo to continue discussing the topic of Plato's Atlantis, and whether this story could have possibly been referring to the time period of the bronze age collapse and the invasion of Egypt by the mysterious "Sea People".Tony leads us through the complexities of bronze age civilizations in the Mediterranean, looking at clay tablets of letters being written from one king to another describing the state of their kingdoms and the problems they were facing.  We also look at the description of the invasion and defeat of the Sea People in Egypt, how they were described, and what they were called, and where they may have been from.In the end, what Tony is showing us are the correlations to these events and some of the details given by Plato. He doesn't have a "location" of Atlantis, or an idea of "who" the "Atlanteans" were. Rather, he is looking at the evidence to see if this may have been the time period for the events described by Plato. Here is a list of the sources Tony used for this episode:BooksMeet me in Atlantis by Mark AdamsSunken Kingdom by Peter James1177 BC by Eric ClineSea Peoples of the Bronze Age Mediterranean c.1400 BC–1000 BC by Andrea Salimbeti & Raffaele D’AmatoSeagoing Ships & Seamanship in the Bronze Age Levant by Shelley WachsmannExodus to Arthur by Mike BailliePapersLiterary History in the Parian Marble by Andrea RotsteinA Mycenaean Fountain on the Athenian Acropolis by Oscar BroneerAthens in the Late Bronze Age by Oscar BroneerLandscape Changes around Tiryns during the Bronze Age by Eberhard ZanggerThe Great Karnak Inscription of Merneptah: Grand Strategy in the 13th Century B.C. by Colleen Manassa DarnellLibyan Trade and Society on the Eve of the Invasions of Egypt by Seth RichardsonThe Role of the Lukka People in Late Bronze Age Anatolia by Trevor BryceThe Ethnicity of the Sea Peoples by Frederik Christiaan WoudhuizenConnected Histories: the Dynamics of Bronze Age Interaction and Trade 1500–1100 bc by Kristian Kristiansen & Paulina Suchowska-DuckeNew technologies and transformations in the European Bronze Age: the case of Naue II swords by Paulina Suchowska-DuckeBrothers of the Serpent Episode 174If you cannot see the audio controls, your browser does not support the audio element

The fact that former Auburn, Texas Tech and Cincinnati coach Tommy Tuberville won the Republican Senate primary in Alabama last week got Doug thinking about the idea of a former Buckeye doing the same kind of thing in Ohio, so Doug and Seth covered these topics:What Jim Tressel's political career in Ohio could have been and the role he still plays in Ohio politicsThe political future of former OSU receiver Anthony Gonzalez, now a member of the U.S. House of RepresentativesThe way Gov. Mike DeWine and the state government tried to use football and other sports as a rallying cry to get people to wear masks before settling on Thursday's state-wide mask mandateDoug also started the podcast with two text subscriber questions, including one on whether Tressel's forced resignation was the best thing to happen to Ohio State football in the modern era. It's a different type of Buckeye Talk, but a bonus Saturday episode is coming with more hard-core football talk. Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish has asked the intriguing question: What if you could walk, run or ride a bike along nearly the entire lakefront in Cuyahoga County? We consider some answers to that question and analyze Budish’s bold lakefront vision on the latest episode of This Week in the CLE. Laura Johnston, my cohost, has spent two years focusing on the lake as coordinator of Rockthelake.com, making her among the most qualified to talk about the plan. I maintain that the recent interest we’ve seen in the lake is the result of Laura’s thorough coverage. Chief political reporter Seth Richardson and his editor Jane Kahoun join us to talk about the Democratic Presidential Debate that took place in Ohio. We go pretty deep on a discussion about the candidates and their stance on guns, and Seth offers his insights into which candidates stood out. Jane continues the discussion on guns with the latest on the push for voters to decide on whether Ohio should have universal background checks with gun sales. And, as we note, no conversation with Jane is complete these days without an update on the move to have voters consider that $900 million bailout for FirstEnergy Solutions’ nuclear plants. (Spoiler: Bailout opponents won a big court ruling.) City Hall reporter Bob Higgs offers his analysis of Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson’s State of the City Address, which focused on an unusual topic for such speeches, the disparity between rich and poor in the city and those who profit from that disparity. Most people seemed to agree that it was one of Jackson’s most powerful speeches. Reporter Mary Kilpatrick keeps the poverty discussion going with thoughts on her story about what MetroHealth Systems is doing to provide job training. It’s not just about job skills. We close out the poverty thoughts with news from Bob about the planned razing of one of the most forbidding places in the city, the Woodhill Homes public housing complex. Bob also talks about Jackson’s plan to restore the city tree canopy, part of the mayor’s sustainability efforts of the past decade. And we all have something to say about the move in Cleveland Heights to replace its government structure with an elected mayor. Cleveland Heights voters will decide that issue next month. Federal Courts reporter Eric Heisig stops by for a deep dive into the opioid trial that began this week. Eric provides all of the ins and outs and maneuvering that has been going on, even as a jury is seated for hear the evidence. Former rock critic – and current life and culture editor – Mike Norman offers a whole bunch of thoughts on the latest round of nominees for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Episode Notes Big pharma’s showering of Ohio and the United States with highly addictive pain pills, leading to an epidemic of addiction and death while generating huge profits, became much more clear this week with the release of previously secret DEA database, and that is where we begin the conversation on the midsummer episode of This Week in the CLE. Federal Court reporter Eric Heisig discusses what the database reveals about our opioid epidemic in the podcast discussion of the news by the reporters and editors of cleveland.com. Politics reporter Seth Richardson talks about his trip to the Mexican border with U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, who was denied entry to camps where immigrants are being detained. He also ponders whether Brown made the trip to gather information or to raise his profile as presidential candidates consider running mates. Cuyahoga County Sheriff Cliff Pinkney refused to answer dozens of questions from the county council about the controversies at the jail, and reporter Courtney Astolfi discusses the ramifications. Seth brings us up to date on changes to the proposed law to honor Aisha Fraser, who police say was killed by her former husband, former Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Lance Mason. A whole lot of extras have been added to the bill, which originally was about a simple assessment to determine whether accused abusers should be kept in jail to protect their victims pending trial. Seth also talks about the state budget, which the Legislature passed well beyond its deadline, and some of its pieces and parts, including the changing of the legal age for smoking to 21. Eric discusses his story this week on Reality TV star Kim Kardashian’s efforts on behalf of a former Ohio Death Row inmate. Reporter Pete Krouse analyzes a plan by judges in Cuyahoga County to create a special docket for domestic violence cases. Seth discusses a new revelation from the 2016 presidential election involving a sleight of hand by former Ohio Gov. John Kasich. Courtney updates a couple of stories involving unusual developments with tech contracts with the Cuyahoga County government, one that abruptly ended and one that has overrun its budget considerably. Reporter Mary Kilpatrick lays out how Ohio State University is one of the many organizations trying to distance itself from financier Jeffrey Epstein following his new charges of sexually abusing underage girls. A bunch of elected Republicans took the unusual step of criticizing President Donald Trump this week about what many see as racist Tweets, and Seth offers thoughts on what is driving Trump’s fellow party members to take a stand against him. A former NFL player and high school football coach was sentenced to six years in prison this week for sexually abusing a student, and reporter Cory Shaffer describes the odd sentencing hearing that ensued before the coach was taken away. Reporter Adam Ferrise updates the case of a former Cleveland police officer who was fired for failing to disclose crimes he committed in Norway. The update is about his membership in the Hells Angels Motorcycle gang. Anyone heading to University Circle from Interstate 90 will want to hear reporter Bob Higgs’ details about the construction planned for the highway intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulvard, which eventually will make the commute easier. Mary talks about the heat wave and what you can do to save a few dollars on air conditioning bills. Do you fantasize about reinventing your career? On this episode of Find Your Dream Job, we find out what it takes to completely change your career path, and why so many people want to give up on corporate life and open a bed and breakfast. Guest expert Kathy Caprino shares a roadmap for finding the right direction for your career. Kathy takes a holistic approach to career change, encouraging people to understand themselves and their motivations, and to be patient. She shared 5 steps to a successful career change: Step back. Refocus on yourself, look at who you’ve been over the course of your life. Let go of thinking patterns and behaviors that keep you stuck. These cause you to self-sabotage. Say yes to your compelling vision. If there’s something you’ve always dreamed of doing, decide to take it seriously. Try it on. Try out your dream, talk to people who have done it, and get past the fantasy. Create it smart. This process takes time. Don’t rush. Have a plan, then hold yourself accountable. Our Guest for This Episode: Kathy Caprino Kathy Caprino is a career and personal success coach, writer, speaker and leadership developer dedicated to the advancement of women worldwide. She is the author of Breakdown, Breakthrough, and the founder of Ellia Communications, Inc. and the Amazing Career Project.  Kathy is also a contributor to Forbes, Huffington Post and LinkedIn. Ben’s Job Search Resource: Career Interest Survey Everyone has a different way to describe themselves and what they like to do. It only takes about 10 minutes to complete because all you’re doing is checking off boxes for traits that relate to you. This process can help you get clear on the right career - or type of job - that works best for you. Find Your Dream Job Listener Question: Job Hunting in a New City This week’s listener question is a relatable one for folks looking to relocate. Becky and the team address this question from Seth Richardson, of New York City: “Hi, this is Seth from New York City. I am in the process of relocating to Portland.
