How Pressure Corrupts Well-Meaning Leaders with Sabina Nawaz

In this episode of Transform Your Workplace, host Brandon Laws sits down with global executive coach and author Sabina Nawaz to discuss the unseen pressures of leadership and how they can unknowingly change the way we lead. Drawing from her own experience as a former Microsoft executive, Nawaz shares how relentless pressure—not power—can corrupt even the most well-intentioned leaders. Through practical strategies, she offers a path forward for leaders to stay connected, self-aware, and intentional in their management approach. Don't let pressure derail your leadership—tune in now to learn how to lead with clarity, connection, and confidence.   TAKEAWAYS Leadership pressure can quietly push managers toward efficiency over empathy, distancing them from their teams. Strengths in previous roles, like efficiency or attention to detail, can be misinterpreted negatively in leadership. Employees often avoid giving honest feedback to leaders, leading to blind spots and poor decisions. When leaders voice their opinions first, others may hesitate to challenge them, creating blind consensus. Small habits, like putting away your phone in meetings, can improve leadership presence and connection. Leaders are always being watched—small actions and reactions can significantly impact team morale. Leadership is about creating an environment where others succeed, not doing all the work yourself.   A QUICK GLIMPSE INTO OUR PODCAST

Micah continues his message of judgment and not only has he singled out the politicians but now he turns his judgment on the the spiritual leaders, the prophets. These prophets were giving messages only for what they could get from the people. God has some strong words for these corrupt people and this corrupt nation.

Micah is primarily giving judgement to the the northern kingdom of Israel. Although he will give some messages of judgement to the Southern kingdom as well later in his message, he primarily right now is pronouncing judgment on Samaria and their judgment would soon come to pass in 722 B.C when the Assyrian Empire would come in and destroy Samaria and take captive the people. The Southern kingdom would last a little bit longer and ultimately be destroyed and the people taken captive and led off by the Babylonian empire in 586 B.C. Why does this happen? Because they rejected the Lord and His ways. They worshiped false idols and allowed sin to rule their lives.

Scripture Reading: 1 Kings 12:12-20 At the end of his life Solomon became idolatrous, having been influenced by his many foreign wives.  God was angry with him and the penalty was that Solomon's son, Rehoboam, would not be able to rule over all of Israel. The nation would, in fact, be divided into two kingdoms.  Rehoboam would be given only one tribe of the 12 Jewish tribes, namely the tribe of Judah.  The tribe of Benjamin would eventually join Judah in the formation of a southern Jewish kingdom.  The summary of Rehoboam's life is as follows:  "When the rule of Rehoboam was established and he was strong, he abandoned the law of the Lord, and all Israel with him.  . . .  And he did evil, for he did not set his heart to seek the LORD" (2 Chr 12:1,14).  Though Rehoboam's heart did not seek God, there were times when Rehoboam obeyed God (1 Kgs 12:21-24) and times when he humbled himself before God (2 Chr 12:6,12).  Rehoboam's life was characterized by a fundamental rejection of God, while appealing to God in times of need.  It is a common response of an unbelieving heart, but Christians still have the same tendency.  How easy it is to be passionate about God when we suffer, but careless and half-hearted when we feel strong.  May God help us to pursue Him bothin times of pleasure and pain.

NOTE: Record 5/29; Released 8/2/24; subject matters deal with history as well as current events that are still unraveling before us now; also Producer's Credits on this episode were recorded in July so if you are a new $10 or above tier subscriber on Patreon you'll hear your producer's credit on the next episode. On this edition of Parallax Views, Paul R. Pillar, a 28-year veteran of the CIA and a non-resident fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, returns to discuss his incredibly interesting book, Beyond the Water's Edge: How Partisanship Corrupts U.S. Foreign Policy. You're probably thinking that's an incredibly academic title that indicates a rather dry survey of how Republicans and Democrats have handled U.S. foreign policy over the years in ways that were more driven by ideological concerns rather than National Security interests. But while Pillar's book is a scholarly examination of those issues, one should not mistake the book for being a boring look at these matters. Which is to say that Pillar exposes all kinds of skullduggery related to how political partisans, especially on the Republican side of the spectrum but also encompassing the Democratic Party as well, when it's come to U.S. foreign policy over the years. Case in point: there's an entire section on the October Surprise. For those unfamiliar the October Surprise was an alleged plot by the Ronald Reagan campaign to pay of the Iranians to not release the hostages of the Iran hostage crisis until after the election in order to sabotage Jimmy Carter's reelection chances. Paul and I will cover that as well as skullduggery related to Richard Nixon and the Vietnam war. And by the end of the conversation, we'll delve into the ideological underpinning of the neoconservatives that made up the George W. Bush administration and pushed America into the Iraq War. Additionally, we'll discuss Donald Trump, Russiagate, George HW Bush's showdown with AIPAC on Israel, how Wilson and FDR dealt with WWI and WWII, Israel/Palestine, and a number of other issues. I won't give away all the subjects we cover because this is one you really just need to listen to.

According to today's guest, Dr. John Abramson, Americans are getting less bang for their buck when it comes to ever more pricey pharmaceutical drugs. Despite enormous expenditures—17.7% of our GDP—Americans are less healthy and life expectancy lags behind other developed nations. Dr. Abramson, formerly a family practice physician, turned his attention to critiquing the pharmaceutical industry when he realized over-the-top marketing of drugs was at odds with his patients' interests. He wrote Overdosing America, and became an expert witness in a landmark class action lawsuit over the now-withdrawn drug Bextra. His new book, "Sickening: How Big Pharma Broke American Health Care—And How We Can Repair It," exposes the sleight-of-hand involved in studies that gain approval for new drugs, and how the profit motive distorts optimal drug and device development. Dr. Abramson cites the example of statins as drugs that, while helpful for some, have been vastly overhyped and overprescribed on scant evidence. He takes aim at physician education—both in medical school and post-graduate—as indoctrinating doctors to prescribe drugs with questionable efficacy and undisclosed harms. Dr. Abramson offers an insider's critique of the medical provisions of the recently passed Inflation Reduction Act—which in fact does little to cap Americans' skyrocketing outlays for prescription drugs.

Plato, if he were around, would strongly assert that the music we listen to, the television shows we watch, the movies we hold close to our hearts ought to catechize us in the true, good, and beautiful of God's creation. We ought to train our affections to love not simply that which excites us, moves us, captivates us, but that which moves us to goodness, righteousness, virtue. We ought to be able to glorify God when we sit down to watch a movie or fire up our Spotify playlist. It's a high and lofty standard, but it's a biblical one. Also, we ought to pick more fights with Swifites and do so with much vigor and resolution, lest our daughters fall into the snare of having affection for a woman whose music and lifestyle contradict the word of God at every possible turn. Inevitably, we become like those we spend the majority of our time with, and that includes what we read, watch, and take in as entertainment. Within days after Tony Virgilio's murder, police established a theory and a motive: Calvin and Rosalio hired someone to kill Tony. And they did it for money. With Tony dead, they had a chance to collect on what today would be a 1 million dollar insurance payout. Suspiciously, that theory benefits certain parties, from the prosecution to the insurance company. When Ideology Corrupts Medicine—and How One Reporter Exposed It

Last month, Britain's National Health Service made major news when they announced that they were banning the use of puberty blockers for children, except for those enrolled in a tightly regulated clinical trial. The decision was made after an independent review found there were “significant uncertainties” surrounding the long-term effects of these drugs, which had previously been touted as totally reversible. The announcement followed another major decision that the NHS made last year on the same subject, which was to close Britain and Wales' only treatment center for children with gender dysphoria: the Tavistock Gender and Identity Service. The NHS found that the care provided at Tavistock, which has operated for nearly 35 years, was “not safe or viable as a long-term option for the care of young people with gender related distress.” These decisions bring the UK in sync with countries like Sweden and Norway—which have also made similar policy decisions when it comes to gender care for children. But all of those countries seem light-years away from how the United States approaches these issues.  My guest today, Hannah Barnes, has reported on this topic for years. Indeed, her reporting was the catalyst for many of these new changes. She's here to explain what happened in the UK, and why the U.S. is so out of step with one of our strongest allies. Hannah is an award-winning investigations producer at Newsnight, one of the BBC's flagship news programs. Her new book, Time To Think, follows the story from Tavistock's inception to its imminent closure. It investigates how a clinic can open its doors to thousands of young patients at their most vulnerable, how it can operate for more than three decades without oversight or regulation, and how—in the words of some of the clinic's own staff—this “medical scandal” unfolded.  Learn more about your ad choices. It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Alex Pareene, Contributing Editor at the New Republic and proprietor of the AP newsletter on Substack, to round up the week in news. First, Emma dives into updates on the US job growth, the White House's debt limit concessions, Clarence Thomas' corruption, the continuing banking crisis, Dianne Feinstein's absence, fascist legislation in Florida and Indiana, and Donald Trump's rape case, also diving into the recent revelations about the Federalist Society's backdoor funding of Ginni Thomas. Alex Pareene then joins as he and Emma dive into Clarence Thomas' endless stream of corruption allegations, whether anything will actually be done about it, and how liberal institutions affirm the Court's corruption. They also touch on the disappearance of Dianne Feinstein, the holdup it has created in the judicial confirmation process, and what (if anything) Democrats will do about it, before parsing through Biden's role in the matter, where his 2024 candidacy stands, and his likely matchup with Trump. After tackling the impotence of the “Republican in Blue clothing” tactic of Manchin and Sinema, they wrap up the interview with the devastating story of the killing of Jordan Neely, and the horrors of uplifting right-wing violence fantasies. And in the Fun Half: Emma parses through Steven Crowder's 2015 Op-Ed, “I'm a Guy and I'll Never Badmouth my WIfe,” Caleb from Canton discusses the absurdity of the billionaire genre of Nazi obsession, and Matt dives into the greatness of Chris James. Devon from Alberta asks Emma about the Oilers, the MR Crew parses through Lance from the Serfs' killer appearance on Tim Pool's show, and Michael Knowles and Matt Lech bond over their pro-Hooter stances, plus, your calls and IMs!
