What's up, dudes? I've got the amazing Thom Crowe from ‘Tis the Podcast with me to talk about the holiday classic “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” Shown throughout the ‘80s, the special was a staple during December, and has remained so.In 1988, it was released on VHS, and according to the cover box:“Dr. Seuss is back with his tongue-twisting verse and lighthearted music to delight children of every age. What holiday would be complete without this timeless tale of the mean-spirited Grinch and his feeble attempt to steal the Yuletide celebration of Whoville? The crotchety Grinch with ‘termites in his smile' and ‘garlic in his soul' tries once again to wipe out Christmas for the cheerful Whos, only to discover the true spirit of the holiday season lies beyond his covetous grasp.Narrated by the great Boris Karloff and featuring such musical favorites as ‘You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch' and ‘Trim Up the Tree,' Dr. Seuss' ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas' will warm the most miserly heart. Don't miss this animated confection—it's a perfect festival of fun for the entire family!”Bingle balls? Check. Who flop fluff? Yep. Bizzle binks and wungs? Not sure what they are, but they're here too! At the time self-publishing was (unkindly) referred to as “vanity publishing”. As if it was not valid. That myth lingers today. In 2018 I published my first book. The issue was that writing a book is a huge undertaking. In fact, it's too big to be a goal. It's a dream. Part of the enormity of the problem was that it was completely new territory. I had no guidance. I had to “go-it-alone”. Each step was painful. The fourth book I published, “Influence: Creation of Credibility” was to capture my process and make it available to other entrepreneurs. Patrick Page is a Grammy award-winning actor and playwright currently playing Hades in "Hadestown". He looks back on his early years growing up in Oregon and becoming a professional magician wherein he toured an illusion show and won awards. He shares how doing magic gave him the validation he needed and taught him about audiences and how to hold the stage. Patrick eventually got deeply interested in acting as a craft and pursued it as a career. While he decided to go for a Liberal Arts degree, he also spent his college years performing in plays. He shares his audition story for The Utah Shakespeare Festival despite being unqualified. Patrick shares how because he didn't go to acting school, he sort of learned by failing. He also talks about the first time someone told him his way of work was out of line and why he considers that a good thing. Apart from acting and writing, Patrick also has an acting studio in New York where he teaches. He talks about the importance of time management and knowing what you can do and offer, his hearing loss and the struggles that came along with it, including having to rely on muscle memory, and pursuing acting not because it's how you wish to be perceived but because it is who you are. Patrick Page is an actor and playwright known for his role in "In the Heights", "Flesh and Bone", and "The Good Wife". His other TV and film credits include "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit", "The Blacklist", "Evil", "Chicago P.D.", "Elementary", and "Spirited". He originated the roles of Norman Osborn and Green Goblin in "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark", The Grinch in Dr. Seuss' "How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical", and Hades in "Hadestown". Patrick's Broadway credits also include "Saint Joan", "Spring Awakening", "Beauty and the Beast", and "Lion King". His long list of stage credits also includes "Cymbeline" (New York Shakespeare Festival), "Richard II" (The Public Theatre), "The Sound of Music" (Carnegie Hall), "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (The Papermill Playhouse), and "Rex" (York Theatre). He's an Affiliated Artist with The Shakespeare Theater Company in DC and The Old Globe in San Diego, has taught acting in numerous programs and classes and is the founder of The Patrick Page Acting Studio where he also teaches. Apart from acting, Patrick is also a playwright. One of his plays, "Swansong", was nominated for Best New Play by The American Theatre Critics' Association and received many regional productions. In his early years, Patrick did magic and was honored by The International Brotherhood of Magicians as the “Best International Teen Illusionist” at their yearly convention in 1979. Patrick is also the recipient of The Grammy Award, The Tony Award nomination, the Helen Hayes Award, The William Shakespeare Award for Classical Theater, and The Emery Battis Award among others. December 13, 2018: A reader writes in responding to Jacob's Christmas movie rant and Jacob responds: Steve B writes in in response to our Christmas movie argument: “Most films are not just one genre. '21 Jump Street' is a comedy, but also an action movie. Shaun Of The Dead is a comedy but also a horror movie.  In that vein, I say Die Hard is an Action film, a Heist film, and also a Christmas movie. The whole reason John McClane is in Los Angeles in the first place is to see his family for Christmas. Argyle is playing 'Christmas' music in the limo. They debate cutting power to a portion of the city because it is Christmas. The thieves did not pick that day at random. Christmas is a plot point to the film.  It COULD have been written for John to have come to L.A. to see his family for Holly's birthday, or for his kid's school recital, but then it loses something for the plot. Could 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles' work as a Christmas movie instead of Thanksgiving? Yes, but it would lose something that Thanksgiving gives to that movie. If the genre (including a holiday) has a plot point to the film, and taking it away lessens the film, then I THINK it's reasonable to count it as part of the film's description.  For these reasons, I think that Die Hard is a Christmas movie. If others feel it isn't, I'm cool with that, as long as they are OK with me thinking that it is.” New Segment: Jacob decides what is and isn't a Christmas movie: /Film Daily listener Cade wrote in asking if Batman Returns is a Christmas movie The Sound of Music Lethal Weapon Casablanca The Night Before Home Alone 2: Lost In New York Eyes Wide Shut Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Serendipity You've Got Mail Trading Places Catch Me If You Can Go Rocky IV Life of Brian Love Actually All the other stuff you need to know: You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today's show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes. /Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and television as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com.
